LABOUR LEADERSHIP contenders

Jeremy Corbyn and Owen Smith
will go head-to-head next month
at a Jewish News debate.
More than 200 community members will get the chance to quiz the
candidates in one of the most fractious leadership contests in recent
memory.
The event, on the evening of 18
September, is organised by the Jewish Labour Movement, Labour
Friends of Israel and JW3 and
media partnered by Jewish News.
It comes in the wake
of widespread concern over
cases of anti-Semitism in
the party, which have
led to a wave of
suspensions
of members,
councillors and

one MP. Corbyn insists he takes a

zero-tolerance approach to anti-Semitic language but has been accused
by critics of not doing enough to live
up to his pledge. This issue will be
high on the agenda at the hustings
at JW3, along with topics such as
faith schools, religious rites and
the delegitimisation of Israel in
left-wing politics.
JLM chair Jeremy Newmark said:
This is an important opportunity for
the community to question the candidates and discuss their fears and
concerns. We urge Jewish Labour
members and supporters to attend.
Meanwhile, the two candidates
this week outlined their positions on
key issues in letters to the Board of
Deputies chief executive, Gillian
Merron.
Corbyn, who remains the front-runner, said he had been troubled by
recent events in Labour with regards
to anti-Semitism, and shocked by
some of the language used.
While community leaders have
said the credibility of the partys
inquiry into anti-Semitism by Shami

Kings student fined over assault

ONE OF the students who
stormed Kings College London earlier this to protest
against an Israeli speaker
has been found guilty of assault by beating and ordered to pay compensation
to the victim.
Politics graduate Ivana
Bevilaqua, 25, was told to
pay 100 to Esther Endfield,
who was trying to film the
protest against Ami Ayalon
when Bevilaqua knocked the
mobile device from her hand.
Ayalon, the former head of
Israels internal security
agency Shin Bet, had been
due to speak on the peace
process before a mob descended on the premises,
throwing chairs and banging
on walls, while shouting:
Free Free Palestine.
At Westminster Magistrates Court this week,
Bevilaqua was given a conditional discharge for 28 days
and ordered to pay costs and
compensation. She said: I

war criminal.
Ayalon was an elite soldier
who rose to become the
highly-decorated former commander-in-chief of the Israeli
Navy, but since retiring from
the military in 2000, he has
sought a career in politics, and
pursued several peace initiatives with Palestinian partners.
Responding to the courts
judgement this week, the
Jewish Leadership Council
said: We welcome the guilty
verdict against one of the violent anti-Israel protesters at
KCL earlier this year.

380k missing from Jewish charity

THE CHARITY Commission has
launched a inquiry into an Orthodox Jewish charity in Manchester amid significant
concerns about a 380,000
black hole in its accounts.
Chessed LYisroel, which
aims to relieve poverty, had already had property repossessed for failing to make
repayments on an earlier loan,
and has now failed to adequately explain why it has not
repaid a subsequent loan.
The Commission said the
charity, which first raised eyebrows for not reporting its finances for four years, has
since submitted a set of conflicting accounts which
prompts concerns about the
charitys financial affairs.
In 2011, Chessed LYisroel
failed to make repayments to
Yorkshire Bank, resulting in the

repossession of the charitys

properties and a loss of more
than 250,000.
That same year, during which
it listed wedding expenditure among its outgoings, the
charity took out another loan,
this time for more 130,000,
which has not been repaid.
Reports and accounts submitted to the commission
have raised significant regulatory concerns, the regulator
said in a statement. The charity
has failed to adequately explain why it did not make its repayment obligations or what it
did with the borrowed money.
The statutory inquiry will
look into the reliability and accuracy of the charitys financial
reporting, it said, and whether
the charity is still active.
Chessed LYisroel could not
be reached for comment.

GAZA CHARITY FUNDS HALTED

THE GOVERNMENT has
stopped taxpayers money
going to Christian charity
World Vision, whose Gazabased manager is accused of
funnelling cash to Hamas.
A statement from secretary
of state for international development Priti Patel confirmed
that the government will not
consider any future funding
until World Vision has completed its audit.
Conservative Friends of Israel (CFI) welcomed the call for
a rapid and thorough investigation into a scandal that has
rocked a huge global charity
working in some of the worlds
poorest areas.
In a letter to Jewish community leaders, Patel said she was
deeply concerned about Israeli allegations that Mohammad El-Halabi, manager of
operations in the Gaza Strip,
had been diverting millions of
dollars to Hamas for years.
Patel said her department
does not provide any current
funding to World Vision operations in Gaza, or in the Occupied Palestinian Territories

Mohammad El-Halabi [inset] raised funds for Hamas in the Gaza Strip

(OPTs) more widely, adding

that the charity had suspended
Gaza-based operations.
CFI honorary president Lord
(Stuart) Polak welcomed the

news, saying: We have been

campaigning for many years for
transparency and it is clear the
DFID (Department for International Development) are taking

this matter seriously.

El-Halabi was arrested last
month and accused of using
his position to divert funds to
benefit of Hamas.
A joint statement by the
Board of Deputies and the
Jewish Leadership Council
read: We strongly welcome
the assurances we have received from the Secretary of
State that DFID are not supporting World Vision in Gaza.
We are encouraged by how
seriously she is taking this matter and by her non-negotiable
commitment to Israels security.

Khan hit by anti-Semitic abuse after Corbyn criticism

SADIQ KHAN has been on
the receiving end of a barrage of abuse including
anti-Semitism after backing
Owen Smith to be Labours
next leader.
The London mayor was
highly critical of the current
leader and his role in the EU
referendum campaign in an
article for the Observer,
hours before ballot papers
were sent out in the two-way
leadership contest.
Soon after his article was
published, he received a number of messages suggesting
he had been influenced by
Jews. One asked, Who owns
you @sadiqkhan?, alongside
a picture of a kippah-wearing
mayor eating matzah during

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn and Londons Labour mayor Sadiq Khan

an event ahead of Pesach.

Another said Khan spends
his time writing articles to
help his masters in Tel Aviv,
while a further tweet at-

tacked the mayor as a Zionist together with an image

of Khan in front of a London
Jewish Forum banner.
Khan repeatedly con-

demned cases of anti-Semitism in the party during the

race for City Hall, saying he
wore a badge of shame
over the scourge and suggesting the Labour leadership could have taken a
tougher stance.
A spokesman for Corbyn
said: Jeremy has consistently spoken out against
anti-Semitism in all its forms
and condemned all abuse.
He has repeatedly called for
a kinder, gentler politics,
and recently launched Respect and Unity, a code of
conduct calling on all Labour
Party members and supporters to conduct themselves
with the highest standards of
behaviour.

Candidates set for Jewish News hustings

Continued from page 1
Chakrabarti is in tatters following her elevation to the House
of Lords, he insisted he is committed to implementing its 20
recommendations and consulting with the Board and
other Jewish groups in rolling
out anti-racism training.
He wrote: I established the
Chakrabarti Inquiry, the first
full inquiry into racism in any
political party in Britain, because I believe it is imperative
to acknowledge and address
these issues.
As you state in your response to the Chakrabarti report. There has too often
been an attitude that, We are
on the left, therefore we cannot be racist.

As I said in when I
launched my leadership campaign in July, the Labour Party
must focus on ensuring all its
members apply the anti-racist
standards we preach.
While Chakrabarti stopped
short of recommending lifetime bans, Smith insisted any
member or supporter found
responsible for anti-Semitism
should be kicked out of the
party for good no ifs and no
buts. That should apply to all
forms of racism, sexist abuse
and other forms of discrimination.
Saying he was worried
about the growth of antiSemitism in the party and
wider society, he added: I
support the implementation

of the recommendations of
the existing [Chakrabarti] report and also agree with your
suggestion that the party
should commission a credible
supplementary paper on this
issue. If elected leader I will
ensure this happens.
Both candidates backed the
Boards 10 commitments devised ahead of the last General
Election including defending
religious rites and affirming the
importance of faith schools.
One pledge is to promote
peace projects that unite communities and resist boycotts
that divide communities.
But Corbyn sought to clarify his position on that point,
saying: I am not in favour of
the academic or cultural boy-

cott of Israel, and I am not in

favour of a blanket boycott of
Israeli goods.
I do support targeted boycotts aimed at undermining
the existence of illegal settlements in the West Bank.
He added: The society we
all want to create will be fairer,
more tolerant and more secure.
We will fight prejudice and
discrimination in the workplace, in wider society and,
yes, within the Labour Party.
Every community and every
faith must be allowed to
thrive.
Tickets for this event, on
Sunday 18 September at 6pm,

Tory Friends in Israel

TORY POLITICIANS are meeting Israeli counterparts during the ninth Conservative
Friends of Israel delegation
since last years election.
Five MPs, several of whom
have not previously visited
the country, and three peers
are meeting MKs and British
ambassador David Quarrey
and seeing first-hand the borders with Syria and Lebanon.
The group will also visit
Save a Childs Heart, an Israeli
NGO providing heart surgery
for children from developing
countries including the Palestinian Territories, and, for the
first time, the Jerusalem College of Technology.

New jobs rule unfair

A NEW rule that makes it
more difficult for Palestinians
to sue their Israeli employers
for unlawful behaviour has
been denounced as unfair.
Unions and politicians have
asked Israels Supreme Court
to nullify the regulation,
which requires non-citizens to
make a financial deposit before lodging a claim money
they would lose if they cannot
prove illegality.
The Jewish Labor Committee opposes the rule as it says
it would affect mainly Palestinians living in the West Bank.

Celtic fans raise 110k after fine

Celtic face disciplinary action after fans waved Palestinian flags at a match against Hapoel Beer Sheva

CELTIC FANS have raised more

than 110,000 for Palestinian
charities in just two days, after
the club was charged by Uefa
over a flag display during a
match with an Israeli team.
The European governing
body last week launched disciplinary proceedings against the
Glasgow team after a number
of fans displayed Palestinian
flags during their 5-2 Champions League victory against Israels Hapoel Beer Sheva.
The Green Brigade group of
supporters launched an appeal
on the gofundme website to
match a possible UEFA fine.
They hit the 100,000 mark

on Tuesday, two days after the

fund was set up.
The fans are raising money
for Medical Aid Palestine,
which delivers health and medical care to those worst affected by conflict, occupation
and displacement.
Another beneficiary is the
Lajee Centre cultural and sports
project for children in Aida
refugee camp in Bethlehem.
A statement from the fans
explained the money would
help to buy football kit and
equipment to enable the
refugee camp to have a team,
which will be called Aida Celtic,
in the Bethlehem youth league.

