La prisin injusta de los Cinco ya dura ms de 15 aos;

no una, ni cien, sino millones de cintas amarillas han
de amarrarse a todo soporte imaginable y al corazn
del pueblo estadounidense para lograr su liberacin.
S, tenemos que traerlos a casa juntando todas las fuerzas de bien; con los que conocen a alguien a quien
comunicarle este clamor dentro de Estados Unidos; continuando el lobby en Washington; con la pluma de los
periodistas honestos, con la Solidaridad Internacional
llena de colores.
Pensemos que a los Cinco les debemos la sobrevida;
pensemos que cuando nosotros vemos esta revista y ponemos la cabeza en la almohada, cuando terminan los
encuentros solidarios, ellos quedan detrs del chirrido
de las rejas,tachando palitos que cruzan un almanaque imaginario detrs de la pared; allanando el pasillo
entre el telfono y su celda, con sus propios dolores, resistiendo dignamente.
Fernando va a cumplir tambin hasta el ltimo minuto de la injusta condena, pero vamos a permitir que
as ocurra con Antonio y Ramn? y el ms preso de los
Cinco?

The unjust imprisonment of the Five has already lasted
15 years. Not one, or a hundred, but millions of yellow
ribbons shall be tied to any imaginable support and to
the hearts of the American people, in order to obtain
their freedom.
Yes! We have to bring them back home, by joining
together all the forces of good, with those who know
someone to whom to convey this clamor within the
United States; by continuing to lobby in Washington;
with honest journalists, with colorful International
Solidarity.
Let us think that We owe our lives to the Cuban Five.
Let us think that when we take a look at this magazine
and we rest our heads upon the pillow, when the solidarity meetings come to an end; tthey will remain behind bars, scratching out little sticks that cross an ima-

pains, worthily resisting.
Fernando will be serving his unjust conviction up to
the last minute. But, are we going to allow the same

them all?
We do not resign ourselves. Let us stir up heaven and
earth for Obama to sign their release. The truths proving
the innocence of the Five can fit into 140 characters.

Un mensaje de amor multiplicado envi Cuba al noble pueblo

de Estados Unidos cuando toda
la Isla se cubri de lazos y cintas
amarillas, aludiendo a la tradicin norteamericana de utilizar
ese smbolo cuando la familia espera ansiosa, plena de esperanza y
fe, a un ser querido.
Los cubanos vistieron la Isla de
ese color, en los ms increbles lugares, con el propsito de dar a
conocer que Cuba espera a cuatro
de sus hijos, encarcelados injustamente hace ms de 15 aos en
EE.UU..
Los norteamericanos desconocen las escandalosas irregulari-

dades que viciaron el juicio de

Gerardo Hernndez, Antonio
Guerrero, Ramn Labaino, Fernando Gonzlez y Ren Gonzlez, el nico del grupo conocido
internacionalmente como Los
Cinco- que est de regreso en la
Patria luego de cumplir su inmerecida condena y parte de la adicional de libertad supervisada.
Ren, convertido en inspirador
de la campaa por la libertad de
sus compaeros aun encarcelados, llam al pueblo de Cuba a
pintar de amarillo la esperanza,
idea que hizo suya tambin el
movimiento internacional de solidaridad con la causa.

Cuba sent a multiplied love message to the noble people of the

United States, when the entire
island covered itself up with yellow ribbons, in open reference
to the North American tradition
of using this symbol when family
awaits a loved one with hope and
faith.
Cubans dressed that color in the
most unbelievable places, with
the purpose of making known
that Cuba is waiting for four of its
children, unjustly imprisoned for
over 15 years in the United States.
Americans do not know of the
scandalous irregularities that
corrupted the trial of Gerardo

Hernndez, Antonio Guerrero, Ramn Labaino, Fernando

Gonzlez and Ren Gonzlez.
The last is the only one of the
group, internationally known as
The Five, who is already back in
the Motherland, after serving an
unjust sentence and a part of the
supervised release in the city of
Miami.
Ren, who has become an inspiration for the freedom campaign
for his comrades still in prison,
called on the people of Cuba to
paint hope in yellow, an idea that
the international movement in
solidarity with their cause, also
turned into its own.
On arriving September 12th,
2013, 15 years after their arrest,

an outburst of love and color

was unleashed in every corner
of the country. The American
people will understand our message which is to help us bring
out brothers back home. If the
Americans knew of this outrage,
they would not allow it. These
were some of the peoples expressions out in the streets.
This is because the Cuban people
know that the release of Gerardo,
Fernando, Antonio and Ramon
can be accomplished if the American public opinion knew the
truth about the case that has been
censored in the US mass media.
The Five who were declared as
Heroes of the Republic in Cubafought against terrorism and de-

fended life. They were convicted

of crimes that they did not commit, without a shred of evidence,
by a threatened Jury, in the midst
of a hostile environment created
by government-paid Miami journalists, who repeatedly told their
lies, with incredible violations of
the laws and Constitution of the
United States. They defeated the
slanders and dishonesty.
The Cuban people know that
the Americans have a democratic vocation, but they just ignore
many truths. This is the reason
for this message, from heart to
heart, from people to people, for
humanitarian reasons, for the
triumph of justice, freedom for
our brothers!

