Fire Prevention
The machine and attachments have components that are
at high temperature under normal operating conditions.
The primary source of high temperatures is the engine
and exhaust system. The electrical system, if damaged
or incorrectly maintained, can be a source of arcs or
sparks.

Hydraulic fluid escaping under pressure can have
sufficient force to enter a persons body by
penetrating the skin. This can cause serious injury
and possible death if proper medical treatment by a
physician familiar with this injury is not received
immediately.

IMPORTANT
When repairing hydrostatic and hydraulic systems,
clean the work area before disassembly and keep all
parts clean. Always use caps and plugs on hoses,
tubelines and ports to keep dirt out. Dirt can quickly
damage the system.

IMPORTANT
When repairing hydrostatic and hydraulic systems,
clean the work area before disassembly and keep all
parts clean. Always use caps and plugs on hoses,
tubelines and ports to keep dirt out. Dirt can quickly
damage the system.

IMPORTANT
When repairing hydrostatic and hydraulic systems,
clean the work area before disassembly and keep all
parts clean. Always use caps and plugs on hoses,
tubelines and ports to keep dirt out. Dirt can quickly
damage the system.

Figure 60-30-2
WARNING
Never work on a machine with the lift arms up unless
the lift arms are secured by an approved lift arm
support device. Failure to use an approved lift arm
support device can allow the lift arms or attachment
to fall and cause injury or death.
W-2059-0598
Raise the lift arms and install the approved lift arm
support device. (See Installing The Approved Lift Arm
Support Device on Page 10-20-1.)
Stop the engine and engage the parking brake.
Remove the side cover from the left side.
P-47622
Move the alternator until the belt has 5/16 inch (8,0 mm)
movement at the middle of the belt span with 15 lbs. (66
N) of force [Figure 60-30-2].
Tighten the adjustment and mounting bolts (Item 1)

Tests
Perform the following alternator tests in this order:
Alternator Output Test: Tests the alternator and regulator
output.
P-35308
WARNING
When an engine is running in an enclosed area, fresh
air must be added to avoid concentration of exhaust
fumes. If the engine is stationary, vent the exhaust
outside. Exhaust fumes contain odorless, invisible
gases which can kill without warning.
W-2050-1285
With the parking brake engaged, start the engine and run
at full RPM.
The ammeter reading should be between 35 and 40
amps.
If the ammeter reading is less than 35 amps do the full
field test.
P-35305

ALTERNATOR (CONTD)

P-35681
Turn the lights on (if equipped) and crank the engine for
30 seconds to discharge the battery.
Place a small screw driver in the test port (Item 1)
[Figure 60-30-6] to provide a ground to the alternator
case. This will give maximum amperage output from the
alternator.
NOTE: The Full Field Test should only last long
enough to get ammeter reading to prevent
damage to the alternator.
The ammeter reading should be above 35 amps.
WARNING
When an engine is running in an enclosed area, fresh
air must be added to avoid concentration of exhaust
fumes. If the engine is stationary, vent the exhaust
outside. Exhaust fumes contain odorless, invisible
gases which can kill without warning.

SPEC 10-1
This chart shows the backhoe lifting capacity with the load applied at the bucket hinge pin and the machine equipped
as outlined below.
These figures are actual measured values, stated in pounds, and rated to SAE J31 (MAR86) standards. Stability
limited values are indicated with an asterisk (*) and are shown in light-face type. All values shown with bold-face
characters are hydraulically limited.
These values are based on a machine equipped as follows: 63 Loader Bucket (6962363) 16 Backhoe Bucket
(6715501) 55 psi (379 kPa) Tire Pressure.
Figures above the line are capacities over end. Figures below the line are capacities through the swing arc, with the
swing frame fully side-shifted.
Large arc shows boom lift capacity with dipper fully extended. Small arc shows dipper lift capacity with boom fully
raised.

WARNING
Diesel fuel or hydraulic fluid under pressure can
penetrate skin or eyes, causing serious injury or
death. Fluid leaks under pressure may not be visible.
Use a piece of cardboard or wood to find leaks. Do
not use your bare hand. Wear safety goggles. If fluid
enters skin or eyes, get immediate medical attention
from a physician familiar with this injury.
W-2072-0496
When temperatures below zero degree F (-18C) are common, the loader must be kept in a warm building. Extra warmup time must be used each time the loader is started during cold temperature conditions. Cold fluid will not flow easily and
it makes action of the hydraulic function slower. Loss of fluid flow to the hydrostatic transmission pump (indicated by
TRANS light ON) can cause transmission damage in less than 60 seconds.
WARNING
During cold weather (32F [0C] and below), do not
operate machine until the engine has run for at least
five minutes at less than half throttle. This warm-up
period is necessary for foot pedal operation and safe
stopping. Do not operate controls during warm-up
period.
When temperatures are below -20F (-30C), the
hydrostatic oil must be heated or kept warm. The
hydrostatic system will not get enough oil at low
temperatures. Park the machine in an area where the
temperature will be above 0F (-18C) if possible.
