Chapter 19.
Revival
There can not be a good man who has no enemies.
MajorGeneral Sir Percy Hobart
Almost immediately after the decision Hartmann again to enter military service in the German Air Force began
arguing about his new status. This little dispute had big consequences. He was typical of the confusion that
accompanied the new career Erich and his promotion. The nature of these difficulties stemmed directly from the
source and the basic philosophy of the new German armed forces, so it is appropriate to consider them briefly.
In the Federal Republic of Germany, the legacy of the Nazi period affected the organization of the new armed forces.
The German people were quite indifferent to the Bundeswehr, as he swallowed by warlords for years of Nazism. The
organizers of the new armed forces had to work hard to ensure the supremacy of civilian authority over the military,
as it was in England and America. Psychology of the Germans was completely different than in those countries, and its
new armed forces now sought to play a role in politics, unlike in the past emphasized apolitical. The old system of
military caste, took the oath of allegiance to the head of state, has been added completely new features.
The officers stayed away from the election campaigns by the traditions and ordinances, but now they join political
parties. [265]
Reorganization of the armed forces and to establish civilian control over affected the officer corps. Appointment,
production and success depended on the officers now politicians in the same way as on merit.
The German air force were severely affected by the fact that policy is having too much influence on this branch of the
armed forces. These errors were too well known to officers on active duty, which is without poison point them
naproshennym aliens. In the years in which the new Air Force officer corps was severely damaged by political
cronyism. The officer, who had strong ties in the highest political circles, in the early years could make any mistakes.
At the same time honored people, under various pretexts, are suspended from work. These measures were absolutely
necessary to provide career pets, as these careers were built not on merit officers.
From the beginning of his second military service Erich Hartmann kept aloof from political nominees. Expected of him,
that he joined the party of the Christian Democrats after the return to military service. It seems that this was a tacit
condition of appointment to the post of commander Erich first squadron of fighter jets, although this is not mentioned.
In a straightforward manner, he explained that he would not engage in any political party. They will never be
confused with the politicians in the past, and that the policy has cost him 10 years of life. In a sense, this statement
was reckless.
Management personnel invited him to return to the service with the rank of captain, "because he served in the rank of
Major at least 2 months old when the war ended." 10 years in prison when Major Hartmann sample demonstrated good
behavior officer, officials seemed a matter of secondary importance. Officers, such as Gunther Rall, who learned
about the proposed him as a captain, were horrified. Politicians have explained that it was impossible to demand from
the world's best ace, a diamond in the sole holder of the new armed forces enlistment down in rank.
Friends of Erich won this little skirmish, though at the time he did not know about it. Hartmann's idea to lower the
rank was not too strange, if we try to understand the reasons for this in the backroom. The main person in the

management of the new Air Force personnel were exmajor Luftwaffe. He served in aviation intelligence on the
Eastern Front and knew Hartmann. Perhaps too well known to treat it with indifference.
In January, 1943 Erich provide fighter cover this officer during the flight to Batumi to verify the presence there of the
Black Sea Fleet. Soon after they had crossed the front line, the Russian antiaircraft opened fire. Spy plane pilot
immediately turned his plane back to base. Fighters have completed the task and visited Batumi. They found the
Russian ships in the harbor, but the story did not end this report. Soon after that came the military prosecutor to find
out reasons for nonmajor job. He was removed and sent to Germany. In 50 years of Major again surfaced and is now
in charge of titles, proceeding and appointing the new German Air Force.
Erich entered the service with the rank of major. However, this was only the first attempt to poison his life. Servility
and slander are a natural extension of cowardice and incompetence. People indicated by these qualities rarely come
into open combat with those who fear and hate. However, the barriers that were erected in the way Eric, this does not
become weaker. Often, he became the victim of his own heightened reaction to the machinations of small asshole.
Before returning to the office, Erich found in Dsseldorf his former chief engineer of Heinz "Bimmelya" Mertens.
Bimmel almost dropped the phone when he heard the familiar voice of Erich like come from the past. They did not
speak to each other for almost 11 years, although at the front were inseparable as twins. The last time they met,
when the burned out remains of JG52 aircraft at the airfield Deutsche Wade in May 1945. Erich for all the world there
is only one chief engineer of the ground crew, and he wanted to Bimmel again served with him. But Erich decided for
himself that he would not destroy life Bimmelyu if he did well in the civilian world.
Erich found quite successful burgher. Bimmel had a good job in the city water and two children. For such a well
ordered human return to military service would be folly. Erich so even touched in a conversation with Bimmelem this
question. Blond Knight realized that he would have to accept a different technique. A week later, and the whole of
Germany Bimmel read the headlines:
Hartmann RETURNS Luftwaffe.