ENTREGA A LA HUMANIDAD

EN LA LUCHA CONTRA EL TERRORISMO

Mensaje al pueblo estadounidense
En fecha tan lejana como el 17 de
junio de 2001 Los Cinco enviaron
un mensaje al pueblo de Estados
Unidos, una declaracin de principios: Nos declaramos totalmente inocentes. Nos reconforta el deber cumplido con nuestro pueblo
y nuestra patria. Ms de 12 aos
despus aun el pueblo estadounidense desconoce que en su pas permanecen encarcelados cuatro hombres inocentes, por cuya libertad se
levantan voces en todos los continentes. Reproducimos fragmentos
de aquel mensaje:
Cinco cubanos leales a su pueblo, que durante 33 meses y 5
das hemos soportado el riguroso
encierro en las celdas de una prisin de otro pas cuyas autoridades son hostiles al nuestro, y donde hemos sido juzgados despus
de un largo y escandaloso proceso
mediante procedimientos, mtodos y objetivos de carcter absolutamente polticos y bajo un
verdadero diluvio de propaganda
malintencionada y fraudulenta,
hemos decidido dirigirnos directamente al pueblo norteamericano para hacerle conocer que hemos sido vctimas de una colosal
injusticia.
Se nos acus de poner en peligro la seguridad de Estados Unidos, imputndonos numerosos
cargos, e incluso delitos como
la conspiracin para asesinar los
que, por su incuestionable falsedad, no fueron ni podrn ser probados, y por los cuales podemos

ser sancionados a decenas de aos

de prisin y a cadenas perpetuas.
Un jurado constituido en Miami, y esto lo explica por s mismo,
nos declar culpables de todos los
cargos que se nos imputaban.
Somos patriotas cubanos que
nunca tuvimos la intencin de
daar los valores del pueblo norteamericano, ni su integridad; sin
embargo, nuestro pequeo pas,
que heroicamente ha sobrevivido durante 40 aos a agresiones
y amenazas a su seguridad, a planes de subversin, sabotajes y a
la desestabilizacin interna, tiene
derecho a defenderse de sus enemigos, que utilizan el territorio
norteamericano para planear,
organizar y financiar actos terroristas violando las propias leyes
internas que los prohben.
Tenemos derecho a la paz, al respeto a nuestra soberana y a nuestros intereses ms sagrados.
Estuvimos en este pas durante
ms de cuatro aos y siempre nos
preguntamos por qu no podemos vivir en paz ambos pueblos,
por qu intereses mezquinos de
una extrema derecha, incluidos
grupos y organizaciones terroristas de origen cubano, pueden
enrarecer la atmsfera entre dos
pueblos que, por su cercana geogrfica, estn en posibilidad de
mantener relaciones de respeto e
igualdad.

Son los grupos terroristas de
origen cubano y sus mentores

econmicos y polticos norteamericanos los que erosionan la

credibilidad de este pas, los que
dan a esta nacin una imagen de
salvajismo y a sus instituciones
un comportamiento inconsecuente, prejuiciado y poco serio,
incapaz de conducirse con cordura y sensatez ante los problemas
que tienen que ver con Cuba.

Como resultado de estas agresiones en nuestro pas, entre los
aos 1959 y 1999, se provocaron
3 478 muertos y 2 099 incapacitados, as como un elevado costo
material.

Nunca hicimos nada por dinero
y siempre vivimos modesta y humildemente, a la altura del sacrificio que realiza nuestro pueblo.
Nos gui un fuerte sentimiento de solidaridad humana, amor
a nuestra patria y desprecio por
todo lo que no respete la dignidad del hombre.
Los acusados en esta causa no
nos arrepentimos de lo que hemos realizado para defender a
nuestro pas. Nos declaramos
totalmente inocentes. Nos reconforta el deber cumplido con
nuestro pueblo y nuestra patria.
Nuestras familias comprenden el
alcance de las ideas que nos han
guiado y sentirn orgullo por esta
entrega a la humanidad en la lucha contra el terrorismo y por la
independencia de Cuba.

