COMBAT AGAINST CLIMATE CHANGE INTENSIFIED IN SCHOOLS

or
R.A. 9003 STEPPED- UP VIA IEC CAMPAIGN IN SCHOOLS

I will be a model to my fellow student by applying what I have learned today like
doing proper segregation of waste and abide the concept of reuse, reduce, recycle so that
they can realize how valuable this is not only to our school but also to our environment.
These were the encouraging words of a Grade 9 student when asked how they can
help mitigate the massive environmental changes by being a student. The question was raised
during the conduct of Symposium on R.A 9003 and Climate Change on August 5, 2016 at
Sanchez Mira National High School (SMNHS).
The said symposium was realized to drumbeat awareness from students on the
importance of ecological solid waste management as well as to promote appropriate measures
not just within the school premises but also within their own homes.
To intensify the campaign, the school organized a competition among studentry to
create an artwork through a poster, collage and slogan evolving to the theme Kapaligiran
Ko, Aalagaan Ko. Each contested piece was assessed according to the criteria set for every
category by invited evaluators in the person of Forest Technician I Krushiva Tristanne Jan A.
Reslin and Administrative Aides VI Christine Joy A. Parada and Melaine C. Eco who at the
time were also the Resource Speakers.
Each invited presenter elaborated on Republic Act 9003 which is also known as the
Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000 including Climate Change in relevance to
the said Act. An audio visual presentation featuring various wildlife species found only in the
country was also showed in addition to the two presentations. How Biodiversity contributes
to the major needs of humans were featured in the video as well as the threats in biodiversity.
Attended by pumped up students from Grades 7 through 11 including the
administrators and staffs, the gymnasium was filled with excitement as incentives in the form
of school supplies were distributed during the Question and Answer portion. Winners in the
Poster, Collage and Slogan Making Contest were also revealed at the end of the endeavor.
We have learned a lot of things today. We should be grateful to ourselves. Share
what you have learned to your family, neighbors, friends and to everyone to make our
school, barangay, municipality, country and the whole world a better place to live in. said
Principal I Ronald P. Gapusan of SMNHS optimistic on the impact of the activity to the
students. #cjp/mce
