IDEAS FOR USING OLD BEADS

Im sure most beaders can relate to the
frustration of having a handful of beads
leftover after completing a project. Much of
the time these beads are stashed away only
to be forgotten about. Next time you have
spare beads but not quite enough to make
a new design, why not consider these easy
options:

BEADED BEADS

Creative Beading

The perfect way to utilise beads when there

are not enough to make another design,
beaded beads are easy to make and will
ensure your beads wont go to waste.
Best of all they can be used as a great
component or accent in finished jewellery

LEATHER CORD NECKLACE

A leather cord necklace is the perfect way
to use leftover beads as it requires minimal
materials and is super quick and easy to put
together. All you will need is a piece of 1mm
leather cord, a focal bead and an even number
of beads to place on either side. Instructions:

close to knots.

UPCYCLED NECKLACE
There are plenty of upcycled necklace projects
out there. This is a great way to use beads,
particularly if you have amassed various types,
as the more eclectic the beads are, the more
unique your ensemble will look. Take a look

BEADS TAKE OVER

DROP EARRINGS

Bead lovers can rejoice this season, as fashion

accessories in general are seeing an increase
in beading as embellishments. An all-time
favourite of beading enthusiasts, the floating
bead necklace is in hot demand this season
and is appearing in the collections of many
highly regarded fashion labels. There is also
a trend toward long, falling beaded necklaces
which are worn almost like body chains. In
terms of colours, white and grey seem to
dominate as they fulfil a more contemporary
look that is currently trending. On the other
end of the spectrum, beads are also being
used in single earrings, bringing in an 80s
feel. It is clear that the diversity of beads are
being utilised to cater to a wide range of
trends this winter.

Somewhere between should-grazing

chandelier earrings and subtle studs, at the
moment it is all about drop earrings. Plated
earrings in general are in, but when they are
dropped we tend to pay extra attention to the
intricate detail of the design. And thanks to
the limitless imagination of jewellery makers,
the drop earring can be created to suit any
occasion, from formal events to playfully
casual looks. A step from the classic yet more
serious studs, the drop earring can be worn
without overwhelming your outfit if paired with
an appropriate hairstyle and bare neckline.
Consider using rhinestones, onyx orbs and
metal wires to create a beautiful, face framing
pair of earrings.

BAUBLE BRACELETS
PLATE NECKLACES
It is easy to make a statement with the
powerful plate necklace. Proving to be
especially popular this season are golden
breastplate necklaces, which often resemble
either a specific shape or abstract motif.
Quite often, less is more and basic metals
such as brass or metallic hues create
a perfectly rustic look. There is also an
increasing trend to embellish such necklaces
with fabric and feathers, with some plate
necklaces even experimenting with floral.
Strong, tough and feminine are all rolled
into one look with this bold accessory!

Any look is incomplete without the alluring

beauty of bracelets. And what better way
to compliment your outfit than with a stylish
bauble bracelet. Baubles are in demand
this season and there are no limits to how
you can embellish them. Recent trends
include more feminine shapes such as
intricate vine and leaf designs set against
pearls. But this accessory does not have
to stop there. For a contemporary feel,
many are keeping it simple, embellishing
thick bracelets with large egg-shaped
stones for added effect. For a quirkier
feel, some accessory designers are

TECHNIQUES
THAT CHALLENGE
Beaders looking for
a challenge might
want to consider
experimenting with
these techniques:
Wire knitting
Knitting with wire can
be a lot of fun but
differs from how you
would normally knit
yarn. Knitting with
wire requires plenty of
practice before you
achieve a uniform
look. The ideal gauge
size for knitting wire is
between 24 and 30.
Any bigger and it will
simply be too delicate
to work with. Whilst
stitching, you can also
add beads by pushing
a bead to the end of
your working wire and
holding it between two
stitches. Remember, you
can pull and stretch
your work every few
rows to block it to the
shape you want.

Felted beads
Felt beads are easy
and very inexpensive
to make. You only
need a few grams
of merino wool and
soapy water. Felt is
basically made by
mashing a bunch of
wool fibres together
until they become
one mass. Combined
with glass, metal
or ceramic beads,
they make beautiful
jewellery and they
can be made into
decorations, zip
pulls, hair pins,
charms for purses
the list is endless!

