Ms. Shawns
Syllabus

But
Ms. Shawn, whats a
syllabus? Is it like a silly bus?

for Sixth Grade

Denition

Math

!
syllabus silbs
noun ( pl. -buses or -bi - b)
1 an outline of the subjects in a
course of study or teaching : there
isn't time to cover the syllabus | the history
syllabus.

Got it!
So whats in store for sixth grade math
Ms. Shawn?

I
have noticed that math is kind of
everywhereWhats this class going to
help me do in real life?

Great
question!

In
other words, a
syllabus is a piece of paper
that describes everything you
can expect to learn and
experience this year.

Im
glad you asked! In
sixth grade math we will
be learning to make sense of
real-world problems involving
math together.

Math IS
definitely EVERYWHERE.
When we start looking at the world
with a magnifying glass, we see that the
more math we know, the more we can discover
about the world.

From calculating the cost of a party, to predicting who

will win the presidential election, to knowing collegeacceptance rates at local high schools, math helps
us make sense of whats going on around us, and
math helps us make smart life decisions.

This all
sounds pretty good. The problem is,
sometimes I just feel like math is a big competition,
and Im never the winner.

Wait.
Am I hearing you right? Im allowed
to make

This
is a really common feeling. Did you
know that your brain is a muscle? The more you
challenge yourself by asking questions, making
mistakes and by figuring out how and why something is
the way it is, youre making your brain muscle
stronger.

Absolutely!
The only way to get
smarter in math is to be curious
and willing to make mistakes. Its only
by uncovering our misconceptions (the
mistakes in our thinking) that we are
able to discover the truth.

6th Grade
Learning Targets

Hm.. I
never thought about it like that. Okay, Ill
be making a LOT of mistakes in math this year
then..How about grading Ms. Shawn?

The
grade you earn in this
class will reflect how much you
have learned. The more you pay
attention, ask questions, and try out new
ways of thinking, the more you will learn.
Overall, the grade you earn will
demonstrate how close you have
gotten to mastering the learning
targets of the course.

Its
