World History: The First World War

LESSON PLAN FOR GRADE 9

World War I forever changed the face of warfare. New technology yielded millions
of casualties. The conditions in the trenches created untold hardships on the men
who had to endure them. People on the home front were subjected to shortages and
hardships as the emergence of Total War infiltrated all aspects of their lives.

OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, a student should be able to:
1. identify the causes, the immediate circumstances that led to World War
I and all their consequences;
2. utilize varied sources to develop a cohesive, comprehensive and
historically accurate picture of the World War I era;
3. determine what moral lessons can be learned from World War I.

the specific
chart)

(While the students carry

out their brainstorming,
the teacher draws an
empty guide chart on the
board. The chart aims to
gauge the students
understanding of what
they had learned from
watching a World War I
documentary during the
previous session.)

study the
chart on the

Socratic
method of
questioning

Do you think the world

can afford another war?
Like the World War III,
perhaps?
Why not?

Indeed, it is expensive.
We need a lot of resources
for the military, and not
only that. It will definitely
cost lives. So, for you, is
war good?
Use of
relevant
quotation

Okay then. Lets take a

look at this quote by Karl
Kraus. (presents the quote
through the PowerPoint
slideshow) Anyone who
wants to read?

No, maam.
We cant.

Because it is
expensive.
No, maam.
It is not
good.

lose; then,
one is

students.)

answers from students,
the teacher can now move

smooth transition to the
next lesson.)

raise their
hands to
answer.)

No, maam.
It didnt.

Why did you say so?

Thats right! We shall be

discussing about World
War II next meeting.