Celtic face their ninth UEFA

punishment for supporter behaviour in five years when the
case is heard on 22 September.
Sanctions have included a
fine of more than 15,000 two
years ago after a Palestine flag
was displayed at a match
against KR Reykjavik.
The UEFA rule in question
forbids the use of gestures,
words, objects or any other
means to transmit any message that is not fit for a sports
event, particularly messages
that are of a political, ideological, religious, offensive or
provocative nature.

Galloways Respect Party deregisters

GEORGE GALLOWAY has said
Respect has deregistered as a
political party because we
support Corbyn's Labour
Party.
The move has prompted
speculation one of Britains
best-known anti-Israel figures
could try to rejoin Labour,
which expelled him in 2003
over his position on the war in
Iraq and Tony Blair.
Labour's rules bar members
from expressing support for
other parties.
Respect registered in 2004
and Galloway became its only
MP in 2012, before losing the

Bradford West seat to Naz

Shah last year.
During the Labour leadership campaign last year, Galloway said he would rejoin
the party pretty damn quick
if Corbyn became leader.
The Respect Party said it
voluntarily deregistered on
18 August.
However, a Labour source
said: Galloway, as someone
who has been formally expelled from the party and
who stood as a candidate
against us repeatedly and recently, would not be allowed
to be a member of the party.

Shomrim welcome for armed patrols

ORTHODOX COMMUNITY
volunteer service Shomrim
has welcomed the reassuring sight of armed police on
the streets of Stamford Hill.
Security volunteers at
Shomrims north-east London
branch have thanked the Met
for providing extra armed
units around the capital as
part of Operation Hercules,
saying this acts both as deterrence and reassurance.
The move, which also includes patrols in Hendon and
Golders Green, follows Police
Commissioner Sir Bernard
Hogan-Howes promise to deploy more visibly-armed officers on targeted patrols in

vehicles and on foot, after terrorist attacks in Europe.

The threat level in the UK
is severe, which means an attack is highly likely, he said.
A CST spokesman said: We
have worked very closely with
police to plan and enact
armed foot patrols in various
areas of London with large
Jewish communities.
It is not in response to any
specific threat, but is part of
the overall increase in visibly
armed patrols in London. This
is all made sadly necessary because of the overall general
situation, and our community
should expect to see more
such patrols in future.

SPECIAL REPORT

ISLAMIC STATE IN GAZA:

TERROR HAS COMPANY

Two years after the last Gaza war, Lisa Sanders

reports on a bitter new conflict erupting in the
territory between Hamas and Islamic State
THIS WEEK marks the two-year anniversary of the end of Operation
Protective Edge the 50-day war
fought in Gaza in 2014. During the
conflict, 66 Israeli soldiers and six
civilians were killed, while approximately 2,000 Gazans died, some 50
percent of them civilians though
the exact figures still remain mired
in controversy, with Palestinians
putting the civilian casualty rate
closer to 70 percent and Israelis
calculating it to be 36 percent.
Two years on, Gaza is still ruled by
Hamas, a terrorist organisation.
Hamas is supported by Iran, now that
the Iranians have apparently forgiven
Hamas for supporting the opposition
to President Assad in Syria. Israeli
public opinion is strongly divided
over whether the war achieved its objectives: destruction of all the terror
tunnels and prevention of rocket attacks into Israel.
Now, two years on, Hamas is not
the only terrorist organisation in
Gaza. There is also Islamic Jihad to
contend with and, most recently, a

branch of Islamic State is reported to

have gained a foothold in the Strip.
The Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip
borders Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, which
has become an Islamic State stronghold. In October 2015 the Sinai
branch of Islamic State, calling itself
Sinai Province, brought down a Russian jet, killing 224 people. Since then
the 23,000 square miles of Sinai
desert has seen Egyptian troops battling the Islamists, with heavy loss of
Egyptian lives. Tackling Islamic State
has become a top priority for Egypt,
as it struggles with economic chaos
and the fear of another coup.
In May, the IDFs Major General
Yoav Mordechai told a Saudi news
site that there is mutual cooperation
between Hamas and Islamic States
field commanders. According to
Mordechai, Islamic State operatives
have entered Gaza through tunnels
from Sinai to train militarily with
Hamas.
Conversely, there have been reports that Gazans are infiltrating Sinai
to join Islamic State. The general

added that Hamas has also been

providing medical treatment to IS
fighters in Gazas hospitals. An Israeli
report has claimed Hamas military
wing has been transferring tens of
thousands of dollars a month to the Islamic State groups Sinai branch.
In June, IS-Sinai leaders met with
Hamas officials in Gaza. Exactly one
month later, on 1 July, a Friday night,
a rocket fired from Gaza smashed
through an empty pre-school building
in the Israeli town of Sderot.
A jihadist organisation, Aknaf Beit
al-Makdis, which has as its mission
statement Jihad against Jews, enemy
of God, claimed affiliation with Islamic
State and announced it had fired the
rocket. In response, Israels Air Force
struck four targets in the Gaza Strip
that served as terrorist infrastructure
for Hamas.
In Gaza, the two Sunni Muslim terror groups Islamic State and Hamas
are locked in a power struggle, even
while they work together. The situation is complicated.
According to US think tank the

Main picture: Islamic State fighters on the march in a fortified town in Syria.

Carnegie Endowment, 10 percent of

Gazans believe the Islamic State represents true Islam. Gazas residents
are deeply unhappy; Gazas economy
is still a disaster. Hamas worries its
continued ceasefire with Israel could
generate a backlash from the Islamists. Meanwhile, the Sinais Islamic
State has set its sights on overthrowing Hamas in Gaza.
An Islamic State video entitled A
message to our folks in Jerusalem,
shows IS members originally from
Gaza declaring war on both Israel and
what they call the tyrants of Hamas:
You are nothing in our reckoning.
You, Fatah, and all the secularists, we
count you as nothing. Allah willing, we
shall uproot the state of the Jews. You
are nothing but froth that will be gone
as we move in. Allah willing, Gaza will
be governed by Shariah despite you.
Abu Qatadah al-Filistini, an IS member who leads a faction in Aleppo,
Syria, appears on the video calling on
monotheists in Gaza to join the convoy of the Mujahidin and to join the

State of the Caliphate. Hamas is reportedly trying to oust Islamic State

from its midst. The American news
site Breitbart has reported that Hamas
has foiled a large-scale IS attack on
Gaza government institutions, facilities and officials.
Hamas arrested and jailed 10 jihadi
activists from Southern Gaza who
claimed allegiance to Islamic State, as
well as arresting six jihadists who had
returned from fighting for Islamic
State in Sinai.
The Gaza border is calm at present,
yet Hamass cross-border tunnel network continues to dominate the headlines. Thirty-two such tunnels were
destroyed during the 2014 conflict,
and in recent months the IDF has used
innovative new technology to detect
and destroy additional tunnels. Israel
is also building a new subterranean
wall along the Gaza border, which
aims to block the tunnels.
And simmering just below the surface: an internal Gaza power struggle
which could blow up at any time.

Strictly kosher for dance show

STRICTLY COME Dancing will

Barrister Robert Rinder, the reality courtroom star of ITVs
Judge Rinder, model Daisy

Rinder, 38, said: The only

So, although I suspect the
latter will be far more difficult, I

Concern over French burkini policy

JEWISH COMMUNITY representatives in the UK
have reacted with
horror and dismay
to the hounding of
a Muslim woman
on a French beach
for wearing modest swimwear.
The show of
solidarity comes
after police armed with pepper spray and batons heavyhandedly enforced bans on
Muslim women wearing headscarves and the increasinglypopular burkini on beaches.
The swimwear, which has
been prohibited by the mayors
of Cannes, Villeneuve-Loubet
and the Corsican resort of
Sisco, leaves only the face,
hands and feet exposed.
However, reports emerged
this week of incidents across
the south of France, in which
armed officers waded on to
one beach and ordered a
mother to remove the banned

attire and issued

on-the-spot fines.
A spokesperson at the Board
of Deputies said:
We were very
concerned to see
the scenes during
which a Muslim
woman was confronted by police
about her modest style of dress.
Wherever there is not
some compelling reason
such as the infringement of
the rights of others, or some
demonstrable safety hazard
it is important that people of
different faiths be allowed to
manifest their beliefs through
their dress. The accommodation of and respect for difference is a key British value.
The mayors say they are upholding French laws on secularism, triggering a public
debate during which a wealthy
French businessman offered to
pay any fines imposed.

Shock at Labour councillors Netanyahu-Hitler slur Liberals back transgender project

CONSERVATIVE FRIENDS of Israel chairman Sir Eric Pickles

It was with real shock that I

Familys joy at tributes to Berlins Nightingale

THE LONDON family of a famous
opera singer from Berlin who came
to London as a refugee in 1939 have
spoken about the extraordinary honour of attending two events profiling her life in the space of a month,
writes Stephen Oryszczuk.
Edith Bach, a soprano who died in
London in 1975, was known as the
Nightingale of Konigs Wusterhausen and was one of the
first German women to
be broadcast singing
on the radio.
But her singing
career was cut
short in 1934 because she was
Jewish, and in
1939, six weeks
before the war,
she fled to the UK
with her family, before being interned
on the Isle of Man as
an enemy alien for 10
months in 1940.
Now, her family has
seen her honoured in two
high-profile
but
unconnected
events a ceremony in Berlin, where
a new university hall of residence has
taken her name, and in the Isle of
Man, at the launch of an exhibition
on the women interned there.
Both events heard of Ediths life
and phenomenal voice, with recordings from 1928 made at the height of
her fame.

