WONDERS MAINTAIN STANDARDS

IN FINAL SEASON IN CLASS 3A

BY JOE HABINA

Special to the Independent Tribune

KANNAPOLIS The A.L.

Brown Wonders football team
has been sitting in the 3A classications waiting room for the
last three years while a return to
the South Piedmont Conference
has been imminent.
Coach Mike Newsome said his
team would never consider itself
a lame duck as it plays its nal
season in Class 4A, with the N.C.
High School Athletic Association
moving the squad back to 3A after the 2016-17 academic year.
The Wonders, who won the
Battle for the Bell last season,
perceive the 2016 season as a
chance to settle some unnished
business against the MECKA 4A
conference, which has some of
the ercest big-school teams in
the state.
A.L. Brown is coming off a season in which it posted its best
overall record of its three years
in 4A. And despite losing a big
chunk of its offensive production through the graduation of
its best skill-position players, the
Wonders feel they can still go out
with a bang.
Our goals arent going to
change, said Newsome. We
want to win the conference, get
into the playoffs with a good seed
and make a run in the playoffs.
With the talent in the conference
we play in, were facing an uphill battle. Its hard to compete
against schools twice our size.
Three-time defending Class
4AA state champion Mallard
Creek sets the standard for the
rest of the league, but teams
such as Hough and Vance are
consistently competitive with
the Mighty Mavericks. And so
were the Wonders last year.
A.L. Brown suffered a 37-27
loss to Mallard Creek, somewhat
of a morale-boosting victory for
a team looking to add a signature
victory to its MECKA resume.

WONDERS
FAST FACTS

JAMES NIX/JNIX@INDEPENDENTTRIBUNE.COM

Wonders coach Mike Newsome (white shirt) res up his team before a game last season. A.L. Brown nished the
2015 season with a 10-3 record.

Should the Wonders make the

imprint this season that they
desire, the change might have
to come through their defense,
laced with eight returning starters that include a fast and veteran-heavy secondary, which has
been one of the positions Mallard Creek has decimated opponents with over the years.
Under new defensive coordinator Barry Lipscomb, the Wonders will employ a new 4-2-5
defense which will feature its
secondary.
Senior Steven Howie is moving from outside linebacker to
safety, which will provide him
the latitude of roaming all over
the eld. All-conference safety
Cinsere Allison, Equarius Baldwin, and Nakohr Wise bolster
the quality unit.
Although the linebacking and
linemen corps were decimated
by graduation, productive players such as third year starting

linebacker Elijah Hall and linemen Najee Williams and Sherrod

Sutton return.
I play mostly offense, but the
defense gives me a lift every time
I go out there, said senior receiver Lewis Harris. Every time
the offense runs our plays (at
practice), the defense is on it,
and they dont even know half
our plays.
Browns receivers appear to be
the most experienced unit on
offense. Harris (301 yards) and
Brandon Dry (four touchdowns)
will help a new quarterback get
acclimated.
Harris is a 6-foot-2 speedster
who played in just seven games
last year but still managed to
rank second on the team with
301 yards. Dry made the most of
his nine catches in 2015, nishing with a team-best four touchdown grabs.
Another player who could
gure into the pass-catching

scheme is senior Sherrod Sutton. The 6-2, 225-pound is being recruited as a linebacker
the Charlotte 49ers and Georgia State have offered but last
season showed the versatility to
catch three touchdowns.
I do like offense, Sutton said
with a grin. So if Coach Newsome needs me to go over there
and make some plays, I will. I
just think we have a chance to
have a special year.
Entering the season, the replacement for last years starting
quarterback, Damon Johnson,
replacement looks to be either
Cordarius Butler, the JV starter
for two years, or senior Zach Williamson.
Both starting halfbacks need to
be replaced, and JaQuerius Bost
looks to be a leading candidate.
The offensive line doesnt have
much depth, but Mason Goetting and Jeremy Davis are both
returning starters.

While the defense is strong,

the Wonders offense will sorely
miss some key players. In addition to the loss of the dual threat
Johnson, the team also saw the
graduations of Jalyn Cagle and
Sandon McCoy, who were two
of the best running backs in the
county. For perspective, Cagle
will play at Gardner-Webb this
season, while McCoy is a rstyear player at Army.
Bost is capable of having an
impact, however.
Last season, despite being limited to 33 carries in ll-in duty,
Bost ranked third on the team
with ve rushing touchdowns.
He nished his junior season by
averaging ve yards per carry.
The versatile Howie also is a
capable ball carrier, as he played
halfback during a playoff game
when Cagle was injured last
season. Howie said he wouldnt
mind getting some carries this
season.

