What was the idea behind bloggers styling and posing
for the fashion story? We wanted to show how people
can make spring fashion their own, and bloggers do that in
an accessible way. How was this different from a regular
fashion shoot? It was the bloggers own photographers,
their own hair and makeup; they picked each location;
they produced it.

Hair Lesson
To make Lovatos short
cut look edgy, hairstylist
Garren blew out her
hair with a large round
brush, then switched to a
medium one to create
a piecey flip at the bottom.

Details, see Shopping Guide.
Makeup Lesson
Makeup artist Hung Vanngo wanted
to spotlight Lovatos freckles, so
he left her skin bare except for a
little concealer. He smudged
mauve shadow around her eyes
and blended on a rose cream
blush. On her lips: matte fuchsia
lipstick, applied with a brush.

A soothing shower
can be hard on
the skin. Gohara,
an associate
clinical professor
of dermatology at
Yale University,
explains why
in Shower Power.
Have you always
been interested
in skin?
When I was little, I
watched a lot of MTV.
My parents wanted to
encourage a more
educational activity,
so my dad gave
me a book about
my Egyptian
heritage. Pyramids,
schmyramids. I was
so into the Pharaoh
princesses hair, kohl
makeup, and skin.
If you had
to practice another
kind of medicine,
what would it be?
Psychiatry.
Interestingly, there
is a lot of psych
in dermatology.
What is the first
question people ask
when they find
out what you do?
Do I need
Botox? Or Is this
skin cancer?
Kendal, a makeup
artist for more than
30 years, created the
clean makeup looks
in Fresh Takes.
What was your first
makeup-artist job?
It was for a freebie
magazine called Girl
About Town in the
80s. I did the cover
and some pictures
inside, but I cant
remember what
the makeup was.
What is
your favorite thing
about a fresh
makeup look?
It allows you to play
up certain features.
By starting with a
clean base, you can
choose to accentuate
lips or eyes, or you
can keep a very
effortless feeling.
What unusual
tools are in your kit?
Brushes from
the art store. There
are some really
great ones for
eyeliner and lips.
What products do
you always carry?
Rose-water spray,
Smiths Rosebud
Salve, and Egyptian
Magic [cream].

PRODUCT REVIEW
Instant Volume
The secret to cheating thicker
hair is also the secret to fewer color
appointments: root cover-up.
Strategically placed hair powder, like
our favorite, ColorWow, fools the
eye into seeing denser, more abundant
hair. I brush it right along the part
and around the face and the nape
of the neck if I do a bun or ponytail to
fill in any exposed scalp, says
hairstylist Jen Atkin, who even uses this
trick on clients with tons of hair, like
the Kardashians and Jenners. It makes
your hair appear fuller, especially in
photos. And if you have grays? Well, it
covers those, too. MADDIE ABERMAN

Itll be a while before candy-colored velour tracksuits
make a comeback. But if you havent touched lip gloss
since those dark fashion days, nows the time to reconsider. New formulas, like Rimmel London Oh My Gloss,
Dior Addict Ultra-Gloss, LOral Paris Infallible Pro-Matte
Gloss, Sephora Collection Colorful Gloss Balm, and
Este Lauder Pure Color Envy Sculpting Gloss, deliver
lip-balm-level moisture and shine without the whole
hair-stuck-to-your-mouth issue. And they dont just
come in shimmery pink and nude. There are opaque
shades of car-paint red, cerulean, lemon yellow, and
dark plum, and our favorite new way to wear them is
by contrasting all that shine with matte skin. Groomed
eyebrows, a swipe of mascara, and thats all you need,
says makeup artist Robin Black. Anything more and
you might as well be back in 2003.

