America Increases Support for Refugees in Syria
Since 2011, Syria has been subject to a major civil war, threatening the countrys stability
in perhaps the most menacing way. Various terror groups such as ISIS and Hezbollah to name a
few, have taken advantage of the ability to conquer land and prolong their messages against the
Syrian government while the country remains in turmoil. Although much of the information
pertaining to this conflict approaching five years in duration seems bleak, fortunately the United
States has increased humanitarian efforts in the form of donations as wells as the allowance of up
to 100,000 Syrian refugees to be granted asylum by 2017. The U.S. government as well as its
governed citizens that are donating to the war crisis in Syria are illustrating the civic virtues of
responsibility, contribution, humility, and respect.
The Americans that are providing support for refugees in Syria are exemplifying the
virtue of responsibility in that they are aiming to do what is best and keeping the long- term
interests of those involved, in this case Syrian refugees, in mind. In providing support for
humanitarian efforts, Americans are responding to their sense of responsibility to help fellow
human beings that are in desperate need. The virtue of contribution is especially evident in
humanitarian support for the war in Syria in that Americans are striving to care for those who
depend on them. Many people in Syria are fleeing their home country in a desperate attempt to
flee the increased violence. Therefore, the additional donation of $419 million will help in
providing relief for others who depend on them. Humility is also an evident virtue expressed by
the U.S. in the Syrian war effort in that the needs of the Syrian people are currently being upheld
as paramount in this time of crisis. In other words, many Americans have decided to put others
before themselves in a moral obligation to support those in need. Americans as well as
government officials such as Secretary of State John Kerry, who are taking measures to improve
the lives of Syrian refugees, are treating fellow human beings with respect. In this case,
protection is being extended to every other person encountered that is in need which is crucial in
demonstrating respect to others.
Upon analyzing the current crisis in Syria, it is quite evident that civic virtues are not
solely expressed to fellow citizens of ones own country, but instead these virtues should be
extended to help fellow human beings. Perhaps the practice of these virtues are even perfected
when they are exemplified to a stranger or to those in which certain cultural or language
barriers exist. When civic virtues are expressed towards one another on a humane level, ones
country or government is not improved, but the world is transformed into a place filled with
compassion, love, and understanding for all.