But Edith, who escaped with her

husband Martin Kaczinsky and her
two sons, struggled to settle in the
UK after the trauma of fleeing.
Shed been a grande dame of
Berlin, in high society, performing
concerts all over the place, broadcasting, but she never really adapted
to Britain, said her granddaughter
Tania Kaczinsky, who was present
at the Berlin ceremony.
I remember her as quite
sad. She used to sing in
the choir at Belsize Park
shul, but she never sang
professionally in England, even though she
could have. Her heart
wasnt in it. She felt
lost, as so many did.
Brandenburg University picked up the story
of Ediths local connection last year, from Fleeing from the Fuhrer, a
book written by her son
William, in which Ediths
story is related.
University officials contacted
the family, saying they wanted to
name a new campus building after
her, in a ceremony attended by the
German finance minister which took
place last month.
Three weeks later, the family were
in the Isle of Man, where an exhibition was opened on the women interned at Port Irene, the women-only
camp, where Edith was held to-

Music was her life, said William
this week. I remember her playing
the piano, singing everything from

arias to lullabies, as well as teaching

people to sing.
I remember taking her to the shul
on a Saturday, and if she was in a

ISRAELS DEAFENING
SILENT ALLIANCES
Many traditionally hostile Arab states are finding ways to work
with Israel behind closed doors, reports Stephen Oryszczuk
W

hen he was prime minister, David

Cameron told the Israeli parliament
to imagine Israel living alongside a
Palestinian state. Think of the capitals in the
Arab World where Israelis could travel, do
business and build a future, he said. Imagine
no more excuses for the 32 countries which
refuse to recognise Israel; and for the Arab
League, how many of those states yearn
today for a different relationship with Israel,
which the peace agreement would enable.
That was in 2014, a time when senior Israeli
officials whispered of a silent alliance between
Israel and Sunni Arab states over coffee in London hotel lobbies. Two years later, that silent
alliance seems deafening. In January, former
foreign minister Tzipi Livni said of Arab states:
We have the same understanding. In April, the
Israel Defence Forces deputy chief of staff told
of unprecedented intelligence-sharing.
In May, foreign policy chief Dore Gold spoke
of strategic convergence after his meeting
with a Bahraini counterpart at which, halfway
through, both men realised they had the same
points listed, all in the same order.
Words follow actions, and 2016 has already
been a very good year for Israeli diplomacy.
In the past three months alone, relations with
three of Israels nearest neighbours have
improved considerably.
In May, an architect of the Israel-Jordan peace
treaty was appointed the new Jordanian prime
minister, in an official role as head of normalisation with Israel, after religious Jews forays to
Al-Aqsa Mosque led to bilateral tensions.
In June, Israels long-awaited rapprochement
with Turkey was finally agreed, ending a six-year
hiatus and re-establishing critical security links
between the two former allies.
And in July, Egypts foreign minister turned up
in Jerusalem, the most senior Egyptian to visit
in nine years. He followed a new Egyptian
ambassador to Tel Aviv, installed in February,
four years after Cairos envoy was withdrawn in
2012, in protest over Israeli action in Gaza.
Yet perhaps the most interesting development
was a little-noticed visit by a former Saudi general last month. Only after he left was General
Anwar Majed Eshkis trip publicised. When it
was, it was condemned by Iran and Hezbollah
for bypassing the Palestinians, but Rabbi
Michael Melchior, a former Israeli minister who
met him, said the generals main aim was in fact
to discuss ways to get the peace process back
on track.
His idea was to involve Muslim religious leaders. To Melchiors great surprise, Eshki who is
also an imam thought other imams were now
ready to put their theological anti-Israel dogma
to one side in order to back a two-state push.
Many exciting things [are] happening these
days under the radar, said Melchior in a private
briefing afterwards. It can restore the belief
that peace is really an option, is really possible
for the two peoples hurting and bleeding here.
Could this really be the start of something?
Israel would dearly love better relations with

bloc, and it also creates many opportunities,
but there is a price to pay. The Netanyahu government thinks it can get without giving.
Maybe theyll get trade missions or something,
but the Saudis certainly wont recognise Israel
until there is a Palestinian state.
Thats the traditional view, says BICOMs
Israel-based analyst Richard Pater, but Israel
knows that Arab capitals no longer prioritise a
peace deal as they once did, and that Arab
funding to Gaza and the West Bank has halved
in recent years.
Due to the changing nature of the region,
through the new alliances and reliances, Israels
hand has been further strengthened and the
Palestinian issue has mutually been pushed
down the order of priorities, he says.
But it cant be ignored. The latest thinking
is moving away from a dynamic where Israel
only gets rewards after it has signed a final deal
with the Palestinians.
He suggests there could be gradual steps to
normalisation or even a parallel track, which can
further entice a sceptical Israeli public to support concessions. We live in hope.
Meanwhile, the conversations carry on, with
diplomatic front doors closed, back doors open,
and a reciprocal Israeli visit to Saudi Arabia, Melchior says, likely much sooner than you think.

Orthodox sect bans women from uni

COMMUNITY LEADERS have rejected a
ruling from rabbis of the Satmar Orthodox sect in London which bans women
from university. It follows an edict, written in Yiddish and published in The Independent, which described university
education as dangerous for women,
and against the Torah.
A Board of Deputies spokesperson said:
The mainstream Jewish community would
certainly reject this view. Jewish girls and
boys should all have the opportunity to go
to university if that is what they want.
At the same time, we must be mindful
not to stigmatise or generalise about the

Anjem Choudarys wife in filthy Jews tirade

ANJEM CHOUDARYS wife is
under police investigation after
being featured in a documentary about British women who
support Islamic State.
The programme, broadcast in
November 2015, features Rubana

The father-of-five was a leading

A-LEVEL RESULTS

STUDENTS AT Jewish schools in the UK gained

top marks in the exam results last week, with
record numbers gaining the best scores and securing their places at top-flight universities.
Just fewer than half of all JFS and Yavneh results
were graded A* or A, while at JCoSS almost four
in ten exam results were marked at the same level.
Around a quarter of all grades awarded nationally are A* or A, so the Jewish schools were once
again shown to be punching above their weight.
At JFS, where 81 percent of results were graded
B or higher, teachers celebrated the schools best
A-Level performance in three years, with similar
scenes at King David High School, Manchester,
where 80 percent of grades were B or above.
At Yavneh College, 81 percent claimed A* to B
grades, a total which was slightly down on last
years 84 percent, as headteacher Spencer Lewis
paid tribute to all students, including the eight
going to Oxford or Cambridge, the most in the
schools history.
At JCoSS, where two-thirds of grades were at B
or above, headteacher Patrick Moriarty said:
These students have been with us for only two
years, and these excellent results reflect the hard
work put in by them and teachers alike.
He added that AS Level grades from Year 12
the schools first home-grown cohort of sixth-formers had far exceeded expectations and the
school looked forward to the groups full A-Level
results next year.
At Hasmonean, 76 percent of students attained
A*-B grades, with executive headteacher Andrew
McCluskey saying the students had fulfilled their
potential, and surpassed even our own very
high expectations. Immanuel College celebrated a 100 percent pass rate, with 70 per cent
of all grades being A* or A. This marked the
schools highest ever proportion of A*-As
recorded, with an increase of more than 20 percent from the previous year. A spokesperson told
Jewish News: We offer our congratulations to all
our candidates, and to those who supported their
success: the grades and the prestigious courses
attained speak for themselves.
King Solomon High School saw the same result
as 2015, with 75 percent of grades in the range of
A* C. Headteacher Matthew Slater said: We
are delighted that all the hard work, dedication
and commitment of our students has led to such
success at A-level.
Two students from JCoSS will be going to

medical school and one to Cambridge, and three

King David students will be going to Oxford or
Cambridge. An impressive 15 JFS students are on
their way to Oxbridge, with a further five choosing to attend medical school.
Likewise, the JFS team said it was thrilled at
this years results. It comes after a torrid two years,
in which the school was judged to require improvement by national inspectorate Ofsted. JFS
headteacher Jonathan Miller resigned in May, after
a mysterious and sudden leave of absence.

Free seats at shul Pole death camp plea Rape attack appeal Streisand with an s
A MIDDLESEX synagogue has been
prompted to offer free seats for High Holy
Day services in recognition that people may
be struggling in the wake of a post-Brexit
economic downturn.
Staines and District United Synagogue
made the offer this week, to include the
New Year (Rosh Hashanah), Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur), Festival of Tabernacles
(Succot) and all intervening Sabbaths.
With the drop in the pound and the cut
in interest rates, everything is becoming
more expensive, said the Rev. David Kale.
We see many young families and those
on fixed incomes and even those in regular
employment are finding it more difficult to
cope financially.
He added that synagogue fees often
have to be put on the back burner and
many people feel nervous about attending
synagogue over the High Holy Day period
because they may be in arrears with membership or not even a member of a particular congregation.
On the offer of free seats, he said: We
would like to offer some comfort.

THE POLISH government has proposed a new

law that would make the use of terms like
Polish death camps a crime punishable by a
jail sentence.
The bill would prohibit anyone assigning
blame to Poland for the actions of Nazi Germany. Historians and artists would be exempt
in their work.
Drafted by the Justice Ministry, the measure would also make accusing Poland of international war crimes or crimes against peace
or humanity an offence. The punishment
would be a fine or up to three years in jail.
Diplomatic actions to counteract the falsification of our history and protect the good
name of Poland and the Polish people have
proved ineffective, the government said.
There are still comments, especially in the
foreign media, suggesting the participation of
Poland and Poles in the crimes of the Second
World War.
The Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum has
created software that lets journalists know
when they have used the offending term Polish death camp and corrects it to read Nazi
death camp in Poland.

POLICE ARE asking a woman who took refuge

8.45pm on 16 August to come forward.
The woman, who is white and described as
being about 5ft 7in with long dark hair, is understood to have dived into the Finchley Road
centre to escape the attentions of a man police believe may have been responsible for an
attempted rape 40 minutes earlier.
The woman, who left Finchley Road and
Frognal rail station at around 8.40pm, is being
sought by police who hope she can confirm
whether her pursuer is the same man who
tried to rape an 18-year-old girl at knife-point
in Billy Fury Way. A 22-year-old man has been
charged in relation to that attack.
In an appeal to the woman over the West
Hampstead incident, Det Con Scott Barefoot
said: If you recognise yourself from this description please come forward.
It is really important because shortly before this incident another woman was the victim of an attempted rape and we need to
establish whether these events are linked and
if you have any information that could help
our inquiries.

