METHOD STATEMENT

FOR
ANTICORROSIVE LAYER OF
FIRE WATER TANK
FOUNDATION

1.0) SCOPE
This method statement seeks to describe the technical requirement
for materials and procedures for providing anti-corrosive layer for
the Fire Water Tank foundation of the Brass Fire Fighting Revamping
Project (BFFRP).
2.0) MATERIALS
2.1) BITUMEN
Bitumen required shall be 80/100 grade (fluxed with kerosene)
2.2) SAND
Sand shall be clean, dry, free from clay and dust, vegetation and
organic matter and shall conform to properties given in table 2 of
BS 882, 1201: Part 2: 1973.
2.3) CEMENT
Cement required shall be Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC)
3.0) MIX RATIO
Total volume of anticorrosive layer (100mm) 53.09m 3
Bitumen 9% - 4.78m3 (12.43 tons)
Cement 10% - 5.31m3 (3.55 tons)
Sand 81% - 43m3 (68.8 tons)
4.0) MIXING PROCEDURES
Sand to be used shall be dried by manually heating it to make it
free from moisture which could hamper proper Sand-Bitumen
coercion. The Bitumen shall be heated to a temperature between
170 - 1900C in a drum manually heated by gas burner. The bitumen
shall then be scooped into another mixing drum/tray and mixed
thoroughly with sand and cement using special metal spatula and
laid immediately. The area of the foundation to be laid shall be
cleaned free of dust and loose material. A tack coat of hot bitumen
shall be applied on the foundation pad to act as a primer. The sandbitumen mixture shall be laid on the primed foundation pad to a
height of about 100mm (an allowable depression of 50mm is
assumed to allow for a final layer height of 50mm after Tank

settlement). The Sand-Bitumen mixture shall be laid in stages till

the entire foundation pad is covered.
