Comments Report

4. Please comment on the following items...

4.1)

What are the major strengths and weaknesses of the instructor?

Discussion and critical thinking.
I was amazed at,
* managed the time we needed to complete the things we needed to get done on class nights
* the richness of our discussions. Dr. Berry set a tone for the course that encouraged all of us to participate in an honest, but never
confrontational way.
Last time we met, Dr. Berry asked us a question that none of us were able to respond to. I felt like he was unprepared about how to
proceed at that moment. It was a difficult question asking us to make a distinction between the philosophy and the structure (if I remember
right) concerning an educational issue. I retrospect I can probably answer it now but it has also occurred to me that some class
discussions might have even been richer had we known in advance how generally we would be discussing assigned readings.
The instructor is passionate about the topics at hand. Additionally, he is very knowledgeable about the topics and shared his wealth of
knowledge in well organized discussions!
The instructor's strong background in educational policy issues regarding race and equity ground the course in real policy concerns.
strength - facilitation of student discussion

4.2)

What aspects of this course were most beneficial to you?

1) Learning and discussing topics of educational policy.
2) The assigned readings. The books, especially Fowler, is a dense read but very enlightening.
3) The assigned writings. Through the reading of the policy research, and the writing afterward, I feel like I have progressed a little closer
to the reading, writing, and research skills I need to complete a dissertation.
1. Hearing my colleagues' experiences and points of view; 2. studying the Fowler textbook (excellent resource, 5 stars); and 3. delving into
research and writing for the three CAP papers and final policy paper.
Overall, this was an excellent course. Just as important to the knowledge gained, I believe the instructor's openness helped our new cohort
form a bond that will only grow stronger.
Class discussions and presentations by students provided information on a broad range of policy issues
Class discussions, as well as, questions posed by professor and classmates.
How think critically and how to work hard on achieving my degree with research.

4.3)

What would you suggest to improve this course?

Additional guest speakers who are involved in the policy development and implementation process on multiple levels; legislative, public
school systems, higher ed systems. Having a former lobbyist provided insight into that perspective; very interesting and would've liked to
hear more.
I think I answered that in 4.1
I would like to have had more time to discuss the content with colleagues, since they offer a breadth of experience and knowledge to
share, and discussions can be enlightening. I did not gain much from the poster activities, so I would suggest that they be reconsidered.

4.4)

Comment on the grading procedures and exams.

I appreciated the detailed instructions for writing and structuring the papers. The expectations were clear.
I think the grading is fair, this being a doctoral program after all. What I am expecting is ruthless critique of my written work.