The legendary singer did just that when
she finally grew tired of hearing her voice
being mispronounced by Apples Siri software. The system acts as a kind of electronic personal assistant, answering
questions and making recommendations.
After five years of hearing the second s

and called Apple chief executive Tim Cook
to complain. And it worked.
Cook, who took over from Steve Jobs in
2011, agreed immediately to have Siri reprogrammed as part of the next scheduled
update of the software on 30 September,
so that Streisands famous surname would
be pronounced as it should be.

40 rabbis attack Trumps hateful rhetoric

FORTY AMERICAN Orthodox
clergy co-signed a letter condemning Republican presidential
candidate Donald Trump for what
they called his hateful rhetoric
and intolerant policy proposals.
The letter, whose signatories
include Irving Yitz Greenberg,
founding president of Clal, the
National Jewish Center for
Learning and Leadership in New
York City, was published on the
website Cleveland.com.
Noting that religion should be
invoked with care when addressing politics, the rabbis added:
Nevertheless, there are times
when the political discourse veers
into morally offensive language
and policy proposals that violate
fundamental religious norms.
The rabbis said their core re-

condemn Trumps hateful rhetoric and intolerant policy proposals in the strongest terms.

They added that in the current

presidential election campaign
they had been deeply troubled to hear proposals that condemned whole groups and

which were justified by pointing

to evil behaviours by members
of that group or religion.
Trump has called for Muslims
to be banned from entering the
US and for extreme vetting of
immigrants.
Trump attracted outrage after
lashing out at Muslim-American
parents whose son died while
serving in Iraq. After the soldiers
father criticised him, Trump hit
back by suggesting, among other
things, that the boys mother
wasnt allowed to speak.
In a reference to this, the rabbis
wrote: We were shocked by the
disrespect shown to parents who
suffered the greatest pain losing
a son who died in the service of
our country. The Torah commands us to comfort mourners.

EDITORIAL COMMENT AND READERS LETTERS

How to maintain
A-mazing results
WITH THE A-Level results in, and GCSE results pending
as Jewish News went to press, all signs suggest that
2016 has been another spectacular year for Jewish
education. A huge mazeltov from us for all those who
did well.
Using the word spectacular is both a pleasure and
very purposeful. Year-on-year success can make us
complacent, or at least sanguine, about the incredible
performance of Jewish schools.
We need to remind ourselves that it is spectacular
what they achieve and be ever mindful that this should
not be taken for granted.
Why is it so good? Pushy parents? Intelligent genes?
Yes, if you buy into the stereotypes, but in fact, it is far
more likely to be a mix of factors, including culture (we
Jews love to learn), organisation (top school leadership
is crucial) and most of all wonderful teachers, with
whom we are blessed. Just take a look at the shortlisted nominees for Jewish News annual Jewish
Schools Awards.
It is absolutely right that we celebrate the students
success and name the top performers. But we should
do likewise for the teachers who do such a good job.
How do we improve? We should use our advantages
to our advantage. To a phenomenal degree, the whole
community is invested in learning and education and
the skills within that community could always be put to
better use. We should aim to fuse both interest and
initiative.
In America right now, there are community-wide
consultations, whereby everyone and anyone who has
a view on how Jewish teaching could be improved is
invited in for a one-on-one meeting with educational
overseers. In 2016, at this time of strategic review,
could this be a model to replicate for Londons Jewish
community? It might open doors and invite new ideas.
It would certainly give everyone a say.
One for the common room suggestions box.

DAHL WAS WRONG: MANY

JEWS FOUGHT IN WW2
I would like to congratulate your columnist Jenni Frazer on her excellent article
on Steven Spielbergs The BFG (Jewish
News, 28 July). I was surprised when I
read he had agreed to make a film of a
book by a well-known anti-Semite.
Thinking back on Spielbergs Schindlers
List and his wonderful endeavour to list
every Holocaust survivor, how could he
bring himself to be connected with Roald
Dahl, who claimed he never saw a Jewish
serviceman in the Second World War?
Well, Mr Dahl, if you can still hear me,
here is a list of my relations who served
in the war: my brother-in-law Harold
Fleischer, RAF wireless operator
Lancaster Bomber, Sergeant Joe Martin

Loneliness is indeed a scourge, so I want
to thank your journalist Stephen

Sometimes its hard to make the first
move towards befriending older people
and Mitzvah Day offers a way to start
through Sunshine for Seniors, my

Teams of volunteers visit care homes
(Jewish and non-Jewish) on and around
Mitzvah Day, singing songs, playing cards,
serving tea, chatting and, as we put it,
bringing a little joy just where it is
needed.
Of course, the joy is as much for the

themselves.

THE JEWISH CARE

THAT WAS NOT THERE
I write in response to your recent article on
loneliness in the Jewish community (Jewish
News, 4 August).
I am an emergency first responder in St
Marys Bay in Kent, not far from
Folkestone. In the course of my work, I
attend to many incidents in care homes. A
few months ago, I came across an elderly
lady who had reported a non-injury fall.
While I gave care, she told me she was
Jewish, but that like so many of her age
she was always told to hide this aspect of
her identity.
She then explained that she would dearly
like to talk to a rabbi and reconnect.
I was touched by this and set off to help,
but came across what can only be
described as a wall. I am not Jewish, and
there is no Jewish community in this area,
so I began calling synagogues and communities elsewhere in Kent, but the response I
got was: Shes too far away. Even speaking to Hatzolah, the medical charity, the
contact there refused to give me his details
because they didnt know me.
For a community that prides itself on how
well it looks after its members, I can only say
that, from my experience, this is not always
the case. I do not know if this lady is still

I am national chairman of the Jewish
Association of Cultural Societies (JACS).
We run more than 20 clubs, mainly in the
London area. We meet every Wednesday

together with tea, coffee, biscuits and

Some clubs also organise occasional
outside visits, and twice a year my wife

resort where all their needs are attended
to. We have even had someone who was

IVOR BADDIEL SHOULD

STAY OUT OF POLITICS
Ivor Baddiel seems to have amnesia or is
extremely uninformed. He doesnt seem
to recall or have noticed that there are at
least two nominated candidates in the US
presidential race at the time of writing
and the one he doesnt like Trump is
opposed by the other, a woman who, on
almost a daily basis, has received and
agreed with the most anti-Israeli (and
therefore anti-Semitic) comments from
Max Blumenthal, one of the leading
modern self-hating Jews of our times.
We know this from an analysis of her
leaked emails which she hasnt denied.
Blumenthal has the ear of Hillary Clinton
and recently barracked and physically
harassed a prominent American rabbi
for his supportive views of Israel and for
his critical views of Clintons recently
exposed secret stance on Israel.
Israeli flags were also burned by democratic supporters at the recent Democratic
National Convention.
Trump, on the other hand, has two
family members who have married Jews.
He has spoken up for Israel and is a
strong critic of Iran a major sponsor of
terror against Israel and Jews.
Sure, Trump says odious things. But
what matters is what he does. His recent
track record in speaking up for and
supporting Jews and Israel and in opposing Irans aggression is greater than the
recent record of Clinton, who was just
endorsed by another self-hating Jew
in the form of Bernie Sanders, who
also hates Israel, given his ridiculous
comments about the most recent hostilities in Gaza.
Baddiel may class himself as a comedian but, if we listen to his political views
about how crazy it is for Jews to support
Trump, then the joke will be on us.
He should stick to comedy and stay out
of Jewish politics.

The original Mobot

In response to Russell Ballens letter

(Jewish News,11 August), there was no
intention, as I made clear in the first
sentence of my original letter, to condone
any intended contextual comparison made
by Jeremy Corbyn between Israel and ISIS,
nor to align myself in any way with his
distasteful opinions.
The point I was making was that,
on this occasion, perhaps unintentionally and certainly out of character, he had
differentiated between Jews and Israel
a distinction that he invariably blurs in
conflating the two.

OPINION:
RABBIJENNI
MIRIAMFRAZER
BERGER AND MARK MAIER
OPINION:

Gloves come off as mayor

declares war on Corbyn

WHO SAID this, exactly a year ago? I recognise that at the last mayoral election and at the
general election, there were many Jews who
felt they simply couldnt vote Labour. Being a
Jewish Londoner in 2015 is a challenge. I didnt
fully understand the scale of anti-Semitism.
Well done and a packet of (kosher) crisps
to anyone who recognised the words of the
man who is now Londons mayor, the former
MP for Tooting, Sadiq Khan.
From a Jewish standpoint Khan came trailing
some dubious baggage. He had been the UK
lawyer for the notorious Nation of Islam leader
Louis Farrakhan, who had made many antiSemitic comments, including a suggestion that
Jews were responsible for 9/11.
And, much more to the point, Khan was one
of the MPs who nominated Jeremy Corbyn to
be leader of the Labour Party, ensuring his
name was on the ballot paper in the interests
of diversity and a wider debate.
A year on and Sadiq, like all of us, has had
some hard lessons to learn about Labour politics, and, in particular, the coterie surrounding
the inner leadership of Her Majestys
Opposition. Intelligently, the mayor, true to his
pre-election pledges, has been keeping his
head down and not engaging in the rough-andtumble of Labours drawn-out public suicide.
Tempting though it must have been, Mayor

Khan said nothing when his Labour predecessor, Ken Livingstone, became embroiled in an
utterly unnecessary row about Hitler; and he
said nothing about the farrago involving a peerage for his fellow lawyer, Shami Chakrabarti, in
a suggested quid pro quo for giving Labour a
relatively clean slate over anti-Semitism.
This, the mayor evidently decided, was not
mayor of London business, and in that regard
Londoners have cause to be grateful, since
what Londoners quite clearly want is a mayor
who pays attention to Londons needs and not
someone giving a running commentary on the
political lunacies of the day.
Mr Khan must also, privately, have had cause
to thank his lucky stars that Jeremy Corbyn was
not his ultimate boss, for although Sadiq Khan
won the election on a Labour ticket, there is no
doubt in my mind that he won an enormous
number of personal votes from people who,
because of Jeremy Corbyn, could barely bring
themselves to vote for Labour. So here we sit, a
storm-tossed year later, on the eve of yet
another race for the Labour leadership, and the
mayors patience has finally snapped.
Over the weekend, Sadiq Khan outlined
why even though he apparently continues to
believe in Corbyns standing as a pillar of the
Labour Party he cannot support him to
remain in post. Explaining his decision to

support Owen Smith as leader, he wrote:

Jeremy has proved that he is unable to organise an effective team, and has failed to win the
trust and respect of the British people.
And if youre wondering what this has to do
with the Jewish community, I am sorry to have
to direct your attention to a poisonous debate
playing itself out on social media.
Over a picture of Sadiq Khan wearing a
kippah and holding a piece of matzah
presumably at some interfaith seder some
keyboard charmer has asked: Who owns you,
Sadiq Khan? In other words, support for Owen
Smith, instead of Corbyn, is tantamount to
throwing your lot in with the Jews.
Id like to think that the mayors intervention
will have some resonance outside City Hall and
that his plainly heartfelt distress about what
Corbyn is doing to the Labour Party will be
echoed elsewhere.
But you know what? Even if Khan is wrong,
and Corbyn does get re-elected, a gauntlet
has now been thrown down by the mayor. No
more Mr Nice Guy when it comes to dealing
with Corbyns Labour, which, horrifyingly, looks
as though it might be on the verge of letting
both Livingstone and Galloway back into the
party. And throwing your lot in with the Jews
is not so bad, really. We dont own the mayor,
but luckily, nor does Jeremy Corbyn.