SPIDERS MUST GEL TO KEEP

LEAGUE STREAK ALIVE

BY C. JEMAL HORTON

jhorton@independenttribune.com

CONCORD Another group

of talented football players has
cycled through the Concord
High School program.
In one fell swoop during the
schools June graduation ceremonies, the Spiders lost a combined 20 years of varsity experience when four-year starters
Mike Baker, Keenan Black,
Carter Mozingo, Dez Scott and
Drew Yoos walked across the
stage.
Each was an all-conference
performer, and two of them
Black (offense) and Baker (defense) were league players of
the year. That group contributed mightily to the Spiders
run to a third consecutive undefeated South Piedmont title
grab and the Class 3AA state
seminals.
Now, as is usually expected of
him, Spiders coach Glen Padgett
merely will be asked to make
something similar happen.
The 2016 edition of the Spiders
has its share of special players,
as senior safety/receiver Hamsah Nasirildeen and junior defensive tackle Rick Sandidge
are regarded among the best in
their respective classes.
But Padgett, now in his eighth
season at the helm, warns that
this years team has several Concord varsity neophytes who still
are lling their way as Thursdays Battle for the Bell against
rival A.L. Brown beckons.
This is a great group of young
men, and theyve worked hard
in practice -- weve just got
those questions, Padgett said.
And those questions arent going to be answered in practice.
What kids do in practice and,
often times, what happens in
games are two different things.
You nd out how they respond
to adversity versus an opponent, especially the quality opponent we have (to open) this
year. Theres no way for a kid

Concord coach Glen Padgett celebrated with his players after the Spiders defeated A.L. Brown in the 2014 Battle
for the Bell game. Can the Spiders win back the Bell after losing it last year?

whos never been in that environment to prepare for it.

To be clear, though, no one
outside Bailey Stadium is feeling sorry for Padgetts Spiders.
Last years team that dominated the SPC and made an inspired playoff run?
That Spider squad faced similar questions after the loss of
the entire offensive line and
acclaimed running back Rocky
Reid to graduation. But things
worked out rather well, and a
bevy of players showed they
were winners and college-level
athletes.
This years team might have
similar potential, though the
offense will be led by a young
sophomore quarterback: either Larkin Lancaster or Justin
Smith.
Lancaster was Concords JV
starter last year and got a few
snaps on the varsity. Smith,
meanwhile, is a transfer from
East Rowan, but he also mostly
saw JV action in 2015.

The 5-foot-9, 160-pound Lancaster is a mobile, quick player,

who throws the ball well on the
move. Smiths a rangy 6-2 and
170 pounder whos calm in the
pocket and shows good touch
on his throws, especially the
deep ball.
Theyre both very coachable, theyve worked hard, and
they have a good understanding of what were trying to do,
Padgett said. Its just a matter
of getting better and making
the right decision the majority
of the time.
At running back, P.J. Hall will
start as the featured carrier
something he showed he can
handle after rushing for 1,484
yards and 12 touchdowns a year
ago.
Although Halls backeld
mate from last season, Nick
Kelly, currently isnt playing
because of a personnel matter, two newcomers will help:
5-9, 210-pound Carson transfer
Jay Wilkerson, as well as Malik

Brown, who Padgett said is a

legit sub-4.5 kid.
The receiving corps is solid,
really solid, led by the 6-foot-5,
210-pound Nasirildeen. Other
likely starting pass-catchers
include juniors Zyoin Boger
and Antonio Campbell and 61 sophomore Ikym Hall, who
some say conjures memories of
2013 Concord grad Alex Asbury.
Jourdain Heilig also will see
time at receiver.
Concords offensive line features three veterans, although
each is at a new position. Hollis
Miller and Ben Holbrooks both
have transitioned to guard,
while junior Isaac Cochran goes
from guard to center. Logan
Cress steps in at right tackle,
while the left tackle spot belongs to 6-6, 275-pound Christian Ealey, a basketball player
who hasnt been on the gridiron
since middle school.
Sandidge should have another
big year on the defensive line,
and a pair of Millers Nemo

In addition to running back,
Hall also should start at linebacker he was all-conference
there two years ago and get
support from promising players Clint Bost and JaNai Spratt.
The secondary could be the
strength of the defense, as Nasirildeen and Rocco Dsouza
make for one of the hardest-hitting safety duos in the county,
and Justin Nicholson and Jalen
Martin handle cornerback duties. Nick Santiago also will see
time at strong safety.
Boger and Landon Trott both
will punting, and Trott will take
care of kickoffs, extra points
and eld goals.
Although making the Spiders
combination of talent and inexperience gel in a timely fashion
will be a task, Padgett hasnt
lowered his standards for any of
the players in his program.
As a coach, he said, its a
challenge. But the challenge is
fun.