Message to the american people

As far back as June 17th, 2001,
the Five sent a message to the people
of the United States, a statement
of principles: We are completely
innocent. We are satisfied we have
fulfilled our duty to our people and
our homeland. More than 12
years after, the American people do
not know that in their country four
innocent men remain imprisoned,
whose freedom is claimed by thousands voices in all continents. We
reproduce excerpts of that message:
We are five loyal Cubans, who
for 33 months and five days have
endured a severe imprisonment
in the jails of a nation where hostility against our own is obvious
with its authorities. Then, after a
long and infamous trial directed
by manifestly political objectives, methods and procedures and
overwhelmed by a real deluge of
maliciously concocted propaganda, we have decided to address
the American people to let them
know the truth, that we are the
victims of a terrible injustice.
We have been accused of endangering the security of the United
States and indicted on numerous
charges, including crimes such
as conspiracy to commit murder
that could not, and cannot, be
proven for they are false but for
which we could be sentenced to
dozens of years of imprisonment
and even to life sentences.
A body of Miami jurors, and
this explains it all, declared us
guilty of all charges. But we are

just Cuban patriots and it was never our intent to cause any harm
to neither the values nor the integrity of the American people.
Our tiny nation, that has heroically survived four decades
of aggressions and threats to its
national security, of subversive
plans, sabotages and destabilization, has every right to defend
itself from its enemies who keep
using the U.S. territory to plan,
organize and finance terrorist actions breaking your own laws in
the process.
Our country is also entitled to
peace, respect for its sovereignty
and for our most sacred interests.
In the four years that we have
spent in this country, we have never stopped wondering why is it
that our two peoples cannot live in
peace and how is it possible that
the mean interests of the extreme
right, including terrorist groups
and organizations made up by
Cuban Americans, can strain relations between two peoples that are
so close geographically and that
could easily maintain relations based on respect and equality.

They are the terrorist groups
made up by Cuban Americans
and their political and economic mentors in America who are
gnawing away at the credibility
of this country, giving this nation
an appearance of ruthlessness and
misleading its institutions to an
inconsistent, prejudiced and erra-

tic behavior. They are the same

individuals who forestall a serious
and sensitive approach to Cuba
related issues.

The result of such aggressions
against Cuba is that 3478 people
were killed and 2099 were maimed between 1959 and 1999,
notwithstanding very costly material losses.

We have never done anything
for money. We have always lived modestly and acted humbly,
living up to the sacrifices of our
own people.
We have always been moved by a
strong sentiment of human solidarity, love for our homeland and contempt for that which goes against
the dignity of the human person.
The defendants in this trial are
in no way repentant of what we
have done to defend our country.
We declare ourselves non guilty
and simply take comfort in the
fact that we have honored our
duty to our people and our homeland. Our loved ones understand the depth of the ideas that
guide us and they will take pride
in our sacrifices for Humanity in
this struggle against terrorism and
for the independence of Cuba.

EE.UU. transmitido en ocasin de la II Jornada en
Washington por la libertad de Los Cinco, 2013.
Estuve en los Estados Unidos durante 20 aos. Realic los estudios de mi carrera en ese pas. Tengo amigos maravillosos. Fui de gira con la compaa de ballet

American Ballet Theater por muchos aos. Me convert en Prima Ballerina. S que el pueblo de los Estados
Unidos siento que ustedes me recuerdan un poco
Estas palabras se las dedico a todos ustedes. Desde
lo profundo de mi corazn les quiero hablar, como
usualmente hago. En su pas hay cinco personas
que han permanecido encerrados en crceles por 15
aos, uno de ellos ya est aqu, pero los dems estn
all. Han permanecido cumpliendo sentencia por
15 aos debido a algo que ustedes comprendern
porque los conozco a todos, conozco su manera de
pensar, de que les gusta el cumplimiento de la justicia, les gusta que todo permanezca bien claro, pues
as es el pueblo de los Estados Unidos que conozco.
Les hablo a todos, porque estoy convencida de que
todos aman la justicia
Estos hombres todo lo que hicieron fue salvar
nuestras vidas, porque ellos desvelaban los actos
terroristas de las bombas que nuestros enemigos
plantaban, y muchos estamos ahora vivos debido a
que ellos descubrieron donde seran plantadas las

Message by Prima Ballerina Assoluta Alicia Alonso to
the American people on the occasion of the 2nd Sessions
for the Release of the Cuban Five in Washington DC
in 2013.
I lived in the United States for 20 years. I did studies of my career in that country. I have wonderful
friends. I went ontournes with the American Ballet
Theater for many years. I became Prima Ballerina. I
know that the people of the United States I feel
that you remember me a little
I dedicate these words to all of you. I want to speak
to you from the bottom of my heart, as I usually do.
There are five persons in your country who have remained locked up in different prisons for 15 years.
One of them is here, but the rest are still there.
They have remained serving their sentences for 15
years, now, because of something that I know you

will understand, because I know you all, I know

your way of thinking, that you like justice to be served, you like everything to be very clear, for thus is
the people of the United States that I know. I speak
to all of you because I am convinced that you all
love justice.
All these men did was to save our lives, because
they revealed the terrorist acts of the bombs that
our enemies planted; and many of us are now alive
because they uncovered the places where the bombs
were to be planted by the enemy. The Five did not
mean to do any harm to anybody
() We are alive because these five persons saved us.
That is why we call them heroes, because they exposed
their own lives for saving the lives of the whole of the
Cuban people. Please, let them return to us! They
deserve that. Please, I beg you, please. Thank you.

