Facts, Commemoration and Historians: A historiographic Review

RESUMO
O presente artigo faz uma reflexo sobre o
sentido das comemoraes dos 500 anos
de chegada dos portugueses no Brasil, em
2000. Naquele oportunidade, fiz uma
conferncia em Santa Maria, pela
Universidade Federal de Santa Maria, sobre
fatos, comemoraes e historiadores: uma
reviso historiogrfica. No vou produzir
um texto muito diferente da conferncia
que, no seu contedo e estrutura, do que
pronunciei como Aula Inaugural do
Instituto de Filosofia e Cincias Humanas
da Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do
Sul em abril de 1999, dando incio s
atividades programadas pela Comisso
Brasil 500 anos UFRGS. Esta Aula est
na raiz do convite que estou atendendo, no
Congresso Internacional Terra Brasil 500,
na UFSM. O ttulo da conferncia que me
foi solicitada muito amplo e ele,
especificamente no est referenciado ao
fato que o motivo do Congresso: o
descobrimento do Brasil. Entendendo que
isto est subjacente, o que vou fazer so
algumas observaes de natureza
historiogrfica sobre o que chamado de
descobrimento do Brasil. Talvez seja repetir
o que neste Congresso j foi dito e,
certamente, no mencionar/comentar o
que a comemorao vem ensejando em
termos de produo do conhecimento
histrico entre 1999 e 2000.

ABSTRACT
The present article makes a reflection on the
direction of the commemorations of the 500
years of fond of the Portuguese in Brazil, in
2000. In that chance, I made one discusses in
Saint Maria, for the Federal University of
Saint Maria, on facts, commemorations and
historians: a historiogrfica revision. I do not
go to produce a text very different of the
conference that, in its content and structure,
of that I pronounced as Inaugural Lesson of
the Institute of Philosophy and Sciences
Human beings of the Federal University of
the Rio Grande Do Sul in April of 1999, giving
to beginning to the activities programmed for
the Commission Brazil 500 years - UFRGS.
This Lesson is in the root of the invitation
that I am taking care of, in the International
Congress Land Brazil 500, in the UFSM.
The heading of the conference that me was
requested is very ample and it, is specifically
not referenciado to the fact that is the
reason of the Congress: the discovery of
Brazil. Understanding that this is underlying,
what I go to make are some comments of
historiogrfica nature on what is called
discovery of Brazil. Perhaps either to repeat
what in this Congress already e was said,
certainly, not to mencionar/comentar what
the commemoration comes trying in terms
of production of the historical knowledge
between
1999
and
2000.