2 days before the appearance of these titles Erich passed all the required commission. Doctors confirmed that he is
fully recovered after suffering [267] transferred in custody. 8week language courses under the guidance of the
Americans gave him a basic knowledge of English. After that, he was ordered to go to Landsberg for training by
American instructors.
In May 1955 the German armed forces began to increase rapidly, after the October 1954 Germany accepted an
invitation to join NATO. The North Atlantic Treaty Organization was created in 1948, after the Berlin blockade, which
highlighted the need for joint West defensive measures. Germany has become the central and most important part of
the defense system. Flight training began on several new German Air Force bases in Germany. Used by British and
American aircraft and instructors. Simultaneously, several hundred German officers with the U.S. Air Force was trained
in jet aircraft based near Phoenix, Arizona.
In the first months after the return of Eric flew a double "PayPerKaba", owned by his friend to get a new license for
light aircraft. 11 years have passed since the day that the last time he was sitting in the cockpit. So he cautiously
approached the small car. However, as soon as Eric opened the door a tiny cabin and looked inside, he felt a strange
feeling that flew it yesterday. Small "Piper" was the size of a campaign to "Storch", where Erich often flew during the
war. Feeling machine immediately returned. When Eric took off, I found that and not lost his skill. Triumphant roar of
the engine sounded to him like the voice of a friend, risen from the dead. After that Eric just glad received in late
1956 in order to appear Landsberg for retraining.
The phenomenon of the lost years which struck him particularly acute during the flight to "Piper Cabet" amazed and
American instructors at Landsberg. When Erich Hartmann arrived at the air base, the Americans could hardly believe
their eyes. The best fighter pilot looked at 25 years, but spent 11 years in Soviet camps and performed more than
1,400 sorties.
Under the leadership of Captain James friendly Manguma Erich quickly mastered the T6 and T33. Port American T6
training aircraft with a zvezdooobraznym engine and twobladed propeller. It was used as an airplane flight. The
plane was a big step forward in comparison with the "Piper", but still remained far behind the Me109, which flew
hundreds of hours of Erich. Lockheed T33 was a double [268] jet training aircraft. However, the Jets were not a
novelty for Eric, as in 1945, he flew the Me262.
Joyous feeling of flying on a fast plane was one of the signs of liberation. He felt that he was born again. But this joy
was not the only one in his life. In the summer of 1956 Ush pregnant. Eric, who had completely focused on military
affairs, I realized that the world was again filled with joyful anticipation for him. The death of a young son, whom he
had not seen since he was in prison, was for him a heavy blow. And the emergence of a new baby is the beginning of a
new life.
When February 23, 1957 in Tbingen near Weil Ush bore pretty blonde daughter, parents joy knew no bounds. Ursula
Isabel soon became "Hush Little" and helped his parents to forget past sorrows for joy today. The day when Eric was
able to feel like a father, was one of the happiest days of his life.
In 1957, Eric took a course on fighter jets at RAF near Phoenix, Arizona. Farewell to Houches and daughter has been

difficult, but my new friends at the base in Arizona Luke helped Erich feel at home. He flew the T33 and F84,
practicing shooting, bombing and flying. The weather was perfect, which made it possible to fly almost every day.
His association with the Americans got stronger as the base Luke from England arrived Colonel Raymond Constable,
one of the authors of this book. He was invited to a gathering of former pilots 20 Tactical Fighter Wing. Blond Knight
was elected an honorary member of 20 Wing, when this part of lodge based in KVVS Uezerfilde, Essex, England.
American pilots in Luke was better ace as brothers. This whirlpool of communication does not allow him to even think
at the irony of the situation he stands shoulder to shoulder with former enemies, and in distant Europe, he even
knocked down 7 of their aircraft.
When shown the film at the air base fotopulemetov captured during the fighting, Erich gladly have young American
pilots that the footage only confirms what he talked about his battle tactics. "Pull together, if you want to shoot it
down often repeated it. 250 yards? It's too far away. " Some young drivers are skeptical grin, but documentary
footage showed that Eric was right.
When pursued aircraft fills the screen, and the stalker opened fire explosion occurred goal every time the distance
between the [269] aircraft have a minimum. If shots were fired at a long distance, leaving the camera shows an arc
toward the bullet and some random hits. Very rarely seen a downed plane. The only exceptions were flammable
Japanese cars, which broke even with one hit. Film showed that no attack from long range does not provide such
effective results as shooting at close range.
Young American pilots admired modesty and openness Erich Hartmann. He attracted them like a magnet. They
willingly took over the his vast experience, which was the result of more than 800 air battles. In turn, the U.S. Air
Force made on blond Knight impressed his high spirit, which reminded him of the old Luftwaffe. German Air Force in
1957 did not have a sample of this inner strength, and her absence Erich felt particularly strongly.