The presentations of the book by Canadian writer

Stephen Kimber, telling the story of five Cuban antiterrorists arrested in the United States since 1998,
have aroused the interest of the audience in that
country.
While organized by the International Committee for the Liberation of the Cuban Five, Kimber
made a tour through the countrys East Coast, in
order to make known his work, What Lies Across
the Sea-The True Story of the Cuban Five. What
Lies Across the Water documents the saga of 15
years of lock up of the Cuban antiterrorist fighters
in United States Prisons.
In his introductory words to the launching of his
work, in the well-known Busboys and Poets community cultural facility, Kimber remarked that he
did not know about the story, until almost by chance he began to get deeper into it.

yellow ribbon on me, too. I defend the cause of the
Five.

about which the Americans have but scarce access:

Las presentaciones del libro del escritor canadiense

Stephen Kimber que cuenta la historia de cinco antiterroristas cubanos arrestados en Estados Unidos
desde 1998, han despertado en ese pas el inters de
la audiencia.
Organizado por el Comit Internacional por la Libertad de los Cinco, Kimber realiz una gira por
la costa este del pas para dar a conocer su obra Lo
que hay del otro lado del Mar- La Verdadera Historia de los Cinco Cubanos. What Lies Across the
Water... documenta la saga de 15 aos de encierro
en prisiones de Estados Unidos de los luchadores
antiterroristas cubanos.
En palabras introductorias al lanzamiento de su
obra, en la conocida instalacin cultural comunitaria Busboys and Poets, Kimber coment que desconoca de la historia, hasta que casi por azar se fue
adentrando en ella.
Es una historia fascinante, dijo el autor al destacar que no solo conoce de la historia de los Cinco,
sino que en estos momentos llevo tambin conmigo una cinta amarilla, defiendo la causa de los
Cinco.
La obra del profesor Kimber es, a decir del intelectual cubano Ricardo Alarcn, el libro ms completo disponible en idioma ingls sobre un tema al que
los norteamericanos tienen escaso acceso: el caso de
Gerardo, Ramn, Antonio, Fernando y Ren, (...)
Una historia que ha permanecido sepultada durante

Mirta conmueve a quienes la

escuchan. Es una mezcla de dulzura, dolor, coraje y sobre todo
amor, cuando habla de su hijo
Tony, o ms exactamente, cuando
evoca tambin a Gerardo, Ramn,
Fernando y Ren, todos son mis
hijos, por quienes lucha constantemente, sobreponindose a
algn que otro momento de desnimo.
Ms de una vez, estremecida
por la angustia, en medio de una
exposicin del caso, su voz se
quiebra aflorando las lgrimas, y
ha pedido disculpas al auditorio,
con humildad, ustedes perdonen
pero una madre tiene momentos
de ansiedad, de sentir impotencia
por no poder hacer nada. Y de
inmediato se repone lanzndose
con renovada fuerza a la campaa
contra la colosal injusticia de que
han sido vctimas Los Cinco.
Mirta es apasionada, pareciera
no tener fin la fuente de su energa para la lucha por la verdad.
Sufre y se desespera, pero no vacila al sostenerse en medio de la
batalla hasta que todos estn de
regreso. Es admirable esta mujer
amorosa y sincera que vive angustiada, amenazada por el tiempo.
Ya cumpl 81 aos, comenc esta
lucha con 66 sin pensar nunca que
pudiera pasar tanto tiempo

de solidaridad
La relacin de Mirta con Tony,
suma al amor gigantesco de una
madre por su hijo, una identificacin insondable, de unidad
espiritual, artstica, de pureza inabarcable que los envuelve a los
dos. Y ese amor infinito y hermoso ella lo transmite con sencillez a
los amigos de diversas partes del
mundo, que se emocionan y la
acompaan.
Todos quieren abrazarla luego
de escuchar sus palabras que le
brotan del alma, teniendo una
mirada acariciadora para cada
uno de los que la siguen - y son
millones-, una mirada de agradecimiento y cario. El respaldo y
el respeto hacia ella, al igual que
para con todos los familiares de
los Hroes, crece en el mundo.
Pero es en Estados Unidos donde
urge divulgar la realidad, llegar a
la opinin pblica para que conozca la crueldad que ha llevado
tras las rejas durante ms de 15
aos a hombres inocentes, honestos, sensibles.
En un encuentro en La Habana
en 2013 con Pastores por la Paz,
de EE.UU., Mirta les deca: saber
que estn mas all de la frontera,
que pueden llegar al pueblo de
EE.UU. para denunciar la injusticia, llena de ilusiones esta tarde