OW TO BUY A GREAT (NONCHEESY)
VALENTINES DAY GIFT
Give an experience. If the person
youre shopping for loves food, find
a cooking or wine-tasting class you
can take together. Tell your love
about it over a bottle of wine on February 14, but book it for a later date.
It will feel much less contrived. Or
if your significant other loves vintage
cars, rent one for a day and go for a
mini road trip.
Play tourist. Treat your own city as if
youre a visitor, and go on a boat ride
or walking tour. Do that thing you keep
saying we should really do. It could

Perfume, chocolate, roses: These are all too predictable. As the chief marketing officer of Farfetch,
an online marketplace for hundreds of independent boutiques around the world, its Stephanie
Hortons job to instantly know the difference between an ordinary gift and something truly unique.
We asked her how to make a romantic gesture that doesnt feel like a clich.
INSIDERSGUIDE
Declutter ruthlessly. Put mail, papers, shoes, pet toysanything thats on the floor, a
counter, or a tablein a basket and remove it from the room. That will immediately make any
space look cleaner. And designate a no admittance zone where you can store everything
out of sight. Mine is the upstairs bedroom.
Focus your efforts. Figure out the messiest part of a room and clean that first. For a lot of
people, its the kitchen counters. I have a 16-year-old son and dogs, so for me, its the floors.
I hit them with the vacuum for a few minutes; it does wonders.
Zero in on sinks. A clean sink makes the rest of the kitchen or bathroom look tidy. Put dirty
dishes in the dishwasher, wipe the sink (including the faucet) with a damp Mr. Clean Magic
Eraser, and then dry it with a paper towel or microfiber cloth. It creates the same spotless
look as a four-step powder-and-scrub process. In the bathroom, fold the towels nicely and
stash anything personal, like your toothbrush, out of sight.
Always be closing. Shut closet and bathroom doors, shower curtains, toilet seats, drawers,
and cabinets. Finish by straightening picture frames and pillows. That instantly makes your
home look well organized and under control.
Set the mood. Dim the lights and light a scented candle. If you cant see it, its not going to
bother you as much.

Weve all left the chore of cleaning up before a party till the last minute. But as
long as your house isnt a complete disaster, it only takes a few minutes to
make it look pulled together. We asked green-cleaning expert Leslie Reichert,
the author of The Joy of Green Cleaning, for her speed-cleaning checklist.
By Jillian Dempsey
veryone gets in makeup ruts. Its inevitable: You find a look that works on you;
you master it; you start doing itevery single day. For years and years. Ive seen
this happen to women of all ages, even makeup artists. Some ruts are more common than others (hello, pinkish-beige lip gloss!), but every single one of them is
worth reevaulating. Im not saying your lipstick or eye shadow isnt working for
you, but what feels like a risk today could be your favorite tomorrow. Of course, trying a
new look is scary, butdeep breathswell get through this together.

Clothes Call
If cleanliness is next to godliness, then professional organizers are near deities. Some of
the best in the field spill (well, tidily set forth)
their favorite tricks.
Sweep clean. Start by taking everything out
of your closet and drawers, says Washington,
D.C., organizer Alejandra Costello. Decide
right then whether it belongs in the keep or
donate pile. It should be a quick decision,
says Costello. If youre really conflicted over
something, chances are you wont miss it.
Pair like with like. Grouping similar items
togetherall your long-sleeved shirts in one
place, your pants in anotheris essential to
finding what you need, says New York City
organizing expert Molly Rain, who works with
editors and fashion insiders. Once youve
sorted your clothes into categories, organize
each group by color.
Switch to skinny hangers. I work with
designers and models who have tons of
clothes, and getting everything to fit on a
rack is a real issue, says Rain, who likes Joy
Mangano Huggable Hangers. Changing to
thin hangers instantly saves a third of the
spacea third. In New York City, thats huge.
Everything has its place. In her new book,
Kondo suggests placing anything made of a
fluttery material and fabrics that are quick
to wrinkle on hangers. But if something is
soft and pliable, she writes, then you know
it contains air. So, she explains, the best way
to reduce its volume is to fold it.

After Psycho, Janet Leigh never took another one. But for most of us,
a shower is a ritual thats both cleansing and calming. If youre American,
its highly likely you enjoyed one today. You probably think you have
the whole thing down, and we dont doubt youre acing the basics (water,
some soap, more water). But you can now step out of the shower
not just cleaner and calmer but also with a new hair color, sun-kissed
skin, and seriously silky limbs (and, if youre lucky, some brilliant
shower thoughtslike a scary-good screenplay idea). By Chloe Metzger

