ATTACHMENT 4: SPECIFICATION CTS30W LIQUID MOUNTED PRIMARY SHOE PLATE SEAL,

COMPRESSION TYPE
The CTS30W is a liquid mounted primary compression shoe plate seal. The design has developed
itself into a leading design for internal and external floating roof seals. Its design is based on
compression plates pushing against the tank shell, backed up by a stainless steel spring. Behind
these plates a vapour barrier is installed which provides an excellent vapour tightness and ensures
a very effective sealing. The vapour barrier is made of antistatic PTFE, giving an almost universal
compatibility with all stored products, including 100% aromatics.
The stainless steel seal compression plates generate an optimal sealing against the tank shell
where the anti-static PTFE vapour barrier completely seals off the rim gap, generating a tight fitting
seal. This makes this seal a gas tight liquid mounted shoe seal construction. Normally a
CTS30W seal is designed for a nominal rim gap of 200 mm (8) with a +/- 5 deviation according to
API 650, but larger rim gaps can be bridged easily. CTS designs each individual seal for the floating
roof it will be fitted on. We consider the rim gap, product properties, tank specifications and many
other design aspects in this process.
As the seal design has no complex moving parts it will not encounter problems as a result of
corrosion or any other hazards affecting seal performance through time. Each CTS30 seal will be
specifically engineered and manufactured to fit the tank involved, making sure the seal will be able
to deal with both the particular dimensional and design aspects of the tank and external floating roof
it will be fitted on.
The CTS30W seal can be designed for different rims (horizontal or vertical) without any
modifications to the existing rim. The CTS30W is an excellent replacement for any existing primary
(shoe plate) seal. The CTS30W shoe plate seals are suitable for tanks with a liquid storage
temperature up to 60C. The CTS30W seal can be used in a wide range of stored products,
such as gasoline, crude oils and all common known hydrocarbons, including 100%
aromatics. The seal can be fitted to both vertical and horizontal rim connections, using the hole
pattern as originally provided on the tank involved.

The CTS30W seal will be designed according to API 650 and all other relevant (inter)national
requirements.

Wax scraper:
For crude oil service and other waxy products as required a wax scraper for scraping waxy
crude/product off the tank shell when the roof is travelling down (this to reduce any waxy built up on
the inside of the tank shell) is included. Apart from that the secondary seal will be designed to
minimize the scraping effect of the secondary seal, so minimal amounts of wax are scraped off on
top of the external floating roof, so cleaning of the rim area between the seal and a foam dam (if
present) will not be a concern.
Note: a CTS30W seal does require installing bumper bars to the steel floating roof to ensure
minimum rim gap distance is maintained under all circumstances.
Installation, man hours required:
Liquid mounted primary compression shoe plate seal as per specification:
CTS30W approximately 1 man hour per running meter of seal length
The optimal crew size is four to six (4 to 6) men. Adding or reducing persons will reduce efficiency
as a result the indicated number of man-hours will increase. These mentioned man-hours are net
man-hours for installation of the seal. Crew mobilization, safety instructions, safety-watch, waiting
hours, labour inefficiency etcetera are all excluded. We have assumed that installation staff will work
8 hours per day. Additionally we have assumed that there is direct access to the tank for unloading
of materials that compressed air, electricity and light are available and product safety precautions
for toxic products are assumed to be not required.
