Professional Service Learning Project

April 2016
In this semester, I volunteered to help the organization of the Great Lakes Chapter (GLC) of the
American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) winter meeting, which was held on
Thursday March 24th, 2016 at Henry Ford-West Bloomfield Hospital, MI. Here is the link to the
event on the website of GLC AAPM: http://chapter.aapm.org/GLC/
The local GLC routinely holds a couple of meetings every year. The topic for this winter meeting
was about failure modes and effects analysis (FMEA). Three invited speakers, Kelly Younge,
Ph.D. from University of Michigan, Brett Miller, M.S. from Henry Ford Health System,
Michigan, and Gary Ezzell, Ph.D. from Mayo Clinic, Arizona, gave their talks of "FMEA
Applications in Radiation Oncology", "FMEA and root cause analysis applied to Customer
Technical Bulletins (CTBs)", and "Applying FMEA and Root Cause Analysis techniques to the
clinical medical physics environment", respectively.
My contribution: In this event, I worked as a volunteer at the reception desk to help the
registration process: gathering registration fees for the attendees, dispatching broachers,
answering questions, etc. I also had some good conversations with the board officers elected. I
was told that for each meeting, there are two sources of income, vendor contributions and
registration fees, and different types of expenses like catering, reimbursement of expenses to the
visiting speakers, honor prizes, etc.
Personal reflection: I had done some research on FMEA on the Radiation Safety course last
semester. Through the talks in this meeting, I had a better understanding of how FMEA can
identify potential hazards before actual damage occurs to patients, and collecting and analyzing
the errors and near-misses could provide very valuable information to improve safety and quality
of radiotherapy. I learned a lot by participating the local GLC meeting and helping the
registration process. Its always a good opportunity to improve professional knowledge by
attending these meetings. Its also a good place to social with the local peers.
