Design of a buried pipeline
A straight pressure pipeline (diameter 1 m; internal pressure 0 and 10 bar) has to be buried below
a road, within a ditch trench. The maximum allowable traffic weight acting at ground level on the
road is 5 tons per each way. The natural soil is silty sand (sat = 18 kN/m3, = 35) and the
average water table depth is 3 meters, below the ground surface.

Choose the material (steel, R/C, FRC) and the thickness of the pipe.
Choose the optimum dimension of the trench, with and without traffic loads
Choose the degree of compaction of the backfilling material
In presence of traffic load, check the pipeline for serviceability and ultimate limit state
condition both in the plane of the pipeline section and in the vertical plane along pipeline
axis