OPINION: LORD BOURNE & RABBI NATAN LEVY

UK NEWS

Eight good reasons why

religion isnt the problem
WE LIVE in a time of confusion and fear about
religion. Europe has suffered a series of terrible
terrorist attacks and there is no end in sight to
the violence in the Middle East. These atrocities will cause many people to ask what faith
can possibly offer society.
Some might conclude that religion is the problem a relic of the past and an obstacle to
progress wed be better off without. But to think
that way hands victory to the terrorists, because
it leaves their narrative of hatred unchallenged.
Increasing religious understanding and respect has become more urgent than ever, and
should not be neglected. It requires us all to celebrate the good work of people of all faiths,
and to recognise their enormous contribution
to communities across the country.
This month I saw it for myself. Within eight
hours I visited eight places of worship in London:
Jain, Hindu and Zoroastrian temples; a mosque,
Catholic and Church of England churches, a synagogue and the Buddhist Society.
The purpose of this whistle-stop faith tour
was not simply to set my officials an interesting
logistical challenge; it was to show that within
hours you can visit places of worship representing our largest religions through to our smaller
faiths, and see how they are all making a huge
contribution to our communities.
I was inspired by what I saw. Seeing so many
people come together who want to learn, de-

bate, and serve their communities shows

there is a real appetite for faith to be a core part
of public life. As Minister for Faith, my job is to
ensure they have the governments support.
In the past, governments have been reluctant
to talk about faith; treating it instead as a purely
personal characteristic.
The problem with this approach is that it misunderstands how faith motivates and sustains
people to challenge injustice, protect the vulnerable and serve their communities.
William Wilberforce, a man of faith and the
driving force behind the abolition of the slave
trade, said: Let everyone regulate his conduct
... by the golden rule of doing to others as in similar circumstances we would have them do to us,
and the path of duty will be clear before him.
Were promoting this path of duty by supporting practical co-operation between faith groups.
It is about people from different backgrounds
coming together: not just sitting around talking,
but working together for the common good and
tackling shared social problems.
It is in this spirit that we started our Near
Neighbours programme. Since its launch in
2011, more than 1,100 projects have been established, benefiting a million people in some of
Englands most diverse faith communities, including more than 50 percent of the projects offering new skills to the unemployed.
Visiting these eight places of worship con-

firmed how much faith can contribute to our society. But if my faith tour was inspiring, it also
had sombre moments.
At Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Acton, I paid
my respects to Father Jacques Hamel, the priest
murdered during mass and at Hampstead Synagogue I heard about the security measures that
have to be taken in the Jewish community.
All this on the same day the Community Security Trust revealed the first six months of the year
saw the second highest level of anti-Semitic incidents ever recorded.
The government is providing more than
13.4million to ensure the security of Jewish
faith schools, synagogues and communal buildings, but we also want to create an environment
that prevents anti-Semitic hate crime happening in the first place.
My department is investing 1million in new
projects to prevent hate crime in schools and
playgrounds, part of a wider four-year hate crime
action plan, which will tackle all hate crime by
boosting reporting, protecting victims and targeting perpetrators with tougher sentencing.
We are greatly enriched by the diversity of
faiths that call our country home and as part of
my tour day I saw first-hand how faith groups are
playing a full role in public life.
Our faith communities are open and welcoming and making a real difference on the ground.
This is something we should all celebrate.

Lord Bourne
Communities minister

We are greatly enriched by

Proof that interfaith work

does make a difference
THE WORLD became kinder last month, a
fact you may have missed in the usual fray. A
few weeks ago the United Reform Church
tabled one of those anti-Israel motions anyone seriously involved in constructive JewishChristian relations has come to dread.
It was a perfect storm of bad theology and
holier-than-thou politics, urging the URC to
adopt the credo of the infamous Inheritance of
Abraham report, containing lines such as: The
promise to Abraham about land is fulfilled
through the impact of Jesus, not by restoration
of land to the Jewish people.Ouch!
It called for the usual knee-jerk response
for the URC to boycott all Israeli goods and
people, which would, of course, give the
Jewish state the dubious distinction of being
the one country in this broken world under
boycott by that Church body.
When I read the motion, I nearly cried. We
had been here before. With the Methodists
in 2010, the Iona Community in 2012, the
Church of Scotland in 2013, the Union of
Welsh Independent Churches in 2015 and
thats only the Christian groups in the UK. No
need to mention America or, worse, Europe,
and the outcome was invariably the same.
The motion would pass, the church would
subsequently issue a carefully-worded statement pointing out this boycott was only
about Israel and praying the Jewish community here could just turn the other cheek and
keep up the good interfaith relations despite
a little pesky boycott of the Jewish State.

But thats not what happened. The URC

voted down the motion. It decided a complex, deeply-contentious and long-entrenched issue like Israel and Palestine
couldnt be solved with an hour of handwringing on the assembly floor.
The URC called simply for peace, justice
and renewed dialogue on all sides and then
backed up its words with a charge to its Mission Committee to create genuine projects
of engagement, here and in the Holy Land,
to resource good words with good actions.
So there was no story. The Board of
Deputies issued no strongly-worded statement, the Jewish press didnt decry the rising
tide of anti-Semitism, the pro-Israel groups
sent out no letters to any editors.
But, we miss the still small voices of
change at our peril. A few key elements
clicked into place to turn that URC debate
on the Holy Land into something rather
sane, and it is worth exploring preciselywhat
came together so finely.
It probably was not the high-level meetings between the leadership on both sides.
Before each church vote the leaders always
meet, the Board of Deputies invariably
shouts, the Christians invariably listen with
listening faces, and the motions have always
passed.
Its probably not the interfaith establishments that envision themselves as honest
brokers. They do have their place, but the
emotional undercurrents about the Holy Land

are deeply entrenched in the grassroots and

the local, precisely the arenas that most interfaith organisations, who deal almost exclusively with gatekeepers, cant easily access.
So, what happened to shift the URC debate in such a positive direction? Simple. A
few rabbis found out about the motion and
called their local URC ministers. I just spoke
with the reverend about my family in Israel,
one rabbi recalled of such a meeting.
I mentioned that a boycott against everything Israeli felt like a boycott against some
core part of myself and my community here
in the UK. It wasnt loud, it wasnt aggressive, just a few rabbis willing to share with
church leaders willing to listen.
And it seemed to work. Every so often,
someone will ask me whats the purpose for
all this interfaith work. Im aiming to make
my job obsolete, I tell them. That real, emotive, honest interfaith work about the issues
that matter most to the Jewish community
will become a normative component of every
rabbis job portfolio. So that walking across
the road to speak to the local minister about
Israel becomes the norm, rather than the
aberration reserved for a threatening motion.
And so too, that every Jewish child will visit
a mosque before his or her bar and batmitzvah and every shul will host one non-Jewish
clergy on its pulpit once a year.
Who knows, with fewer interfaith experts
and more interfaith Jews, the world might
just keep on growing a bit kinder.

STREETING,
MPMARK MAIER

Khan, not Corbyn, typifies

the very best of Labour
SADIQ KHAN ought to be the most popular
Labour politician in the UK. He has the largest
personal mandate of any elected politician in
British history. His victory in May wasnt just a
great triumph for Labour, it was a triumph for
hope and decency over one of the nastiest dogwhistle campaigns that London has seen.
His first 100 days have demonstrated the virtue
of winning elections, putting Labour values into
practice by cutting the cost of transport, putting
additional capacity into community policing and
launching the most ambitious plan to tackle poor
air quality that London has ever seen.
Instead, Londons new mayor was booed by an
audience of 4,000 people in Kilburn last weekend
at a London rally supporting Jeremy Corbyns bid
to be re-elected as leader of the Labour Party.
We should not be surprised. Since Corbyns
election as leader, the kinder, gentler politics he
promised has been offered only to those who give
their unwavering loyalty to the cult of the leader.
What has been surprising has been the sinister
anti-Semitic abuse Khan has received on social
media; like the Twitter user who posted a picture
of the mayor breaking his fast at shul wearing a
kippah and asking: Who owns you, Sadiq Khan?
Another Twitter user said Khan, spends his
time writing articles to help his masters in Tel Aviv.
And there was the article headed Sadiq Khan is a
Zionist, the Friends of Israel group are trying to ruin
Corbyn, which described him as a backstabber,

accompanied by a photo of the mayor speaking

in front of the London Jewish Forum banner.
Not all Khans poisonous detractors have used
the term Zionist as a label of abuse against the
first-ever Muslim mayor of a major western city.
One Twitter user remarked: Sadiq Khan is
not, as such, a Zionist, but a ruthless person of
Pakistani Muslim origins who has decided that
he needs Jewish influence. So many bigoted
tropes in under 140 characters.
Anti-Semitism in and around the Labour Party
didnt begin with Jeremy Corbyns leadership.
Like any major political party, it isnt immune from
the prejudices of the society it serves. Nor do I
believe the majority of Labour Party members, or
even the majority of Corbyn supporters, are Jewhaters. But the toxic climate created by Corbyns
leadership has left anti-Semites emboldened.
The report in The Sunday Times about claims
made by Josh Simons, a former policy adviser to
Corbyn, about his experiences in the leaders
office, show how deep the rot has set in at the
top of the Labour Party.
The paper reported that Simons evidence to
the Chakrabarti inquiry into Labours anti-Semitism
problem included claims that a member of
Corbyns office talked about a Jewish conspiracy, that the leaders office had prepared for a
meeting with the Board of Deputies with flippant
disdain and that he had been subjected to an
inquisition about his own views on Israel by a