Free from political atmosphere Wehrmacht model 1957, Erich found the atmosphere in the U.S. Air Force is simply
gorgeous and inspires people to do the impossible.
During his visit to the U.S., and Erich got personal friends. Mayor Frank Buzz and his wife invited him Weill live in their
house in Phoenix. Eric could hardly believe that the line officer can live as good as Buzz. They had a beautiful house
with all the comforts, nimble sports car and were generally cheerful, happy people.
Life in Arizona Erich seemed just a fairy tale, especially after the terrible decade in Soviet camps. He wanted to share
this with Houches. Buzz willingly invited a German couple to live with them for as long as Eric will be retrained in
Luke. And soon Ush flew to Arizona, leaving the baby in the care of her grandmother in the house Petch in Stuttgart.
Arizona became an unforgettable experience for Houches. Wide, endless expanses of fields and deserts were quite
unlike the German landscape. Travel to the Grand Canyon with overnight camping admired them as much as luxury
stores in Phoenix. When they returned back to Germany, this idyll ended. Ush but later recalled with a sigh:
"It was the most beautiful time in our lives. We made no one chided that we Germans. Everyone was friendly and
willing to help us. We felt right at home. This is the only country other than Germany, where I wanted to live. Frank
and Weill Buzz most [270] the best people I have ever met. These are great friends, which is experiencing the same
affection, as his father and mother. Sometimes after returning to Germany, I missed the Phoenix, Vail and all that
there is left. "
But Erich adventures in America were not only interesting and pleasant. He learned a lot and from a professional point
of view. Of course, of particular interest is the F104 {29} , because I believe most modern aircraft. Hartmann visited
Nellis AFB in Las Vegas, Nevada, which was based training squadron of F104. American pilots admired this car, its
speed, climb and armaments. When we were at the base. But when Eric spoke with the same young pilots in a bar, he
opened a completely different picture.
He asked why the percentage is so low sound machine, and the Americans told him about the difficulties with the F
104. Problems with engine problems with the nose wheel, the problem with the nozzles were the main reasons, the
findings of machine failure. When Eric spoke to the staff, technology that practical problems and repair aircraft
preflight. Catalog problems with spare parts, equipment breakdowns, service problems were not the accomplishment
of which the proud.
Eric was sent to the United States not to assess the F104. However, he became deeply interested in the issue as a
professional military pilot and future commander of the squadron, as he knew that NATO is preparing to take the
aircraft into service. The young captain of U.S. Air Force lent tremendous Erich is a list of accidents that happened to
the F104 until then. Erich has carefully studied this description and come to the firm conclusion that no longer
redefined. German Air Force to use such a plane, you need a lot more experience and technical knowhow than they
had at the time. This view is later brought him a lot of damage, as was absolutely correct and accurate.
When he returned to Germany, he received an offer to take command of a squadron of fighterbombers. He rejected
it, [271] as it does not consider himself suitable for this type of aircraft. He said the command that would prefer to
wait for the post of commander of the first squadron of fighter jets. In the spring of 1958, he for a time served as
deputy chief of fighter school in Oldenburg {30} . And in June, received its historic designation.
The first squadron of fighter jets new Air Force was formed in Alhorne. It is called the JG71 "Richthofen". This

squadron was to keep the tradition of the best ace of World War I, and JG2 "Richthofen" from the Luftwaffe during
the Second World War. It is quite natural that this squadron as commander got better ace of World War II Major Erich
Hartmann. With solemn speech Kammhubera General, Inspector of German Air Force, organizational gathering began
Hartmann biggest adventure, as an Air Force officer.
This decision showed that the German Air Force can make good decisions, not just errors. The decision to give the post
commander Erich JG71 was marked by the seal of genius. In this way managed to shine together the challenge and
the person best suited to its other solutions. Germany noted the merits of Erich Hartmann, appointing him commander
"Richthofen Squadron." But at the same time, it was a challenge blond Knight, as the problem of formation of the
squadron, armed first modern jet fighter German Air Force F86, was extremely difficult. It seemed that someone set
out to check, and Erich Hartmann is something more than just an ace and a sniper.
But in the spirit of competition Erich leaped, and he lashed out with all the energy to work. Young pilots of the
squadron dedicated entirely trust their commander. Erich drew their faith in the fighting spirit and energy by creating
a new standard for the German Air Force. Only during the Second World War, under the leadership of such
commanders as Galland, Molders, Hrabak, Trautloft, Priller, fighter squadron had a moral attitude.
Erich spent in class, constantly flew F86 and became the most prominent figure in the glider club Alhorna on
weekends. He taught the young drivers' Richthofen Squadron, "as his mother taught him. And besides, he gave them
their own experience.
