Peer threatens to quit party as anger
mounts over Chakrabarti peerage

A LABOUR peer has threatened to

quit the party if Jeremy Corbyn is
re-elected, as anger grows over the
award of a peerage to the head of
Labours anti-Semitism inquiry.
News that Shami Chakrabarti was
Corbyns only nominee for the House
of Lords as part of David Camerons
resignation honours provoked widespread anger with the Board of
Deputies branding it the whitewash
for peerages scandal.
The report by Chakrabarti, the former head of Liberty, concluded in
June that Labour was not overrun by
anti-Semitism and was criticised for
failing to go far enough on contemporary anti-Semitism.
Lord Parry Mitchell, who was ennobled in 2000, wrote in The Times that
he found allegations of anti-Semitism
in the party distressing as a Jew.
I had hoped that the Chakrabarti

report would get to the bottom of allegations of anti-Semitism; sadly Ms

Chakrabarti produced an insepid
whitewash, he claimed.
Indeed she seems to have done
her masters bidding to absolve the
party of blame. Her prize? The only
Labour peerage awarded by Corbyn.
While Mitchell said he owes the
party a great deal, he added: I
have come to the painful conclusion
that were Mr Corbyn to be reelected, then I will have to resign my
membership. I cannot remain a member of a party that goes against such
a crucial issue that I hold dear.
Corbyn, who wants to see the Lords
reformed, had previously pledged not
to nominate anyone. Amid criticism of
the timing of the award, Corbyns office refuted any suggestion that the
peerage was discussed prior to the reports publication.

Liberty!
But the Chief Rabbi said the credibility of the report lies in tatters. He
said: Shami Chakrabarti has a proud
record of public service, but in accepting this peerage, the credibility
of her report lies in tatters and the
Labour Partys stated intention, to unequivocally tackle anti-Semitism, remains woefully unrealised.
Marie van der Zyl, vice president of
the Board of Deputies, said: It is beyond disappointing that Shami
Chakrabarti has been offered, and

BERGER LOSES MAYOR BID

LUCIANA BERGER has lost her bid
to become Labours candidate for
Liverpools mayor.
The former shadow cabinet minister,
who left her role in Jeremy Corbyns
top team as part of a wave of
resignations, was defeated by Steve
Rotheram for the chance to stand for
the influential position. The current
elected mayor Joe Anderson was the
third candidate.
Rotheram, who has served as Corbyns parliamentary private secretary,
said: As metro mayor, I will put social
justice at the heart of my administration, something which Ive been
passionate about all my career.
Devolution presents us with a
unique opportunity to make decisions
locally, in the interests of local people,
to ensure each person within our
districts has the best chance in life.
Berger who served as the first
shadow cabinet member for mental
health until last month previously
said the role was a massive opportunity to unite the region and launch it
onto the international stage.
The result means a clean sweep
for male candidates in mayoral races
across the country.
That includes Andy Burnham, who
overcame a challenge from Jewish
Labour MP Ivan Lewis, to be Labour
candidate for the mayor of Greater

Manchester.
The MP for Bury South came third in
the contest, behind interim mayor
Tony Lloyd, and shadow home secretary Burnham.
Lewis said: Andy will have the full
support of me and my supporters in
the campaign which lies ahead. GM
needs Labour Mayor so we can fight
inequality and create a beacon of social justice in an era of right-wing Tory
government.
Burnham said: I thank our members for the faith they have shown in
me, adding that he will repay it by
devoting all my energy to uniting the
Labour family here, working to win
back the voters we have lost and
building a policy programme with
broad appeal.
He also distanced himself from the
national Labour leadership race
between Jeremy Corbyn and Owen
Smith.
Speaking during a question-and-answer session with the media, Mr Burnham reiterated his belief that now is
not the right time for a leadership
election as he committed to remaining neutral during the fight between
the two contenders.
The result of the Labour leadership
contest will be announced at the
partys annual conference, held in
Liverpool next month.

Russians behind stray done

RUSSIA HAS owned up to operating a stray
drone seen flying over Israel three weeks ago,
which prompted a military response from the
Israeli Air Force at the time.
The unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) which
was at first thought to belong to Hezbollah,
passed over northern Israel mistakenly on 17
July, according to Israels Haaretz newspaper.
Israel fired two Patriot surface-to-air missiles
at it, but missed, and an Israeli F-16 fighter jet
was then scrambled and fired an air-to-air
missile at it, but also missed, before the UAV
disappeared back into Syria.
According to reports, the Russian military
now says human error caused the drone to
stray into Israeli territory over the Golan, but
defence analysts say it may have been the
Russians testing Israels defensive capabilities.
This is the first time Israel has shot at a Russian aircraft since the latter became involved in
the Syrian conflict in September last year.

Charedi school remains open

A CHAREDI SCHOOL in Stamford Hill remains
open, six months after the Department for
Education called for it to be shut down.
Unregistered independent school Talmud
Torah Tashbar was criticised in February for
failing to meet minimum standards required
and promoting cultural and ethnic insularity
owing to a curriculum almost exclusively
rooted in the study of the Torah.
In March, Hackney Council said it understood
the pupils were now being home-schooled and
the building was only being run as community
centre. A spokesperson for Talmud Torah Tashbar said: The school will be closing down
because people keep giving us trouble.

Josh Simons, a former policy adviser who is Jewish, is
alleged to have told
Chakrabarti that someone referred to a Jewish conspiracy in the office.
It is not clear who made
the alleged comments, or
when, but it is believed to
have been made in response
to Ken Livingstone being approached by John Mann MP,
the chairman of the All-Party
Parliamentary Committee on
Anti-Semitism, in light of the
former mayors comments
that Hitler was a Zionist.
The Sunday Times reports
the friend of Simons as
saying he told Chakrabarti
that Corbyns chief of strategy Seamas Milne had at
best a blind spot with anti-

Semitism and at worst a wilful disregard for it.

Chakrabarti, who has been
offered a peerage by the
Labour Party, said her remit
was not to investigate individual instances and allegations, but to come up with
recommendations and guidelines for future conduct.
However, the friend said
Simons was left angry when
she was named as Labours
nominee for the House of
Lords, saying: When Josh
read the report he was bitterly
disappointed;
he
thought it was a whitewash,
but when Shamis peerage
was confirmed he was angry
he thinks it was a classic
stitch-up.
Corbyns office dismissed
the reports as false and
part of the campaign against
his leadership.
A spokesman added: The
person making these claims
is a disgruntled former member of staff.