Water Color
Depending on your current hair shade, showers are about
to get a lot brighteror darker. John Friedas new Go Blonder
In-Shower Lightening Treatment is basically a shampoo to
make blondes blonder; the Visibly Deeper Colour Deepening
Treatment is a conditioner that gets brunettes brunetteier. The first has two chamberspop the top and low-pH
peroxide and high-pH shampoo combine to become
bleach. Its gentler than regular developer, but youll still
get hair a shade or two lighter, says cosmetic chemist
Joseph Cincotta. Our blonde tester loved the way it revived
her overdue-for-a-touch-up highlights and blended her
roots. The brunette treatment contains cationic dyes that
temporarily stick to the surface of your hair. It left our
brown-haired guinea pig with richer, shinier color that lasted
through three shampoos. LEXI NOVAK
SPLASH MASKS
They look like toners, smell like fruit juice,
and feel like water. The Blithe Patting
Water Packs also soften and brighten
your skin in about ten seconds. Technically,
youre supposed to fill your sink with
water, add a capful of the mask, then
splash your face for a few seconds.
We prefer this technique: Right before you
step out of the shower, pour half a
capful of the liquid into your palm and
pat it over your face for ten seconds.
Rinse your hands and give your face one
more pat-down. Bamsilky, wow-itreally-worked skin. The results are in the
formula, which is packed with lactic
acid and oils. Lactic acid instantly reacts
with your skin to soften it, says Gohara.
One Allure tester even noticed a major
reduction in the bumps on her cheeks.
And since you dont fully rinse your
face afterward, the oils keep softening
skin long after youve left the bathroom.

sodium lauryl sulfate, a detergent that sticks to you longer

While youre scanning the ingredient list, look for the words

Cocamidopropyl betaine is a coconut-oil-derived ingredient
that can decrease the potential irritation of the detergents

Dove Deep Moisture Body Wash.)
Do the boring stuff. Were not going to give you a dissertation here on how to shave, wash your special spots, and
shampoo and condition your hair, but we will say that nows
the best time to do it all, since the steam from the warm water
opens the hair cuticle, which helps conditioner smooth each
strand as much as possible on wet hair. And your leg stubble
is soft enough to shave without causing nicks or ingrowns.
POST-GAME
After the waters off, its all about maximizing the moisture.
Stay slick. By the time you towel off, the water that your
Pat down. You are not a car; you dont need to be buffed dry.
Each time you rub yourself with a towel, you scrape off the
protective epidermal layer of your skin cells, which basically
undoes everything you applied in the shower, says Gohara.
So when we say pat, we mean pat, as gingerly as you would at
teatime with the queen. You can also just bundle up in your
softest, plushest robe, and let the fabric gently wick away the
excess water from your skin.
Mask it again. Bring your mask routine full circle with a
sheet mask infused with glycerin or hyaluronic acid. One
made of cellulose or hydrogel will really drive the hydrating
ingredients into your skin and restore moisture. (We like
SkinCeuticals Biocellulose Restorative Masque.)

A SIMPLE
PLAN
SOFT
TWISTS
Twisting back two sections of
hair isnt enough to make a style
romantic. To create a true
Princess Bride look, you also need
mussed-up texture. At Altuzarra
(shown here), hairstylist Odile
Gilbert prepped the models hair
with Moroccanoil Hydrating
Styling Cream while it was damp,
then dried it and pulled back
the loose twists. As for that texture?
She roughed up the hair with
her hands. We want the hair to feel
like they havent washed it for
two or three days, Gilbert said.
112
ROMANCE
TANGLED
UPDOS
Nothing says whither and thou
as beautifully as a tousled updo.
At Alexander McQueen (shown
here), hairstylist Guido used
a needle to wrap thread around
tiny sections of hair, sewing
the hair together and pulling it so
the hairs go in different directions.
But its still very soft, he said.
At Alberta Ferretti, he punctuated
the twisty updo with gold elastics
and kept the hairline soft so it
doesnt feel too ordered and tight.
LANGUAGE
TO CREATE
A TRUE
PRINCESS
BRIDE LOOK,
YOU NEED
MUSSED-UP
TEXTURE.
TEASED PONYTAILS
Making the preferred hairstyle of
cheerleaders and the U.S. womens national
soccer team seem romantic is easier than
youd think. For the LC Lauren Conrad show
(below), hairstylist Kristin Ess secured
models hair into low ponytails, sprinkled
texturizing powder on top of their heads
(dry shampoo works, too), and gently
loosened the perimeter near the hairline,
she said. Allow for a little bit of fallout
to soften the look. To add height and
elegance, stylists suggest teasing at the
crown before pulling your hair back.
AIRY CURLS
In hairstylist-speak, effortless is code for 18 products, two assistants,
and two, no, three hours. But at Stella McCartney, hairstylist Eugene
Souleiman defied that clich by washing the models hair, moisturizing
it with a protein mask, parting it down the center or leaving it with
no part at all, and then...zip. He let it air-dry. For model Frederikke Sofie
(above), the result was gorgeous, airy curls. (To avoid frizz, hairstylists
suggest keeping hands, brushes, and combs far, far away from spirals.)
114
ADORNED HAIR
RIBBONS
A black satin ribbon is a versatile
little number. At the Mary Katrantzou
show (right), one was tied around
the hair and neck so it looked like a
nineteenth-century choker from the
front and held the hair down in a
sheet in back. At Oscar de la Renta
(far right), Guido parted the hair
in the middle before pulling it into a
low, loose ponytail and tying it with
a black ribbon. Were half putting
the ribbon in so it kind of falls, he
said. Its not like a bow; its a half
bow. He loosened the pieces at the
hairline so wisps floated as the
models walked down the runway.