MINIMALIST GEOMETRIC SHAPES

14

Creative Beading

Bring basic back into your life with

geometric jewellery. This is a trend many
designers are presently embracing, with
top labels using bold shapes to create
the perfect edge to elegant statement
pieces. As fun as it is to experiment with
challenging designs, sometimes the most
basic shapes have more impact. Minimalist
does not have to mean boring. Geometric
designs can include 3D shapes created
from intertwining strips to enhance a

CUFF BRACELETS
There is nothing quite like a cuff bracelet
to add dimension to your outfit. Although
many bracelet trends seem to have a past
life, this is one accessory that is making
a comeback. And there is no doubt why;
cuffs are simple to wear yet create a strong
impact, especially if embellished with the
right motifs. High fashion accessories are
seeing cuffs adorned with a combination of
fabric and metal to form beautiful pieces.

Beading on a loom
For those who have
tried beading with
only a needle and
thread, you will know
it is a long process.
Once you decide
to introduce pattern
into the design, you
have a complicated
and time consuming
technique. This is
where the bead
loom comes in
handy. This type of
loom has been used
in both traditional
and modern day
beading to make the
process both faster
and easier. Even if
you are a beginner,
beading on a loom
is a technique you
can quickly learn
and one that will
greatly benefit more
complicated projects
you decide to tackle.

Rose gold cuff bracelet

Structural bracelet

Some are even incorporating Swarovski crystals to

create some eye-catching sparkle. This seasons
array of cuff bracelets are also delicately sculpted
in rose gold and silver finishes. For a modern
feel, copy the experts and experiment with bright
coloured leather such as burnt orange, as seen on
many a runway this season.

SCULPTURAL JEWELLERY
In the sense that geometric jewellery is taking on
a low embellishment yet high impact vibe, it
only makes sense that sculptural accessories

High fashion accessories are

form beautiful pieces.
are becoming a trend alongside their geometric
counterparts. The likes of choker necklaces and
bracelets are comprised of thick pieces of metal
twisted by hand to create gaudy, structurally
appealing pieces. This look is also impacting
the traditionally delicate ring and it is now more
common for these twisted metal accessories to
be worn around double fingers. If you have a
soft side for edgy pieces, this trend is the perfect
excuse to start experimenting with funky geometric
designs!

Handcrafted
with Love
Beautiful designs handcrafted with love
one stitch at a time!
BY DANIELLE RYAN

LUBA SURMON lives by the mantra life

is too short not to surround yourself with
beautiful things. A connoisseur of beautiful
designs, anyone would mistake Luba for
a lifelong arts and crafts enthusiast. Lus
work might reflect genuine dedication,
quality and exquisite creativity however,
she surprisingly admits that initially she
was never that interested in craft. I started
knitting and crocheting for something to
do in front of the fireplace. My sister tried
to teach me how to knit and crochet when
I was a child, where I learnt the basics.
Later on I taught myself more stitches and
techniques by watching YouTube videos.
Lu soon realised the enjoyment she
gained from crocheting and it became
a portable hobby, used to pass time on
her daily commute. As most busy women,
Lu doesnt have a great deal of spare
time at home so being able to crochet on
the train every day is the perfect hobby,
offering both relaxation and a creative
way to unwind and pass time. Now that Lu
had established a passion for crocheting,
it wouldnt be long until she discovered a
new obsession. Lu tried beading for the first
time in 2010 after being inspired by a wire
crochet demonstration on Better Homes and
Gardens. As Lu puts it, that was it, I was
hooked! My beading obsession had begun.
26