CONTINUING A LEGACY: A.L. BROWN AT CONCORD

SUNDAY, AUGUST 14, 2016

BATTLE FOR THE BELL 2016

THE GIVER

A.L. BROWNS SELFLESS

SUTTON WANTS TO MAKE A
DIFFERENCE OFF THE FIELD

BY C. JEMAL HORTON

jhorton@independenttribune.com

KANNAPOLIS The people in Sherrod Suttons inner circle have always

believed he was destined for greatness.
And despite Suttons chiseled 6-foot3, 225-pound frame, tireless work rate
and ability to cause bodily harm to
people running with footballs, that
potential for greatness has never been
limited to the gridiron.
While the A.L. Brown High School
senior aspires to play big-time college
football and, quite possibly in the NFL,
he also wants to leave a different kind
of legacy as an athlete.
I want to give back, especially to the
homeless people, Sutton said. I really
would love to do that. Its important to
me. I think thats what Im meant to do
help people.
Family members say Sutton has always had a seless spirit, but the linebacker/receiver had an experience last
month that he said forever changed
him.
On a steamy day in Concord, near
Corbin Avenue, Sutton was mowing
grass with some family and friends
when a homeless man approached
and began sharing the story of how
he wound up on the streets. The more
than man spoke, the more intently Sutton listened.
He started talking to us about how
he doesnt have a home to go to, Sutton recalled. He was telling me how he
had everything, and now he has nothing. That stuck with me.
So now, instead of focusing solely on
football-related things such as form
tackling and backpedaling, Sutton
also spends a great deal of mental energy trying to make a difference off the
eld.
On the eld, hes already doing quite
well.
Last season, from his outside linebacker spot, Sutton ranked fourth in
tackles (58) on a Wonders defense that

allowed just 16 points a game while

competing in the rough-and-tumble
MECKA 4A conference. He also added
a sack and displayed the athletic ability
to tie for the team lead with two interceptions.
On offense, Sutton caught just seven

passes, however, three of those went

for touchdowns, which gave him the
second-highest total on the squad behind fellow senior Brandon Drys four
receiving scores.
Those numbers coupled with his
impressive size, speed and strength

helped make Sutton a recruiting target.

In May, the Charlotte 49ers and Georgia
State University offered scholarships
to Sutton, and hes currently receiving
interest from bigger programs, such as
South Carolina and N.C. State.
Colleges are courting Sutton as a linebacker. And as much as he loves playing offense, hes perfectly ne on the
defensive side of the ball if it lands him
on the college campus he desires.
Most schools see me as an outside
linebacker or a middle linebacker,
Sutton said. It really doesnt matter, as
long as I can get on the eld. Plus, I like
defense, too. I just like ying around,
being relentless, just going crazy hitting people.
And then, of course, he likes helping
people.
It is a character trait family members
noticed in Sutton when he was younger.
Hes really humble, said Kyrell Williamson, Suttons rst cousin and a
former Wonders standout linebacker.
Sherrod wants to help others. He
wants to see other people succeed.
Even if people are succeeding more
than him, hes not one to be jealous. He
believes everybody should be great. He
believes everybody should be treated
equally and feel important.
He does it for his friends or people
at school. He doesnt have a lot, but
he gives as a teenager in high school.
Thats how our family is we like to
help others out. Its instilled in him.
Caring about others, Williamson said,
is why things such as the family unit are
so important to Sutton.
For instance, while the two young
men are cousins, Sutton refers to Williamson as his brother. Those who do
not really know the family history are
none the wiser, mainly because
Sutton and Williamson grew up like
siblings.