A SLATE OF left-leaning candidates

including Rhea Wolfson [pictured] have
been elected on to Labours National Executive Committee (NEC).
Six spaces on the NEC for representatives from constituency Labour parties
have been filled, and all six winners are
deemed to be on the left, in what many
will see as a boost for Labour leader
Jeremy Corbyn.
Those elected are Ann Black (100,999
votes), Christine Shawcroft (97,510
votes), Claudia Webbe (92,377 votes),
Darren Williams (87,003 votes), Rhea
Wolfson (85,687 votes) and Peter Willsman ( 81,863 votes).
The NEC governs the Labour Party, but
its relationship with the leadership has
been under strain in recent months.
It voted by a majority of 18 to 14 earlier this year for Corbyn to have an automatic place on the leadership ballot

Meanwhile, the NECs Procedures
Committee says it will appeal against a
High Court ruling that said new members
should have the right to vote in Labours
leadership contest between Corbyn and
Owen Smith.
Allies of Corbyn attacked the decision
to appeal, with shadow chancellor John
McDonnell condemning a small clique of
people behind closed doors, many of
whom have openly expressed their opposition to Jeremy Corbyns leadership.
Responding to the election of six new
members to the NEC, a spokesman for
the Jeremy for Labour campaign said:
Our campaign would like to congratulate those new members to the Labour
Partys NEC, and thank those former
members who have served our party, and
also thank those members who stood
unsuccessfully.

members on Labours National Executive
Committee (NEC). I was supported by
organisations of the Labour left Momentum amongst others and also the Jewish
Labour Movement. As a left-wing Jew, I am
honoured to have the support of both of
these communities and I will not betray the
faith they have put in me.
I know there are concerns in the Jewish
community about what these NEC results
mean, but I do not think there needs to be.
The six newly-elected members repre-

sent a wide diversity of backgrounds and

political opinion. We are all committed to
a democratic and pluralist Labour Party,
where different views are respected.
When it comes to Jewish issues explicitly, as the sole Jewish CLP representative,
I intend to take the lead. I am committed
to the full implementation of Shami
Chakrabatis recommendations. This must
happen immediately. But these are largely
legalistic and procedural and do not tackle
the political issues. So above that, I am
keen to ensure that our party is an environment which is hospitable to both Jews and
Zionists. The environment of the Labour
Party is the most fundamental issue, but
also the most difficult to tackle. Since
being elected, some of those to my right
have been aggressive and personally in-

sulting to a level that I hope no one has to

experience. There is a huge amount of
bad feeling in the party and that comes
out in unconstructive forums and language that must be tackled.
I will fight for a Labour Party that prioritises communication and open debate.
Too long have Jewish members felt
excluded from spaces because of language
being used that crosses the line into antiSemitism.
The only way to tackle this once and for
all is through dialogue. This means forums where members from communities
that have not been in a room together
before, work together and where all Jewish members from across the political
spectrum help the Labour Party become
a truly open space.

A TORY MP has asked the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards to

check if Jeremy Corbyn is in breach
of the Members Code of Conduct
for not registering funds raised by
a group whose founder praised
Hamas.
It comes after it emerged last
weekend that Friends of Al-Aqsa,
which was founded by Ismail Patel
19 years ago, raised 10,000 for
Corbyn at a fundraising dinner last
year, as reported by The Observer.
During hostilities in Gaza in 2009,
Patel said: Hamas is no terrorist
organisation. The reason they hate
Hamas is because they refuse to be
subjugated, occupied by the Israeli
state. We salute Hamas for standing
up to Israel.

Iron Domes Tamir interceptors
to the US military, which operates almost 800 military bases
in more than 70 countries.

with electro-optic sensors and
adjustable steering fins for
tracking and destroying incoming enemy rockets, missiles,
artillery and mortars.

pretend a peerage under these circumstances doesnt stink.

ISRAELS SUPREME court has

stripped an Israeli family of
a collection of Franz Kafka manuscripts, ruling that the documents
should be transferred to the countrys National Library.
The National Library said the
court ruled it was the preferred
location for the trove of unpublished Kafka works. The library
said it would make the manuscripts accessible to the general
public. The decision puts an end
to a years-long Kafkaesque court-

room saga, after two lower courts

arrived at the same decision.
Eva Hoffe received the manuscripts, among other works, from
her mother, the secretary of
Kafkas confidant Max Brod, who
kept and published Kafkas works
after his death. The family had argued that it was in rightful possession of the manuscripts.
Kafka authored surreal short
stories and novels, the most famous of which is arguably The
Metamorphosis.

OUR BITTER LIBEL BATTLE

WITH ANTI-ISRAEL IMAM
JEWISH NEWS published an opinion piece in
July 2015, headlined: Where are the mainstream
Muslim voices?
Written by editor Richard Ferrer, it addressed
then prime minister David Camerons call to tackle
non-violent extremists who radicalise young people and overpower mainstream Muslim opinion.
Ferrer wrote: The danger [of radicalisation]
does not come from mad mullahs such as Anjem
Choudary. Rather, consider a popular mainstream
Imam like Ajmal Masroor who preaches that Zionism stands for racism and Jewish supremacist
ideology warns of abusers in the UK Jewish lobby and the Jewish supremacist ideology that holds our government hostage
Rather than accept Jewish News invitation of
a right of reply, lawyers for the popular Imam,
who regularly appears on television and leads
services at mosques across London, threatened
to sue Jewish News for libel effectively gagging this newspaper from reporting further on
an important and timely issue of public concern.
After five months of exchanges between Masroors legal team and Jewish News lawyer Mark
Lewis, partner at law firm Seddons, the one-year
limitation on libel claims came to an end on 25
July without Masroor serving his threatened
defamation lawsuit finally allowing Jewish News
to make his legal threats known to the public.
Responding to the libel challenge, Ferrer said:
The point of my column was to show how British
Muslim opinion can be overpowered by extremists posing as moderates. By attacking this viewpoint, the Imam proved my point. The concept of
Jewish supremacist ideology is pure bigotry. The
Imams reference to the abuse of Jewish identity
to hold our government hostage is textbook
anti-Semitism. His views are the problem, not the
solution. There is no place for such anti-Semitism
in society. If the Imam wanted to constructively
engage in a debate he should accept our offer of
a right of reply an offer that remains open.
A Spokesman for the Community Security
Trust said: We are having an increasing number
of open and constructive conversations with
Muslims in which they admit to having, or having
had, no knowledge of what Zionism actually is:
other than an entirely hateful grasp of the word,
such as that expressed by Ajmal Masroor.
We need our communities to better understand each other and imams have a crucial role
to play, moving beyond such limited and negative stereotypes of something that is for many
Jews just a basic part of their identity.
Masroor leads prayer services at mosques in
Palmers Green, Goodge Street, West Ealing and
Haringey and is a regular media commentator
on issues concerning British Muslims.
Quotes from a speech Masroor gave at Palmers
Green mosque in August 2014, which were not
published in Ferrers column, state: Zionism cannot be accepted in any narrative. We didnt accept
this in South Africa, did we? We couldnt accept
such supremacist ideology proposed by anybody.
It is no different to any extremist ideology today
my brothers and sisters Zionism is not compatible with anything modern, anything old, anything
spiritual. Zionism is empty Judaism. Zionism is
against Judaism Be smart. Like our Jewish brothers have been. And smarter than the Zionist lobby
has been Were not condemning the Jewish
people for being smart we are saying we need
to be smart but we dont want to become abusers
like the Zionist lobby. We dont want to be abusers
and hated by the world for being abusive.

Where are the true Muslim moderates?

