Consumptionwillbelargelydrivenbyhigherhouseholdincomeduetoupgrading
intothemiddleclasses,leadingtorisingdemandforcalories,proteinandprocessed
foods.ThesefactorscombinedwithanincreaseinpercapitaGDPgrowth(>7%per
annum)willhavecompoundingimpactondemandforqualityandquantityoffood,in
ourcountry.
Therefore,itisnotsurprisingthatnutritionandfoodsecurityisoneofthemosttalked
abouttopicsinrecentyears.WhileIndianagriculturehasmadetremendousprogressto
achieveselfsufficiency,yield/hainmanycropsislowerthantheworldaverage.
AndthisiswhereChemistry,asanenabler,willhelpusaddressthedifficultiesofthe
future.Itisakeyenablerformanyotherindustriesandoffersinnovationsand
technologicalimprovements,inaprofitableandsustainablemanner.Chemistryholds
theanswerstothechallengesoftheagrisectorlikequalityoffood,yieldperhectare,
utilizationofresources,wastemanagement,climaticchallenges,fieldlossesfrompests,
weedsanddiseases,sustainable,safeproductsforhumansandenvironment.
