PREZI/PODCAST LESSONS

1
Needs Assessment

Cultural awareness is an important topic within classes to allow students to gain better
understanding of peoples differences, similarity, gaining respect for others. Through learning
about the Aboriginal culture observing then creating art students will gain a better understanding.
Students will explore the culture using technology within their art lessons, allowing students to
hone on skills needed to be 21st century learners. Students will incorporate both research skills
and digital citizenship skills to demonstrate their abilities using a web curriculum that is student
center learning. This paper looks at two lessons using a Podcast and Prezi presentation.
Students will use the Podcast in lesson one as an overview to the Web 2.0 web
curriculum on Aboriginal Culture and Art. This will give the students an understanding of how to
navigate the web curriculum to successfully complete lessons. For this lesson a formative
assessment through observation and whole class question and answer will be used.
Students will use a Prezi presentation in lesson four to make a connection between using
symbols in our culture. Though we may use symbols in different context, we also use symbols in
our everyday life. This lesson will conclude with students creating symbol sentences and sharing
with class. This lesson will also incorporate an informal assessment, understanding symbols used
in identifying concepts used in the world around us.

Kemp Model of Instructional Design

PREZI/PODCAST LESSONS

Instructional Problems: Using the Vodcast students will gain knowledge using and
navigating a web curriculum. The Prezi presentation will be used to identify symbols used in
everyday life. Students will gain a cultural awareness of how two different cultures use symbols
to obtain information either through signs or storytelling.
Learners Characteristics: Classes are diversely mixed with different learning styles/
abilities. Students will work as independently as possible, after initial observations students will
be paired as needed throughout lessons.
Task Analysis:

Students will be able to display digital citizenship exhibiting positive attitudes

while understanding and using technology systems.

Students will make connections to real world context with symbolizes through a
Prezi presentation.

Instructional Objective:

Students will use terminology related to the arts.

Students will be able to brainstorm symbols to use to create sentences.

Students will convey message and retell stories using symbolizes.

Content Sequencing:
Lesson One:
1. On Smart Board introduce students to Aboriginal art through a presentation. This
presentation will have five different works of art. Each painting students can describe the
elements of arts and principles, then make a hypothesis of the story being portrayed. (15
minutes)

PREZI/PODCAST LESSONS

2. Students will review the Vodcast on how to navigate the Web2.0. (5 minutes)
3. Students will independently work on the computer or I-Pad. Students will explore Web
2.0 reviewing upcoming lessons. (5 minutes)
4. Students will ask questions related to Web 2.0 and lessons. (10minutes)
Lesson 4:
1. On Smart Board using a Prezi Presentation, students identify symbols related to
everyday life. (5minutes)
2. Students will brainstorm as a class to create their own symbols. (10minutes)
3. Students will create short stories (minimum of two sentences), with symbols created.
Peers will then interrupt stories. Writer will then retell story as they have written it. (20 minutes)
Instructional Strategies:
Objective 1: Students will gain an understanding of sequencing the lessons of the web
curriculum.
Strategy: After viewing Podcast of web curriculum students will independently
explore the web curriculum for better understanding of use.
Objective 2: Identify symbols used in our culture for instruction or direction.
Strategy: Whole class presentation of Prezi Everyday Symbols identifying images,
then brain storming to create new symbols to use in sentences.
Objective 3: Using symbols to create sentences.
Strategy: Independent practice writing minimum of two sentences using only
symbols.
Objective 4: Communicate meaning of sentences created

PREZI/PODCAST LESSONS

Strategy: Whole class discussion, having students display their sentences on smart
board, while other students interrupt sentences. The author will confirm or deny interpretation.
Designing the Message/Instructional Delivery:
Evaluation Instruments: For lessons one and four a formative assessment will occur
looking at student understanding and use of computer and symbols. The overall web curriculum
will have a rubric for student self-assessment and teacher evaluation.
Support Services: Through observations teacher will assess needs of students, first
intervention will be peer support, followed by teacher support. All IEP goals will be meet.
Project Management:
Planning: Reverse use of COW (computers on wheels) for continuum of project.
Revising: If internet connection fails all information will be save to a file on desk top/
USB, which can be viewed on Smart Board.
Evaluation:
Formative: Will be informal in this lesson as art terminology should be back ground
knowledge needing review, computer skills need to be assessed as students are engage.
Summative: Will be formal using a rubric on the whole web curriculum.
Management: Time management is essential keeping students on track as computers will
be reversed for this lesson

Designing the
Message:

Story telling is done through many forms, text, communication,

dance, and artwork. These stories have a meaning behind them, to
teach us a lesson, tell us history, or maybe show us a way someone
traveled. Many cultures have different ways of telling their story.
This lesson will show us how the Aborginial culture tells their stories
through their paintings, which they also call Dot Paintings. They use
a combination of dots, colors, and repeation to tell their stories of
history, lessons, and cultural history, which they call Dreaming.

Students have explored symbols that the Aboriginal people use to tell
stories of everyday life. In our culture we also have symbols that we use
to either tell us stories, follow direction (Keys), or to tell us what
something might be. Today we will look at different symbols that we
could see in our daily life.