MPS PRETEND they dont know what motivates people to swap suburbia for Syria to become psycho killers or rape slaves of psycho
killers. They walk on eggshells for fear of causing offence.
Well, this week, the prime minister finally did
what no other politician has the guts to do. Instead of being politically correct he was just,
simply, correct.
Unveiling the Governments new counter extremism strategy, David Cameron declared war
on Muslim, non-violent extremists who radicalise young people and, overpower mainstream voices.
Welcome words indeed. The trouble is, the
very reason MPs are scared to speak out is
that in British Muslim society non-violent extremists who radicalise young people are
part of the mainstream.
Forget mad mullahs like Anjem Choudary.
Their upside-down opinions are outside Muslim society and, indeed, sanity.
Rather, consider a piece of work like Ajmal
Masroor, a popular publicity-grabbing imam
who regularly crawls out of his moral cesspit
to appear on cosy BBC sofas posing as the
voice of progressive Islam.
Last August, Londons Palmers Green
mosque, a moderate institution whose congregants do interfaith work with the local
Jewish community, rolled out the red carpet
to Masroor, who spent 30 minutes educating
his hushed audience about abusers in the

UK Jewish lobby, the Jewish supremacist

ideology that holds our government
hostage and how Obama has been
bought by Zionists.
His filthy tirade, [it starts in Arabic but moves
to English after a few seconds] ends with an impassioned plea to Keep struggling or you
wont enter paradise. Masroors hands are
not bloodstained, but his mouth surely is.
Now consider the public statements of mainstream community organisations that have illserved British Muslims for decades.
The Muslim Council of Britains (MCB) infamous official response to the 7 July 2005 London bombings still chills the bones 10 years on:
We do naturally feel deeply for the sufferings... yet we also remind ourselves of the
verse of the Quran, O you who believe! Be
steadfast witnesses for Allah in equity We
call on the international community to work
towards just and lasting peace settlements
and help eliminate the grievances that seem
to nurture a spiral of violence.
In other words, the 52 victims probably had it
coming.
It should be stressed that that was a decade
ago and the MCB has come a long way since
such comments and its boycott of Holocaust
Memorial Day.
Todays soundtrack can be just as sinister.
On Monday, in response to Camerons constructive call for a united front, Asghar
Bukhari, the paranoid founder of the Muslim
Public Affairs Committee who last month accused Zionists of creeping into my home
and stealing my shoe, said: The vast majority of Muslim communities see David Cameron,
his government and his policies as being at the

forefront of alienating them, demonising them

and pushing them into a corner.
Why constructively engage when you can
take knee-jerk offence?
So where are all these "mainstream" voices
of reason being overpowered by radicals?
Where are all the progressives determined to
put paradise-seeking genies like Ajmal Masroor firmly back in their bottle?
They exist, but you can count those who put
their head above the parapet on one hand,
with fingers to spare.
A Muslim leader is yet to emerge to take the
mantle of the late, great Zaki Badawi. Before his
death in 2006, this brave enemy of extremism,
who coined the helpful term British Islam, told
the Guardian: I want the government to help
me train better imams. Its cheaper than having
to combat the effect of bad imams.
Badawi was shocked at the number of Muslim leaders who cant speak English being imported from Saudi Arabia. He firmly believed
British Islam must be rooted in British values.
Nine years on, Badawis legacy lies in tatters.
Todays default Muslim position on ISIS could
hardly be more passive: Were not responsible for the extremism of others so why must
we apologise for it?
Every chance to declare all-out war on the malignant cancer in their midst is greeted with embarrassment, obfuscation or obscene silence.
For all David Camerons big plans and brave
words, only the revival of Badawis brand of
progressive British Islam can prevent growing
numbers of young Muslims from teetering on
the edge of a moral precipice.
Until then the loonies will always have the
loudest voices.

Christian charity boss bankrolled Hamas

THE GAZA-BASED head of a major
Christian charity supported by UK aid
has been charged with funnelling millions of pounds to Hamas.
Mohammed Halabi, head of World
Vision in the Gaza Strip, was arrested in
June by Israels internal security service
Shin Bet and will now appear before
a court, charged with running a sophisticated funding mechanism.
Israel alleges that Halabi was a Hamas
mole planted in the organisation
10 years ago who later rose to head it,
a position from which he secretly channelled up to 5million a year to Hamas
personnel, including armed fighters.
Charged with funding terror, he is alleged to have diverted up to 60 percent
of the charitys Gaza budget to the
Strips rulers since 2010, including
about 1m in annual payments to the
groups armed wing.
The Israeli Embassy in London said
some of the British funds had been used
to build a Hamas military outpost in the
northern Gaza Strip. A spokesman
claimed: Some $80,000 received from
the UK went to construction costs of the
base, paid in cash, while salaries were
paid to terrorists who worked in the

comment, but Jewish leaders in the UK

uses income to build up its military capability, including the construction of

help needy children in Gaza, only to find
out they were duped and their money
stolen and diverted to fund Hamass terrorist activities. Its outrageous.
Jewish Leadership Council chief executive Simon Johnson said: These allegations must be investigated and, if
proven, the international community
must respond. Accusations of this
nature raise serious questions regarding
DfID and the Disasters Emergency Committee funding.
A UK government spokesperson
said: DfID does not provide any funding to World Vision UK for its work in
the Occupied Palestinian Territories,
including in Gaza.

THE ALLEGATION that the director of

an internationally respected and
funded non-governmental organisation (NGO) has been brazenly siphoning international aid money to the
terror activities of Hamas is chilling.
The Hamas-trained director of
the Gaza branch of World Vision,
Mohammed Halabi, has allegedly
diverted up to $50million to the terror organisation over a period of
years.
Hamas has reportedly been receiving as much as 60 percent of the
NGOs annual budget through the
creation of fictitious humanitarian
projects.
The alleged misappropriation and
abuse of international aid is the
latest demonstration of Hamas contempt of its own people. Instead
of building schools and hospitals,

Hamas continues to build terror tunnels and rearms in preparation for another attack on Israel.
Worryingly, the UK via the Department for International Development
(DfID) reportedly gave 2 million
to groups in Gaza in 2014, including
World Vision, when it matched
charitable contributions pound for
pound made by well-meaning Brits to
a Disaster Emergency Committee
appeal.
The Department has conceded it
cannot guarantee that British taxpayers money has not been given to
Hamas. There will be some very red
faces in Whitehall in the wake of these
reports.
This tragic story is symptomatic of
the wider abuse of aid money.
Conservative Friends of Israel (CFI)
has campaigned to raise awareness of
these issues for years, from the Palestinian Authority (PA)s payment of
salaries to convicted terrorists to
NGOs that celebrate terrorism.
DfID money goes to some important projects in the Palestinian Terri-

tories. However, not all projects are

created equal. Indeed, CFI recently
unearthed evidence of UK-funded
Palestinian NGOs endorsing violence
and praising so-called martyrs.
Ibdaa Cultural Center, for example, received 5,602 from the UK in
the past financial year.
A cursory glance at its Facebook
page revealed it was proudly hosting
a photo exhibition in the West Bank
of Palestinian terrorists, including
some of those behind deadly attacks
in the last year.
Somewhere along the line, the
scrutinisation process is failing and
due diligence measures are falling
below the necessary standards.
Its hardly a secret that corruption
is rife in the Palestinian Territories.
Hamas has for years appropriated
construction materials intended for
civilian purposes to construct tunnels
deep into Israeli communities with
the express intention of murder and
terror.
Polling shows that increasing numbers of West Bank Palestinians dislike

the PA as a result of perceived

corruption. This distrust was encapsulated by the strong reaction meted to
the extravagant new presidential
palace complex for Mahmoud Abbas.
Faced with such gross abuses, we
appeal to new Secretary of State,
Priti Patel, to ensure that DfID exercises far stricter oversight of aid
given to Palestinian organisations,
to ensure it reaches projects that
work for peace rather than hate. It is
encouraging that Priti is showing an
eagerness to tackle these issues.
It is high time DfID reconsiders its
current aid policy to the Palestinian
Territories to ensure the UK supports
peaceful coexistence projects, such
as the extraordinary Save A Childs
Heart. As it stands, a mere 0.2 percent of the 72m that the UK gives
per annum is allocated to such projects. Priti has already pledged to
look into this fantastic organisation
and others.
Both the British taxpayer and
Palestinian residents have been badly
let down.