Creative Beading

PROFILE

The word obsession would quickly

become an understatement. Lu would
find herself dedicating any spare time she
had to designing new pieces, shopping
for beads, mixing and blending colours
of beads, matching beads with wire and
researching new techniques and designs.
I love the challenge of learning new
things and once I learn a technique,
I push the boundaries, exclaims Lu.
Last year, Lu was looking for something
different and found Yoola Invisible Spool
Knitting (ISK). She describes it as a bit
like spool or bobbin knitting and even
though the technique is primarily used
to create wire mesh, Lu has innovatively
incorporated beads into her designs,
experimenting with sequin coin purses and
home-made felt beads and bangles.
As an experimenter, Lu admits her style
cannot be defined and that she generally
creates items from whichever materials strike
her interest. Having a love for all things
that glitter, Lu will usually spend her free
time making beautiful items that sparkle. This
factor simply adds to her uniqueness, which
often see her designs incorporating metallic
wire mesh and crochet knots. As the items
are either knitted or crocheted, Lu goes out
of her way to ensure her designs have a
modern, elegant and sophisticated twist,

proving that knitting and crochet doesnt

have to look nanna-ish.
Now that Lu was dedicating much of her
time to creating quality pieces, the next
question was where to from here? After
continuously hearing a chorus of you should
sell that! on the completion of an item, Lu
was very fortunate to have two friends that
allowed her to leave her items at their gallery
and boutique for sale on consignment. This
is where Lu would sell her items for several
ears. After a successful run at the gallery,
the sales further funded Lus bead and wire
addiction. The memory of her first sale is still
clearly etched in her mind, I received a text
from the boutique. I was so excited I dont
think I breathed all the way home on the train
and certainly was too excited to concentrate
on what I was crocheting!
As flattering as it was to have regular
sales, Lu felt a bit stifled as this commitment
meant she no longer had enough time
to create gifts for family and friends and
less time to experiment and learn new
techniques. As someone who loved giving
presents, not being able to create gifts
greatly impacted Lu, forcing her to refrain
from selling her items for a few years. This
break was a blessing, as once again Lu had
time to make birthday and Christmas gifts,
as well as experiment with and learn new

techniques. The hiatus also meant that Lu

could focus on another activity close to her
heart charity work. Lu generously donates
pieces to animal charities so they can be
auctioned to raise money.
Throughout her time as a jewellery maker,
Lu states that a major highlight for her has
been the moments when she has learnt
a new technique or design. In addition to
sharing her story with readers of Creative
Beading, she also has some exciting future
plans. Lu will soon sell her creations for the
first time from a market stall and is also
considering running classes on wire crochet.
For those who have been inspired by Lus

story and would like to give wire crochet a

go, she has these tips
Use crochet hooks around 1mm size. Any less
than 0.75 mm is painful if you accidentally stab
your finger.
Always used dead soft wire. Half hard wire
will not work as it is not pliable enough and
breaks easily.
Lu prefers to use 32 gauge copper plated
wire. It comes in tonnes of colours and after
some finessing the wire mesh can feel as soft
and pliable as fabric.
If the design requires a bit of stiffness, Lu
recommends starting with 28 gauge wire,
especially if you are new to wire crochet.

PROFILE

Unlike yarn, you dont hold

the wire while you work to
maintain the tension. Leave
it loose and draped. Let the
weight of the wire and beads
maintain a natural tension.
Wire is very different to crochet than yarn. It
is not very forgiving. Try your hardest to keep
your wire smooth, with no knots or kinks. If
you have a tight kink or knot in the wire, when
you straighten it the wire will break.
Stitches look much neater if you keep the
wire smooth. If you get a crease in the wire
you can straighten it by pressing it between
your thumb and crochet hook handle and
pulling it through.
The wire on the spool in some cases can be
wound very tightly and is very springy. Unwind
a little at a time and keep it fastened to the
spool with a clip or peg to avoid it unravelling
into a mess.
Unlike yarn, you dont hold the wire while
you work to maintain the tension. Leave it
loose and draped. Let the weight of the wire
and beads maintain a natural tension.
Most importantly, take a breath, persevere
and be patient!
For the time being, Lu is working on
growing her business and prides herself on
her designs, which are handcrafted, one
stitch at a time. Lu promises that although her
crocheted jewellery wont keep you warm this
winter, her designs will warm your heart!
Lu invites you to contact her via her Facebook
page for any advice on her techniques. If you

Resin Beads
The types of beads available for jewellery making vary significantly in terms of
shape, material and size. A popular type of bead which falls under the acrylic
category is resin beads. These beads are similar to plastic beads, with the
exception of using fabric and other materials to give resin beads a better look
and finish. Best of all, resin beads are inexpensive yet still create brilliantly
coloured and lightweight jewellery.
Here are some beautiful resin beads on the market right now!