For all her swagger, theres a warmth and a vulnerability to Lovato, who hugs

asking is important: One of the biggest challenges of interacting with fans, she
says, is the constant physical contact. Fans will oftentimes feel that they can
just up and wrap their arms around me, she says. I love hugging people, but
several hundred people in a row...its overwhelming.

You havent spoken to your college

Start by emailing that youve been

get there early, and start with the
apology. Im sorry goes a long way,
but it wont relieve the burden,

The
Good Life
CLEANSE YOUR
PALATE
Eating ethically is not code for kale salads massaged
by Buddhist monks. Mark Bittman, the author of Food Matters:
A Guide to Conscious Eating (Simon & Schuster), has advice
on how to make sure your dinner isnt destroying the planet.
What does it mean to eat ethically?
Food should be nutritious, affordable, and greenthat
is, it should minimize environmental impact. And the
humans and animals involved in its production, sale, or
consumption should be treated with respect.
What should we do to eat ethically?
Eat more plants. Even if they are farmed industrially, they
use far fewer resources than animal products. Seven or
eight years ago, I started eating a strict vegan diet of only
unprocessed plant foods during the day. I eat nuts, grains,
legumes, vegetables, and fruits from the time I get up until
dinnertime, and then I eat whatever I like at dinner.
So we dont have to be vegans?
Not at all. There is plenty of meat that is sustainable and
responsible nowadays. Farmers markets are great because
you can ask questions about the meat, like where it came
from. Always engage in conversation. If I find a good source
of meat, I buy lots of it and keep it in my freezer.
What do we do when we eat out?
Cross your fingers? I mean, theres no reason for a
restaurant to tell you the truth. A lot of restaurants will say
their chicken was hatched and raised humanely or that
its wild salmon, but theres no way for you to know for sure.
If a restaurant has an impeccable reputation, Chez
Panisse [in Berkeley] for example, then I think you can rest
assured. There are restaurants like that in every city.
Give It Up
Not all charities were created equal, nor do they
distribute resources equally. We asked ethicist
Peter Singer for guidance on giving. GiveWell
is an excellent site for researching charities,
he says. Singer himself donates primarily
to three. Oxfam is an advocate for the poor,
and the poor need advocates. The Against
Malaria Foundation distributes bed nets that
protect against malaria. And Mercy for Animals
undercover investigations have enabled
people to see what factory farming is really
like. Every person who boycotts factory-farmed
animal products is reducing suffering.