LORD ALF Dubs, who entered

the UK after fleeing Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia, has called
on the government to show
more humanity and intelligence to child refugees than
the Chamberlain government
did to the Jewish people.
In a letter, also signed by actresses Vanessa Redgrave and
Aislin McGuckin, Lord Dubs requested Theresa Mays urgent
intervention in reuniting children living in the Jungle camp
in Calais with their families in
the UK.
The trio said post-Brexit Britain
offered a platform for politicians to make progress with the
refugee crisis, as they delivered
the letter to Downing Street.
The letter, addressed to the
new prime minister, states:
I deeply hope that your government may show more humanity
and intelligence than the Chamberlain government showed
to the Jewish people until after
Kristallnacht in mid-November
1938.

NUS delegate calls Zionists subhuman rats

AN EDINBURGH University
student elected as the institutions delegate to the national
student union has found
himself the centre of attention
after calling Zionists subhuman rats in a social media
rant.
Daniel Yahia, a Celtic Football Club supporter who
describes himself as a student, communist and unrepentant Fenian b*stard, was
reacting to images posted
on Facebook by the clubs
Israeli player Nir Bitton in support of the IDF and Israeli
Prime Minister Benjamin
Netanyahu.
In comments reported by
The Tab, he wrote: Sick of
seeing Celtic fans creaming
themselves over Nir Bitton.

elected National Union of Students delegate defended this
as a Belfast term for terminating someones employment.
Asked to explain his comments, Yahia, who has not
taken up his NUS role, said:

contrasts with equality, solidarity and many other factors
which make up the Celtic
support.
He said his comments were
intemperate and perhaps a
little much, but denied they

were racist or anti-Semitic and

described the Israeli regime as

do not have one religion
or nationality. You can have

Bitton, who served in the
IDF while playing for FC Ashdod, has previously provoked

Owen Smith booed in anti-Semitism talk

LABOUR LEADERSHIP challenger Owen Smith was booed
and heckled as he criticised
Jeremy Corbyns handling of
recent examples of anti-Semitism by party members during
the pairs first hustings.
The leadership challenger
said it has been absolutely appalling to see anti-Semitism in
our ranks, absolutely disgraceful. If I was leader of the Labour
Party, I would have zero tolerance for it. Zero. Anybody

Corbyn advocated a due

investigation and that, when

a case is proved against somebody, then they dont have a

place within the party.
Smith agreed, but said: We

out. I dont think our leadership
has been strong enough.
Corbyn replied: Many of the
cases investigated predate my
leadership by quite a long way,
but I wanted action taken on it,
thats why I ordered an inquiry.
Asked whether it was a media
witch-hunt, Smith was jeered
and booed when he said: Ive
been in Labour for 30 years. Ive
only remembered in the last
nine months a discussion about
anti-Semitism in the party.

Jewish studies plan for non-Jewish schools

EDUCATION CHIEFS may run
Jewish programmes in non-Jewish schools in Barnet this September, to deal with a shortage of
Jewish secondary school places.
Rabbi David Meyer, the former
Hasmonean headteacher who
now runs Partnerships for Jewish
Schools (PaJeS), a division of the
Jewish Leadership Council, said
he was actively exploring the
option.
Up to a dozen Jewish children
still have no Jewish secondary
school place, and Meyer said
mainstream schools could take
them on with a Jewish studies
provision.

His idea may be just a stop-gap

if plans go ahead to open
Kedem, a new Jewish secondary
school in Barnet from September
2017, but parents of those who
are missing out say the situation
at present is stressful.
Last month, a PaJeS report on
Jewish secondary school places
highlighted significant overprovision in Redbridge but significant underprovision in northwest London, identifying a gap of
about 90 places, or three classes.
In an assessment, the report
stated: We expect this level of
under provision to continue for
the next five years or so

found it frightening that
people might not feel able
to voice their opinions for
fear of criticism.
I think people are
aggressive towards people
who have ideas and different things they believe in.

where you cant say this
and you cant say that. But
we are very close to that
and I think its rather frightening. It would be horrible
if were not allowed to say

Couples 20,000 for hospice in sons memory Anger at absence of Charedi views
A JEWISH COUPLE from north
London have helped raise more
than 20,000 for a childrens
hospice in memory of their baby
son, who was born with an incurable brain tumour.
Steven and Rachel Brodie from
Totteridge raised the money for
Haven House after he pledged to
run the Royal Parks Half Marathon
in Hyde Park on 9 October.
He will be running in memory
of Isaac, who was born in February, just after doctors realised he
had a tumour on his brain.
After two weeks of care at
University College London and
Great Ormond Street Hospitals,
the family was told nothing could
be done, and Isaac was transferred to Haven House, where
his ventilator was removed.
We were terrified but,
against all odds he fought for
his life, and was able to breathe
on his own for six days. He was

a true champion and extraordinarily brave, recalls Steven.

He added: One of the most
special gifts the hospice gave
us was the chance to take Isaac
outside for a walk to the local
coffee shop for the first time.
We cant emphasise enough
how wonderful this was.
The couple, members of

Muswell Hill Synagogue, said

the shul was very supportive,
delivering food and offering
support. Members are still in
touch and Rabbi Mason was
there for both spiritual guidance
and friendship, he said, adding
that Camp Simcha was also very
generous with offers of support.
The hospice provided family

accommodation, so the three of

them could live together, ordering kosher food and all additional
support, so Steven and Rachel
could dedicate the time to Isaac.
It was a privilege to support
the family during this difficult
time, said care director Eileen
White. Rachel and Stevens
incredible fundraising will enable us to help other families.
Steven added: The most important gift was the confidence
and ability they gave us to make
sure our little soldier was comfortable and relaxed at all times
during those difficult final days.
We were able to spend Isaacs
last hours together, holding him
close, singing to him, praying for
him and making sure he knew he
was loved more than anything as
he made his ultimate journey.

