Kyoto Art Center Artist-in-Residence Program 2011

Kyoto Art Center offers Artist-in-Residence Program to support young artists and art researchers who
wish to pursue creative activities in Kyoto. Applications are invited from young people in art-related fields
who would like to produce works, conduct research, etc., during their stay in Kyoto.

Application Details       


Kyoto Art Center (KAC) is a venue for exchange and mutual stimulus among artists. This program
supports creative activities of young artists and art researchers who aim to explore new artistic
expression in their encounter of Japanese culture. Participants in this program create and research arts,
staying in Kyoto. KAC aims also to serve as a place where Kyoto citizens can encounter different forms
of artistic expression. There are no restrictions on genre. We welcome artists who try to create new
forms of expression in a specific genre, or across genres. We are particularly interested in working with
those who would like to build rapport with Kyoto citizens.

1. Support Offered by the Program


• Accommodation is provided by KAC during the participant's stay. (In principle, a maximum of three
months. Costs of food and utilities are not included.)

• Space for production of works is provided, free of charge, at Kyoto Art Center. (Required space may
not always be available; adjustment will be made after discussion with qualified applicants.)

• JpnYen 200,000 is granted for each qualified applicant (whether an individual or a group) for expenses
of production and/or research.

2. Qualifications for Application


• Emerging artists and art researchers (no age restriction).

• No restriction on art genre or nationality of applicants.

• Applicants must have a specific reason to stay in Kyoto for their creations, researches, etc.

• Applicants must organize and carry out exchange activities with Kyoto citizens during their stay as a
residence artist.

• Applicants must pay their own air fares and other transportation fees, and living expenses (other than
accommodation).

• Applicants must publish/present results of their residence activities such as exhibitions, performances,
lectures, and workshops.

• Applicants must be able to communicate in English or Japanese.

3. Duration of Stay

Maximum of three months : During April 1st (Fri), 2011 - March 31st (Sat), 2012

4. Selection of Applications
A screening committee composed of specialists in different genres of art carefully evaluates
applications. The result will be notified to all applicants by the end of October.

5. How to Apply
(1) Application form
• Please return two copies of this application form by post or bring them to Kyoto Art Center.

• The admission office opens: 10:00-20:00 (Mon-Sun)


• We accept no application by e-mail or fax.
• Please type or fill in the form in block letters. Any applications written in illegible letters are not
acceptable.

(2) Reference Materials


• Please attach materials (two copies) that illustrate your activities, such as pamphlets, videotapes
[NTSC], DVDs [NTSC/region code 2], CDs, and other materials for reference (letters of
recommendation from recognized institutes, etc.).

• If you are a performing artist or a video artist, be sure to include a ten-minute videotape [NTSC] or
DVD [NTSC/region code 2] (two copies) edited from your recent work(s).

• The submitted materials are not returnable. Send copies, not original materials.

6. Application Deadline

Applications must arrive no later than June 30th (Wed), 2010.

7. Please Note
• Cost of materials, travel, freight, food, artist fees, and other expenses are not paid by KAC under the
program. These costs are the participants’ responsibility. (KAC arranges and pays for accommodation,
as mentioned above).

• Program participants have to arrange their own delivery of materials for production of works,
rehearsals, researches, and so on.

• After finishing the program, participants must submit a report to KAC.