STEP EIGHT
Cover the black section with foil and rub with
the roller to make sure it is well attached.
Place the jelly roll slices to cover the join,
pushing them on firmly, even if that distorts
the pendant a little. Gently roll the pendant
thinner, rolling both up, down, and from side
to side so that the foil cracks apart. Photo 8

STEP SIX
Pile the remaining pieces of jelly roll together
so a variety of colours are showing, cutting
lengthwise to reveal the inner colours if
necessary. Twist the pile so the stripes start to
spiral around. Keep twisting, alternating with
rolling to keep the block neat, until the spirals
seem to circle around like rings. Compress the
block into a rectangular shape.Photo 6

STEP SEVEN
Cut the block in half lengthwise. Each half is
used to make one pendant. For one pendant
use the stripy side, and for the other use the
inside pattern. Compress each of the halves
together with an equal amount of black clay,
so as to form a rough pendant shape, but
smaller and thick. Photo 7

Finalise the pendant shape. Options include:

a) Hand shaping, making a bail with a leftover
piece. Shape the leftover piece into a bail
shape and make a threading hole using a
pin. Enlarge the hole with a cocktail stick or
knitting needle, depending on desired hole
size. (Photo 9) Press the bail onto the pendant
to join, making sure there is lots of contact
area by extending the bail piece down the
back of the pendant.

Photo 9.

b) Enlarging the pendant by placing it on

a black sheet, rolling it larger and using a
flexible blade to achieve the finished shape.
Photo 10. Pierce a hole as in (a).

Photo 10.

c) Cutting with a cookie cutter such as a heart

cutter (Photo 11) and optionally attaching a
metal bail (secure bail with glue after baking).

Photo 11.

d) Hand shaping, optionally adding little black

clay balls to dress it up. Photo 12. Make a
threading hole as in (a).

STEP TEN
Smooth the pendants, rubbing with roller
to remove fingerprints. Place on baking
paper on a tray, or on a ceramic tile. Cover
with a double layer of baking paper to
help moderate temperature fluctuations.
Follow the manufacturers instructions for
baking temperature and time, ensuring the
temperature is not exceeded by using an oven
thermometer.

STEP ELEVEN
Varnish the foiled area of the pendant using
a polymer clay varnish. (Other varnishes may
react with the clay). Varnishing of the unfoiled
area is optional.

STEP TWELVE
Finish by threading in preferred style. If
threading with tubing covered with Tigertail,
include a small bead between the pendant
and the tube as this will help it to hang more
neatly. Clasps can be attached to the Tigertail
using a charlotte and crimp. See the Basic
Instructions for more details.

Make a skinner blend.

Design notes on making a Multi-coloured
skinner blend:
When choosing colours to make a multicoloured skinner blend, always remember
not all colours blend well together; dark
colours will take over light colours. If in
doubt, add white between layers - this
allows colours to blend better and brightens

up finished skinner blend. Metallic clays can

also add a beautiful shimmer to blends.
How to: On the thickest setting on the pasta
machine, condition each colour of clay.
Condition lightest colour to darkest colour to
cut down on the colour transfer onto lighter
colours. As your conditioning clay, shape it to
a long thin rectangle.
On a sheet of baking paper, lay first rectangle
of clay, cut this on the diagonal to form first
triangle (Photo 6) put the unused triangle
aside.Lay the next colour rectangle directly next
to the first and cut second triangle, (Photo 7)
keep laying clay next to each other in triangles
making sure the edges are touching using the
white and metallic between colours to help with
the blending. Photo 8
Once all clay is cut, (Photo 9) take brayer
and roll it over the sheet to encourage the
edges to push together, this helps keep it
together when passing through the pasta
machine.

Fold sheet in half top to bottom and using

brayer, roll over the sheet a few times. (Photo 10)
Remove from the sheet and place it fold
down in pasta machine (set to its thickest
setting) and run through the machine, fold
again top to bottom and run fold down
through the machine, continue folding the clay
and running it through the pasta machine.
Continue folding and blending clay until the
colours are mixed with no sharp lines, colours
should run into each other. Run the finished
sheet twice more through the machine without
folding the clay, but each time reducing the
thickness one notch on the machine, this will
stretch blend and give you slightly larger sheet
of clay to work with.
Always fold top to bottom this is essential
for the clay colours to blend together.
Dont over trim and neaten up rectangles
or triangles before you start, by cutting off too
much clay neatening edges, you end up with a
small blend and a large pile of scrap clay.