Entonces les dijo que hara todo
lo que estuviera a su alcance para
lograr la liberacin de los Hroes.
Para todos nosotros que hemos
sido testigos de las relaciones entre Cuba y Estados Unidos en
los ltimos 52 aos, esperamos
que en adicin a la justicia para
Los Cinco comience un nuevo
momento en las relaciones entre ambos gobiernos. Es nuestra
mayor esperanza que se acabe el
bloqueo econmico (impuesto
por EE.UU. a la Isla) y comience
la normalizacin de las relaciones
entre los dos pases, sealaba
Danny en una visita a La Habana
en 2013, y remarcaba: la injusticia con Los Cinco tiene que ser
contada.
Danny Glover, junto al laureado
cineasta y acadmico estadounidense Sal Landau recientemente fallecido e incansable defensor de la causa de Los Cinco-,
visitaron ms de una vez a Gerardo en la crcel, llevndole el
aliento de hermanos.
Mirta domina todo el entramado del viciado proceso judicial de
Los Cinco: Con nuestros hijos
se han violado sus derechos legales, constitucionales, los derechos de la familia, de los nios y

de la mujer, y con tristeza repite

Quince aos es mucho tiempo,
los hijos de ellos que eran nios
ya se han casado, el nico nio
en las familias ahora es el nieto
de Ren, el que afortunadamente
est incorporado a esta lucha ya
en su hogar.
Explica a los amigos, en Cuba y
en el exterior, que en febrero de
2014 debe terminar su injusto
encarcelamiento Fernando, el
siguiente en salir sera mi hijo,
que debe cumplir en 2017 y cinco aos de libertad supervisada.
! Cuando pienso en eso lo veo
tan cruel y tan injusto! pero no
es el momento de llorar sino de
luchar.
Despus Ramn saldra en

2024, demasiado tarde, pero lo

que ms nos preocupa es Gerardo, se han ensaado con l, tiene
que cumplir dos cadenas perpetuas ms 15 aos! y para mayor
condena le niegan la visa a su esposa, le niegan ese consuelo.
Est denunciado el pago del gobierno a periodistas antes, durante y despus del juicio para mentir, nunca dijeron la verdad para
poner a la poblacin en contra de
Los Cinco, enfatiza.
El combate de nuestra lucha es
a diario. Para m, un da en que
no hay lucha es un da perdido y
me hace dao, porque el pensamiento se entristece, porque uno
se desanima. Que me llamen al
combate a diario es retroalimentarme, darme energa y siempre
estar rodeada de amigos, entonces eso me hace sentir que no estoy sola, ha expresado.
Y est convencida de que solamente la unidad de todos por que
triunfe la justicia, y la presin al
presidente Obama para que los
indulte, har que sean liberados
Los Cinco.
Llamamos a todos los amigos a
lograr una gran montaa humana
de solidaridad, como se hizo con
Mandela y Angela Davis. Ese es
el pedido de Mirta.

Mirta moves all those who listen

to her. It is a mixture of sweetness, pain, courage and, above
all, love, when she speaks about
her son, Tony, or, more exactly,
when she also recalls Gerardo,
Ramn, Fernando and Ren
they are all my children-, for
whom she constantly fights, overcoming one or another moment
of discouragement.
More than once, shuddering in
anguish, in the middle of a presentation of the case, her voice
breaks up allowing tearsto flow;
and she has humbly asked the
public to be excused: Please,
forgive me, but a mother has moments of anxiety, of feeling impotent for not being able to do
anything. And at once she pulls
herself together and dives with
renewed strength into the campaign against the colossal injustice that The Five have been made
victims of.
Mirta is passionate. It would
seem as if the source of her energy to fight for truth had no end.
She suffers and despairs, but does
not hesitate when standing in the
middle of the battle, until all of
them be back. She is admirable,
this loving and sincere woman
who lives in anguish, threatened
by time, she is. I am already