Melinda Gates on

Yes, we should be organizing pledge drives for A Walk to
Save the Endangered Species of Indigenous Communities
of Southern Cleveland in our vegan slippers and multicolored ribbons, but who has the time? Well, Melinda Gates.
As a cochair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation,
Gates has practical, creative solutions for giving back
when youre really busy. (She would know.)
P
eter Singer on Living a Moral Life
Living the good life means something very different when youre talking with the worlds
most renowned moral philosopher, Peter Singer, a professor of bioethics at Princeton
University and the author of The Most Good You Can Do (Yale University Press).
SORRY
ABOUT THAT
As Elton John told us
(and Mary J. Blige later
reminded us), sorry
seems to be the hardest
word. We cant say it for
you, but we can help you
say it better. Its a core
skill thats rarely taught,
says Frederic Luskin,
the director of the Stanford
University Forgiveness
Projects, which studies the
psychological and health
benefits of forgiveness.
STEP 1:
The apology.
Keep it simple and
you wont lose your
nerve or kick off a new
fight. Say these three
sentences verbatim:
Im sorry. I messed up.
Is there any way I
can make it up to you?
STEP 2:
The follow-through.
Well, you asked. Now
youve got to do it.
Be prepared to cancel
your evening plans,
take someones whiny
four-year-old for an
afternoonwhatever
its going to take.
STEP 3:
Move on.
Be careful not to let
someone bring up
mistakes you made in
the past, says
Luskin. You have
every right to say, Its
over and done
withwe finished
that. Lets deal
with the present.

Graphic

CHECK,
PLEASE
If youre looking at this
manicure thinking youre more
likely to solve a Rubiks Cube
than to successfully paint
perfect squares, we get it
and so did manicurist Naomi
Yasuda, who did the sporty
gingham look at Opening
Ceremony. Instead of trying
to make tiny boxes with the
tip of a brush, she used tape.
1. Paint your nails with
the lighter of the two colors
youre using.
2. Cut five three-inch strips
of Scotch tape and paint
the nonsticky side with the
darker color.
3. Once dry, cut the polished
tape into tiny squares.
4. Create a checkerboard
design by placing three
or four squares on each nail.
(Use tweezers for precision.)
5. Trim the tape at the edges
of your nails with cuticle
nippers. Seal with topcoat.
Nail art on runways in years past was intimidatingly elaborate, even for those with
the steadiest of hands. Perhaps it was out of this frustration that graphic
nail art was born. This seasons nails feature lines, dots, and squaressimple
shapes you can actually do yourself. Nail artist Miss Pop tells it like it is:
If you like nail art but dont have 45,000 years to spend painting your nails, these
designs are for you. The experts tell us how to DIY. By Kristie Dash

Slightly off-center stripes feed our
love of all things midi (yes,
midcalf skirts and knuckle rings
are staples). At Tanya Taylor
(above), manicurist Madeline Poole
painted two linesone thicker
than the otheron bare nails with
a striping brush. At 3.1 Phillip
Lim, she laid strips of silver nail
tape over brown polish and trimmed
the edges with cuticle nippers.
TIP TOP
The French manicure is clawing its
way back to chicwith a few
crucial tweaks. The most important
one: The line across the top of
your nail should not attempt to look
natural in any way. In fact, the
color should be as unexpected as
possible. At Monique Lhuillier
(right), manicurist Gina Edwards
paired Kelly-green tips with a sheerpink base. She painted the design
freehand, but French-manicure
stencil stickers (at any drugstore)
are great for creating a crisp line.