Photo 11.

Photo 12.

TECHNIQUE INTENSIVE

Photo 13.

STEP ONE
Choose interesting sections on skinner blend
and cut out your leaves. Photo 13.

STEP TWO
Using sculpting tool indent the leaf to form its
veins, a simple centre vein with a few coming
off it, smooth or remove any scrapings this
might leave on the top of the leaf and give
your leaf a little tug at the end to slightly
re-shape. Photos 14 and 15.

STEP THREE
With sculpting tool scratch up the back of the
face, this helps it stick to the leaf.

STEP FOUR
Place face into position on the leaf.

STEP FIVE
Using some of the scrap from the skinner
blend roll several small balls of different colour
clays, roll some small snake shapes.

STEP SEVEN
STEP SIX
Place the balls against the edge of the face, use
the ball tool to indent the balls, this helps stick
to the face and leaf and also creates detail in
the design. Curl up some of the simple snakes
of clay and add to the design, at this point its
purely decorative, addin interest to the design.

Using a small leaf cutter, cut a leaf, fold this

over at the centre and add to the top of the
pendant to form a bail, or simply use your
ballpoint tool to create a hole at the top of
the pendant.
Once you are happy, bake in at 150 degrees
for 40 mins. Due to the face and the additions
being thicker than the leaf, bake clay for longer
than recommended, as long as oven temp
is even it will not burn the clay. Use an oven
thermometer to keep an eye on your work.

BASIC INSTRUCTIONS

Basics and
all that o er stuff
you need to kno eventually
by Annlee Butler
I AM ALWAYS AMAZED at how many talented beaders
and wire workers we have in Australia. Again this year our
Inspiration Beading book is filled with projects to fuel your
creativity. The diagrams and techniques described here will
provide you with a general guide to complete the projects
in this book and have been developed by trial and error
over many years of beading and teaching. Sometimes it is
the smallest things that can make your beading time more
enjoyable like being able to thread a beading needle first
go, or rolling neat loops, or being confident that your knots
will not come undone. Even if you are an experienced beader
I hope that this information is helpful to you.
Price verses Quality: Remember, the same is true
in beading as in all aspects of product purchasing.

As a general rule, if its cheaper it is because the

quality is not as good or as consistent as a comparable
more expensive item. If your project does not require
uniform beads or you do not use wire tools very often,
try to get the best you can in quality for the price you are
willing to pay.

TOOLS
The most important thing make sure your tools are
comfortable to hold. I like my tool handles to come past
the end of my thumb muscle. I once turned 700 eye pins
in one day and used a shorter handled pair of tools. The
bruise in the palm of my hand was a spectacular blue and
black for a week.

These are the tools I would recommend as a general kit:

Chain nose pliers: These pliers are
available straight or bent and have
a flat surface in the middle and a
rounded outside edge. They are
ideal for opening and closing jump
rings, pulling a needle through
beadwork, and are the first step in
forming any loops. See diagrams.

Wire cutters: Come in two forms flush

cutters or side cutters. Flush cutters are
useful for cutting straight lines and side
cutters form a point on the wire end
a lot of cutters have both these cuts.
Look closely if one side is straight and
the other forms a 90 degree angle, you
will be able to use both by just turning
the tool to the side you wish to use.

Round nose pliers: Have two round

cone shaped jaws and are used for
second steps in forming loops.

Round nose pliers

Nylon jaw pliers: Have two jaws that

are made of nylon and are used for
tensioning wire or work that requires
special care to leave no marks.

Chain nose pliers

Crimping pliers: Have two

shaped holes specifically designed
to achieve a folded crimp.