He found Sigi Count von der Schulenburg, a fellow camp in Degtyarka in officers' school in Hamburg and got his
transfer to JG71 [272] duty officer. Erich specially flown in a small Dornier to consult with officers of NATO and
knock some equipment for his squadron. Everything worked like the devil, because he feels the approach of something
especially significant.
Erich formed a new squadron, and tirelessly repeated that requires years of experience, years of experience, more
years of experience. He knew that soon will go into service F104 and understand that then it will be difficult. The
most important thing for him was to purchase as quickly as possible the maximum flying experience. Various minor
details of his studies he left for later. Eric knew that the lives of young pilots will depend on whether they will be able
to cope with the supercomplex F104.
To control the F104 required special people, and he focused all his attention on them. Endless training should be
supplemented with confidence and high spirit. He painted his plane JG71 in the same way as was painted "Black
Tulip" Karajan1, terrify Russian. During a routine prophylaxis were similar to tulips and other aircraft JG71. Pilots
like a reminder of the past. But a visiting general was shocked. He was not a pilot, but he served in antiaircraft units.
"These aircraft are painted?" Asked the general.
"Yes, Herr General," said Hoyt.
"But why is painted only part of the plane? Wings look naked. "
"We painted them while prevention so that it does not restrict your movement. When the inspection is complete, we
paint them in full. "
"The paint is worth the money, Major Hartmann."
"That's right, Herr General. Personally, I'll pay for the paint. But these icons to help raise the morale of the squadron
pilots. "
As Krupinski in Russia during the Second World War, Erich gave bar pilots JG71. After the flight, the pilot had a rest in
the bar at the base. There they could relax and talk. However, the new German Air Force Command does not. On
orders from above, Erich had to close the bar. However, in today's Air Force, each squadron has its own bar.
Such incidents with senior officers led to rumors that "Hartmann is not too good officer." Most senior officers and
officials did not make any combat mission. In a sense, Erich, probably, was not "a good officer." However, this is
dependent on the point of view of the critic. After Erich saw [273] German officers without pants in Russian captivity,
he realized that the usual criteria for a good officer, very controversial.
One of the old comrades in JG52 was transferred to a "Richthofen Squadron" into submission Erich. He was not a man
with whom Erich converged close. However, they both were in the Russian camp, fought together at the front, and
Eric knew that this officer was seriously wounded in the battle of the head. This wound is sometimes made him do
not, as it should.
This officer sometimes gossip heads of minor offenses Erich charters in Alhorne, breaking loyalty to their commander.
Eric treated him much better as an old wartime comrade, forgiving minor offenses. When the officer got drunk and
climbed to fight ordinary, Erich did not punish him. The general, who found out about this indulgence, demanded to
punish Erich veteran.
The blond man who 10 years resisted grinder NKVD, was physically unable to do the same as someone who lived in an
atmosphere of freedom. He could not violate their ethical principles. Punish officers with military awards, war hero, is
itself difficult. And punish a person who needs a doctor, not a guardhouse was for Erich Hartmann unthinkable. He
refused to obey the advice of the chief. And it was also an indication that "Hartmann is not a good officer."
Critics Erich Hartmann in many ways were very far removed from real life. The German Air Force, as well as many

other military organizations, professed outdated views on what is right and effective. In the nuclear era military
leaders still held the difference between peace and war. Effective for them often means a perfect system, ironed
trousers, saluting, and the like nonsense, meaningless, and even dangerous to the supersonic era.
As a squadron commander Erich full use of their wealth of experience. He commanded the JG71 as if there was a
war. "In order for people not born bad habits." He saw little point in building the ideal aircraft for the line with the
crew in full uniform with them. But reminiscent of roosters strutting inspector was on it and pay attention. And for
Eric was chief operational readiness.
Erich Hartmann believed that future wars will not allow time for "mobilization". He therefore considered the need for
constant readiness and dispersal. The German Air Force, more than any other had [276] reason to act that way. When
in June 1941 the Luftwaffe destroyed the red air force on the ground, it was the most devastating destruction of the
air force in the history of {31} . Russian planes were lined up on the ground near the border as a parade. Eric believed
that the German Air Force must now repeat this mistake, as jets and missiles can cause even more rapid and
devastating blow.
His refusal to be limited to halfmeasures with respect to alert led to clashes with his immediate superiors. Not with
experts in their field like Kammhubera and with illiterate political nominees, who are now led by the Air Force. Many
of them during the war served in the infantry, some have served in the Luftwaffe, but almost no one flew in 1945. And
it for sure that they all professed antiquated views on the conduct of war.
