INTRODUCTION
What is Information?
The term information technology was coined by the Harvard Business Review,
in order to make a distinction between purpose-built machines designed to
perform a limited scope of functions and general-purpose computing
machines that could be programmed for various tasks. As the IT industry
evolved from the mid-20th century, it encompassed transistors and integrated
circuits -- computing capability advanced while device cost and energy
consumption fell lower, a cycle that continues today when new technologies
emerge. Information technology (IT) is the use of any computers, storage,
networking and other physical devices, infrastructure and processes to create,
process, store, secure and exchange all forms of electronic data.

What is Technology?
Technology is the collection of techniques, methods or processes used in
the production of goods or services or in the accomplishment of objectives,
such as scientific investigation. Technology can be the knowledge of

techniques, processes, etc. or it can be embedded in machines,

computers, devices and factories, which can be operated by individuals
without detailed knowledge of the workings of such things.

What is Information Technology?

Information technology (IT) is the application
of computers and telecommunications equipment to store, retrieve, transmit
and manipulate data, often in the context of a business or other enterprise.
The term is commonly used as a synonym for computers and computer
networks, but it also encompasses other information distribution
technologies such as television and telephones. Several industries are
associated with information technology, including computer
hardware, software, electronics, semiconductors, internet, telecom
equipment, engineering, healthcare, e-commerce and computer services.

Who are IT Managers?

IT managers have a lot in common with project managers but their main
difference is one of focus: an IT manager is responsible and accountable
for an ongoing program of IT services while the project manager's
responsibility and accountability are both limited to a project with a clear
start and end date.
For example, an IT manager would likely be involved in any discussions
about updating the internal servers and computer work stations. There is a

good chance that the manager would also work with other personnel in the
selection of software, such as accounting programs or some type of sales
and customer database.

ROLE OF MANAGERS WITH REFERENCE TO IT

An IT manager, also known as an information technology manager,
typically plays many roles within an organization or company. In fact,
everyday IT manager responsibilities can vary greatly, depending on the
size and structure of the company. Managerial tasks often extend beyond
merely supervising the development, maintenance, and security of
computer and information n
etwork systems as well. In addition, many people working in this field
perform duties that create an opportunity to specialize in a specific field of
information technology.

From an operational standpoint, the majority of IT manager

responsibilities involve testing the integrity and performance of
various information networks and software applications. Of course,
since technology tends to evolve rather quickly, the IT manager must
also periodically review and evaluate how current systems and
applications are meeting the needs of the company or organization.
This means that a successful IT manager should be able to identify
and implement new technologies to enhance the long-term
operational and strategic goals of the company.

For a growing number of IT managers, the position also

includes business planning, particularly in terms of defining the
Internet presence of a company or organization. Depending on the
mission of the employer, the nature of IT manager responsibilities
may range from encrypting and tracking information collected from
consumers visiting the site to developing and monitoring online
community tools, such as message boards, feedback forms, surveys,
etc. IT managers also typically oversee the upgrading and installation
of system-related software and hardware related to Internet and
intranet sites.
IT manager responsibilities are not limited to machines, however. In
fact, IT managers typically supervise and direct the workflow of
various teams of people. For instance, many IT managers assign and
prioritize tasks to be performed by system analysts, computer
programmers, developers, and other support staff. Many managers
also serve as consultants to executive level officers when it comes to
developing and applying information technology policy and standards.
In addition, whenever adverse technical issues are experienced
within the company, the IT department typically serves as the
internal help desk to field questions and troubleshoot problems.

In large companies, there may be more than one IT manager; each

filling a specialized role. For instance, some may primarily act as
project managers, developing budgets and coordinating the roll out of
new projects and ventures. This type of manager typically has a good
deal of contact with outside clients and third party vendors. Other
areas of specialization in IT management include software
development, quality control, security, and knowledge assurance and
training of internal personnel.

Maintains computer hardware and software applications through the

use of service contractors for the
purpose of ensuring availability of instructional materials and district
operations.
Monitors fund balances of assigned programs and related financial
activity for the purpose of ensuring that
allocations are accurate, related revenues are generated, expenses
are within budget limits and/or fiscal
practices are followed.
Participates in meetings, workshops and seminars for the purpose of
conveying and/or gathering information
required to perform functions.
Performs personnel functions (e.g. interviewing, evaluating,
supervising, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining
adequate staffing, enhancing productivity of personnel and achieving
objectives within budget.

Case study: Performance Testing Framework

for Leading Online Money Transfer Services
Company
When an American Fortune 500 online money transfer player needed
large scale performance and complex SOA services testing solutions,
they turned to Infinite Computer Solutions proven expertise in the
Banking and Finance domain.

The Customer
The client is a leading fortune 500 company established in Online
Money Transfer and Payment Services. With operations in more than
180 countries, the IT systems support 124 languages with a legacy
mainframe and an SOA based system.

Challenge
When it came to ongoing system upgrades, the client team did not have
a robust release environment. Due to inadequate testing, there were a
huge number of defects moving into production environment, impacting
the clients business objectives. The pre-production staging
environment did not have the capability to allow testing with real time
load scenarios.

Problem or Opportunity

The client needed to create a robust staging environment with a quick

on-boarding of a team of 70 QA members with a blend of offshore and
onshore within a short time period of 8 weeks. This included a
Knowledge Transfer and Shadow Phase within 6 weeks without any
disruption of the existing business.

There needed to be optimization and consolidation of services with

increased productivity and knowledge within 6 months after steady
state was achieved.

The team needed to perform end-to-end UI, Web Services,

Governance, Security, Orchestration and Performance testing
seamlessly with 30% of all the QA tasks being automated within a year
of service.

There were no available benchmarks that the performance testing

could be measured against.

There were multiple systems to test with very minimal documentation,

owing to the involvement of multiple vendors. The client teams were
working from 6 different locations and in different time zones, making
coordination a tough task.

Solution

Drawing on the deep domain expertise in the Banking and Finance

area, the Infinite Team drew on best practices in software testing to
deliver a solution that delivered sustained business value while
ensuring critical functions remained unaffected.

Using QTP & Parasoft SOAtest, Infinite created an automated suite of

test scripts that provided a base for repeatable and improvable testing
practices. The team created and maintained highly re-usable and
easily maintainable automation test scripts for each release.

A risk-based testing approach was adopted for regression which

covered all business critical requirements.

The resources were trained across multiple modules, improving team

staff utilization and productivity. This was further enhanced by the
introduction of automation using tools and frameworks.

The team also proactively worked with the client to come up with a
set of benchmarks that helped the team measure and constantly
improve results delivered by its testing services.

Outcome

The suite of testing services brought down effort by 45% within a year
of operations. This was achieved by automating 85% of all business
scenarios.

The testing processes were standardized and the metrics are reused
across projects to monitor the health of the program.

Risk based/TMAP testing strategy can be adopted for any future

projects.
