Met with Mary Kay Worth and Mr.

Ginestre to begin my 200 hour
internship. After Professor Worth left,
Mr. Ginestre and I discussed how to add
more curriculum pieces into my
internship and make sure I am hitting as
many the ELCC standards as possible.

Professor Worth had several

recommendations on how to make my
proposal stronger. I agree with her that I
need to add more curriculum
components and budget. Mr. Ginestre
and I discussed that I will hold
curriculum days to review State
Assessment data with teachers. In these
sessions I will help teachers with how to
tailor resources and practice to this data
in preparation for state assessments. He
will also be including me on any meetings
regarding budget.
This was an interesting training as many
administrators are nervous about
negotiations with their unions and there
is confusion about how things will be
changing for APPR. So far so much is
unknown it will be interesting to attend
next months session and see if we know
more. There was a lot of discussion about
a transition score and what could be
used for this. Mr. Ginestre and I
discussed with Mr. Kelly when we
returned to district the options. We will
be using the Regents exams for our
transition score. This is a measure I
agree with as it best relates to everyone.

Visited High School Government

Classroom to better understand this

The student service meeting was very

useful. Several students who were not
responding to detentions or classroom
instruction were discussed. Having fresh
perspectives of people not dealing with
these situations daily, gives us new
places to go and things to try.
This was an interesting process to go
through. While Wildcat Weeks is a small
budget compared to the whole school
budget, it has many of the same
components. Ms. Oehlbeck helped me
understand the different codes that
certain items would fall under and where
the funding came from for each record.
This record was then sent to the town as
we plan to partner with them for the
upcoming summer program.

I got to start doing discipline today. Mr.

Ginestre and I reviewed what the
students had done. We discussed how to
best handle it. I actually really enjoyed
this. I miss interacting with the students.
I was nice and respectful. They were to
me as well. They were honest and got less
of a consequence due to this honesty. I
also looked at their grades and past
transgressions to make a decision. This
was Mr. Ginestres idea and it was
definitely helpful.
Our High School Government teacher is
phenomenal. He did an overview of what

Last year the 3-8 exams did not go

more seamless we will be organizing
exams as they come in and go out. I will

could do to reach this kid? He has a

horrible home life and is running out of
chances here.
Today I did discipline with Mr. Ginestre in
the room again. This does get a little
awkward for students as they are not
sure who to talk to, but I work very well
with him and appreciate his support. The
student was very honest with me. I called
his father and said how honest he had
been and that I reduced the consequence
because of this. Dad was great. We sent a
letter home as the student will have two
days in ISS.

Today I visited classrooms in the

elementary portion of the building to
observe Title time and how it is working.
This is a time when three title teachers go
into a grade level. Students are broken
into groups based on what skills they
need and both the title teachers and
general education teachers work with the
students. This takes on different forms in
each classroom based on the
personalities of the teacher. The purpose
of my visit today was to view the different
models so that when we begin to discuss
Title services for next year I have and
informed opinion. Not everyone is happy
with the current model.

Reviewed Discipline of A Student Caught

with Drugs

While I was visiting an elementary

classroom, Mr. Ginestre was alerted to
the possibility that a high school student
was high and carrying marijuana on his
person. Mr. Ginestre asked the student to
take his sweatshirt off and found there
was marijuana on this students person.
While, I was not able to be there when all
of this happened, Mr. Ginestre and I
discussed it in great detail so that I could
learn from the experience in a meeting
later in the day.

and they planned the majority of the day
during this meeting. It went very well,
but it was surprising to me how the
teachers got very bogged down by
minutia.
This was a very long meeting with a lot of
detail. I am glad I had the opportunity to
sit in on this as this was a component of
the budget I did not fully understand. I
learned a lot about BOCES services,
what is aidable, etc.