81 years old. I began this struggle when I was 66, and never
thought that so much time could
go by
Mirtas relation with Tony goes
way beyond one mothers gigantic love for her child. It is an
inscrutable identification of spiritual, artistic, unembraceable purity that wraps them both. And
with simplicity she conveys such
infinite and beautiful love to the
friends from different parts of the
world, whichfeel touched, and
join her.
They all want to hug her after
listening to her words that sprout
from her soul, with a caressing
glance for each one of those who
follow her and those are millions- a glance of thankfulness
and love. The backing and respect for her the same as for all
the relatives of the Heroes- increase, the world over. But it is in
the United States where it is urgent to spread about the truth, to
reach the public opinion for it to
learn of the cruelty that has taken
innocent, honest, sensitive men,
for over 15 years, behind bars.
At a meeting in Havana in 2013
with Pastors for Peace, from the
United States, Mirta was telling
them: To know that you are
beyond the border and that you
may reach the people of the United States to denounce the injus-

tice, fills this afternoon with cherishing hopes () Within each

one of you is the hope that between all of you together, you can
defeat injustice; you are very brave people; full of love; fully aware
of defending a fair cause
The meetings with American
actor Danny Glover are amongst
the many exchanges which have
succeeded one to the other. With
how much love he greets The
Fives mothers and wives! The

kept his word since he met them,
10 years ago, in the World Social Forum held in Porto Alegre,
Brazil. He then told them that he
would do everything within his
power to accomplish the Heroes
liberation.
To all of us who have witnessed
the relations between Cuba and
the United States for the last 52
years, we hope that, in addition
to justice for The Five, a new
moment should start for the relations between both governments.
It is our greatest hope that the
economic blockade (imposed to
the Island by the United States)
comes to an end, and that the
normalization of relations between the two countries begins,
Danny pointed out during a visit
he paid to Havana in 2013. And
he remarked: The injustice with
The Five must be told.
Danny Glover, together with
North American prize-winning
moviemaker and academician
Saul Landau recently deceased,
an untiring champion of The
Fives cause-, more than once visited Gerardo in jail, taking to him
their brotherly encouragement.

Mirta masters the whole framework of The Fives corrupted judicial proceedings: All
legal and constitutional rights,
family rights, the childrens and
womens, have been violated with
our sons. She then sadly repeats,
Fifteen years is a lot of time.
Their children, who used to be
kids, have already got married.
The only actual small boy in the
families is Rens grandson, Ren
himself having luckily joined the
struggle, as he is already home.
She explains to the friends,
whether in Cuba or abroad, that
Fernando ought to finish his unjust imprisonment in February
2014. The next one to come
out would be my son, who will be
due in 2017 plus five more years
of supervised release. When I
think about that, I find it so cruel
and unfair! But now is not the
time for crying, but for fighting.
Afterwards, Ramn would
come out in 2024. Too late,
but whom we are most concerned about is Gerardo. They have
glutted their cruelty on him. He
is to serve two life sentences plus
15 years! And even for a larger
punishment, they refuse his wife

the entry visa. They deny to him

that consolation.
The payment of the government
for journalists to lie before, during and after the trial, has been
reported. They never told the
truth, so as to confront the population against The Five, she
stresses.
The fight of our struggle is
waged out upon a daily basis. To
me, one day without any fight is a
lost day, and it hurts me, because
thoughts become saddening, because one gets discouraged. To
be called into battle every day is
to feed myself back, it gives me
energy and it means to be always
surrounded by friends. Then,
that makes me feel that I am not
alone, she has said.
And she is convinced that only
the unity of all for justice to
triumph, and pressure on President Obama for him to pardon
them, will make The Five be set
free.
We call on all the friends to
make one huge human mountain
of solidarity, as was made with
Mandela and Angela Davis.

La causa de Los Cinco reuni en la noche del 12 de septiembre de 2013 fecha que marc los 15 aos de encarcelamiento
injusto de Los Cinco- en la Tribuna Antiimperialista Jos
Mart, a ms de 40 artistas y miles de habaneros, en un
abrazo cultural por el regreso de los Hroes. All Ren se dirigi
a todas las personas de buena voluntad de todo el mundo,
y se escucharon los mensajes que desde la prisin enviaron
sus compaeros Gerardo, Fernando, Ramn y Antonio.

In the evening of September 12th, 2013 the date that marked 15 years of unjust imprisonment of the Cuban Five-,
their cause gathered over 40 artists and thousands of Havana residents at the Jos Mart Anti-imperialist Tribune,
in a cultural embrace for the Heroes return. There, Ren
addressed all the persons of good will from all over the
world, and the messages sent from prison by his comrades
Gerardo, Fernando, Ramn and Antonio were heard.

