A Message From Your State Deputy, Robert D. Weitzman

To My Columbian Family,
Happy New Columbian Year! 2015-16 was a great year and I thank you for all you did to make the year a success.
Now is the time for us to look forward to the 2016-17 Columbian Year and set New Year Resolutions. I would like to share
some of mine with you. I would like:
us to do more CHARITABLE work in our Church and communities
us to sell 100,000 Charitable and Benevolent (C&B) Books so we can expand and increase our charitable donations.
to see, Charity, Unity, Fraternity, Patriotism, service to our Church, Community and Mankind be the mantra throughout
our Country
to increase our support of our Seminarians, Priest and Postulants
our State to be number 1 in the order once again
the New York State Knights of Columbus to be the example of success that Supreme uses as an example when they
talk about what a jurisdiction should look like
to see us put in more ultra-sound machines throughout the state so when a lady has an unexpected pregnancy she
sees her living baby in the womb and will make the choice for LIFE
our programs of building the Domestic Church and strengthening families be instituted or improved on throughout the
state
to see, at the very least, each conference hold a Blue Mass for the men and women protecting us
us to continue to support the Christians and religious minorities in the Middle East so they can live without fear and
with hope
us to be an inspiration to our youth because they see us doing Gods work
us to be an organization that Brother Catholics seek out to join our ranks
us to be better family men and neighbors
to see our state recruit at least 4000 members
to see the ideology of our fraternity instilled into our culture
to be a better Catholic, and Brother Knight to my Columbian Family
all Knights and our families to vote for the President of the United States
all my brother Knights and their families to have a life filled with joy, laughter, faith, love,
good health, hope, family and Mercy
I hope we share in most of them and unite to make this world a better place for all.
God Bless you and keep you,
Vivat Jesu!
Bob Weitzman, SD

Prayer for the Canonization of Father Michael J. McGivney

God, our Father, protector of the poor and defender of the widow and orphan, you called your priest,
Father Michael J. McGivney, to be an apostle of Christian family life and to lead the young to the
generous service of their neighbor. Through the example of his life and virtue may we follow your Son,
Jesus Christ, more closely, fulfilling his commandment of charity and building up his Body which is the
Church. Let the inspiration of your servant prompt us to greater confidence in your love so that we may
continue his work of caring for the needy and the outcast. We humbly ask that you glorify your servant Father Michael
J. McGivney on earth according to the design of your holy will. Through his intercession, grant the favor I now
present (make your request here). Through Christ our Lord. Amen. Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be to the Father.

The Feast of the Assumption

Celebrated every year on August 15, the
Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary
commemorates the death of Mary and her bodily
assumption into Heaven, before her body could
begin to decay--a foretaste of our own bodily
resurrection at the end of time. Because it signifies
the Blessed Virgin's passing into eternal life,
it is the most important of all
Marian feasts and a Holy Day of Obligation.

by Sal Restivo, PSD, Membership Director
At the beginning of every fraternal year, we always re-assess and make the
changes we feel will benefit the order in New York. This year is no different. We
have added to our membership team with some familiar names and titles. Rich
Elias, Assistant State membership director will add to his duties by being the major
conference membership coordinator for Long Island. Bill Venturini will come on as
the major conference coordinator for down state and Bill Stewart will add to his
NCD duties and be the major conference coordinator for the upstate conference. These men will have minor conference
membership coordinators report to them a position added this year. We have
other brothers who have come on the
team who will be named and listed in the future. Also added this year are minor
conference coordinators for training whose responsibility it is to coordinator the training in their minor conference. We
will meet monthly on a phone conference to coordinate.
Our focus and goal is to improve membership recruitment. Last year we reached 97% of our goal. This year we are
aiming for 110% of our goal which is 3300 new or reactivated members. We ask that each member do his best to recruit
into our Order. Good luck! See below for the list of membership recruitment incentives for New York State:

125 Years
Brooklyn 60 Council Born September 3, 1891. Known as the Pioneer Council.
The oldest council in New York State. What an honor.
Brooklyn 60, still doing the dream of our founder Father Michael J. McGivney, 125
years later. His dreamto help our priests, families, church and community.
Brooklyn 60 doesnt need a fancy party to celebrate their 125th year. Instead, we
would like to celebrate Father McGivneys dream - to help the Catholic Church. A big
celebration costs money, time and lots of planning.
Brooklyn 60 is just asking for charity. Charity that will help others, charity that
will gladden our hearts because we now we helped someone else.
Brooklyn 60 is asking every council in New York State to make a donation of $125
- to celebrate the 125 years of existence of the Knights of Columbus in New York State.
Just make out a check for $125. It will just take a minute. NO getting all dressed up to
party. NO travelling miles. NO eating or drinking too much. NO listening to speech after
speech. What could be easier? Just make out a check for $125 - thats all.
The donation will be made to: The Shrine of Our Lady of Martyrs. Where the first
Jesuit martys of North America died. Where the first Native American Saint (Kateri)
was born. The Shrine dates back to 1885.
The President of the Board of Directors - is our own PSD Carmine Musumeci.
Please make checks payable to: Friends of the Shrine of Our Lady of Martyrs, Inc.
Mail checks to Carmine Musumeci, at 553 2nd Avenue, New York, NY 10016.
A Pilgrimage to the Shrine is scheduled for September 17, 2016.
Lets make New York State and the Knights of Columbus show the world about
charity and Christian work. Lets be proud to be Knights. Lets show what the Knights of
Columbus is really about. CHARITY.
Thank you for your donation to charity and Father McGivneys dream.