though they definitely do not see me in
the same light as Mr. Ginestre. I dont
have the same decision making power, so
I frequently told them I would have to

them. I then reported back to Mr.
Ginestre and will be following up with the
teachers tomorrow on their concerns.
Sherman has such a need for high
quality day care and prek programs. An
opportunity like this would have a huge
impact on our district. Im hoping that
through working with these ladies and
this program we can not only improve our
current program, but also start to reach
younger and younger students. These
opportunities would be a game changer
in this community. Mr. Ginestre, Mr.
Kelly and I then discussed how to move
forward with this and I met with the
prekindergarten teachers.
After speaking with Mr. Ginestre I was
able to follow up with teachers about
their concerns from yesterday. They were

I started by calling the teacher who

issued some of the referrals without
giving a lot of detail on the form to get
more detail. I called each student down.
Mr. Ginestre sat in. I discussed what the
referrals were for with them. I listened to
them. Five students got a warning. Three
got detention. I then called the parents to
the students to discuss what happened
and the punishment with them. I cant
get over how much I enjoy the discipline
piece. I really miss the kids. I enjoy
talking to them. They are so honest.

able to get her to tell the truth. I really
enjoyed getting to talk to her and help her
learn a lesson.

I really wanted a team approach and to
look at each kid to see what we could do
to help each child grow. Overall these
were very successful. I will be following
up with some teachers after these
meetings. We will do them again in the
spring to make title placements for next
year.
This call was extremely useful. This year
we were paying separately to have
IEPdirect, Powerschool, and our Lunch
system integrated. Through a new coser
next year we can have all of these
integrated along with IReady, and Castle
Learning. This will save a lot of time and
saves us money.

I get so many emails now it is essential I

We had our weekly meeting to discuss
discipline. We discussed different
approaches to it. Mr. Kelly shared with
me notes from interrogation training he
had taken several years ago. This was
fascinating. The notes showed what tells
someone may have if they are lying.
Teachers have mixed feelings about the
IReady books. Some want both the
instructional book and practice book for
both subjects others want only pieces.
These were interesting conversations with
teachers. I think it says something about
each teachers style to see what they value
in this regard. Across the board the
Handwriting Without Tears books are
loved. There main reason was because of
its ease of use.
We reviewed the next draft of the budget
going through it line by line. This was
beyond beneficial for me. I actually really
enjoyed seeing and understanding how
things fit under different codes. This was
a good experience for the future and for
my school finance class Im currently
enrolled in. I would not want to be a
business official, but I cannot wait to be
a superintendent and get to be more
involved with this piece.

their portals and complete the sign off
necessary. I then checked off each
teacher that had this completed and
made a list of errors that needed to be
corrected.
I love that we are partnering with Mrs.

something positive in the community.
This partnership will support her in this

opportunities to expand and service more

Teachers in our school do a variety of

things to teach vocabulary. Some take an
old school approach of one word a day or
a workbook, others teach it in context,
and others do not teach vocabulary. I am
hoping that through research, meetings
with teachers, and professional
development days I can assist in helping
us get a more uniform approach. We are
not doing the best we can by our kids all
using different approaches.
I enjoy hearing about Mr. Ginestre and
Mr. Kellys past experiences with
discipline. They each have very different
backgrounds and therefore have different
approaches to discipline. Both of them
have great relationships with kids and
this seems to help. I need to start going
to more events to help build the
relationships I have.

(Artifact: Test Preparation and Planning

This curriculum council was very

interesting as it brought up many of the
issues with computer based testing. I had
not thought of much of what is arising in
the field test districts. Mr. Ginestre and I
began to discuss what grade levels will go
to computer based testing first. I am
supportive of the 5/6 team starting this
venture first as they have been most
receptive to technology and their
students use it the most. It seems the
learning curve would be less at this level
than any other.
I prepared all IReady reports and all
State Test Data for fourth grade ahead of
time. I analyzed trends between the two
sets of data to see what gaps needed to
be filled in our curriculum. I also had all
state test questions from last year ready. I
reviewed this information with the
teachers, by asking them to highlight
gaps. We then took these gaps and looked
at the actual questions for next year. We
analyzed each answer and why students
missed it. We then looked at the
calendar Id prepare, our resources, and
the gaps to plan out all instruction until
the test. This was done for both subjects.

