The Bitcoin Space

People, companies, community, Satoshi Nakamoto

The Bitcoin and Greater Cryptocurrency Space

In this section we will introduce you to some notable people and companies that
are involved with cryptocurrencies, as well as some ways that members of this
community communicate with each other.
Relevant people may have contributed code, ideas, time and effort, or none of
these. Some people are known to be reclusive with great ideas while some more
vocal members have contributed little of actual value. As ideas diverge the
communities grow and can split.
Since more of Cryptocurrency development is open source these people live all
around the world and often have to communicate via the internet.

Satoshi Nakamoto
Perhaps the most interesting person in Cryptos, the mysterious creator of Bitcoin,
the blockchain, and cryptocurrencies in general.
What do we know about him? What do we think we know?
The P2P foundation profile of him states he was in 2009 a 37 year old male who
lived in Japan. By monitoring what date the age changed on his profile a birthday
of April 5th 1975 was found.
On April 5th 1933 FDR signed an order outlawing US citizens from holding gold,
on January 6th 1975 sales of gold in the US were made legal again.

What can we Learn From What he Left Behind?

His usage of English and lack of coding comments in Japanese lead many to
believe he is not really Japanese.
He claimed he had been working on bitcoin since 2007. The original software he
released ran only on Windows.
Many professional software developers have voiced their opinion on SNs original
source code. The opinion is the code doesnt seem to have been written by a
professional developer. It may appear 'elegant' in some places but is inelegant in
others.
It has been suggested that SN was full of theoretical knowledge but he was not
well versed with programming.

Contributions to the Community

SN contributed to the network for around a year. His last public post was on
December 12th 2010 just a day after posting, ... WikiLeaks has kicked the
hornet's nest, and the swarm is headed towards us.
SN was the first bitcoin miner and performed the majority of mining until the
network began growing. He developed and published new code, communicating
through forums and email with others including developers, cypherpunks, and
those that had recently found the project and had questions. This communication,
much like his mining power, appears to have waned over time.
Virtually all of these correspondence have been saved and are available online.

Disappearance
SN slowed and eventually stopped altogether his communication. About half way
into 2010 he gave Gavin the alert code and the keys to the code repository of
bitcoin itself.
Come April of 2011, when asked of his dwindling activity, Satoshi told early Bitcoin
user Martti Malmi, Ive moved on to other things and probably wont be around in
the future.
Many have speculated on what he was talking about, and there have been many
attempts to find out who he really is but so far nothing is proven. To that point
proving that one really is SN would be a difficult task, even for Satoshi themself.

Satoshis Fortune
Analysis of early blocks have found a number of blocks that have never been
moved and appear to come from the same computing system, this pattern is
present in the very first few blocks. The pattern shows block 12 was likely the first
block mined by different computer than SNs original one. Of the coins mined with
this pattern only 100 have been moved.
This sets a lower bound of 980,000 btc mined by Satoshi.
At the all time high exchange rate of $1100/btc this fortune amounted to over 1
Billion USD.

Tracing Satoshis Identity

SN first announced themselves and their plans on a cryptography mailing list. We
can assume they were interested in privacy and that they may have taken efforts
to mislead anyone who attempted to dox them.
There are a number of collected writing that can be analysed for writing style.
Code itself has a personal style that is different for every programmer or
developer.
Perhaps the most probable direction is the work itself. We can look at previous
and similar work to see who was interested in such ideas.

The Name Itself

The name Satoshi Nakamoto could be a portmanteau of words with meaning in
Japanese, or of the names of contributors to the ideas or technology behind btc.
The name can be loosely translated to mean things like thinking clearly inside the
foundation, the instrument of the common man, or from the ashes of centralisation.
Satoshi is a common name in Japan, and the name of fictional characters as well. It
can be translated to mean clear thinking, wise, clever, logic, village, and
philosopher.
Nakamoto is another popular name in western depictions of Japan. It can be created
by mixing the names of cryptographers Nakanishi & Okamoto. It can be translated to
mean things like central origin, in the middle, or basis

Known People
There are a number of people who we know worked with projects that could be
related to Bitcoin either technological, ideologically, or theoretically. We only have
time to cover a brief amount of information and there is much more, perhaps you
may uncover a clue.

Nick Szabo
Nick Szabo who proposed bit-gold which shares similarities to Bitcoin.
Szabo is a reclusive graduate of computer science the University of Washington.
He is also known to be at least versed in: finance, cryptography, and computer
science. He is credited with inventing the term smart contracts.
There have been accusations that he changed dates on some of his articles to
make it seem like the ideas werent published until after Bitcoin came out.
In April 2008 he asked for help coding an implementation of bit-gold and then went
totally silent about said research.

Szabo Continued
Writing style similarities have been found between him and SN, and multiple
independent researchers have fingered him as the secret identity of SN. Once
when a twitter user wondered if he were Satoshi Szabo replied, Not Satoshi, but
thank you.
After Bitcoin came out Szabo change the publication date of a bit-gold piece from
December 29, 2005 to December 27, 2008 which makes it seem like it came out
after the Btc whitepaper.
Previous coworkers have remarked on his knowledge of the Btc protocol and
suggested he might be a co-creator as he lacked extensive C++ knowledge, which
is the programming language v0.1 was written in.