Best of 3 for C&B

Many of us are a familiar with the New York State Annual C&B Program, but how
many of us are familiar with is this years new 2016 C&B campaign slogan?
Again Best of 3 for C&B
In order to maximize our success we asking all councils to consider our Best of 3
Program.
Simply put, we are asking councils to match their best C&B performance over the
last 3 years. Think about it. This is a very achievable goal. After all, we are not asking
you to do anything you havent done before. Stated differently, If you did it before, you
can do it again.
The Best of 3 Program sets goals on several levels. There are goals on the
Council, District & the Conference level. This shows that everyone, is an important part of
the C&B team.
Conference C&B Vice Chairman, District Deputies, and Grand Knights will all
receive their unique goal. If these goals are reached, your council, district and/or
conference are eligible to receive additional funds for a charity of your choice. More
specific details will be provided to the DD's around mid-August.
At this time, however, let us briefly provide you with a general idea of how this
program works.
COUNCIL INCENTIVE:
When a councils C&B total for the year matches their best performance from the past
3 years, they are eligible for a conference wide drawing.
Exception: When a council best performance for the past 3 years is 10 books or less
then instead a Best of 3 Goal, that council must reach their C&B Bonus (quota)
amount. If they do so, then they are eligible for the drawing.
Selected winners from the drawing will receive a check for $500 made payable to
an approved charity of their choice.
DISTRICT INCENTIVE:
When a districts C&B total for the year matches their best performance from the past
3 years, then the DD (in conjunction with the councils in his district) are eligible for
a conference wide drawing.
Exception: When a district best performance for the past 3 years is 100 books or less
then instead a Best of 3 Goal, then that district must reach their C&B Bonus
(quota) amount. If they do so, then they are eligible for the drawing.
Selected winners from the drawing will receive a check for $500 made payable to
an approved charity of its choice.
Page 21

CONFERENCE INCENTIVE
When a Conferences C&B total for the year equals 90% of the amount which reflects all the councils in their conference matching their Best of 3 Goal, then
that Conference will receive a $1,000 check made payable to an approved
charity of its choice.
Conference goals are shown on the table below.
In the meantime, please do your best to get your C&B Program off to a good
start.
QUICK START DRAWING
The Quick Start drawing was held on Sunday July 17. Many areas throughout
the state showed favorable results compared to 2015. Some did not.
However, if the state wide C&B Drive is to be successful, we would like to see
a positive effort from all areas. The C&B Standings, as of the Quick Start Drawing, is
shown below.
If you got off to a good start, please continue to work hard. This hard work will
make your good start the improvement over the prior year.
If you started slowly, please don't get discouraged. Everyone likes the team
that comes from behind to win. Therefore, "be that team"
Lets make C&B more successful so that we may be more charitable!
Thank you.
Anthony Ippolito
C&B Director

A special thanks to all the Golfers, Sponsors, and Dinner
Guests that attended the NYS Deputy Golf Classic this

reasonable cost. Too many people to thank, but special
thanks to the committee who worked all day to make
this a success. Past Conference Chairman Frank Casillo,

the person who is always there for us John Joseph.
The generosity of everyone helped make a nice

program gets the Knights
involved in their community by
organizing food drives and
helping out at Food Pantries
and Soup Kitchens.
The Food for Families
program always raises the most awareness around the
holidays but remember its a problem for families
throughout the year.
One in six Americans struggle with hunger daily.
The Knights can help these families by participating in
the Food for Families program.
Remember to fill out your Food for Families
form and mail the original form to the Supreme Council
Department of Fraternal Service with a copy to the
State Program Director.
For every $500.00 or 1000 pounds of food, the
council or assembly is eligible for a refund of $100.00
up to a maximum of $500.00 for the fraternal year.
Please take this opportunity to get involved and
help others.

Suffolk Council Presents Service Awards to

Graduating Seniors
Msgr. Frank Schneider (pictured left) pastor of St. John the Baptist Church, and
SK Robert Madaia PGK FDD (pictured right) Grand Knight of the Fr. William J. Crowley
Council (#5817) in Wading River, New York, with six of the eight winners of the
Lt. Michael O'Shea Service Award.
The council established this award seven years ago in honor of one of our members.
Mike OShea was a charter member of our council who had served in the Air Force
during World War II. As a B-17 Navigator, Lt. O'Shea was shot down twice and was
confined to a German POW camp. Lt. O'Shea received 2 Purple Hearts, The Silver Star
and other medals in recognition of his service to our country. He continued his service
to the community, the parish and the local fire department.
In the seven years that this award has been given out, 46 graduating high school students,
who were active in one of the many parish youth ministries up to and including their
senior year in High School have been rewarded and given a small token of
appreciation in order to help them on their next steps on their journeys through life.
The award is funded through an Annual Charity Golf Outing, which is dedicated to a

Prayer to End Abortion

Lord God, I thank you today for the gift of my life,
And for the lives of all my brothers and sisters.
I know there is nothing that destroys more life than abortion,
Yet I rejoice that you have conquered death by the Resurrection of Your Son.
I am ready to do my part in ending abortion.
Today I commit myself Never to be silent,
Never to be passive, Never to be forgetful of the unborn.
I commit myself to be active in the pro-life movement,
And never to stop defending life
Until all my brothers and sisters are protected,
And our nation once again becomes
A nation with liberty and justice
Not just for some, but for all.

Through Christ our Lord. Amen!