Q&A: SPENDING TIME WITH JUSTIN NICHOLSON

ONE OF NATIONS TOP JUNIORS, SANDIDGE EMBRACES NEWFOUND SUCCESS

BY C. JEMAL HORTON

jhorton@independenttribune.com

CONCORD After establishing himself as one of the top high school defensive lineman in the state, earning
a chance to play in one of the nations
biggest all-star games and having multiple meetings with some of college
footballs most recognizable coaches,
Rick Sandidge still perceives himself an
overachiever.
In Sandidges bespectacled eyes, he is
overcoming the odds.
Despite his impressive size 6 foot
5, 275 pounds and supreme athletic
ability, the Concord High School junior
still doesnt quite understand why more
than 20 of the nations top programs
want him so badly.
My parents are shocked, I know that,
Sandidge said. They really didnt think
this was going to happen. And Im going
to be honest: I didnt either.
Since I was a little kid, I always wanted to go to the NFL, but I really never
got into the process of thinking about
college. Now that so many of these
schools are showing interest in me, Im
like, Wow.
Sandidge has prompted a similar reaction from college recruiters: Wow.
During his sophomore campaign last
year, Sandidge emerged as the most
heavily recruited player on a star-studded Spiders team that went undefeated
in the SPC for a third consecutive season and reached the Class 3AA state
seminals.
Midway through the fall, North Carolina was the rst school to offer Sandidge
a scholarship. A few months later, Spiders head football coach Glen Padgett
and defensive coordinator Matt Jenkins
were constantly getting calls about Sandidge.
By the spring, Sandidge also held offers from schools such as Duke, Florida,

JAMES NIX/JNIX@INDEPENDENTTRIBUNE.COM

Concords Rick Sandidge has been offered scholarships by more than 20 colleges, and that
list could grow once teams are able to contact him directly in September.

Florida State, Louisville, Michigan, N.C.

State, Penn State, South Carolina, Syracuse, Tennessee, Virginia Tech and West
Virginia.
Then, this summer, the biggest of the

big-boy programs extended an invitation. The reigning national champions,

the Alabama Crimson Tide, said they,
too, wanted Sandidge.
Even for someone being pursued by

Crest (last year in the state seminals). No one

expected us to lose at all, but especially not that
bad (44-6). For them to come out here and beat
us like that, it was terrible. From start to end.
That will always stick with me. I thought that
was going to be the year to get that (good) feeling one more time.

KANNAPOLIS As the middle child of a family of ve children, Elijah Hall is familiar with
having to nd his way. And thats exactly what
the senior defensive lineman has done during
his A.L. Brown High School football career.
After what he considered to be a sub-par
season in 2014, Hall bounced back to become
one of the best defensive players in the MECKA
4A conference last year.
The 6-foot, 250-pounder was a force at times,
nishing with 40 tackles and tying Steven Howie for the team lead with seven tackles behind
the line of scrimmage. In addition, Hall was one
of the best players in the county at corralling
the quarterback, as he had 10 sacks in 2015.
Hall said he doesnt have any college scholarship offers at the moment, but he believes a
strong season by the Wonders and another hardworking year for himself will change that soon.

What is your mindset going into the

season?

Who is the best player in Cabarrus

County who is not on your team?

What is your expectation going into this

season?

I want to end the season with six, seven (interceptions). Im going to return three of them.
Im going to the house on three of them, at
least. And I want a (state championship). I know
everybody wants one, but Concord deserves a
ring. Weve been close way too many times the
past few years.

Javonte Misenheimer (from Jay M. Robinson).

Hes my boy, and hes going to cut up this season. Hes going to do very well. But I cant wait
to guard him. I told him I dont want to hear any
excuses this year.

To keep the bar high. I want to do better than

last season.

Super speed. You could go somewhere in the

blink of an eye, and no one would see you. So
on the football eld, I would be unstoppable.

What has been the best moment of your

football career?
The 2013 state championship game. It was beautiful, it was like a rush. I was in ninth grade, and I
knew I wasnt going to get in the game, but I had

Who will win the college football national championship?

Bama. They always nd a way to replace great
players.

What has been the lowest moment of

your football career?

Talk about that strong season you had

last year. How did you do it?
I feel like it was all preparation. Coming off my
sophomore year, I felt like I didnt play well, and
I wanted to do better. It seemed like people from
the outside looking in felt like I wasnt ready to
play. I felt like I had something to prove, and I
tried to play that way every day.

Who is your football role model?

Richard Sherman (of the Seattle Seahawks).
He looks down people, and he does it in a lowkey fashion except for that one year, when
he went crazy on TV, screaming, Im the best
corner in the game.

Whats your favorite movie?