John Nash
Nash was a Nobel Prize winner in Economics, a mathematician who worked with
game theory and more.
Nash is famous for his concept of 'ideal money' which is not backed by a
government and can easily cross international borders. The idea for a modern
alternative to central banking is similar in many respects to Bitcoin.
A declassified letter from 1955 shows Nash advising the NSA of cryptographic
techniques and ideas in computer design that wouldn't become mainstream for 20
years. He taught at Princeton and MIT.
He became schizophrenic but recovered on his own and resumed his teaching
position circa 2000. The movie 'A Beautiful Mind' is loosely based on him.

Nash Continued
He is known to have become fascinated by computers and as early as 1986 used
early email to send discussion on advanced concepts to other mathematicians.
He died in a car crash with his wife on May 24th 2015.

Michael Clear
The New Yorker named Michael Clear, a graduate student in cryptography who
lived in Dublin. He later worked for Allied Irish Banks to improve its
currency-trading software. He also co-authored an academic paper on
peer-to-peer technology.
"I'm not Satoshi [Nakamoto, the likely pseudonymous author of the paper], but
even if I was I wouldn't tell you," Clear said.
He also says to everyone to stop emailing him.

Neal King, Vladimir Oksman and Charles Bry

An investigation by 'Fast Company' which was prompted by the New Yorker piece
found circumstantial evidence that suggested a link between an encryption patent
application filed on 15 August 2008, by Neal King, Vladimir Oksman and Charles
Bry. Only 3 days later the bitcoin.org domain name was registered, anonymusly of
course.
The patent application contained networking and encryption technologies similar
to Bitcoin's. A textual analysis found the phrase "computationally impractical to
reverse" was found in both the patent application and the bitcoin whitepaper.
However all three of these people have denied being SN.

Shinichi Mochizuki
Theodor Ted Nelson, the man credited with coining the term hypertext,
suggested SN is a man named Shinichi Mochizuki. A Japanese mathematician
who solved one of the math worlds most complex problems, the famed ABC
Conjecture.
He posted the proof online and 'walked away' not answering any questions. He is
not known to have coding skills but it is possible he is self taught and others
simply dont know about it.
Nelson doesnt have any direct evidence for his claim but you can view a video of
his explanation online.

Jed McCaleb
He had the largest file-sharing website of its time around 2000, co-founded and
later sold Mt.Gox which then changed significantly.
Co-founded OpenCoin which changed its name to Ripple Labs. McCaleb left
Ripple Labs in summer 2013 and in the process sold nearly all his XRP, nearly 9%
of all XPR.
He now works with Pantera Capital which invests in bitcoin companies.

Martti Malmi
Malmi says he discovered Btc in 2009 and helped SN with development.
He says he made the first fiat exchange, 5,000btc for $5 via paypal.
Claims to have sold all his coins in 2011 and after found his dream job.
He was the one making the first commits to the Sourceforge repository in August
2009.
He was removed from the list of project developers on bitcoin.org in June 2011 at
a similar time when SN stopped contributing.

Donal O'Mahony who is a professor in computer science at Trinity College in

Dublin and Michael Peirce authored a paper on digital payments.
Michael Weber is associated with the website used to register bitcoin.org by SN.
Wei Dai creator of b-money. Dai says that SN contacted him to look over a
pre-release of the whitepaper because Adam Back noticed similarities between
the subject. Dai is the first citation on the whitepaper and SN hinted the code was
written before the white paper; so was Dai really a citation at all?

Craig Wright and Dave Kleiman

In December 2015 an Australian man name Craig Wright had a number of stories
run on him and the potential that he and a man named Dave Kleiman had
invented Bitcoin as a team. The source for these stories was an allegedly leaked
or stolen batch of emails.
The authenticity of the emails is disputed however and its very possible Wright
leaked the emails himself.
In a later post by Wright in May 2016 it was alleged that Wright was Satoshi with
no mention Kleiman.
Wright has been accused of created the story as a mean to evade the tax
authorities in Australia.

Dave Kleiman
Former police officer and forensic investigator. Kleiman was wheelchair bound
since a motorcycle accident in 1995. He continued working on the police force for
a little while as a computer forensics investigator.
He is known to have regularly typed out 30+ character passphrases.
Kleiman was active on the Metazoid cryptography list since 2004. And had been
using computers since at least the DOS times.
Kleiman and Craig Wright had worked together for years. If the leaked documents
regarding Wrights first outting are to be believed then Wright entrusted Kleiman
with 1.1 million btc in 2011.

Dave Kleiman
Kleiman is known to have carried on his person a USB drive encased in aircraft
grade aluminum. This drive may have been given to his coadopted brother Ira.
He had been hospitalized in late 2010 and self released himself in 2013.
Kleiman died a few weeks later from complications due to a MRSA infection.
Broke and destitute, his body was found next to a loaded gun. A bullet hole was
found in his mattress but no shell casing was located.
His father made a post in 2014 asking for links for Daves contributions to
developing Bitcoin.