Ren: Les debemos y nos debemos el

traerlos de vuelta a casa
Cubanas y cubanos; personas de buena voluntad de
todo el mundo:
Cuatro hijos de esta tierra languidecen en prisiones
norteamericanas por el crimen de defender la vida
humana, por resguardar nuestro derecho a la tranquilidad y a la existencia. Sus voces nos llegarn hoy desde sus encierros y los harn libres de odios y rencores.
Nos traern esa alegra de vivir que les hizo asumir
este sacrificio en primera instancia. Nos recordarn
que sus espritus no pueden ser quebrados por todo el
encono que el gobierno ms poderoso de la historia
humana ha dejado caer sobre ellos. Se les castiga con
tal saa porque -parafraseando a un poeta- emiten
una luz que para sus acusadores resulta insoportable.
Ellos no vinieron de otro planeta. En estas calles
dieron sus primeros pasos y disfrutaron de la maravilla de sus primeras letras. Absorbieron aqu de sus
padres el alma y la historia de nuestros antepasados.
Aqu amaron y fueron amados. Fueron, como muchos de ustedes, jvenes que aqu gustaron de un
concierto. Slo que, cuando fue preciso, dieron el
paso para proteger todo eso, y cuando fue an ms
preciso dieron a sus fiscales una leccin moral imperdonable. Y ha sido por eso todava ms preciso
que soporten todo ese rencor; pero lo han hecho con
altura, con el corazn ligero, con una sonrisa en los
labios en los momentos ms difciles.
Gerardo, Ramn, Antonio y Fernando son esta noche los presos de nuestra felicidad; pero pudieron ser
hoy cualquiera de ustedes tal y como cualquiera de
ustedes pudo estar en su lugar. Ellos vibrarn con cada

nota de este concierto. Junto a los corazones de ustedes los suyos palpitarn a la magia de la msica. La
felicidad de ustedes ser la felicidad de ellos, porque
ha sido y es esa felicidad alimento de sus almas, fuente
de su resistencia y razn primera de su sacrificio.
Pero siguen presos. Privados de todo lo que es suyo.
Arrancados de entre nosotros por un odio irracional.
Y, aunque ellos nos convocan a la felicidad, no debemos olvidarlo porque de ella siguen siendo los presos.
Y cuando la msica cese y regresemos a la cotidianeidad, no podemos nunca dejar de pensar que les
debemos y nos debemos el traerlos de vuelta a casa,
y nos debemos, todos, el regalo de ese enorme concierto con que habremos de celebrar su regreso a la
libertad.

of that huge concert with which we shall celebrate
Cubans; persons of good will from all over the world: their return to freedom.
Four sons of this land languish in American pri- Thank you, very much.
sons for the sole crime of defending human life,
for safeguarding our right to peace and existence.
Their voices will reach us today from their reclusions and will make them free of hatred and hard
feelings. They will bring to us that joy of living
that made them take on this sacrifice, in the first
place. They will remind us that their spirits cannot
be broken not even by all the spite that the most
powerful government in human history has heavily
dropped upon them. They are being punished with
such viciousness because paraphrasing a poet- they
cast a kind of light that turns to be unbearable to
their accusers.
They did not come from another planet. They
gave their first steps and enjoyed the wonder of
their first letters in these same streets. From their
parents, here they absorbed the soul and the history
of our ancestors. Here they loved and were loved.
They were just like many of you- youngsters who

to the Motherland
Revolutionary greetings to all those present in the
Jos Mart Anti- imperialist Tribune:
Three lustrums of a colossal injustice have not been
enough to break down our resistance will.
I can assure you on my behalf and that of my
comrades, that there will be nothing capable of accomplishing such a purpose.
The heroic example of a revolutionary people resisting for over half a century before the most powerful empire in history, is the main source feeding our
fighting spirit, our decision to resist and our confidence in the return to the Motherland.
Throughout all these years we have been aware of
the restless struggle of Cubans, for justice to be served so that we can go back to the lap of the people
that we belong to.
You are meeting today in this Dignity Tribune,
in which so many transcendental moments of our
countrys recent history have been lived, to commemorate 15 years of our imprisonment and to demand the end of the injustice.
Your voices reach us today as they have symbolically reached us throughout all these years. Your
solidarity wraps us in a human blanket and urges
us to fight.
The voice of a people outraged in all justice, together with that of hundreds of thousands of friends
around the world, cannot be silenced, their message
cannot be ignored.
Sooner or later the bars keeping us captive will have
to open for us to return to our beloved Motherland.

de un hombre no se compra
Queridas hermanas y hermanos:
Han sido 15 largos aos de injusticia, de huecos
infames, de cadenas y esposas que laceran la piel.
Han sido 15 aos alejados de la Patria, de nuestro
pueblo, de nuestra familia.
Quince aos en que nuestros hijos se han hecho
adultos y en el rostro de nuestras esposas y familiares se muestra ya el paso implacable del tiempo.
Quince aos en que nos ha dolido ver partir a algunos de nuestros seres queridos y hermanos entraables.
Pero tambin es importante decir que han sido 15
aos de pelea fiel y aguerrida, tiempo que ha servido
para demostrar una vez ms que Cuba ni se rinde,
ni se arrodilla, ni mucho menos traiciona, que el
honor de un hombre y el decoro de un hombre no
se compra ni con toda la riqueza del universo.
Con esa misma conviccin de nuestros mambises,
de toda nuestra historia patria, continuaremos peleando hasta la victoria final.
Gracias a todo nuestro pueblo, a nuestros lderes y
a todos los hermanos del mundo por su compaa
combativa, fiel y eterna.