Hartmann's character took shape in the fire of the Soviet camps, was to forge his suffering and hardened by processes
which had no idea little people, people say that Hartmann was a good officer. When the NKVD spent 10 years trying to
destroy the young man who represents the best features of the German character, they turned their efforts only Erich
Hartmann in the person who blindly defend their honor. 10 years, he clung to the truth in the darkness of countless
bunkers. And now, in an atmosphere of political freedom, no one would be able to wrest from him the political "yes",
while true military said "no."
The senior officers, who lived in an environment of political lies, of course, shied away from the stubborn blonde. He
was not able to wag internally to adapt to changes in the political environment. This was due to 10 years of hard
resistance. And these politicians have used that speculated on his nervous behavior. It is a tradition to say that Erich
Hartmann was a good officer.
The officer, who knew him in the glory days m sitting with him in Russian prisons, explains Erich approach to
incompetent superiors generals, colonels and the like personas:
"He did not understand tact. He talked to them as if they were officers of the NKVD, whose mental abilities were
izgazheny politicians ". [277] But the young pilots Squadron "Richthofen" perceived it opposite than officers move
pieces on the board. He was the best ace ever sadivshimsya the plane. When he told them about Soviet psychology and
methods of moral destruction used NKVD, they listened and remembered. These young Germans knew that there may
come a day when they have to defend themselves against these methods. And they knew that they hear the real truth.
After only six months after Erich began work on forming units, JG71 "Richthofen" in October 1958 was transferred to
the NATO forces. The significance of this achievement can only be appreciated if you remember the normal term,
which required a fighter unit to achieve the required level of performance. Usually, it took at least a year. For the
commander, who "was a good officer," this was an outstanding achievement which remains unsurpassed, and 10 years
later.
These boys looked at him as a father. In September 1960, he proudly wrote the author of the guys:
"In the last year we have made during aerial gunnery average hit the squadron of 24%. I'm proud of it. I think this is
the highest figure in the German Air Force. My guys are just superb! I have 6 snipers, in which the average hit ratio is
60. This young boy, who is only on for 24 years. I created a link leaders. These guys are now better than old and tired
squadron commander. "
People, who in those days were in the JG71, adored his commander. They retained this admiration today. They would
follow him even in hell. Many of them are ahead of Eric in advancing through the ranks and are now the generals.
The decision to purchase the German Air Force F104 broke the career of Eric, but in fact the opposite should happen.
His interaction with senior commanders who were intelligent and knowledgeable professionals remained great. He
loved and admired by General Kammhuberom, the first inspector Bundeslyuftvaffe, respected his abilities and
achievements. The same can be said of his relationship with General Steinhoff, a general rally, which also led the Air
Force. These people could be telling the truth.
Once, during a conversation with a question about Kammhuberom F104. Erich based his views on the F104 on the
personal experience acquired during their stay in the U.S.. Eric said he did not believe that the F104 can be a good
aircraft for the German Air Force in general. Maybe he [280] was the first definite opinions, and reported his
command. He believed that we should postpone buying F104.
"I believe that I am a good pilot. Average pilot not having exceptional ability, but with some luck, and nothing more.
You have to be lucky, regardless of your experience as, say, a businessman. Due to its success, I gained a lot of
experience. This experience, together with the fact that I learned about the F104 in the U.S., tells me that our young

drivers just do not have enough experience to deal with such a complex weapon system.
I do not think the F104 airplane bad. The problem is that the human factor in our country will be a source of serious
difficulties. "
Erich openly expressed this opinion to General Kammhuberu. He noted that in the development of German air up there
is a failure in 10 years, during which there were trained pilots and technicians, there was no structure. He stated his
opinion Kammhuberu viewing F104 in the United States, free from political influence. He emphasized the youth and
inexperience of German pilots and lack of management experience jets have command of the German Air Force.
"I believe that the purchase of F104 at the moment is a mistake. We do not have to buy a plane that can not be used.
"
General Kammuhuber who loved Eric, listened attentively.
"Sometimes I think that's why the Germans hate other people. We say, "We are Germans, and therefore get through
this." Because we Germans, we can even use such a complex aircraft like this, now. "
Kammhuber said that in his opinion should be taken.
"You have to buy the Americans their fighters F100 and F102. This new generation of jet aircraft, which we will get
experience with postcombustion systems, and other technical innovations. And then we can go to the F104 based on
knowledge and experience. But we do not have to buy the plane, which simply can not cope. "
Kammhuber said nothing in response to objections by Erich. His soft evasive answer was clearly advice.
"Erich, never talked about it, said the general. We are happy to buy the aircraft. Politicians have decided to buy it.
"
If Erich hear the friendly and intelligent officer, who did much for the German Air Force, he would have retained his
world. Unfortunately for him, the people who asked him direct questions, get them straight answers. With the F104
should not be rushed. Gossip and whisper, [281] leaked in political circles, there existed strengthened the view that
Eric is not a good officer.