Stamford Hill have condemned
the Home Affairs Select Committee for not inviting a
Charedi representative to give
evidence to its recent inquiry
into hate targeting British Jews.
Rabbi Avroham Pinter, principal of Yesodey Hatorah Senior
Girls School, said that he was
asked to send his thoughts in
writing only when only when he
approached the committee.
Its insulting, he said. Only

Flood damage at Hertsmere school

HERTSMERE JEWISH Primary
School has been forced to extend its summer holiday by a
week following flood damage.
Parents were informed on
Monday that the Radlett school
will reopen a week late, after
inspectors found extensive damage across the school after
heavy rainfall in June.
As parents scrambled to find
childcare, school bosses assured
anxious families they were doing
all they could to repair the premises in time for the later start of
12 September, instead of the
planned return a week earlier.

Lisa Sanders continues her probe into cults that want to take the Jewish
out of the Jewish state with a look at the high-tech OneForIsrael group

eshua, we praise your name!
Yeshua, we love you! Im listening
to Moti Vaknin, a balding, Israeli
guy in his mid-thirties, and hes describing, in Hebrew, his own conversion to a
brand of Christianity known as Messianic
Judaism. Vaknin grew up in Haifa in an Orthodox Jewish family. Today hes at the
forefront of a movement that seeks to
convert Jews, in Israel and abroad, to accept Jesus alongside their Judaism.
Vaknin is earnest: he talks candidly about
his teenage years; his rebellion against his religious upbringing, his service in the IDF then
his trip to New York where he took drugs and
struggled to make it as a photographer. He
even worked as a mashgiach at a kosher
pizzeria. As he hit rock bottom in New York
out of money and feeling hopeless some
American friends took him to what he thought
was a synagogue for the Shabbat service.
He says he was puzzled when everyone
started singing about Yeshua.
He recalls: I asked my friend, Psst who is
this Yeshua? She looked at me, astonished, and
said, Its Jesus...I told her straight, I didnt want
anything to do with these missionaries.
But then, as Vaknin tells it, once hed studied the New Testament I felt as if someone is
hugging me. He emphasises that hes still
one hundred percent Jewish, but these days
hes a leader in Israels 20,000-strong community of Messianic Jews.
Ironically, both proponents and critics insist
Messianic Jewry in Israel is booming. Messianic Jews believe that Jesus is the Jewish
messiah, and that the Bible prophesises an
End of Days apocalypse that brings about the
Second Coming. In this theology, all the ingathered Jews are doomed to perish unless
they have converted to Christianity.
I was admittedly sceptical about the idea
that Christianity is growing in popularity among
Israeli Jews. Then I discovered a network of active churches that cater to Israelis from every
background, offering services in Russian and
Amharit as well as Hebrew and English.
Many have homegrown Sabras on their ministries native Israelis like Vaknin who were
born Jewish, and who blend Jewish traditions
with belief in Jesus.
A few days after my first visit to a Messianic
community, I discovered a glossy, expensivelyproduced booklet in my postbox. Written entirely in Hebrew, its cover depicts a rendering
of Van Goghs Starry Night, with the words
Jesus The Man and His Way along the
bottom. Inside, peppered with hip graphics,
are 37 pages of essays on prophecy, science,
war, peace and, bizarrely, Bob Dylan quotes.
At the end, curious readers are invited to
order the book (for free!) HaBesora (the News)
from a site called him.co.il.
I started digging. The Him website, in Hebrew, offers excerpts from another free book,
entitled The Prophetic Code. The site itself is
registered to Yeshua the Messiah at an address in Dallas, Texas.
That same address is also linked to an extensive network of other sites. These have extraordinary names like iGod, IMetMessiah.com,
Messiah.co.il, WeLoveIsrael, TheOne, i53 and,
wait for it, XRabbi.co.il.
There are YouTube channels and an online

radio station which broadcasts the Good News

to Jews. All these, I discovered, are part of an
umbrella site, OneForIsrael.org, which is the
organisation that Vaknin runs, together with
fellow native Israeli Eitan Bar.

If Vaknin resembles the kindly uncle of Messianic ministry, Bar is the slick saleman of
Jesus prophecy. The two are best friends and
both hold degrees in Biblical Studies. While
Vaknin did a three-year stint working for Jews

for Jesus from its Tel Aviv headquarters, Bar,

from Tel Aviv, became what is known as a
VLM a virtual-led ministry leader.
Their innovation has been to take proselytising off the streets and straight into the PCs,
tablets and smartphones of potential converts.
With 99 per cent of all Israeli households connected to the Internet, Israels population is online more than that of any European country;
for every hundred citizens there are 122 computers, giving Israel the highest person-tocomputer ratio in the world. As the
OneForIsrael site boasts, while you eat and
sleep, we Israelis are surfing the web ;)
Web-surfers can click to hear individual testimonies of Messianic Jews; they can ask questions about theology, prophecy and the
almighty and get an instant response from Bar
or Vaknin or one of their trained ministers.
A OneForIsrael Facebook post describes
how Eizi, a curious Jewish Israeli teenager
started writing to Eitan and Moti: and it all became a part of who I am. But my parents
wouldnt even listen to mecan Eitan and Moti
come to my school so they can explain..I never
met any believer in Yeshua in my life.
As Vaknin and Bar assert: We make sure the
truth is easy to find when people search for
Yeshua on the internet, and not only that, Israelis will find the message is in their own language and a manner sensitive to their culture.
When Jews for Jesus distributed leaflets in
Petach Tikva, it prompted instant protests by
Yad LAchim, the anti-missionary group. Israeli
law does not ban proselytising, to the chagrin
of the religious parties, and Israels leaders
have for decades welcomed the support of
tens of millions of Evangelicals worldwide who
have been staunch in their support for Israel.
OneForIsrael is leading the way in soft-sell
internet evangelism to Israel, but other Messianic churches are following. In January, WAIO
(We Are Israel Online) run by the Trumpet of
Salvation ministry in Tel Aviv, launched its online radio service. Organisations like Jews for
Judaism, Yad LAchim and XMessianics have
launched their own sites aimed at dissuading
people away from Jesus. Their message is clear
but visually unexciting. Something the evangelicals understand only too well.

Lebanese team bars Israelis from Olympic bus

OLYMPIC BOSSES have criticised
the Lebanese delegation in Rio
for refusing to allow Israeli athletes to board a bus taking both
squads to last Fridays opening
ceremony.
At a hearing on Sunday, the
International Olympic Committee
told Salim al-Haj Nakoula, head of
the Lebanese delegation, that it
would not accept a repeat of the
incident. Nakoula said the issue
was a misunderstanding but
then told a Lebanese newspaper
he was allowed to prevent another team boarding a bus reserved for his countrys athletes.

spirit is the most important thing
and were here to protect it and
carry it with pride.

New taskforce to tackle BDS Trump leads US kippot election

TO RECAP: an anti-Israel MP becomes Labour leader
and is quickly engulfed with stories of anti-Semitism
within the party, many from those who would consider
themselves pro-Palestinian activists.
That leader then establishes an inquiry, chaired by a
civil liberties champion, but that inquiry fails to go far
enough or fully detail contemporary anti-Semitism.
The inquiry head is then awarded a peerage.
Who on Planet Corbyn ever thought this would wash?
In what dream did it work?
Did they assume the peerage would add legitimacy
to Shami Chakrabartis inquiry?
Did they think we wouldnt smell a rat?
These people must exist. Wed like to meet them and
study them.
In the meantime, we can only gaze in wonder at the
spectacular way in which they turned a golden opportunity to restore trust and confidence into an own goal
of monumental magnitude.