AT THE TRIBUNE OF DIGNITY

Dear brothers and sisters:

They have been 15 year of injustice, of infamous
holes, of skin lacerating chains and cuffs.
They have been 15 years away from the Motherland, from our people, our family.
Fifteen years in which our children have grown
adults and the inexorable passage of time can be
noticed on the faces of our wives and relatives.
Fifteen years in which it has hurt us to see depart some
of our dear ones and very close brothers and sisters.
But it is also important to say that they have been
15 years of faithful and fierce fight, a time that has
served to prove once again that Cuba neither surrenders, or kneels down or, least of all, betrays;
that a mans honor and a mans decorum cannot be
bought not even with all the riches of the universe.
With the same conviction of our mambises (rebels from Cubas first uprising <1868>, for Independence War), of all of our Motherlands history,
Danny Rivera
we shall continue to fight until final victory.
Thanks to all of our people, to our leaders and to
all the brothers and sisters from the world, for their Gerardo: Algn da Los Cinco
estaremos junto a ustedes
fighting, faithful and eternal company.

podrn hacer mella en nuestra certeza de que algn

This is Gerardo, from Victorville. I warn you, California desert.
A greeting to all of you present there, and to our
people in general, and the gratefulness from The
Five, to those who have been participating of and
organizing this and other activities, on the occasion
of the 15th anniversary of our arrest.
Many thanks, too, for those who have brought in
their art in a solidary gesture. We need that, and we
are happy to know that we may count on you,
It is said very easily: 15 years. I am sure that be-

sides Ivette, there will be other fifteen-year-old girls

among those present, who were born in the year in
which we Five were deprived of our freedom.
A lot of water has passed under the bridge since
then; but do not have the least doubt that the years
have not been nor will be able to have any effect
on our certainty that, someday, we Five will be together with you, together with our people, right
there in that same Tribune.
Again, thanks to all of you, and count always on
our loyalty.
A tight hug, and let the music play, because this
battle has to be waged out with a lot of enthusiasm.

De frente a tu mirada he vuelto a amanecer.

Sin miedo a mi dolor sano mi herida
brutal e injusto castigo
Queridos compatriotas;
Queridos amigos solidarios:
Ustedes bien lo saben, hoy es distinto, hoy tenemos
muchos amigos en todas partes del mundo que conocen nuestra situacin, que conocen nuestro caso
y que nos apoyan e impulsan en todo momento en
esta larga batalla por nuestra libertad. Pero hace 15
aos, tras nuestro arresto, nosotros fuimos aislados
totalmente y se nos encerr en aquellas celdas del llamado Hueco. All comenc a escribir poemas; no saba si realmente eran poemas, pero esa fue mi forma
ms eficaz de resistir aquel brutal e injusto castigo.
Hoy yo quiero compartir con ustedes algunos de
esos poemas que con un lpiz muy pequeo y con
un alma llena de inocencia escrib en el mes de enero de 1999, durante aquellos largos 17 meses en
confinamiento solitario.

Tomando en tu jardn la ms querida

Flor llena de tu aroma y de tu ser.
De frente a ti hoy sigo caminando;
Con paso firme el sol cubre mi huella.
Cun hermoso es poder seguirte amando,
Multiplicar mi amor por cada estrella.

Dear countrymen;
Dear solidary friends:
You all know well: Today it is different; all over
the world, today we have many friends who know
of our situation, they know of our case and they
support us and encourage us at all times in this long
battle for our freedom. But 15 years ago, just after
our arrest, we were totally isolated and we were locked up in those cells of the so called Hole. I began
to write poems in there. I did not know whether
they were really poems. But that was my most efficacious way to endure that brutal and unjust punishment.
Today, I want to share with you some of those poems that with a very short pencil and a soul
full of innocence I came to write in the month of
January, 1999, during those long 17 months of solitary confinement.
The Truth
In front of your gaze I woke up again,
Fearless of my pain, I heal my wound,
Taking from your garden the dearest
Flower full of your scent and your being.
In front of you I continue to walk;
With a steady step the sun covers my track.
How beautiful it is to be able to continue to love you,
And multiply my love for every star.
You well know that there are days of pain
In which breath becomes deeper.
Life is only life if there is the courage
To take truth to the front of the world.