Who is your non-football role model?

My mom (Hillary). She plays a big part in
my life. She has a bunch of roles, and she does
everything she can to make sure Im on top of

major programs, the scholarship offer

from Alabama coach Nick Saban was
an eye-catcher.
I was like, Wow. The team that won
the championship last year offered
me, Sandidge recalled. But at the
same time, I have to keep my options
open. I have to remember: Ive got
Florida State, Florida, Michigan all
those other schools. All those are great
schools. And although Alabama is special, I have to keep my choices open. I
cant just automatically say, Oh, its Alabama.
Sandidge hasnt let his meteoric rise
change him. His friends, he said, play a
big part in that.
My friends dont treat me any differently; they just treat me like Rick,
Sandidge said.
Padgett and his staff have always
worked to keep their most highly recruited players ground, emphasizing
team in nearly every setting.
And then theres Sandidges easygoing
nature. Despite his mammoth size, hes
a bit of a teddy bear. The only hint of
toughness he shows is when hes on the
football eld. Otherwise, hes wearing
his glasses and trying to have fun.
People recognize me more now, but I
think its more because of my personality, Sandidge said. People already like
me because I have a good personality.
Sandidges exemplary way of handling his situation doesnt at all surprise Padgett, whos coached his share
of highly recruited players in his time.
The Spiders coach believes Sandidges
environment has put him in position
to handle his position as a highly recognized recruit with aplomb.
Young people seem to handle these
things one or two ways, Padgett said.
They handle them with the deer-in-

CONCORD Concord High School senior

Justin Nicholson has the perfect personality to
be a defensive back: He has swagger. Plenty of it.
While Nicholson isnt a braggart, he clearly believes in his ability to defend anyone in the state.
And why not?
Last season, Nicholson registered three interceptions, and he took two of those picks all
the way back for touchdowns. He also was great
in run support, nishing with 43 tackles on one
of the states stoutest defenses.
This season, Nicholson hopes to play an ever
bigger role for the Spiders, starting with the
Battle for the Bell game this week.
A three-sport letterman for the Spiders (football,
basketball and track), the 6-foot-1 Nicholson also
is looking to attract college recruiters this season.
One thing is certain: He denitely believes he
will make that happen.

Whats your pre-game ritual?

To just pray. I try not to be tense or get too

How did you pick your jersey number?

In seventh grade, I thought I was a skill player
so I tried to get a low number. But I wasnt a skill
player, so the coach made me go with the linemen. I still tried to get the lowest number they
had, and that was 54. In eighth grade, my mama
(Natasha McCauley) said she liked seeing me in
54, so I just kept that.

Speed would be everything. If I have super
speed I could run down anybody.

What has been your lowest moment in

youre already down. Go for it while you
have the opportunity.

Hard Ball (a lm about a baseball

team comprised of disadvantaged
youths). I didnt have it as bad as those
kids did, though.

Who is the best player in Cabarrus County who is not on your

team?

What movie best represents your

life?

What is your cooking

specialty in the kitchen?

I would have to say Hamsah Nasirildeen

Grilled cheese. Thats about all I can
from Concord.Watching his highlights
make.
and seeing him play, hes a good athlete.

What positions have you played?

Ive played all across the defensive
front. My primary position is the three
technique, defensive tackle. And I play
offensive left guard. Im starting to
learn right guard right now.

Who will win the college national

championship?

Sandidge

Sutton

From Page 5

Williamsons
father,
Myron Williamson, and
Suttons mother, Alicia
Williamson, are brother
and sister. Sutton, whose
father is deceased, has
been raised by his mother
and grandfather, Kenneth
Williamson, who helped
shape the way he views the
world today.
But when he needed
someone closer to his age
to emulate, Sutton often
looked to Williamson, who
is three years his senior.
We were around each
other all the time, said
Williamson. He stayed (at
my house), and I stayed (at
his). He would always say,
Im watching you and doing what youre doing, so I
knew I had to do the right
thing for him. Thats how
close we are.
In many ways, Sutton is
taking Williamsons path to
gridiron success to greater
heights.
Williamson is a redshirt
sophomore linebacker with
great promise at WinstonSalem State University,
one of the countrys most
respected NCAA Division
II programs. Last year, he
made a clutch interception
to secure a fth consecutive CIAA divisional championship for the Rams.
Sutton, who will move
to middle linebacker for
the Wonders this season,
already possesses offers
from a pair of Division I
schools, and more are expected to follow suit.
Williamson
certainly
expects Sutton to attain a
high level of success in his
football future.
In his conference, he
can be the best, Williamson said. He just has to
stay focused and stay in the
lm room and study. The
skys the limit for him.
Sutton also believes he
will make it. But that belief has nothing to do with

JAMES NIX/JNIX@INDEPENDENTTTRIBUNE.COM

Concords Rick Sandidge (90) is drawing attention from some of the elite
college programs in the nation.