BASIC INSTRUCTIONS
THREADS
Silimides: C-lon, S-lon, and Nymo have a one way
warp. What does that mean? Just like materials, if it is
threaded the wrong way to the warp it will be difficult to
use; it will constantly spiral into a knotted mess. If you
are not sure if your thread has a warp or not, thread it
as if it does and you cant go wrong.
To make sure you thread correctly: Pull 10cm of thread
off the bobbin and thread your needle on this 10cm; now
pull off the rest of the thread of the bobbin and cut the
thread. This is a good practice to get into. If you have
to answer the telephone, you will know which end is the
correct working end as your needle will already be on.
Fireline: Use this thread if you are working with crystals
or bugles. I definitely recommend it for strength and
durability.
Glues: Please do not use superglues, they crack and
will break threads and knots when they crack. The best
glues are ones that are safe to wear on the skin, such

OTHER TOOLS
Beading needles: Come in a variety of sizes and lengths.
As a general rule, if you are working with size 11 to size 6
beads, a size 12 will pass easily through a couple of times
with thread. If you are working with size 15 beads, a size
13 is more comfortable but will bend much quicker; keep
a few on hand and think about changing sizes while you
work if you find a size 13 slower to work with.
Fine pointed scissors: A fine pointed pair of scissors
such as patchworkers or embroiderers use are really great
they usually have a cover and the small pointed ends
allow you to get tight up to the bead work to trim thread.
Awl, for pearl knots and others: This small device allows
you slip your knot into place before tightening. I have found
the best awl is an extra large paper clip pull one end of the
paper clip wire straight, the remaining bent section is a good
finger-holding size and the wire diameter is perfect.

HOW MANY BEADS?

as Hypo-cement, E6000 and just plain clear nail polish

for spotting knots.

How many is enough? Stupid question never enough.

I once made a lamp shade fringe with size 11 seed beads,
and not really knowing how many beads I needed to make
it, I purchased two kilograms of the main colour and 500
grams of the other colours combined. Now, how many
should I have bought?
There were 525 drops of 15cm each, so using the chart
below I could have calculated this way:
1cm = 7 beads. 15cm x 7 beads = 105 beads per drop.
105 beads x 525 drops = 55,125 beads.
55,125 beads divided by 110 beads per gram = 501.1
grams. Just a little less than the 2.5 kilograms I bought.
To get a square area, multiply width by height. So, if I had a
loom amulet bag that was 5 x 6 cm for one side, I would go:
5 x 6 cm = 30cm
30 cm x 2 sides = 60

60 x 42 = 2520 beads divided by 200 average

By the way, I am still using up the rest of the leftover two
kilograms of beads I bought for the lamp.

1.

After forming ladder to start.

Begin each brick stitch row with 2 beads go under

3.

4.

Using roundnose pliers grip wire above bead press with

fingers to right angle. Place pliers in upright position
and pull wire over top of pliers and back to right to form
neat round loop. The size of your loop will vary on where
you place the pliers on the wire.
So when wrapping a number of loops that you require
the same size, draw a line across your pliers with a ink
marker at the point you wish to wrap at. Move pliers to
hold loop just formed. Pull wire firmly up to bottom of
circle and wrap wire in tight circle motion around wire
above bead, cut and trim excess wire.

LOOP TURNING
AND TRIMING
Position crimp and wire in pliers cup shaped hole. This is
usually closest to handle. Squash crimp. Move squashed
crimp to circle shaped hole at front of pliers, with cup
facing sideways like a back to front C gently compress
to form a ball. Test to ensure crimp is secure.

1.

To open a jumpring grasp the open ring either side of

the opening with flat or chainnose pliers. Bring one pair
of pliers toward you and push the other away.
To close a jumpring reverse this movement. Apply slight
pressure inwards on rings that are widely opened. Never
pull rings apart outwards as this will distort shape and
weaken jumpring.

FLAT EVEN COUNT PEYOTE

Thread on an even number of beads. This forms 1st and
2nd row. This can be done with any number of beads as
long as it is an even number.

Pick up 1 bead and thread back through 2nd bead

from needle in opposite direction this is the 3rd row.
Pick up 1 beads and skipping 1 bead go through
next bead. Pick up 1 bead, skip next bead and go
through last bead.