Catastrophic experience that the German Air Force received in a collision with a F104, which cost a tragic and costly
way to confirm the correctness of the conclusion of Erich Hartmann. Disaster with F104 continued until in 1966 the
Air Force command was not transferred to Johannes Steinhof. Steinhof flew the Me262 during World War II and set
out his concerns to the political leadership of West Germany. In spite of the brilliant military achievements, not just
showcase the talents commander and organizer, he met the growing political resistance. Perhaps it was the result of
the terrible burns on the face, which Steinhof got in an accident in 1945.
The real cause of resistance was that Steinhof was a general, knowing the business. Common sense and logic always
guided his actions, when he got his first major post a place representative of Germany in the NATO Council in
Washington. He made a lasting impression on all who met him. His burnt face not constrain its dynamic personality.
When political circumstances forced him to do the autumn of 1966 the Air Force inspector {32} , it is his work and his
willingness to take responsibility to help overcome the crisis "Starfighter".
Steinhof had a serious reform program F104 {33} . He organized extensive training and enhanced flying practice. This
is how the function and Erich Hartmann, creating JG71. You can give another example of clairvoyance blond Knight.
Of the first 16 pilots, which he taught for the squadron "Richthofen" alive today 15. Died only test pilot F104. His car
overturned on takeoff strong gust of wind, so the accident happened regardless of what the pilot and the problem has
been solved. The rest are not only alive today and have from 800 to 1,000 flight hours in the F104.
Erich between alerts regarding F104 and the confirmation of his cruel truth that he was the target of dirty tricks
generalishki, [282] which is best left unnamed. He was not an officer, who flew during the war. Military pilots flying
in Germany have licenses that are resumed if the person is in order. This procedure reduces to the usual paperwork
and putting them together with the license to confirm the latter.
During the days filled with hard work in Althorne when created squadron "Richthofen" Erich missed the deadline of the
annual renewal of the flight license. Later, he could not find the document. General found the chink in the armor of
blond Knight to stick there and put a poisoned blade, he thought, a fatal gift. Silliest investigation began with the aim
to give Erich trial. His prospects looked pretty vague, but suddenly schemer were rebuffed.
Proceedings of the difficulties Erich reached America. General Panitski, who succeeded in the post of General
Inspector Kammhubera German Air Force, was at the time in Washington. Retired American fighter pilot asked the
general pointblank whether Bundeslyuft Waffenseriously decided to prosecute Erich, who 10 years fought for
Germany in Soviet prisons. Bewildered Panitski managed only to squeeze stock phrases that "Erich good pilot, but not a
good officer." Soon after, a military tribunal considered the accusation, and Erich was fully justified. However, the
damage had been done. Too many people have heard the first part of the story, but do not know how it ended. He was
relieved of command of JG71 "Richthofen" and transferred to staff work in a portion of Van, near Cologne.
Integrity and honesty set Erich outside political escalator that bore the top rung less capable, but more diplomatic
people. For several years he lived in relative obscurity as a specialist in the development of tactical schemes and
watched as the people he taught while serving in the JG71 obtained the rank of colonel before him. He was pleased
to have seen the success of "their guys." Among his allies were a few senior officers, who admired him, but their

efforts to achieve the rank of Colonel Hartmann regularly disrupted. He received the title until mid1969. By this time
he was 8 years went to the rank of lieutenant colonel, and denial of conferring the title of the officer who had the
highest awards in the German armed forces, already looked silly.
While Eric was a little disappointed, he still has not lost a sense of humor and a philosophical view of things, believing
that everything in life runs fate. He kept on politicians with disgust [283] looked upon as a necessary evil. However, in
his work, he was able to fully develop analytical skills and intuition, developing tactical instructions.
All who knew him, unanimously agreed that the German Air Force just do not know what to do with this outstanding
pilot, how to turn it to their advantage worldwide fame as the use preserved by the old soldier seething energy.
Uncompromising individualist, he continued to live according to his own notions of fairness, justice and honor. He was
a hero with weaknesses. However, they can be understood, and they were simply a continuation of his merits as a
person.
Knight blond hair began to darken, and the weight of past years and started to affect him. His face is like combat
shield ancient knights, Emblazoned. All the fights, which he kept in the course of life, the victories and defeats,
triumphs and tragedies, were printed here. During his knightly battles in the tournament of his life he came out the
winner more often than losing. But he knew what it was to be knocked out of the saddle. Sometimes dishonest even
tried to crush the enemy lying on the ground blond Knight.