Were denitely looking forward

to what this brings for him.
But for as much attention as
Sandidge has gotten now, he still
likely hasnt seen the full extent
of the intense college football
recruiting game. That should
change come September, when
college coaches can directly

contact Sandidge via phone call

and text message.
Concord senior defensive
back/receiver Hamsah Nasirildeen knows what thats all about.
Nasirildeen who also holds
offers from blue bloods such as
Alabama, Florida State, Michigan and Notre Dame has been

swag or anything supercial.

Besides Williamson, Sutton said he draws inspiration from his two favorite
NFL players: Blue-collar
defensive stars Luke Kuechly of the Carolina Panthers and J.J. Watt of the
Houston Texans.
With J.J. Watt, I saw his
E:60 (feature on ESPN)
and how hard he works
and how disciplined he is,
Sutton said. (Watt) said
he goes to bed at 9 oclock
(p.m.). I said, Youve done
made it this far, and youre
still working like youve
got something to prove?
Wow!
As a result, Sutton has
adjusted his own bedtime,
although not as drastically
as Watt.
A year ago, I really
didnt go to bed until, like,
2 oclock, he said. But JAMES NIX/JNIX@INDEPENDENTTTRIBUNE.COM
now, I work around the 12- A.L. Browns Sherrod Sutton
oclock range.
(9) is a dual threat as a
I want to do whatever receiver and a linebacker.
I need to do to make it
and make that difference
in peoples lives. Im willing to do anything: work
hard, stay in my books and
school. Whatever it takes to
be a blessing for someone.

have a squad.

What is your favorite

subject in school?

History. To me, everything changes.

You learn it so you wont repeat it.

Five years from now,

Elijah Hall will be ...
Hopefully, I will have a career in nursing.

Id have to say Alabama. They always

the-headlights approach, where

its like, Oh, my gosh! Wow! Or
they just kind of go with the ow.
And Ricks one of those kids who
just kind of goes with the ow.
Hes enjoying the accolades,
but at the same time, if you were
to talk to him and ask him what
the most important thing is for
him right now, its to help this
team to be successful, Padgett
continued. And I think that
speaks volumes for how he was
raised. I think that speaks volumes about, not just what kind
of player, but what kind of young
man he is.
And that certainly makes Sandidges mother, Keshia, proud.
Juniors just kind of remained
humbled through all this, Keshia said of her son, who shares
a name with his father, Rick Sr.
I know its shocking for him,
but hes kind of a to-himself kid.

inundated with contact from recruiters in recent months.

And that fact that Sandidges
list of accomplishments could
only increase makes him more
susceptible to being blitzed by
college coaches.
In June, Sandidge was invited
to the prestigious Under Armour
All-American Future 50 combine
in Orlando, Florida, a two-day
event in December reserved for
players ranked among the top
50 11th-graders in the nation. If
he does well at the combine, he
then would receive an invitation to play in the Under Armour
All-American Game as a senior.
It is an accomplishment that a
multitude of todays NFL players
share.
Thats something I want really badly, Sandidge said. That
would mean a lot, because those
guys are the best of the best.
Sandidge desperately wants to
take his spot among the best of
the best, and many believe he
has what it takes to get there.

Joe Habina

Padgett said Sandidges physical

attributes are what attract college scouts to him.
Obviously, (his) height and
length and explosiveness and his
motor, Padgett said. He plays
hard every play. Those are things
that can be taught, but they can
be taught to an extent.
They have to be innate in a lot
of cases to get to that elite level,
and thats where he is.
But Sandidge doesnt want to
leave anything to chance. He
said he is working on being both
physically and mentally prepared
for when he arrives at the next
level. He has a plan in place, and
hes ready to put it into action.
I want to be a dominant player, he said. I want to make sure
my family is OK and make sure
that Ive done everything Im capable of doing before my career
is over. I want to keep myself
clean and stay away from stuff
that can get me in trouble.
If I do those things, I think I
can accomplish a lot.