senior member of Corbyns team. Worryingly,

none of these claims about the culture of the
leaders office made it into Chakrabartis report.
Sadiq Khans treatment demonstrates that antiSemites on the left dont confine their hateful
abuse to Jewish politicians, but my Jewish
colleagues have experienced the worst of it.
The party of Manny Shinwell, Ian Mikardo and
Leo Abse has become one in which Luciana
Berger, Louise Ellman and Ruth Smeeth receive
online abuse and death threats. Small wonder it
has left lifelong servants and supporters of Labour
like Lord Parry Mitchell contemplating cutting up
their membership cards if Corbyn wins again.
As ballot papers land and more than half-amillion Labour Party members and supporters
prepare to choose our next leader, there is an
opportunity to turn the page on this dreadful
chapter in our history. The re-election of Corbyn
would be a recipe for further division and hostility
that neither the party nor the country can afford.
Sadiq Khan embodies the best of what
Labours traditional values can achieve. The story
of the council estate boy who went on to become
a human-rights lawyer, a government minister
and the first Muslim mayor of London embodies
the vision of the society that my party wants to
build: one where ability, not background, determines where people end up.
He has called on Labour members to vote for
Owen Smith. Lets hope they heed his advice.

LOVE ME DOUGH!
Enjoying fame as a TV personality,
Assi Azar decided to try his hand
at writing for a change. As Francine
Wolfisz reports, hes produced a
hit with a show about a baker

atching that first episode was great it

was as exciting as my wedding day! So
gushes Assi Azar, the creative talent behind a hit Israeli rom-com, which was broadcast
on Channel 4 this week.
The 37-year-old, known in his home country as
a television personality and co-host of Big Brother
Israel, has scored a success with Beauty and the
Baker despite it being his first time trying his
hand at scriptwriting.
Now the unlikely love story between Noa Hollander (Rotem Sela), one of the richest and most
beautiful women in Israel, and Amos Dahari (Aviv
Alush), a modestly-earning baker who still lives at
home with his family, is available for UK audiences
to view via Walter Presents, Channel 4s on-demand service for foreign-language dramas.
It is one of Israels highest-rated drama series
ever, and audiences were gripped by the
tongue-in-cheek, modern-day fairy tale, which
also throws into the mix Vanessa, Amos spurned
ex-girlfriend of nine years, Noas former celebrity
boyfriend (played by Jason Lewis from Sex In
The City), her interfering agent, his meddling
family and a relentless media circus.
If thats not enough to tantalise, the series has
also been produced by Keshet International, the
same Israeli company behind the global television hit Homeland.

The concept of a princess falling for a pauper

is of course nothing new in fact, Azar admits to
having taken inspiration from the Richard Curtis
box office hit Notting Hill but he has given it a
thoroughly Israeli twist, mixed with elements
from his own life.
Because it was my first time scriptwriting, my
script editor suggested I should write something
that is close to my own life, so that it would be
easier to build the characters, says Azar, who
adds that just like his main character, Amos, he
grew up in a family of bakers from Bat Yam.
My older brother, like Amos, was my dads
right hand and my dad was very proud of him because he came to work in the bakery every day.
Im more like the middle child, Asaf. I always used
to cause my father problems, because I hated
working there I wanted to be an actor!
Still, all those years of pounding the dough into
beautiful baked goods must surely have paid off?
Oh yeah, I helped the actors on set learn how
to knead the dough properly, but dont ask me to
bake now. Today Im the worse cook ever. I can
make omelette and toast, and thats about it!
In creating his female characters, Azar reveals
that he was equally inspired by his own life. I ask
if he feels closer to Noa or Vanessa.
Noa certainly represents the famous side in
me, but if you met my husband [Albert], he will

Scenes from the show main, Amos in a car with Noa; above, In the family bakery; right, Vanessa at a restaurant

tell you I am Vanessa, 100 per cent! he quips.

Im very loud, very dramatic and I always want
things to go my way. At the end of the day,
Vanessa just wants to realise her dream and get
married. I can be annoying like that, but Im kind
of in love with her.
Given this was his first foray into scriptwriting
and a second series is already in the works, I ask
the television personality if this is the direction
he would now like his career to take.
I love writing. I say Im a writer first
then a television host. Its a happy
experience for me though in

truth, it was the most stressed Ive ever felt in my

life!
Taking three years to complete, Azar says he
also felt pressure to produce a script that would
resonate with his audience.
I thought if it failed, I would die. I put so much
of myself into it. But when it did work, it was
amazing.
Beauty and the Baker is the latest in a stream
of shows that Israel has successfully exported beyond its borders.
Keshet International is one of three companies,
including Dori Media and Armoza Formats, which
together have sold more than 100 shows
around the globe to such far-flung places
as Indonesia, Japan, Finland and Brazil.
With that in mind, it seems things have
never been better than todays golden
age for Israeli television. It always
amazes me how American series get
budgets worth millions of dollars and we
can do an entire series for the same
amount it costs to do one US episode,
agrees Azar.
When I wrote Beauty and the Baker,
it was my dream, like many other Israeli
creatives, that it would be broadcast to
other countries and would get international attention.
So yes, it is a very good time to be in
Israeli television now, because we make
amazing products. No wonder the US
and UK are paying attention.
Beauty and the Baker is available to watch
on Channel 4 On Demand.

2 TRAVEL

GOLEM... GOSH!
Naomi Frankel travels to Prague and discovers the
Czech capitals mysterious Jewish legend and
tribute to Holocaust victims at Theresienstadt

eve only been in Prague for a

few hours but weve already
received two warnings over
our safety.
The cautions come not from the police, but our tour guide, Ron. Dont
go up there, he warns in a thick
Czech accent, pointing to the murky
brown attic of the Old New Synagogue, where the Golem, a supernatural creature, is reported to still lie.
You might not come back down.
He proceeds to tell my friend Tina
and I about the mysterious Maharal of Prague, who created
an artificial human from
mud and clay in the late
16th century to protect
the Jewish community.
Ron then lowers his
voice
theatrically.
When the attic was
renovated in 1883, no
Golem was found.
However, a recent legend tells of a Nazi
agent climbing to the
attic during the Second
World War and trying to
stab the Golem but he
died instead.
We are then informed that the
broken steps leading to the attic have
been so designed to prevent any further curious visitors.
On that cheery note, we tour inside
the synagogue itself, a grand 13th century Gothic building still used by the
Jewish community today.
I am captivated by the rich
stonework and antique furnishings and
especially by an ornate chair to the
right of the altar, which is cordoned off.
I start to head over and Ron emphatically tells me to stop.
He holds his finger up to caution me.
Dont sit there, young lady. That was
the Maharals chair and legend has it

that anyone who sits there will die.

Feeling suitably spooked, I decide
not to risk it.
We explore the Jewish quarter, Josefov, visiting the six synagogues in the
city. Pinkas Synagogue proves to be an
especially moving experience.
We walk around in silence, looking on
the walls at the names of those who
perished in the Holocaust.
Ron then takes us to the Old Jewish
cemetery, the largest in Europe. I am astounded to see the crooked Gothic
gravestones piled upon one
other, jostling for space, and
learn this is due to it being
the only burial place for
Prague Jews from the
15th to 18th centuries.
Exhausted from
the day, we take a
cab back to our
hotel and I marvel at
just how beautiful
this city is. Boasting
quaint
cobbled
streets and magnificent architecture, the
pastel colours of Prague
paint a pretty picture in
the late afternoon sunshine.
I am struck at how fairytale-like
it all seems. Our driver, Tina, laughs, interjecting that it is nicknamed The City
of One Hundred Spires for a reason.
The Intercontinental fits nicely into
this theme. The grand hotel looks like a
palace, all flags flying and gold embossed exterior. The interior is just as
impressive, boasting a grand lobby and
bar. Part of its appeal is that it is centrally located in Praha 1, near the Jewish
Quarter and close to kosher restaurants.
On our hunt for dinner, we end up in the
Chabad milky restaurant Shelanum, a
small and homey diner that smells wonderful to our famished noses.
The next day we head to Thieren-

stadt (Terezin), a Nazi transit camp

where tens of thousands died from malnutrition and more than 150,000 people
were held for months or years before
being transported to other camps, including Treblinka and Auschwitz.
Our guide takes us through the
Minor Fortress, describing the purpose of each room and area in the
camp, using the building numbers that
were originally used by the Nazis. Seeing the barracks with the original beds
and furniture intact is an especially stirring experience. We enter another
room, lined with sinks that have no
plumbing. Our guide informs us this
was to fool Red Cross inspectors into
believing that people were humanely
treated and had access to fresh water.
We visit a vast execution space near
a moat, where gallows still swing. I
stand there, but soon feel suffocated by
the thick air, almost hearing the cries of
the victims, the ringing gunshots and
the cruel laughter of the guards.
We are glad to leave and make our
way to the Major Fortress, which
houses the Museum of the Ghetto.
The highlight is the artwork from the

thousands of children held at Thierenstadt. Many were sent on to their

death at Auschwitz, but some survived
to tell their story. The exhibits are effective in chronicling the story of the
camp, and many of the visitors that
day are deeply moved.
The last stop on our tour is to
Prague Castle, which according to the
Guinness Book of Records is the
largest ancient castle in the world, occupying an area of almost 70,000sqm,
or more than 18 acres.
Our guide brings the majestic castle
to life by exploring the turbulent history surrounding the various buildings,
and their royal and presidential connections. We then stroll down Golden
Lane, a fascinating ancient street dating from the 15th Century. Its interesting to learn this was where fine artisans
lived and worked, fulfilling the requirements of the residents of the castle.
We cannot leave Prague without
crossing the famous Charles Bridge, a
14th century stone bridge linking the
two sides of Prague. Lit up at night, the
views of the Vltava River, the city, the
towers and sculptures in the bridge are

simply amazing. Our day is rounded off

with a sumptuous dinner at the Chabad
Grill Restaurant, which offers sumptuous cuisine at an affordable price.
I opt for the schnitzel, which hand
on heart is the best Ive ever tasted
(sorry, mum!). Full to the brim, we
while away the evening by exploring
the Old Town Square, with its enchanting Astronomical Clock and little souvenir shops, before ending up in the
vibrant Wenceslas Square.

