Acknowledgement
Within many peoples helps finally I succeeded my general industrial training. So I like to give
my heartiest thanks for all of them. First I would like to thank for ICBT campus staff and the
lecture panel for giving me proper guidance in Quantity Surveying.
Next I would like give my thanks to Welivitiya Construction owner Mr. Govinda Welivitiya for
giving me this training opportunity and valuable advices in this training period because he and
his office staff give their fullest corporation to improve my knowledge.
Then I would like to thanks all of my friends because they give a lot of support to me my
academic and training period finally I would like to thank my loving parents because they give a
lot of help stay always in my back
And name and unknown persons who helping hand numerous ways to make this success.

Introduction
Having six months industrial training in a leading consultant firm in Sri Lanka is part
of our Higher National Diploma in Quantity Surveying.
Making details about company involved in mentioned in this report. Firm name, Firm

details, Firm location and organization chart are mentioned under the description of the project
and then experience gained, observation made and any problems encountered and solutions
found are described respectively.
To become successful quantity surveyor in the future need have this training period.

Construction means a process of building or erecting infrastructures. There are several types of
constructions found in the present construction industry. Generally a quantity surveyor is called
as the heart of the construction project as the work of construction is on the hand of the quantity
surveyors work. The role of a quantity surveyor is to manage the costs relating to building
projects.

Chapter 01
Profile of the Welivitiya Construction
The Managing Director Mr Govinda Welivitya & cost management is engaged with
Project management in construction projects. Company had successful completed
projects in construction of:

Four storage building in Mahinda College, Galle.


Project Value Rs. 200 million
Gov. buildings in Mathara Town
Project Value Rs. 550 million
Thelijjawila government farm buildings project

Also providing construction help to DSI new building factory site.

2.2.4 Working Environment
Mostly Im doing the site investigation, when I saw those drawings , technical words
used were new to me. And mostly Im only having theory knowledge in QS stream,
so mostly working in a site its became friendly environment to me and I could catch
up the procedure and practices in the works.

Chapter 03
Experience Gained
3.1 Preparing BOQ for Tender Call
Welivitiya Construction doing every type of construction, then its because our office
prepare that for our clients are has to get a that project value for build their dream
building.
3.2 Studying Contract documents

During my training period in I got opportunity to read the contract document to find out the
appropriate clauses to claim additional amounts. Because of that I went through only the general
and special conditions of contracts only. So with this I familiarized with the clauses and their
importance in applying when situation arise.
3.3 Site Surveying
In the training period I got a chance to use leveling machine & total station.
Because of that I really familiarizes those tools to use in any condition of in the site.

PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED AND SOLUTION
4.1 Lack of Knowledge in Rates
In preparation of estimate BOQ for the drawing, the major problem I faced was the knowledge regarding
the Sq. Ft. Rates for the work items in the plan. I had less knowledge in analyzed cost data to use the
preparation of BOQ. I get help from Mr. Samals who was very much familiar with such rates. By
preparing the BOQ I got knowledge about cost of major items in a building.

Conclusion
Industrial Training period is the most important period for everyone. In this period of time it is
the only chance to get trained under a senior quantity surveyor. So this time period allows a
trainee to understand and experience what it feels like to be a professional quantity surveyor.

Thus any student who pass out from this academic will definitely have confidence to work with
the experienced and competent people in the industry and will never suffer from any sort of fear,
excitement or inferiority complex about his/her professional skill as a qualified QS.
During the 6 month I understood how prudent QS are and tried to act that way. Im sure that Ive
succeeded in achieving that. Also it helped me to visualize various aspects of problems that I did
not come across.
During the training sessions, I also learnt how to more with people so that they get a favorable
image on you. So I think these collaboration and interaction skills will greatly help me when I
pass out and practice as a professional QS.
