Waterford Kettering Freshmen Support Review

December 7, 2015
This report includes a summary of the interventions and supports that are offered to our students during the 2015-16
school year. These interventions are monitored with student achievement, perception, and behavior data. Much of this
data is available at the culmination of the first semester and this report will be updated accordingly.
The freshmen Watch list is a list of 9th graders who are currently failing one or more classes. The attached spreadsheet
breaks down how we track these students. Currently there are 100 students on this list. Of this list 32 students are
currently failing 3 or more classes. 6 of these students currently have an active IEP and are receiving services from our
Student Support Services Department.
A list of the supports and interventions that are in place at Kettering High School include the following list below. This is
in addition to student conferences and general instructional strategies that are adjusted as a result of data gathered.

Math Lab is a support class that is designed for preteaching and

reteaching critical concepts in Algebra 1. Two teachers currently have
lab classes. All students enrolled in a lab class are concurrently
enrolled in an Algebra 1 class with the same teacher.
This program is designed to bring students up the appropriate reading

level quickly. The first semester had mostly sophomore students. The
Adolescent Reading
second semester will include the majority of freshmen who were
Initiative (AARI)
identified as needing the support.
These classes are taught by a certified teacher and counselor. More

freshmen students will start transition into this class. There is a
stressed focus on the whole student as well as career/college advising
to assist with motivation.
Free tutoring is offered by a certified teacher every Tuesday and

Thursday for two hours after school. Students are required to check
in and follow through with goals that are set.
Upperclassessmen are intentionally paired with struggling freshmen

to assist them with day to day success strategies. These mentors
volunteer and provide daily check-ins. Sometimes students respond
well to their peers than they do with adults.
The LINK Crew Leaders are responsible for checking in with the 9th

graders assigned to them a couple times per month. The students
Referral
who are specifically referred to the LINK Leaders have been identified
as needing more frequent follow up.
Parents received a personal invitation to attend Parent/Teacher

conferences. The letter included their students current grades as well

as ways to engage in an effective partnership with their students
teachers.
These are the letters that are sent in accordance with the Waterford
Attendance Letter

School District Attendance Policy. All letters are logged in the
Student Visits section of MiStar.
Students have been identified to be candidates for AARI and will

participate in QRI screening.
These Success Plans are completed with the student and teacher

through Academic Center. They are then followed up by the AC
mentor teachers.

This section contains some of the data that is used to monitor the success of the programs mentioned above. Our
administrative team has made an intentional focus of building teachers capacities for doing their own data mining. This
includes workshops at staff meetings, video tutorials for Excel, and increased opportunities to monitor student progress.