2 ORTHODOX JUDAISM

Sedra:
Ekev
BY RABBI BORUCH

BOUDILOVSKY

TOWARDS THE end of Parashat Ekev

(Deuteronomy 11, 1321), we encounter
a very familiar passage. It is familiar because it is the second of three passages
recited twice a day, once in the morning
and once in the evening.
Although these biblical passages,
along with several blessings before and
after them, are recited within the context of daily prayer, they are actually a
separate unit.
This unit, referred to as Keriat Shema,
contains the fundamental ideas of our
faith. In fact, the obligation to recite it
twice a day is a biblical one.
We are also biblically obligated to attach physically the first two of these
three passages to our doorposts (the
commandment of Mezuzah).
These two passages are inserted,
along with several others, into phylacteries (Tefillin) as well.
The nature of the biblical commandment of Keriat Shema (reciting these
passages twice a day), is not limited to
a study exercise, in which we review the
theological building blocks of Judaism.
Such a review falls under the category
of Torah study, which we also but not

only engage in, whenever we recite

Keriat Shema.
This prayer extends beyond the cognitive and intellectual exercise of Torah
study, and enters the realm of profound
and binding meditation as well.
In discussing the order of these passages the Mishna (Tractate Berachot,
Chapter 2, Mishna 2) provides us with
an understanding of the very nature of
this meditation.
Rabbi Yehoshua ben Korchah said:
Why does the portion of Shema (the
first passage) precede that of Vehayah
Im Shamoa (the second passage)?
In order that one should first accept
upon themselves the yoke of Heavens
sovereignty, and afterward accept upon
themselves the yoke of the commandments.
These biblical passages compel us to
noble submission.
When reading these passages, we accept the Jewish challenge of living in accordance with the idea of an external
obligator.
When reciting Keriat Shema, we meditate on what it means to be Jewish and
how that continually affects our lives.
Twice a day, explains Rabbi Yehoshua
ben Korcha, we first accept upon ourselves the general yoke of Heavens sovereignty by reciting the first passage.
Then, when reciting the second passage, we accept upon ourselves the
yoke of all the detailed commandments.
When combined, these passages facilitate our ceaseless striving to humbly
accept Gods sovereignty.
All that we do each day is then
guided by the commitment made before and at the end of the day.

LISTER

THIS WEEK: So-And-So

PLONI ALMONI (So-And-So) enjoys the dubious
distinction of being the only explicitly anonymised
biblical character.
He appears in the last chapter of the Book of Ruth.
Ruth was a Moabite princess who had married a
Jewish man in Moab and converted to Judaism.
Ruths husband died and she moved to Bethlehem
with her poverty stricken mother-in-law Naomi.
Initially, Ruth had to glean behind the reapers to
put food on the table. Boaz, a relative in whose field
she gleaned, soon discerned Ruths great spiritual
qualities.
He offered to buy back the fields that had been
sold off by Naomis family, and marry Ruth as part of
the redemption.
There was, however, an impediment to the marriage. Ruth had a closer relative, Ploni Almoni, who
had the first right to redeem her estate and also to
propose marriage to her.
Therefore Boaz invited this relative to step in and
play his part.
Ploni Almoni was happy to buy back the land,
but he backed off when he learned that he should
offer to marry Ruth as well: I am unable to redeem

lest I destroy my inheritance. You redeem instead

of me, for I cannot. (Ruth 4:1-6)
What was wrong with marrying Ruth?
Our rabbis explain that Ploni Almoni was deterred
by Ruths Moabite heritage.
The Moabites had a difficult relationship with us
(Deuteronomy 23:3-4) and Ploni Almoni refused to
marry Ruth because of her heritage, even though
the Torah permitted it.
We can speculate on what motivated him. Perhaps
he thought that people would think ill of him and he
would lose his social standing.
Or maybe he was not convinced by the rabbis
ruling that marrying a Maobite woman was permitted, and he sought to be more religious than they
were, lest divine wrath bring ruin upon him.
The bottom line was the same: he chose not to
marry one of the saintliest Jews who ever lived.
The punchline to this story comes at the end of
the fourth chapter of Ruth, where the descendants
of Ruth are listed.
We learn that Ruths great grandson was none
other than King David, ancestor of the Messiah.
Had Ploni Almoni married Ruth, he would have
been an ancestor of some of the greatest luminaries
the Jewish people have ever known.
But instead, he wrote himself out of history, and
his concern for his good name meant that he is remembered with no name at all.

ONCE UPON a time when you left school

you either took a job, which was what most
people did, or went to university.
If you took a job, you would develop
skills and experience which, over time,
would turn your job into a career.
If you went to university, you would develop knowledge and social capital (contacts, attitudes and ways of behaving),
leading to a profession.
Aspiring Jewish parents would often
want their offspring to take the professional route becoming doctors, lawyers
and accountants.
Nowadays, however, these old distinctions between careers and professions, academic degree and workplace training,
have broken down.
While doctors still need university qualifications, there are now non-university
routes such as ILEX, for aspiring lawyers
and training schemes at many accountancy
practices for school leavers at 18.
These arent like the jobs of old. Hidden
behind the curtain, running many of the
critical educational parts of training, are
universities. KPMGs school leaver scheme,
for instance, involves a degree from
Durham, Birmingham or Exeter through
workplace learning and a few weeks each

year on campus. Meanwhile, university

courses have changed too. Their buzzword
is now employability which is that mix of
knowledge and social capital as well as
skills and experience.
In the past 30 years, UK student numbers
have more than tripled and the largest proportion of new places are on vocational
courses, often involving placements and
practical learning that once wouldnt have
been thought of as study.
And theres a host of other options too:
five levels of apprenticeships, to give one
example, some of which are run in partnership with universities and, formally at least,
equivalent to degrees.
So, given the choice of a life burdened
with debt and a reportedly hostile campus
environment for Jewish students or a workbased route to a similar result, why should
we risk university?
The answer is that university remains just
about the best investment you can make.
Campus anti-Semitism is vastly exaggerated and there are J-Socs and progressive
alternatives to support you.
Whats more, the wider student experience three years to find yourself and become a mensch is something that the
direct route into work will always struggle
to match.

Shes 82, not quite five-feet tall

and is one of the most important
and influential Jewish women in
America not to mention an internet icon as well!
Ruth Bader Ginsburg (or the
Notorious RBG as shes known to
legions of fans) is the first Jewish
woman to sit on the United
States Supreme Court.
Shes a trailblazing feminist and
a fierce defender of civil liberties.
At law school in the 1950s, she
and her fellow female students
(nine out of 500) were summoned
by the dean to explain why they
had taken places at Harvard that
could have been filled by men.
Experiences like this didnt put
her off; instead they were the

seeds of a lifelong commitment

to equality.
When appointed to the
Supreme Court, she said: I am
a judge born, raised, and proud
of being a Jew. The demand for
justice runs through the entirety
of the Jewish tradition.
Her Judaism isnt incidental to
her commitment to justice, but
this commitment nearly broke
her relationship with Judaism.
She tells a story of when her
mother died (she was 17):
There was a minyan every day,
and I couldnt be part of it. That
really hurt me.
Experiences like this pushed
her away from Judaism, though
later on in life she has reflected

that had she been exposed to

egalitarian Judaism as a young
woman, the situation might have
been different.
When I think of what it means
to be a Jew who draws on Jewish values to make real change in
the world, Ruth Bader Ginsburg
is the example I come back to
again and again.
Shes female, Jewish and liberal (something she once described as being a triple strike
against her) and is one of the
most prominent voices for justice
in the USA. This makes her my
Jewish hero.

How can I stop

the nightly grind?
Hi Rob,
My husband has noticed I grindi my teeth at night. Is it normal
or should I be worried?
Zoe

Dear Zoe,
Teeth grinding at night is a relatively common habit. It is
thought to be stress related and involves the lower jaw moving around or sometimes clenching.
The problem with grinding (known as bruxism) is that it puts
a lot of pressure on the jaw joint where it meets the skull, a
hinge known as the TMJ.
This can lead to pain and limited opening of the jaw, impacting on eating and sometimes even speech.
At night, when our bodies are meant to rest, constant movement can fatigue the muscles and build up lactic acid similar
to what happens in cramp.
This can cause headaches and neck aches. Wearing of the
teeth against each other can also cause problems such as
chipping teeth, or sensitivity if the enamel wears thin.
The first place to start is to have a simple night-guard made
by a dentist. This will protect the teeth, release pressure on
the muscles and protect the TMJ.
Also, your husband may enjoy a good nights sleep!
Hope that helps.

Going back to work

after maternity leave

AMANDA SHAYLE
ACUPUNCTURE EXPERT

The good news about this is that your employer may be

more receptive to flexible hours and ways of working.
Set up a meeting with your manager as soon as possible and
have a constructive, business-like conversation about how
to meet your work objectives while accommodating your
childcare needs.
Then make sure you have really reliable childcare in place
and backup for emergencies.
Once you are back at work, spend some time observing and
listening to colleagues. Find out what the unspoken rules are
for success and who the movers and shakers are so you can
build an influential and supportive network.
Focus on the job and try not to worry too much about the
children and dont spend too much time talking about
them! Dont aim to be perfect, but do deliver some quick
wins to inspire confidence.
Your time at home will have given you perspective and new
skills, like time-management and negotiation skills. So go
back with a positive, proactive approach and enjoy the new
challenges!

Dear Maxi,
Our mobile provider increased its out-of-bundle charges
last month, just before our summer holiday! My family

Dear Grant,
| share your concern. This could not have happened at a
worse time!
The ideal solution is to find a mobile provider who offers international roaming bundles for minutes and data, or a
provider who offers rental solutions. The good news is that
RCUK offers both.
We have fantastic international bundles which can be added
to our tariffs that will save you a minimum of 80 pecent compared with not adding a bundle.
If it is not possible to move your numbers, then we can offer
a variety of cost-effective rental options for short-term
travel.
Please get in touch with the RCUK Mobile team who would
be more than happy to address your concerns and offer a
cost-effective way to travel.