are lost, late, damaged, illegible, incomplete, postage due, misdirected, incorrect, garbled, or incompletely received, for any reason,
including by reason of hardware, software, browser, or network
failure, malfunction, congestion, or incompatibility at Sponsors
servers or elsewhere, will not be eligible. Sponsor, in its sole discretion, reserves the right to disqualify any person tampering with
the entry processes or the operation of the website. Use of bots or
other automated process to enter is prohibited and may result in
disqualification at the sole discretion of Sponsor. Sponsor further
reserves the right to cancel, terminate, or modify any promotion
not capable of completion as planned, including by reason of infection by computer virus, bugs, tampering, unauthorized intervention, force majeure, or technical failures of any sort. In the event
of a dispute, entries will be deemed submitted by the authorized
account holder of the email address submitted at the time of entry.
Authorized account holder is defined as the natural person who is
assigned to an email address by an Internet Access Provider, online
service provider, or other organization (e.g. business, educational
institute) that is responsible for assigning email addresses for the
domain associated with the submitted email address.
3. One (1) potential Grand Prize winner and one (1) potential First
Prize winner will be chosen in a random drawing from all entries
on or about March 15, 2016, and will be notified by phone, mail,
or email. If any potential winner cannot be contacted or does not
respond within five (5) days, or if the prize or prize notification is
returned as undeliverable, such potential winner forfeits all rights
to any prize and an alternate winner may be selected. All decisions
of the judges are final and binding in all respects.
4. The Grand Prize is two (2) round-trip coach airfare tickets from
the major commercial airport nearest the winners primary residence in the U.S. to Honolulu, Hawaii (not to exceed $2,000 total);
one (1) Premier room (double occupancy) for five (5) nights at
Turtle Bay Resort in Kahuku, Hawaii; round-trip airport transfers
in Hawaii; one (1) Thai Bodywork Session per person (winner and
guest); $150 daily activity and dining credit; resort service fee (five
nights); full access to resort amenities, including fitness facilities,
pools, and beaches. The total approximate retail value of the Grand
Prize package is $6,869, depending on exact itinerary. Actual value may vary based on various factors, including fluctuations in
price for airfare and/or accommodations, and distance between
the point of departure and the destination. All spa treatments are
subject to availability and must be scheduled and taken through
the spa. Winner must complete the trip by March 15, 2017, or
prize will be forfeited. Trip subject to availability; advanced reservation required and may be subject to certain other restrictions,
including without limitation blackout dates (including July 1,
2016, through July 4, 2016; December 18, 2016, through January
3, 2017; January 19, 2017, through January 31, 2017; February
24, 2017, through February 28, 2017). All expenses and incidental
travel costs not expressly stated in the package description above,
including but not limited to meals not included in the dining
credit, personal training, in-room charges (e.g. minibar, movies),
telephone calls, gratuities, incidentals, passenger tariffs or duties,
surcharges, airport fees, service charges or facility charges, personal charges at lodging, security fees, taxes or other expenses, are
the responsibility solely of winner. Transportation costs in excess
of $1,000 will be winners responsibility. Travel companion must
be eighteen (18) years of age or older as of the date of departure.
Travel companion must execute liability/publicity releases prior to
issuance of travel documents. Travel restrictions, conditions, and
limitations may apply. Sponsor will not replace any lost, mutilated,
or stolen tickets, travel vouchers, or certificates. Sponsor is not
responsible if spa treatments or activities are delayed, postponed,
or canceled for any reason, in which event that portion of prize is
forfeited in its entirety and no substitution will be provided except
as in Sponsors sole discretion. If, in the sole judgment of Sponsor,
air travel is not required due to winners proximity to prize location, ground transportation may be substituted for round-trip air
travel. Unless child of winner, travel companion must be 18 years
of age or older as of the date of departure.
5. The First Prize is a collection of Neutrogena skin-care products
chosen by Sponsor. The approximate retail value of the First Prize
is $305.77.
6. Income and other taxes, if any, are the sole responsibility of
the winners. No substitutions for the prizes, except by Sponsor,
in which case a prize of equal or greater value will be substituted.
Prizes are nontransferable.
7. Sweepstakes open to legal residents of the 50 United States and
the District of Columbia who are 18 years of age or older as of the
date of entry, except employees of Sponsor, the Strategy Group,
and their immediate families. Subject to all federal, state, and local
laws and regulations. Void outside of the 50 United States and the
District of Columbia, and where otherwise prohibited. Sponsor
is not responsible for errors in the administration or fulfillment
of this sweepstakes, including, without limitation, mechanical,
human, printing, distribution, or production errors, and may
modify or cancel this promotion based upon such error at its sole
discretion without liability.
8. Odds of winning depend on the number of entries received.
9. All entries become the property of Sponsor and will not be
acknowledged or returned. By providing your email address, you
grant Sponsor the right to send you commercial messages and
share your address with others, unless specified otherwise as indicated on the entry form. Except where prohibited, (i) acceptance
of prize constitutes consent to use winners names and likenesses
for editorial, advertising, and publicity purposes without further
compensation; (ii) potential winners may be required to sign an
affidavit of eligibility (including Social Security number) and liability/publicity release; and (iii) potential Grand Prize winner (and
travel companion) may be required to execute releases of Sponsor from any and all liability with respect to participation in the
sweepstakes and/or use of the prize. Affidavits and releases must
be returned within five (5) days of attempted notification or an
alternate winner may be chosen.
10. Participants agree to be bound by the above rules and regulations. Any violation of these rules may result in disqualification.
11. For the names of the winners, send a self-addressed stamped
envelope to Allure Readers Choice 2016 Sweepstakes Winners, One
