FORMAL GEOMETRY

CLASS EXPECTATIONS & SYLLABUS

MR. MAY

Welcome to an exciting and useful course in mathematics. The following are suggestions and
rules that will help you to be successful in this class.
Words of Wisdom: As you embark on this honors level math class, you must understand that this course is intended to
prepare you for college level courses. To be successful in this course, you must do every homework assignment, respond to
every blog post, complete every project and come in for help. Students often struggle in this course when they miss a single
day. Therefore, schedule doctor appointments and family vacations around school time if possible. This class is intense and
rigorous. It will demand a lot of your time. If you do this, you will be success in this course and you will be prepared for college
level courses next year, including AP courses. I am here to help you succeed, so please come in for help.

ACADEMIC GRADE
GRADING SCALE:
A = 89.5% to 100% of total points
B = 79.5% to 89.4% of total points
C = 69.5% to 79.4% of total points
D = 59.5% to 69.4% of total points
F = 0% to 59.4% of total points

Grades are based on an accumulation of points.

Your grade will be determined by the following:

Assignments (20%) Assignments include classwork, homework, individual projects, group
projects, the Constructions Scrapbook, and Notebook checks. Assignments must be labeled
correctly with your name, period, date, and the page number with the problem numbers.
Quizzes (10%) Quizzes will be given regularly throughout each unit. Only content that the
student is expected to know will be quizzed. New material is rarely quizzed. This assessment is
for you to see how much of the content you truly understand. Please review the necessary
content before and after each quiz. The best way to study for the quizzes is to keep on top of
your homework.
Formative Assessments (50 %) Chapter tests are given at the conclusion of each chapter.
All work must be shown and pencils must be used. One retest will be given per semester. The
retest will be given for the lowest test score in the grade book. The re-tested scores will replace
the old score so long as the new score is higher than the old score. A free response assessment
will also be given for each chapter.
District Wide Common Final Exam (15%) Given at the conclusion of each semester. Please
note that 15% is a large percentage of the grade!! Keep your notes and review often.
Free Response Final Exam (5%)- Given at the conclusion of each semester.
*All students are required to take the semester final exam.

ATTENDANCE & TARDY POLICY

Attend class each day. Please refer to the attendance portion of the student handbook for more information.
School rules will be enforced.
Be in your assigned seat when the tardy bell rings. You are tardy if you are not in your assigned seat when the
bell rings.
If you are absent for any reason it is your responsibility to make up the work you missed. Please check with
the Homework Calendar if you missed a day. You will have only the number of days you missed you make up
your assignment(s).

MISSED WORK AND EXTRA HELP

Work missed due to any absence should be made up as soon as possible. A test missed will be made up the
next class period if it is an excused absence. You will have only the number of days you missed to make up
the assignment(s). After that, it becomes late work.
Late work is any assignment completed after the day it is graded. Should a student choose to turn in an
assignment late, he or she will sacrifice 30% of the homework score. Assignments turned in after the chapter
test will not be accepted. Please note: classwork is to be completed and turned in by the end of that class
unless otherwise stated.
I will be available for extra help before school, at lunch and by appointment afterschool. Have specific
questions in mind when coming to me for help. Also, NVHS offers daily lunchtime tutoring at lunch in the
Career Center with an accredited math teacher.