The great dangers of

inflammatory speech
THIS WEEK we reveal the legal threats made against
this newspaper by a moderate London Imam who
preaches that Zionism stands for racism and Jewish
supremacist ideology.
Ajmal Masroor has spent the last five months threatening to bring a defamation lawsuit against Jewish
News after we exposed his anti-Israel and anti-Zionism
rhetoric delivered from the pulpit of Palmers Green
mosque. That this line of thinking is being enthusiasically spouted by a mainstream Imam, at a highly visible
and respected place of worship, brings the dangers of

You reported that senior non-Orthodox
rabbis condemned the appointment of
Israeli Rabbi Colonel Eyal Karim, whose
view of rape in wartime had no place in
modern society (Jewish News, 14 July).
If Karim had, as alleged, condoned
the rape of non-Jewish women during
wartime, I would agree with these rabbis.
But in reality all he did was explain the
concept of yefeh toar (Deut.21:10-14),
which has little relevance to warfare today.
Karim explained, 12 years ago, before
becoming a religious figure, that in Jewish
tradition it is meant to curb the unfortunate
tendency of soldiers to mistreat women
captured in war something happening
regularly today in ISIS-controlled areas of
Syria and Iraq. It is not a blanket permission
to commit rape.
The protest you report is the obverse of
the anti-religious campaign, conducted a
decade ago, highlighting the Hebrew
University student Tal Nitzans thesis The
Limits of the Occupation: The Rarity of
Military Rape in the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict.
Nitzan claimed Israelis must be racists,
since their soldiers do not rape Arab
women. His research was awarded a
prize by the Israeli Sociology Society.
I would not expect leaders of the nonOrthodox movements to be familiar with
Jewish tradition, but I take exception to
their distortion of what Rabbi Karim had
said as a way of denigrating Torah Judaism.
Obviously they have taken to heart the
first principle of propaganda that one
should never let truth get in the way of
blackening your opponent.

WAKE UP MR CORBYN:
THIS IS DEMOCRACY
Its enough to make one choke on ones
breakfast while reading a pristine copy of
Socialist Today, God forbid!
In response to Barry Bormans view that
Corbyn has rightly separated religion and
politics (Letters, Jewish News, 21 July), he
has conveniently forgotten the one glaringly
obvious fact Israel has a democraticallyelected government and the nearest thing to
western values you will find in the Middle
East, unlike the majority of countries that
Muslims are not responsible for.
Also, for Corbyn's opening remarks into
a report regarding anti-Semitism in the
British Labour Party to make any comparison involving Israel is shameful, biased,
unhelpful and completely irrelevant.
Anti-Semitism has risen in the Labour Party
since his election because some of the antiSemitic left activists with whom he strongly
associates feel safe in expressing their racist
comments, knowing he will not oppose
them, despite his weak public protestations.
The only reason his supporters are still
fighting for him to stay leader is because
the few MPs still supporting him, such as
Diane Abbott, know full well that when he
goes, it is the end of the gravy train for
them too; theyll never get anywhere near
the shadow cabinet, let alone government
again. Back to guest slots on TV.
Also, in response to Robert Parks the
Labour Party is not anti-Semitic, of course
it isnt. Its just a small minority with a loud
voice have been given carte blanche to
express unopposed anti-Semitic sentiments. As for being immoral, Israeli doing

anything its freely-elected government

decides is not immoral. Its called democracy, something Corbyn and his supporters
will find out the hard way.

LABOUR MUST ADMIT

I refer to Robert Parks letter Israels
actions are led by government (Jewish
News, 21 July) and his comment that
many of us think the way the Israeli
government is treating the Palestinians is
appalling... not because they are Jewish
but what they are doing is immoral.
It is perfectly reasonable for anybody to
disagree with Israel (or the government of
any other country) and to voice their views
publicly; that does not constitute antiSemitism. However, many governments
around the world have appalling humanrights records, are immoral and frequently,
flout international law flagrantly, so why
isnt the Labour Party anti these countries?
Why doesnt the Labour Party instigate
boycott, divestment and sanctions
campaigns against them or seek to prevent
visitors from these places speaking at
universities, speaking out against their leaders or having people show up at any rallies
organised to protest against them?
The answer is simple, sad and shameful. Israel is a Jewish state, brought about
by Zionism as a homeland for the Jews
and, while anti-Semitism has existed since
biblical days, it manifests itself now when
some people claim to be only anti-Zionist
or anti-Israel, knowing full well this incorporates anti-Jewish sentiments.
Individuals in the Labour Party have
made inciteful and offensive comments
about Jews and Israel and not been held
to account by the leadership.
The party is perceived as being antiSemitic and seems to have a lot of people
who are anti-Semitic in some form or
another. Only a recognition of this and
action by the leadership will put an end to
this state of affairs.

RETURN OF THE JEWS
Just when we thought it couldnt get any
worse, the Palestinian Authority (PA)
announces it intends to sue the UK for the
Balfour Declaration, which recognised
Jewish claims to a national homeland in
post-Ottoman Palestine in line with
Wilsonian self-determination.
According to the PA, Britain is responsible for a century of problems for Arabs in
the area, known previously as Southern
Syria. Our friend Jenny Tonge says
Israels treatment of Palestinians is a major
cause in the rise of jihadism worldwide.
Not to be outdone, Georgia congressman Hank Johnson says, during an event
outside the Democratic national convention, that Jewish settlers are like termites
an image some of us recognise as similar
to 1930s German images of Jews as
vermin and bacteria.
Regarding the PA, theres no point referring to the Judeo-Christian Biblical view
that God gave this Holy Land to his
chosen people as part of an eternal
covenant. However, it may be worthwhile
to look at the Koran. Does that apply to
the PA, Tonge and Johnson?
Does the will of almighty God himself,
to quote a top Islamic authority, satisfy
them? According to Sheikh Prof Palazzi, it
was the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, Haj
Amin el-Husseini, who replaced genuine
Islamic theology, which recognises the
return of the Jews to Israel, with politics
and created the present confrontation.
The learned Sheikh does not blame
Lord Balfour, or Jewish settlers in their
own land.

GAY PRIDE OFFENDED

MORE THAN RABBIS
Letter writer Kalela Lancaster professes
to love Israel. But her spiteful words
underline her hatred for a country mainstream Jews know and love (Jewish
News, 28 July).
In demonising those who found the
Gay Pride event in Jerusalem offensive,
she blames the citys mayor for
shamefully swelling support for the
dark messages of homophobia of 25
rabbis, without admitting Jerusalems
other religious minorities also found it
offensive.
She coyly omits any mention of the
huge, annual Pride event in Tel Aviv in
May, which passed peacefully.
Worse, she insinuates the blame for
Shira Bankis dreadful murder lies in the
vile discourse of hatred and division
sown by right-wing forces that have
conquered Israels political and religious
institutions, when it was the act of a
single, evil fanatic who should never
have been released from prison.
And true to form, she attacks Israels
fragile democracy for passing two laws,
one of which will expose the New Israel
Fund for the anti-Israel non-governmental organisation it is.
Why fear the legal requirement for
NGOs to declare their funding if more
than 50 percent comes from overseas?
Why demand anonymity? The answer is
obvious.