I feel this session went very well and

teachers are very prepared with what
data they need. I do not understand why

so frustrated by her scores when she

the session stating that teaching reading
is the same as it used to be why should
she have to change. I responded that we
need to up our rigor to better prepare
students for college. I feel very bad that a
new, impressionable, teacher is being
guided by a veteran who is not bought
into the Common Core curriculum. I am
proud of myself for handling her outburst
with a calm and research based

more support to the new teacher.
The assembly that was done for this

students. It sounds like an awesome
opportunity but one of us needs to pull

Lisa Carlson is our new librarian. She
has a background in video technology.
She has a million ideas on how to
enhance the Wildcat Weeks summer
programming. We talked about various
programs she wanted to use with
students. I then researched most of these
ideas after she left. Thought about how
we could fit it in the schedule and
budget. I then met with Mr. Kelly and Mr.

State Test Data ahead of time. I analyzed

questions from last year ready. I reviewed
this information with the Math teacher,
giving him time to come to these
conclusions himself through the data. I
also gave him a calendar template to map
out his instruction with each class from
not until the state test.

This teacher is resistant to my help. He is

one of the more resistant teachers in the
building to the Common Core modules
and data. I think I made some headway
with him today, but it is hard to know if I
did or not. He discounts much of the
data and it is difficult to have certain
conversations without offending him. I
also went from being his partner teacher
to now this support role. I think that this
puts a strain on the conversation. I need
to find a way to reach him and I dont
think I have done it yet. This is
frustrating, as I know I could help here.
The teacher test preparation went very
well with this group. These teachers work
amazingly well together and should be
used as a model for how two teachers
should collaborate together and intermix
their subject matters. These teachers had

How open teachers are to their data

varies greatly from teacher to teacher.
The level at which I can analyze the data
also depends on each teacher. I truly
enjoy doing these days as I get to better

testing data and better prepare
instruction for the final weeks before the

Wildcat Weeks Planning Meetings

Revamping of the Student Handbook

The Wildcat Weeks planning meetings with teachers

have been very beneficial for the planning for this
summer. Last year during my 400-hour internship, I
planned the field trips and activities and the teachers
were left to determine all curriculum. This did not
result in as robust of a program as we had wanted.
Instead this year, beginning in February I began
meeting with the teachers and Mr. Ginestre. During
these meetings we discussed theme weeks, field trips,
and helped the teachers plan how groups would rotate
and what curriculum they would use each day.
Teachers have been taking far more ownership over the
program since doing this. We will be providing students

with a far more robust program than last year due to

these meetings. Also, these meetings have encouraged
the teachers to collaborate far more than in the past.
They are going to share lessons and groups of students
now. I didnt realize how much support the teachers
needed last year. They have excellent ideas regarding
the components I did last year as well.

The revamping and updates to the Student Handbook

for the 16/17 school year went very well. The handbook
definitely needed to be updated to be more visually
appealing. The cover graphic was cloudy and the text
was not organized well. Several requirements had to be
updated throughout as well. Originally when talking to
Professor Worth she suggested I may want to add a
section specific to Wildcat Weeks. After meeting with
the principal, superintendent, parents, and teachers I
have decided not to do this. My principal brought up
that the handbook we are sure covers everything and
we dont need to worry about the legality of it. This
document is tried and true. If I were to add a section
specific to Wildcat Weeks something could be forgotten
and it could open us up to more scrutiny. Parents and
teachers felt it was good for students to understand the
same rules apply for summer as during the school
year.
Standard 2 Reflections
Data team meetings went very very well. The Title
teachers, the special education teachers, and myself
met with both grade level teachers in grades k-8 as a

team in hour increments. I had all IReady and state

test data ready for these meetings. We then used the
data to look at each student at the grade level, make
title placements, decide on curriculum for Title time for
each group of students, decide on how Title time
should look, and discuss any needs of students that
were not currently being met. Teachers took a team
approach to these discussions and we had very
productive discussions about curriculum, individual
student needs and ways for all teachers to support the
learning that is happening in the classroom.
Data analysis was done on my end prior to test
preparation meetings. I analyzed each grade level K-8s
Iready assessment data, their growth, areas of
weakness and areas of strength. This allowed me to be
very informed prior to having teacher meetings. I also
looked at all 3-8 state test data. I analyzed cohorts
their overall proficiency and their rank in the county.
This was extremely time consuming but effective. I
then looked at each groups question specific data to
see if any standards were lacking across the grade
levels. I did find some consistent weaknesses across
the grade levels and that our students tend to have
more gaps in multiple choice than in writing to the
county and BOCES. After analyzing this data I held full
day meetings with grade level teachers to focus on their
specific gaps and discuss gaps found across the
district. I then lead teachers through filling out a
template that planned their instruction for the

