Overall Comments
You have taken some of the feedback of the last assignment on board and you have
improved your work for this assignment.
You have set out with a solid plan and a goal in site and overall captured the structure and
the essence of the market very well. I would have chosen several images that you have on
the contact sheet for the final submission and there are also some technical issues that I
will both address in more detail in the feedback.
Overall the images are very good and the booklet is also well produced so it could
promote the market eectively.
However in terms of your research and theoretical reading, you have not demonstrated
any improvement since the last assignment. It is very important that you demonstrate
engagement with the theoretical side of photography and document your thoughts on
your research when you submit your work for formal assessment.
Assessment potential
I understand your aim is to go for the Photography/Creative Arts* Degree and that you
plan to submit your work for assessment at the end of this course. From the work you
have shown in this assignment, providing you commit yourself to the course, I believe
you have the potential to succeed at assessment. In order to meet all the assessment
criteria, there are certain areas you will need to focus on, which I will outline in my
feedback.
Feedback on assignment
1. The image is a good opening image for the set although the perspective is slightly
distorted. The use of a tripod with a spirit level would have significantly improved the
image since the structure seems to be leaning back due to the camera being pointed
slightly upwards.
Also the image has a blue tint and therefore the colours appear to be cold as opposed to
the warm tones that most of the other images have. If you print out this image for the final
submission you should add a bit of yellow in the colour balance in photoshop. Apart from
that the image is good.
2. This image is very good although it could be slightly more centered. I would generally
approach this type of scene by centering the architectural structure (creating symmetry) or
by un-centering it completely. When the composition is only slightly o centered it seems
a bit unbalanced.
As I already mentioned for the previous feedback, the red colour like the coat of the lady is
a bit problematic since it stands out and directs the viewer directly to it. This distracts from
the rest of the photograph and creates a misbalance so I would recommend avoiding it in
this context. Especially in the image 2 it is distracting since the blue and the green tones in
this image work so well together but are completely dominated by the red detail.
3. This image is very well composed. The other two images with the arch are just as good
as this one.
4/5/6. These images are all good, well shot and edited.
7/8/9. The same applied for this set of images although on the second image, the
foreground is out of focus. You mentioned that you used the 1.4 aperture for several
images and I would be careful with that because the depth of field is very shallow and
especially when you print out the images, they will appear very blurry.
10. Just like the first image, this image appears to be cold (blue tint).
11. This image is very well composed.
There are several images on your contact sheet that I would have included in the final
selection:
-
The two close-up images with the bread and the cheeses.
All three images of the arches are very good although it makes sense to choose
just one of them.
The image with the man on the bench with the almost see through black and
white image on the panel behind him.
The image with the crowd in front on the Monmouth coeeshop.
Suggested reading/viewing
I would recommend you to continue your online research as well as visit some exhibitions.
The OCA blog always keeps you updated on the recent shows and publications.