Chakrabarti [Chak-ra-barti]
verb, transitive: to mislead
TODAY WE are going to learn some new words
to add to the dictionary. Some are a bit difficult,
but Im sure well all get the hang of them.
Chakrabarti, (chak ra barti) verb, transitive: this
word has several meanings. Up until last week,
it meant to pass yellow Post-It notes to a leader
without anyone knowing the contents (NB this
meaning only applies in front of a House of
Commons Select Committee).
However, as of this week, to Chakrabarti can
mean, variously, to accept a Labour peerage while
having fiercely denied you were going to do any
such thing; to conduct a supposedly independent
inquiry on anti-Semitism for the Labour Party,
which is nothing of the sort; to interview a whole
range of submissions for the inquiry and reflect
few of them in your report; to suggest, incorrectly,
that the reason Baroness Royalls report into
student anti-Semitism was not published was
because individual names were identified; to
launch your inquiry on anti-Semitism at a chaotic
press conference at which a Jewish MP is insulted
in front of you with anti-Semitic remarks. To
Chakrabati additionally: to mislead.
Goddard, (god dard, New Zealand pronunciation), adjective: a Goddard Inquiry will always be
the third and least successful in a run of chaired
government inquiries. Characteristics are an
inability to distinguish persons from institutions
thus the Goddard Inquiry into child sex abuse,

supposedly set up to look at how alleged victims

had been institutionally failed, chose to begin
its investigations with a separate strand on the
late Lord Janner. Given that the peer was both
dead and a person, rather than an institution,
Goddard is the only possible word to use here.
Also q.v. Goddard resignation: use this adjective
when you jump before you are pushed, ensuring
your resignation is two lines long and the Home
Secretarys acceptance of it is 10 times longer.
Lebanon bus boarding, adverbial phrase: to
ensure you use this terminology properly, wait until
the Israeli Olympic delegation is ready to board
the bus in Rio which you are meant to be sharing,
refuse to allow it to board and, in case it doesnt
quite get the message, physically block the bus
entrance when the driver opens the door. Make
sure, additionally, that you claim there has been
a misunderstanding when reprimanded by the
International Olympic Committee.
Biggins, verb, transitive: to make a series of
ill-judged, foolish and offensive remarks, get
yourself thrown off a reality TV show, and then
wonder what all the fuss is about. You are using
this term correctly if, when Bigginsing, you make
a Holocaust-related joke to someone Jewish
and then claim that even though the remark was
about Nazis and gas chambers, it hadnt occurred
to you that this was what you were saying. (NB you
need to be at least in your late 60s to use this word

properly, ie. old enough to know better).

Use this verb together with to Shalit, which
means getting someone, preferably a show business agent, to defend your Bigginsing by saying
you are a national treasure and a lovely person.
And let us not forget the most useful new word
in our lexicon, to Corbyn. This fine term has any
number of elastic meanings to apply in day-to-day
conversation. You could, for example, say you
were about to Corbyn the Board of Deputies if
you meant you were approaching a meeting with
the Board with complete and utter contempt.
We have long used the infinitive verb to
Corbyn as a shorthand way of saying my
friends in Hamas and Hezbollah. But why not try
using it to say: I want to nominate my friend for
the House of Lords even though I said I wasnt
going to nominate anyone, and I lobbied
Downing Street to have this one Labour nomination on David Camerons resignation honours list,
and I forfeited any opportunity of attacking the
Tories for cronyism, and, opportunely, the friend
I have nominated has just produced an inquiry
into anti-Semitism and she has concluded it is
not rife in Labour? You see how useful it is?
Next month: new meanings for Trump, Farage
Galloway and He-Should-Consider-His-PositionDiane Abbott. But if you were wondering, to Wes
Streeting means standing up and saying the right
thing. Do use this compound verb when you can.

Our new site will help

you stand up for Israel
PRO-ISRAEL CAMPAIGNERS are doing amazing
things up and down the country, rising to the challenge of campaigning for Israel in the face of
increasing hostility.
There are now more than 500 councillors
signed up to Local Government Friends of Israel,
and local Friends of Israel groups have been set
up in almost every part of the UK. But there is always more that can and should be done to support Israel in the face of the ongoing attempts to
delegitimise the Middle Easts only democracy.
Too often, politicians are swamped with petitions and thousands of emails from anti-Israel
campaigners. In the past, they havent heard
enough from Israels supporters. Direct email,
social media, videos... These are all critical in
making our case and standing up for Israel, but
we have been too slow to harness the revolution
in social media to our advantage.
We in the pro-Israel community must not be
afraid to take this step forward. We may not all
be tech wizards, but now is the time to show real
strength in numbers. We can frame the online
conversation on Facebook and Twitter and
become a louder voice nationally and in our local
communities.
With this in mind, my organisation, We Believe
in Israel, has launched a new website that gives
activists the ability to campaign in just two clicks,
from their mobile phones or tablets, on the latest
and most relevant issues affecting the pro-Israel

community in the UK. You can visit the new site

We are the fastest growing pro-Israel grassroots
organisation in the country, with more than 11,000
activists subscribing to our emails, and a target
of getting this to 20,000 by the end of the year. We
give thousands of supporters of Israel in the UK
the knowledge, skills and inspiration to become
active campaigners. But we were lacking something until now an accessible, easy-to-navigate,
good looking and effective campaigning hub for
activists up and down the country.
This new website fills that gap. It signifies a stepchange in campaigning for Israel. The latest technological tools are now being deployed to help us
to raise our issues with the people in charge.
Since the website went live, we have launched
a number of campaigns.
With our new Start Talking, Stop Inciting campaign, we are calling on people to write to
the new Foreign Secretary, Boris Johnson, to ask
him to put pressure on Palestinian Authority
President Mahmoud Abbas to negotiate with
Benjamin Netanyahu and end incitement. Despite
Netanyahu making it clear on numerous occasions
that he is ready to meet Abbas, the PA president
has shown no willingness to talk and prefers to
continue to incite hatred against Israel.
We have also launched a petition in support of
the governments ban on anti-Israel boycotts
by local councils. In February, the government

published new guidance that aims to stop procurement boycotts by public authorities such as
local councils.
Ben Gummer MP is the new Minister for the
Cabinet Office and anti-Israel campaigners have
sent him a petition with 9,000 signatures on it,
calling for the guidance to be scrapped and councils given the right to boycott Israel. We have set
up our own petition to ensure Mr Gummer is aware
there are just as many people who do not believe
it is appropriate for councils to boycott Israel.
These calls to action follow our launch campaign on an issue that has also been raised right
here in the pages of Jewish News the disgraceful presence of flags from the terror group
Hezbollah at the recent anti-Israel Al Quds day
march earlier this month.
Regrettably, the police did nothing to stop
people brandishing signs from this virulently antiSemitic organisation. In light of this, we are urging
pro-Israel activists, from within and outside of the
Jewish community, to write to Mayor of London
Sadiq Khan asking him to get the Metropolitan
Police to abide by counterterrorism guidance
issued by the Home Office.
The Israel haters have gone from the political
fringes to taking control of the NUS and the
Labour Party in the past year. But we are rising to
that challenge and we are taking the fight back
to them with guts, passion and energy.
Now we have the right tools to do it as well.

