itsresistancetoavarietyofcorrosiveconditionsledtoitswide
useinmarineapplicationsandothernonoxidizingchloride
solutions.Thisnickelalloyisparticularlyresistantto
hydrochloricandhydrofluoricacidswhentheyaredeaerated.
Aswouldbeexpectedfromitshighcoppercontent,alloy400is
rapidlyattackedbynitricacidandammoniasystems.
Monel400hasgreatmechanicalpropertiesatsubzerotemperatures,canbeusedintemperatures
upto1000F,anditsmeltingpointis23702460F.However,alloy400islowinstrengthinthe
annealedconditionso,avarietyoftempersmaybeusedtoincreasethestrength.

Alloy400isvirtuallyimmunetochlorideionstresscorrosioncrackingintypicalenvironments.
Generally,itscorrosionresistanceisverygoodinreducingenvironments,butpoorinoxidizing
conditions.Itisnotusefulinoxidizingacids,suchasnitricacidandnitrous.Nevertheless,itis
resistanttomostalkalis,salts,waters,foodproducts,organicsubstancesandatmospheric
conditionsatnormalandelevatedtemperatures.
Thisnickelalloyisattackedinsulfurbearinggasesaboveapproximately700Fandmoltensulfur
attacksthealloyattemperaturesoverapproximately500F.
Monel400offersaboutthesamecorrosionresistanceasnickelbutwithhighermaximumworking
pressuresandtemperaturesandatalowercostduetoitssuperiorabilitytobemachined.

Alloy400caneasilybeweldedbygastungstenarc,gasmetalarcor
shieldedmetalarcprocessesusingappropriatefillermetals.Thereisno
needforpostweldheattreatment,however,thoroughcleaningafter
weldingiscriticalforoptimumcorrosionresistance,otherwisethereisthe
riskofcontaminationandembrittlement.
Finishedfabricationscanbeproducedtoawiderangeofmechanical
propertieswhenpropercontroloftheamountofhotorcoldworkingandthe
selectionofappropriatethermaltreatmentsisdone.
Likemostothernickelalloys,Monel400istypicallytoughtomachineandwillworkharden.
However,excellentresultscaneobtainedifyoumakethecorrectchoicesfortoolingand
machining.
