In an experiment to study the effect of waste disposal on aquatic organisms in a pond, the
results obtained were plotted on a graph as shown in the diagram above.
What is the process at P?
[1 mark]
During this process, why is the algae population growing very fast?
[2 marks]
(b) What are the effects of the increased growth of algae that covers the surface of the
pond?
[3 marks]
(c) Why does the aquatic animal population decrease when the population of algae
increases?
[2 marks]
Two water samples were taken from area P and QR respectively. The two samples were
tested with methylene blue. The water sample P decolourised faster than QR.
What is the objective of this experiment?

( a ) Predator-prey relationship is where one organism hunts and eats the other
organism. The organism which hunts is called predator, while the organism being
hunted is called prey.
Energy received from the sun is transferred from animals when the prey is eaten by the
predator. The predator now has its preys energy.