They lived in love and harmony with his wife, always warms the soul of man. The story of his life and love
intertwined. Courage and patience turned them into a beautiful legend. He has not changed to meet the coming of a
new world, and now oldfashioned in his attitude to life. Wiser than before, he looks at the approach of dusk, as the
gauntlet. The most difficult fights lie ahead, maybe this test will be able to wake up his old fighting spirit, courage
and will. Let Heaven help him in this fight. [284]

Epilogue
Shortly after the first publication of this book, Colonel Erich Hartmann resigned and returned to his old village house.
His friends Dieter Hrabak, Walter Krupinski and Gunther Rall, all who had the rank of general, persuaded Erich soften
its position on the military. They asked him to show some tact and stay in the Luftwaffe, where he was promoted to
General.
All other fans Erich also tried to influence him. However, a firm bias Erich remained unshaken. He relied on the tried
and tested formula in action: "I saw decided attacked." The decision was made, and Erich refused to change it. He
assumed his duty as an officer to give superiors correct advice, honestly expounding their views on any issue. However,
once they make the decisions, they should perform. Erich was not physically able to become a yesmen, as was
expected of him fascinated by political intrigue Bundeslyuftvaffe guide. He decided to go with the honor of the
unequal battle and asked for his resignation. Now he Erich Hartmann, a retired colonel.
Erich luxuriously immersed in normal civilian life. First, he rebuilt his beloved home, where he was a project, and he
performed all the work. He helped create several flight schools and build of a job. Erich worked as a representative of
an association of former fighter pilots in Wrttemberg. He willingly participates in races light aircraft, once he even
flew with Adolphe Thailand.
Hartman's family survived many school friends, with whom they have good relations. Eric attends the annual festivals
JG71 "Richthofen" and other meetings fighter pilots. One day he flew to St. Louis, Missouri, where he was the guest of
honor, along with ace KVVS Peter Townsend. [285]
Erich and Ush spent hundreds of hours at work, preparing an illustrated biography, which was published in 1978 by
publishing house "MotorbuhVerlag" in Stuttgart. This work and home repairs done and Erich Ush even closer than they
were before. Eric once told the author: "I am nothing without Hush." He knew what he said. His whole life was spent

under this motto. She became the center of his universe.

A sudden change in the fate of Hartmann in 1980 many of his friends have the jitters. He stopped attending rallies and
festivals. He stopped flying. He left his post in the association. The remaining fighter pilots realized they had lost
their leader. Only those who went to his house to meet with Erich. He told the authors that all he needed more in life,
is close to his home.
The sudden and mysterious change Hartmann led many to think that the great ace forgot old friendships. It is not.
Erich quite deliberately concealed some circumstances. He knew that the news of his illness may cause a violent
reaction among friends. However, you should know the truth if only to refute the malicious fabrications. With the
permission of the authors Erich tell the truth about this episode in his life.
In 1980 he fell ill with a heavy cold and pneumonia. It is the disease killed his father at the age of 58. Erich was very
worried. With his weak heart, he could easily follow his father. "I spent four weeks in bed, and then another 2 weeks
to recover. But I'm right! "
His brother Alfred advised him to avoid all kinds of stress. He warned that a second attack of the disease can lead to
heart attack. Erich diligently fulfilled doctor's prescription, and managed to win the most difficult fight of his life. By
October 1983, he recovered so that once again passed a medical examination and was allowed to fly. Erich reopened
at training schools and then became a representative of the association pilots veterans.
But Erich remains firm in the decision to stay away from motorways and highways, he refused to attend a meeting of
veterans and other holidays. Inside, it is still the same old tiger, and a meeting with old friends worry him too much.
Therefore Hartmann tries to avoid events that could be dangerous to his health. "I am retired, I am a civilian, I want
to rest easy. I exhibit shows. "
Today, he is forced to look after their health. In the days of fighting Erich strictly comply with its rules. With essential
Ush he would go as far as possible on the road of life. [286]

(Note: Hartmann was shot down in Soviet territory around 06.15 after his 90th victory). [298]
Here ends the first flight book by Erich Hartmann, who remained safely in Germany. His second book with information
on future activities, disappeared when arrested by the Americans. Data about other victories Hartmann taken from the
diary of JG52, or his letters to Ursula Petsch.

Notes
{1} The school Zerbst cadets flew the Me109E4. He had the engine DaimlerBenz DB601A power 1150 HP and a top
speed 357 miles / hour. Fighter was armed with 2 7.9 mm. machine guns and two 20 mm cannons in the wings.
{2} Mayor William Butz, who finished the war with 237 victories.

{3} Since the arrest prior to shipment to the Eastern Front, many officers of the Luftwaffe decided that he was sent
there as a punishment. Here we tell the real story of this episode.
{4} The term "old" of fighter pilots was quite relative. Hrabak was only 7.5 years older than Hartmann, but by the
standards of fighter aircraft, he was already "old man."