remainder of the time until the state tests. To do this

we utilized the gaps they found their group to have
from that groups previous year data and the gaps in
their instruction from the teachers previous years
data.
Standard 3 Reflections
I am so glad I sat in on budget meetings. I attended a
BOCES budget meeting, two overall whole district
budget meetings, a teacher requisition meeting, and a
meeting regarding grants. These were eye opening. I
now have a thorough understanding of each piece and
how different services and how our district pays for
materials. Out of everything Ive done for my internship
this was by far the most worthwhile. Ive always
thought that my weakness as an administrator may be
the financial component of running a district. I no
longer feel this way. This came very easy to me. I
understand the way things are coded how they are
aidable, etc. It helped that I am in my school finance
class while doing this part of the internship. I also
found that the key is being close with your school
business official. I have a personal friendship with our
business official so this made it very easy to learn from
her and ask questions if I had any.
Standard 4 Reflections
I already reflected on the Wildcat Weeks planning
meetings, so I will discuss the Quality Stars visit and
the visit to Chautauqua Lake. Through the award of a
competitive grant we were able to take our Prek to a full
day program last year. This grant requires certain

Discipline with Students

things and we have site visits to insure that we are

doing these things. Not having extensive knowledge
myself on what the best screening tool for Prek, best
professional development for Prek teachers, best
assessment tool, etc. my Superintendent put me in
contact with two ladies from Quality Stars. I then
completed this application. This program and these
ladies are there to support us in insuring we have a
high quality early childhood program. Part two of this
relationship with these ladies was to visit the
Chautauqua Lake Early Childhood program. One of
these ladies runs this program. We know that Sherman
has no day care facilities or early learning programs
anywhere nearby. The closest services are 25 minutes
away in Jamestown. Therefore we are actively
researching how to expand our early learning
opportunities here. Our visit was eye opening. The
infant room was a little overwhelming to imagine
setting up here. However, we are going to start with
baby steps. Even though my internship will be ending
soon, I will continue to pursue this. My next step is to
send out a survey to the district to assess the need. Is
this a need we truly have or do we just think we have
it?
Standard 5 Reflections
I love doing discipline with students. Not to be
boastful, but I was a very good classroom teacher
because I know how to talk to kids. I think I am far
better with students than with adults. I didnt realize
how much I miss spending time with students until I

started doing discipline. I learned a ton from Mr.

Ginestre and was able to run all discipline I took care
of by him. Students were honest with me and I was
able to form a relationship with them easily. I really
enjoyed getting to do this piece because of the student
interaction. I also like that the teachers were willing to
turn to me during this experience. As their former
colleague this could have been odd. It really was not.
They wanted help and I wanted to be able to support
them. This went really really well. I learned so much
throughout the experience. Mr. Ginestre taught me to
always check the students grades so that this could be
a talking point as well as whatever the discipline is. He
also taught me how to know if I needed to call a parent
after talking to their child.
Standard 6 Reflections
Both of these were reflected on previously.
Standard 7 Reflections
This internship has been amazing. Ive gotten a sneak
peak into the job of a Principal and Superintendent. I
have gotten experience in every aspect of the school
from budgeting to discipline to curriculum. It has
allowed me to learn and grow as a leader through being
involved in every decision from the group up. I have
learned from Mr. Ginestre and grown to rely on him
and value having such a strong mentor. I know how
important it is to have people you can call and ask
questions, as being an administrator can be a lonely

job. I found I truly have that in him. I can ask anything

and have his support. Im thrilled I had this
opportunity and am so thankful that I will be
continuing to work and learn with such amazing
people.