STOPPER BEADS

A stopper bead is used to temporarily secure beads

at the start or finish of work, Choose a different
colour bead than your work unless it is to stay in
bead work. Leave approx 10 15cm of thread
and go back through bead in the same direction
a couple of times for tension. To remove after work
is finished roll bead in your hand and loosen with
your needle.

BEAD CONES

SQUARE STITCH BASICS

String the required number of beads for the first row.
String 1st bead of row 2. Go through the last bead of row 1
in a circular direction going also through 1st bead of row 2.
This bead will sit on top of the last bead of the 1st row.

Cut a section of wire at least 3 cm longer than the bead/s

you wish to use, turn a simple loop on one end, thread
bead/s complete with a simple loop for the second end.
To wrap eyepin cut wire 4 cm longer than the bead/s to
be used, turn a wrapped loop on one end of wire, thread
bead/s, complete with a wrapped loop for the second end,
do not forget to add next link or clasp before completeing.

BRICK STITCH

Diagram 1

Continue picking up 1 bead and in circular direction pick

bead up from row below. Continue until the end of the row.
Create a wrapped loop as in diagram, on one end of
wire. A wrapped loop is better than a loop as this
will stop stringing from slipping out. Place stringing
onto loop, attach using knots or crimps as per your
necklace design.
Slip wire and stringing into cone as high as possible.
Create a second wrapped loop on the top of the cone
using wrapped loop instructions, do not forget to add
clasp if needed before completing wrap.

KNOTS
After forming ladder to start.
Begin each brick stitch row with 2 beads go under
thread between the second and third bead on the
ladder, go up through the second bead added,
then down the first. Come back up the second
bead. Continue by adding one bead and passing
the needle under the next loop of thread on the
row below.

Diagram 2

At the end of the row simple turn your work over

and complete diagram 1 and diagram 2 for the next
row. It is important to turn your work as this will
give you correct tension and your work will not have
a sideways slope.

1.

2.

At the end of each third row run your thread through the
row below where you finished and the row you are on
now back to the same position.

FLATTENED CRIMP

Square knot: bring left-hand thread over the right-hand

thread and around. Cross right over left and go through
the loop. Spot glue all knots.

CHARLOTTES

Position crimp gently with chainnose pliers, making sure that

wires are tensioned correctly gently flatten crimp using pliers,
so it remains in alignment with wire in a neat square shape.
Test to ensure crimp is secure before proceeding.

Surgeons knot: bring left-hand thread over the

right hand thread and around. Form a loop and go
through the loop. Go through again. Move knot to
exact spot you require it before tightening, this knot
is very secure and will not undo easily. Spot glue
all knots.

Thread tiger tail or thread through charlotte hole. Place

a flattened crimp on tiger tail or knot thread so that it
sits in the cup area. Trim excess. Using chain nose pliers
fold cups sections together.

BASIC INSTRUCTIONS
WIRE GUARD

COIL ENDS

FRENCH WIRE

1. Double the end of your cord. (Optional: add a dab

of glue.)

2. Twist the cord slightly as you push it all the way into
the coil end. Since cord width varies, so does the ease
of this step.
These are a fairly new invention and are great to
use with Tigertail and crimp finishing. They are U
shaped with a channel that the Tigertail threads
through and are added into the clasp loop to stop
wear on the Tigertail. To use, thread a crimp, thread
Tigertail through the left side channel, hook through
the clasp loop, thread Tigertail through clasp loop,
take Tigertail back down the right side channel and
through crimp. Lastly, fold or flatten crimp.

78

Creative Beading

3. Using a regular pair of jewellery pliers, crimp down

the last half coil, securing the coil end.

French Wire has many names it is also known as bullion

or gimp, it is a fine coil of wire that was mainly used
in the past for protecting silk while stringing pearls
but is now being used on other wires and threads as a
protector, it has no strength to hold, so you still need to
add a crimp or a knot, while it is fiddley to use, as it will
quickly unravel to look just like a fine piece of wire, it is
well worth the effort to give work a professional finish.
To use: cut a small section with very sharp cutters,
thread a crimp or a seed beads to hide knot on to work,
string French wire onto threading material, and finding
being used, pass back through crimp or bead and pull
gently until French wire is firm in a loop through finding.
A word of caution you only get one go at this process
tension gently before crimping or knotting.