{6} Abbreviation III/JG52 meant III Group 52 fighter squadron. Each squadron usually consisted of three groups. 7
Squadron III of designated 7.III/JG52. The composition III/JG52 were 7, 8 and 9 Squadron.
{7} In the U.S. aircraft during the Second World War pilots were the only officers. Many other countries used as pilots
as NCOs.
{8} Poor Krupinski shot or not, but by the end of the war, he shot down 197 aircraft, having spent 1100 sorties.
{9} Lieutenant Korte spent most of August on vacation. August 29, he was awarded the Knight's Cross but disappeared
along with his link in the same day.
{10} A little strange expression Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross because the Knight's Cross it is not an independent
award, and only the degree of the Iron Cross. Therefore, the expression "to get the Knight's Cross" is a bit wrong, and
like the expression "to get first class." Although both still speak. AB
{11} The term is used by German pilots, skiers and other athletes for performance of hazardous work. Literally it
means "to break his bones," but actually means good luck. Approximate equivalent of the Russian "or break a leg."
{12} The pilot hit the highest number of aircraft of the Western allies 176.
{13} Hartmann, Rall and Krupinski confirmed that it was possible to cram two mechanics in the plane. This saved
valuable technical staff from taking Russian.
{14} However, Erich won Major GenzWolf Shnaufer, best night ace Germany. He ended the war with 121 night
victory.
{15} This paragraph I made no changes to show the level of knowledge about Russia by Western authors and publishers
of the reluctance to change anything in one typed. AB
{16} Molders, Galland, Gollob, Graf, Nowotny, Marseille (posthumously) and Hartmann.
{17} Hartmann did not know that it is essentially the same as stated Goering fighter aircraft commander, General
Galland. He argued that there should be a massive attack fighters in good weather. This tactic is a huge success, when
Galland received permission to use it.
{18} Lieutenant Baer was the best jet ace of World War II, with his 16 victories. He was the last commander of a
squadron of experts JV44, formed by Adolf Galland.
{19} As a general rule, the winning drivers of all countries not fired vyprygnuvshih parachute pilots.
{20} Sergeant Heinz "Bimmel" Mertens on the truck slipped through the orders of the advancing Americans, and then
continued his journey to the west. After 3 weeks, he reached his home in chaplains and thus escaped Soviet captivity.
{21} "Closing the Ring" W. Churchill, pp. 373 374, Boston, 1951.
{22} Author's note: The events described in this chapter are mentioned only in order to show their tremendous impact
on Erich Hartmann, who first witnessed the mass rape. This is done not to cause hatred of Russian. The authors fully
agree with Colonel Erich Hartmann, that man is good by nature, and all the Russian as well. Colonel Hartmann
strongly opposes attempts to incite hatred among people.
{23} Sighet / Maramures Romanian town on the border with Ukraine, 225 miles east of Budapest.
{24} We note, however, that these critics forget to refuse to obey the order of Count Zaydemanna fly to Dortmund and
surrender to the British. He made a courageous act, trying to help several thousands of German civilian refugees.
{25} The real reward Erich Hartmann v.Veyle stayed home, where he kept during the war and after it. She is now in
the same place. U.S. soldier captured cheap plastic copy. Erich took with him to Russia a second copy. Letting
Diamond NKVD was a symbolic act, since no copies have no value.
{26} The special session of the meeting, three. AB
{27} Hartmann was a natural linguist. He is very well spoken in English and reasonably knew French and Russian.
{28} And then someone accuses Dumas in creating a spreading cranberry tree. AB
{29} The Fighter F104 "Starfighter" had a speed of more than 2M and was designed to capture control of the air. It
was built by Lockheed. He was considered the best aircraft in the world and has been the dream of many pilots. There
were built more than 2550 vehicles for the Air Force in 14 countries.
{30} The commander was Colonel school Venelt Herbert, who had 36 victories.
{31} of the Israeli Air Force on Arab airfields during the Six Day War in 1967 looks paltry compared to the events of
June 22, 1941.
{32} The Air Force Inspector in Germany is actually the commander of the Air Force.
{33} Thousands of people have been addressing the issue F104, but it is a key element of leadership as the knowledge
of knowhow provides a breakthrough in production. In 1965, the loss of F104 per 100,000 flight hours were 41.9%. In
1967, the loss of F104 per 100,000 flight hours was 10.7%. This level of losses F104 was the lowest in the world.

you guys probably know this but his score has been hotly debated for several years, and it appears he did not score
anything close to 300 kills more like 180, of course this could be said of all JG 52 aces in my opinion let alone the
scores though smaller of the soviet aces as well............

From some of what I read herelooks like a lot of info was taken from: The Blonde Knight of Germany by: Raymond
Tolliver. That book is a great read in itself.