Puy lentil and squash salad

PREPARATION TIME
10 MINS

This is a tasty and colourful combination

that is perfect all year round. Omit the
cheese for a vegan option, or to serve as
part of a meaty buffet.
Puy lentils are especially good in salads
as they remain firm after cooking and have
a rich flavour.
They do not need to be soaked
overnight, but if you do it will decrease the
cooking time.

Serves

COOKING TIME
30 MINUTES

.
Method

1 Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 4. Toss

the butternut squash with 1 tbsp olive oil,
garlic clove, thyme leaves and seasoning.
Roast for 25 to 30 mins or until tender.

2 Mix together the balsamic vinegar, tbsp

olive oil, the wholegrain mustard and 1 to 2
tbsp water. Drain the Puy lentils in water
and toss with the dressing, red onion,
spinach and cherry tomatoes.

3 Divide the lentils between four plates.

Top with the squash, then crumble over
Cheshire cheese and pumpkin seeds.

CATS BOSS SETS

SIGHTS ON TITLE

The first of three previews on the new Jewish football season

looks at those hoping to challenge for top spot in Division 2

Real Hendon & NL

Raiders C will go head to
head again (main), new
Fortune manager Simon
Linden (top), Catfords
Joel Lassman (above)

CATFORD & BROMLEY playermanager Jeff Gotch insists his

side are going for top spot in Division Two. He said: Nothing else
will do. Weve a mix of youth and
experience and will be looking to
take our games to the opposition
from the start. Weve signed
seven new players who have a
wealth of Premier Division experience and theyll each bring that
and class to the team.
LEquipe manager Nicholas
Stern is hoping the club can celebrate their tenth anniversary by
being crowned champions. He said
Our aims are the league title.
Weve made some fantastic signings and with this being our tenth
year, its time we added some silverware to the cabinet.
Claiming the sides togetherness
can help them achieve their aims,
he said: You wont find a tighter
knitted group than our one, we all
put our bodies on the line for each
other week in week out.
North London Raiders Cs jointmanager David Domb hopes to see
his side finish in a promotion place.
He said: Therell be 12 teams in
this division who'll be eyeing a
place in the top two, so we know it'll
once again be a difficult division to
get out of. We just missed out last
term, but we certainly aim to be
near the top pushing for promotion
once again.

Real Hendon finished last season in fourth, and this time round,
joint-manager Motty Korman will
be happy with top-five. He said:
Thats what were aiming for, with
several new young teams in the division, we know that will be tough,
but that's what we are aiming for.
Temple Fortune have brought in
former Blizzard Storm boss Simon
Linden as their new manager, and
club chairman Nigel Kyte says:
After enduring three difficult seasons in a row, we are hoping for a
much improved campaign. A finish
in the top half of the division would
be a welcome start, a promotion
challenge a real bonus. But realistically, with several new teams joining, its hard to assess how well we
will do so we will see.
One of four new teams entering
the League is RC UK FC, and their
chairman and captain Jake Lewis
has only one target. Our aims for
this season are very clear, he says,
the minimum is to win the title and
have a good cup run.
Saying how preparations have
been steady, he says: Weve
had mixed results, but for a new
side, it was all about gaining fitness
and gelling as a team. The spine of
our team, especially our midfield is
very strong and weve proven very
hard to break down in pre-season.
Mill Hill Dons manager Brandon
Hamme says hes looking for his side

to challenge for promotion. He says:

It's hard to judge ourselves against
the other teams in the league at the
moment, but I believe we have a
strong squad which should be able
to challenge. Saying pre-season
preparations have gone well, he
adds: I feel our main strength is our
midfield, weve many different top
quality options to choose from,
which is bound to cause me some
selection headaches.
Jack Shulman says the aim of
Hertswood Vale is to be competitive. The joint-manager said:
There are a number of teams in
the league who have been playing
together a long time, but we are
going to work hard and are looking
at a top-four finish, asserting ourselves this season and building
upon that from here.
Despite picking up a number of
injuries in pre-season, he said: The
team is starting to build some connections and its beginning to show
in our friendlies. Its been a solid
start and were confident in what
were doing. Saying the clubs
strengths are its focus, vision and
energy, he adds our big names are
Elio Elia, so good they pretty much
named him twice and Josh Gorb,
who has an unbelievable left foot.
Faithfold B, FC Team B, North London
Rangers and Redbridge C complete the
line-up

Olympic gymnasts lose their rhythm in final

ISRAELS LAST medal hopes for the
Olympic Games the rhythmic gymnastics
team finished the Group All-Around final
in sixth place.
One of the youngest competing teams,
Yuval Filo, Alona Koshevatskiy, Ekaterina Levina, Karina Lykhvar and Ida Mayrin were all
under 19-years-old, their
head coach Ira Vigdorchik
conceded media reports
concerning alegations she
reportedly kicked Levina
during training didnt help
the teams preparations.
She said: It really affected
us, but we did our best, we
rose from the ashes. Its impossible to explain how
problematic the past six
weeks were.
But delighted with their
performance, she said: Im
very pleased because simply reaching the final was

very difficult. They reached the final and finished in sixth place, among the best teams in
the world.
Team captain Koshevatskiy, who carried the
Israel flag in Sunday nights closing ceremony,
said: I have no words to explain what we experienced here, we will never forget this experience. Im proud of everything
we achieved on our way to the
Olympics and especially here in
Rio. Im proud to represent Israel.
Neta Rivkin missed out on
reaching the individual allaround competition final, falling
just 0.759 points short of a topten finish in the qualifiers. She
said: I gave my all, but things
didnt work out for me. The
mistakes cost me a place in the
final.
Israels first golfer at the
Games, Laetitia Beck, finished
the womens competition in

joint-31st place at two over-par. The 24-yearold said: Im never pleased with how I play so
Im a little disappointed with the final result. Im
happy I had the opportunity to compete at the
Olympics and Im sure Ill do better in Tokyo
2020.
Israels first triathlete Ron Darmon finished
the race in 26th place, in a time of 1:48:41. He
said: It was amazing to have so much support
in and out of the course, Im happy I gave 100
percent and with my 26th place finish.
Three marathon runners all completed Sundays gruelling race. Of the 155 who took part,
Marhu Teferi, the national half-marathon
champion, was the fastest of the trio, finishing
in 74th place, in a time of 2:21:06, 12.22 behind
the winner. Tesama Moogas, in just his second
competitive marathon, finished in 121st place,
in a time of 2:30:30, with Ageze Guadie finished in 122nd place, in a time of 2:30:45.
Israels last competitor at the Games was
Shlomi Haimy. The 27-year-old, the countrys
first representative in an Olympic mountain
biking competition, finished in 29th place.

THE 30m MISS!

Botched penalty against Celtic costs
Beer Sheva Champions League fortune

Picture: SNS Group

BY ANDREW

SHERWOOD
ISRAELI CHAMPIONS Hapoel Beer
Sheva were left counting the cost of
a missed penalty as they fell one goal
short of reaching the lucrative group
stage of this seasons Champions
League worth an estimated 30m.
Going into Tuesday evenings second
leg of their play-off tie against Celtic,
trailing from a 5-2 loss in Glasgow last
week, the Israelis needed to win by a
three-goal margin to book their place in
this seasons tournament though fell
agonsingly short after Maharan Radi saw
his spot kick saved by Craig Gordon.
Former Chelsea striker Ben Sahar did
find the back of the net in the 21st
minute, while Ovidiu Hoban capitalised
on a defensive error from Celtic defender Saidy Janko and Gordon to double their advantage. But despite
creating several late chances, they
couldnt find the vital third goal.
Despite the defeat, Beer Sheva manager Barak Bakhar was delighted with his
sides performance. He said: The players
gave 200 percent tonight, its very disappointing because we were very close,
however we are very proud and were
close to doing something sensational.
We have played three teams in playoff ties and showed how excellent we
are against a strong team. Now we wait
for the Europa League draw and see
who we will face in that competition.

Maharan Radi sees his penalty saved by Celtic goalkeeper Craig Gordon

Israeli Olympic boss hails

countrys Rio medal haul
THE SECRETARY of the Olympic Committee of Israel has said the Games were a
success for the country.
Having failed to win a single medal in
London four years ago, Gili Lustig (pictured) says Israels two bronze wins in judo
in Rio means the Games can be labelled a
success. He said: First and foremost we
wanted to return with a medal, especially
after what happened in London. After the
disappointment from four years ago, the
people of Israel were expecting a medal
and I think these Olympics can be branded
as a success.
He did though also express disappointment, with their athletes only reaching five
finals half the amount the OCI were hoping for. He said: The one goal we didnt
meet was finals. We expected to reach
more and had some good candidates in
Golan Pollack, Gili Cohen, Alex Shatilov,

Sergey Richter, Yakov Toumarkin, Shahar

Zubari and Ilana Kratysh. We expected
more from them, but clearly I would have
been happy to settle for our results in Rio
prior to the Olympics.
Happy with the size of the squad and the
performance of the female athletes, he
said: The fact we had a record 47 athletes
in 17 different sports is also an
achievement in itself.
We also had a female athlete
on the podium for the first time
since 1992 and a superb performance by Hanna KnyazyevaMinenko, who ended the triple
jump final in fifth place, the bestever finish for an Israeli
woman in athletics,
since 1976.
Apart
from
Knyazyeva-Mi-

nenko, we had four other Israelis reach a

final or its equivalent of a top eight finish in
the judo events. Windsurfer Maayan Davidovich came tantalisingly close to winning
a medal, and there was a good performance from the rhythmic gymnastics national
team.
Israeli athletes were also caught up in
controversy, when the Lebanese delegation
refused to share a bus with them to take
them to the opening ceremony, while an
Egyptian judoka, Islam El Shehaby, refused to shake Or Sassons hand. Lustig
said: The incident at the opening ceremony was blown out of proportion and
was over within five minutes.
We are guided by certain values and if others want to act
in a different manner that is
their problem. We are
proud to be Israelis.
