Give Us This Day Our Daily Bread

The eyes of all look to you, and you give them their food at the proper time,
You open your hand and satisfy the desires of every living thing.
Psalm 145:15-16
Our dear, precious Savior teaches us to pray: Our Father
who art in heaven, hallowed by thy name, thy Kingdom come, thy
will be done on earth as it is in heaven. With these petitions He
directs our thoughts to the spiritual and eternal blessings of the
kingdom of heaven and would have us pray first and foremost for
these. "And this is good, for we poor, earthbound creatures are always
more inclined to lose sight of them in our concern for temporal, earthly things. Jesus does not forget our earthly
needs and He gives us one petition for our temporal needs and that is daily bread. He assures us that we need
not worry about our daily needs, but that we should rather daily ask him to provide for them and with a childlike
faith trust him to do so.
In using the phrase daily bread, the Savior, as Luther says in the Small Catechism, means everything
that we need for our bodily welfare: Daily bread includes everything that has to do with the support and needs of the
body, such as food, drink, clothing, shoes, house, home, land, animals, money, goods, a devout husband or wife, devout
children, devout workers, devout and faithful rulers, good government, good weather, peace, health, self control, good
reputation, good friends, faithful neighbors, and the like. (Luthers Small Catechism).
In fact our Savior would have us include in this prayer for daily bread everything which is absolutely
indispensable at any particular time for our survival. The term daily bread" seems to prevent us from asking for
wealth and luxury, rather than for what we need for everyday living. St Paul writes But if we have food and clothing,
with these we will be content 1 Timothy 6:8. Psalm 62:10 says: if riches increase, set not your heart on them.
The Lord has truly blessed us with daily bread this month. Christopher was hospitalized again in Hong
Kong. He spent eight days hospitalized and during this time the LORD continued to deliver His daily bread.
Beginning with a mom and a dad knowing it was time to go to the emergency room, Christopher's cold moved
into his lungs and was igniting his asthma. A taxi transported us to the hospital, where nurses and a doctor
administered Gods daily bread which took the form of a a nebulizer, a shot, an X-ray, a nose and throat swab,
blood draw, and a hospital bed on the second floor pediatrics ward. Soon breathing treatments, steroids,
antibiotics, oxygen, and a host of meds were administered to clear up his lungs. Food consumption suspended for
four more days; IV only. The doctor wanted Christopher's body to rest and heal, not spend energy digesting
food.
It was wonderful to see the LORD blessing Christopher with all kinds of daily bread, even
some respiratory therapists pounded on his back to give him

some percussion therapy. In the end the LORD has given

Christopher back His health through healing and daily bread.

Jesus came to be that bread from heaven to take care of our

greatest need, the forgiveness of our sins. Forgiveness splashed on our
foreheads, spoken in our ears in absolution, and placed in our mouth
at the Lords table. As Gods children, we should and will pray to God
for the things we need. Not only that, but we will readily acknowledge
that He supplies those needs and for this we continue to thank Him
for doing so. Even isn sickness there is healing either now in this life
or heaven, and for this we rejoice.

How Are LCMS Missionaries Supported

Missionaries with The Lutheran Church- Missouri Synod
employ the Network Supported Model (NSM). In years past the
LCMS supported missionaries from mission offerings giving to the
Synod. This is no longer the case. (If you would like to know more
about the reasons why, click on the following link:
http://www.lcms.org/Missionarysupport the article is down on the
left side of the screen.) So what does the NSM mean? LCMS
missionaries visit with congregations and individuals, sharing what
Christ is doing around the world and offering listeners opportunities
to invest their support in this work. Missionaries now must receive
enough support to sustain them in the field before being deployed
overseas. Once that is achieved the missionary is deployed.
However, a continued healthy network of support is needed for
a missionary to remain in the field. While prayer and volunteer
support are important, they cannot be easily measured. Thus financial
support is used as the measuring rod for determining the sustainability
of the network. A healthy, sustainable network provides for the
missionary so he can focus on the work he was called to do.
Through ongoing partnerships, ideally, a missionarys support
network will have 90% recurring monthly gifts or annual pledges and
the remaining 10% will be from special gifts. Any and all financial
gifts are deeply appreciated.
Because this is a partnership; this working together to share the
Good News of Jesus Christ, a missionary remains in regular contact
with his network. Thus allowing them to see how they are
participating in Christs work abroad.
The amount of financial support required to keep the Kolb
family in the field $184,450. Even though this number sounds great, if
it is broken down into categories by monthly supporters, it is much
more manageable.
Thank you for all of your support of the work of The LCMS as
we together work to go and make disciples of all nations, Matthew 28:19.
Included in this newsletter is the Kolb giving sheet. If you are
not currently a monthly supporter, please consider becoming one.
Thank you.
In Christ, Pastor Kolb and Family

Gifts received for LCMS international workers are deposited in an account restricted for the support of eligible international workers. Any gifts
received in excess of a workers requirement for a given year are held for that worker until needed. Should a workers service conclude for any
reason, the funds remaining in the restricted account will be transferred to one or more eligible LCMS international workers who most closely fulfill
the restrictions of the original gift. With documented donor permission, a restricted gift can also be utilized to support international work budgeted
by the LCMS. Your gift is tax deductible to the extent permitted by law.

Pastor and Kristie Kolb have been called to serve

on behalf of The Lutheran ChurchMissouri
Synod (LCMS) in Asia, based in Hong Kong. In
this chaplaincy role, Pastor Kolb provides pastoral
care to the other LCMS personnel who serve
in this region of the world. Through Word and
Sacrament ministry, he supports and cares for
these individuals and their families as they live
out their lives on a daily basis.
Pastor Kolb is the son of Dolores and the late
Rev. Donald Kolb. He graduated from Concordia
University, Nebraska, Seward, Neb., and received
his Master of Divinity from Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, Mo. Before serving in Asia, Pastor
Kolb served as a pastor at Faith Lutheran Church, Corsicana, Texas (2000-2006) and Holy
Cross Lutheran Church, Vandalia, Ill. (2006-2014). He enjoys spending
time with his family.
Kristie is a native Texan. She received a bachelors degree in
elementary education from Concordia University, Nebraska. Like
Pastor Kolb, Kristie enjoys spending time with her family, as well
Hong Kong
as gardening and reading. She also finds joy in homeschooling
their children.
Please pray for Pastor and Kristie as they serve in Asia. Pray for the
entire Kolb family as they transition to life and ministry in Asia, learning
a new language and culture. Please pray they are filled with peace and are
strengthened during this transition time. Please pray they are used daily to lovingly minister to
the local people of Asia. Pray, too, for the LCMS personnel serving in this region with them that
they might find love and mercy in the Word and Sacrament ministry that is shared with them.
Let us give thanks that Pastor, Kristie and their family are serving in this part of the world!