Dorian Nakamoto
In February 2014, Newsweek ran a front page story outing a Japanese man
named Dorian S Nakamoto as the secret identity of Satoshi.
Dorian disputed this and many communities over
the intern wrote in angry letters to Newsweek for
not doing proper research.
The former engineer with defense contract who said
he couldnt talk about certain matters announced
plans to sue Newsweek.

Hal Finney
Cypherpunk Hal Finney was one of it not the first person to use Bitcoin, and the
recipient of the first tx, 10btc from SN as a test.
In 1993 Finney wrote: With digital cash and smart cards, you should be able to
engage in...transactions with no organization or institution able to violate your
privacy or steal your money. You can protect yourself, rather than having to trust
others. This puts more power into the hands of the consumer.
Those close to Hal and those that interacted online or in interviews with him tend
to think he is not Satoshi.

Finney Continued
He had been a proponent of Transhumanism or the use of technology to augment
and enhance senses and life.
He had studied at Caltech and worked in Silicon Valley on cryptography, he also
was a proponent of personal liberty and privacy.
In August of 2009 Hal was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and
paralyzed by March of 2013. The ALS ice bucket challenge went viral in 2014 in
the month leading to Hal's death in August.
Hal wanted to be cryopreserved after he could no longer use his limbs and as
such his head is kept in Arizona awaiting future research.

Gavin Andresen
Gavin has drawn suspicion due to his early involvement and the fact that SN gave
him the keys to Bitcoin itself.
A princeton graduate who previously worked in Silicon Valley Andresen found btc
in 2010 and quickly became engrossed.
He has been a vocal advocate for implementing a scaling solution and has
contributed code to the XT and Classic in addition to the Core client.
In May 2016 Gavins commit access was temporarily removed to due concerns of
hacking after he posted a blog stating he thought Wright was Satoshi. It was never
reinstated by the remaining Core client devs.

The NSA or Other Government Entity

A group of people working for a company or cause could be creators of the
original Bitcoin code; though developer Greg Maxwell has stated he thinks the
code looks like it was written by one person.
The NSA released the How to make a mint paper in 1996 showing they could
have been working on similar ideas. An entity that wants security might want the
roughly 1 million btc SN appears to have.
News of such ownership could have dramatic consequences on the exchange
rate.

Will the Real Satoshi Please Stand Up?

Many have wondered if SN would ever come back to offer advice while others
think this would be a bad idea.
Being able to sign a message with the secret key associated with one of the very
early addresses or even the Genesis Block would contribute but alone is not proof.
SN published a PGP key but that by itself. Without someone who knew him to
back up that it really was his key isnt definitive of anything other than having
access to that PGP key. Plus this key is not known to have ever been used.
Moving some of SNs coins could cause a panic in the community as well.

Commit Access
For the Core client implementation there are a select number of maintainers who
can actually allow changes to the GitHub code.
Final say of code that has gone through the peer review process is had by the
limited number of people with commit access to the code repository.
When Satoshi left Gavin Andresen was left to control the Bitcoin code.
Gavin gave up his power as chief developer on the Bitcoin software to Wladimir J.
van der Laan on April 7th 2014.
Maxwell, Garzik, Wuille, and Van der Laan are the only developers left with this
ability.

Gregory Maxwell
Gregory Maxwell is a former bitcoin skeptic but has long advocated for secure and
open-source cryptography.
He was an early user of wikipedia, though he seems to have had a number of
disagreements with community members there. He previously worked with the
Mozilla Foundation.
He says he looked at Bitcoin circa 2008 and didnt think it could work but years
later he saw it was still around and gave it more attention.
He is now a co-founder of Blockstream, the company aiming to bring sidechains to
Bitcoin.

Jeff Garzik
Jeff Garzik had been a Linux kernel developer at Red Hat, worked at BitPay, and
the blockchain solution company Bloq
He at one point had this to say about bitcoin's future, Bitcoin is just the beginning
of a brand new category of algorithms. Bitcoin itself may fail, but it is the first of a
new category of crypto-currencies based on the proof-of-work algorithm method.
Not to be confused with well known scammer named Josh Garza.

Pieter Wuille
Pieter Wuille is one of the top 5 developers by number of code commits. He is a
PhD and has previously worked at Google.
It is said he liked computers since a young age and even began writing his first
programs when he was only 11.
He discovered bitcoin 2010 and got offered a position on the development crew
after doing some volunteer work and making suggested improvements. He was
the driving force behind the new code library libsecp256k1.
He is also a co-author of the sidechain paper at Blockstream.

Wladimir Van Der Laan

Wladimir J. van der Laan first got involved with the Bitcoin project by
re-implementing, and vastly improving, the Bitcoin Core user interface.
Surprised to receive the keys from Andresen, Wladimir lives in the Netherlands
and is the current lead developer and maintainer of Bitcoin Core as of April 2014.
He works a lot on the front end or user interface but weighs in on many ideas.
In April 2015 he joined the MIT Digital Currency Initiative where he will be working
full time on Bitcoin Core.