wizards, but now is the
time to show real
strength in numbers

Every Jew has a duty to

help end the occupation
A MONTH AGO, I spent my Shabbat morning
being chased down a hill by IDF soldiers in the
city of Hebron. I was part of a group of 40 Jews
helping a Palestinian landowner clear his factory
land to make way for a cinema, before it was declared a closed military zone. I was scared
scared of an army that I had been taught to respect and admire for most of my life. Scared of
what might happen to the Palestinian activists
who were with us if they were caught.
I was taking part in a 10-day trip organised
by the Centre for Jewish Non-Violence (CJNV),
which brings Jews from around the world to the
Occupied Territories to do peaceful solidarity
work with Palestinian communities. During the
trip, we met with a number of Israeli and Palestinian peace activists who are working together
to help end the occupation.
Recognising that, as Jews, in the context of
occupation we are more powerful than our Palestinian counterparts, all actions were led by our
Palestinian partners. This was particularly powerful as, while there are numerous discussions,
events and trips about Israel/Palestine in the Jewish community, my experience is that very few
prioritise the involvement of Palestinian activists
and communities as was done on this trip.
While the actions in which we took part may
seem ineffectual in comparison with the power
of the Israeli government, they still have impact
whether that is helping with agricultural work in

the Palestinian village of Umm al-Khair, or putting

on a street party in the east Jerusalem Palestinian
neighbourhood of Silwan.
Acting in solidarity with those who are challenging actions by the IDF and some settler
communities that make life for Palestinians
unsustainable and unbearable was important to
do as Jews. We wanted to actively denounce
policies that continue to perpetuate the indignity
of occupation. Our experiences, of helping pave
a road with the organisation Taayush, of clearing
out Palestinian owned land to make way for a
cinema in Hebron, reinforced to me how we have
to challenge the tired and prejudiced narrative
in our community that it must be us or them,
that there are no partners for peace.
Residents of the Palestinian village of Susiya in
the south Hebron Hills were expelled from the
land in 1986, and it is now an Israeli archaeological site. Since then, there have been multiple
demolitions when the village is rebuilt on different parts of the land. Susiya was where we spent
our Shabbat after our action in Hebron. The family of Nasser, a BTselem activist, prepared a room
for those who were shomer Shabbat, cooked us
our Shabbat meal and was kind and welcoming
to us. On 15 August this year, Susiya is once
again set for demolition. The notion that it could
be justified that these peoples homes should be
destroyed for my safety is, frankly, absurd.
The majority of conversations in our commu-

nity revolve around end points. One state or two?

Zionist or non-Zionist? Jewish or Democratic?
These are all important questions but, at present,
they are secondary to the impact Israeli government policies are having on Palestinians living in
the West Bank. We have a responsibility to listen
to the experience of people who live their lives
under military rule. Its OK if these conversations
make us uncomfortable even ashamed.
On one of our final days, the director of the
CJNV told us that there is no its complicated
with the occupation: You either support it or you
are against it. As diaspora Jews, we have a fundamental responsibility and obligation to help
bring about its end. We must do so not only
because we care about Israel acting out its
democratic values.
Being part of the movement to end the occupation must come from a Jewish place, because
it is from Judaism that I learnt my values of
social justice, and ending the occupation should
be a Jewish social justice issue.
We must recognise that ongoing Israeli control over the Occupied Territories means that
Palestinians continue to be treated in a manner
that lacks human dignity. This is something
about which we cannot remain silent.
Next year marks half-a-century of occupation
and the CJNV wants 500 diaspora Jews join us in
Israel/Palestine to say 50 years is 50 years too
long. I hope you will join us.

OPINION:

Peer-gate the latest fiasco

to erode Corbyns pledge
I LIKE to give people the benefit of the doubt
including Jeremy Corbyn. But recent actions, culminating in Peerage-gate, make it seem like Team
Corbyn is hell-bent on proving right all those who
wrote him off on day one.
Soon after his overwhelming leadership election victory, I sat down with a member of his
media team, determined to reach out despite the
inevitable challenges. It was a few days after Corbyn made his debut speech to Labour Friends of
Israel without mentioning that countrys name.
I made it clear during that meeting that should
a similar speech be delivered a year later at the
next party conference, once hed been exposed
to perspectives he probably had never encountered, then wed know the problem was terminal.
Until then, I said, he should be given a chance to
show he is capable of moving beyond his onesided record on Israel and the Palestinians.
In recent months Corbyn has said albeit often
belatedly things that should be welcomed. His
expression of regret during a grilling by the home
affairs select committee at labelling Hamas and
Hezbollah friends was long overdue. As was
eventual recognition that the Hamas charter is
anti-Semitic. Facing an anti-Semitism scandal in
his own ranks, he suspended party members,
councillors, an MP most of whose offences had
occurred before his time in office and even his
close ally Ken Livingstone, the latter within a few
hours of his disgraceful comments on Hitler. Recently, he spoke out against use of the epithet

Zio and Nazi metaphors and stressed that making the Palestinian case with hateful language did
no one any favours.
But theres no getting away from the fact that,
in recent weeks, the actions of Corbyns Labour
have done more to undermine than enforce his
words of zero-tolerance of anti-Semitism and professed determination to make Jews feel welcome.
First there was the readmission of Momentum
activist Jackie Walker, no more than a few weeks
after she was suspended over posts claiming
Jews were the chief financiers of the slave trade.
She was rushed back into the fold without so
much as a note of contrition before Chakrabarti
had even reported. The party had needlessly chosen to pile controversy upon controversy that sent
a clear message to others who would indulge in
such rhetoric: there could be room for you in
Labour. Whoever took that decision decided that
placating Walker and her vocal supporters was
more important than starting to address communal fears. There is simply no other way of interpreting it.
Another troubling development was the failure
to publish the full Jan Royall report into allegations of anti-Semitism at the Oxford Labour Club.
Instead, we were forced to wait for the baroness
to become so frustrated that she made the report
available of her own accord.
But what has undermined confidence in Corbyns promises to decisively tackle anti-Semitism

more than anything else is the peerage for Shami

Chakrabarti, the chair of Labours anti-Semitism
inquiry. Not because her previous work doesnt
deserve it, or because she doesnt have a wealth
of experience to offer the Lords. Not even because of his previous commitment not to create
new peers. But because the timing so close to
a report seen as a strong platform for action by
some but which others viewed as a whitewash
severely undermined its credibility.
Because at a time when both the party and
Chakrabarti were stressing the inquirys independence, its hard to imagine anything that would
more effectively raise the whiff of something
unsavoury. And because at a time when the party
is in dire need of fire fighting in the Jewish community, this was only ever going to inflame tensions. Even for the dwindling few ready to give
the benefit of the doubt, its hard to escape the
impression that, like with the Royall report and
Walker, communal concerns have been cast
aside. Only a decision to readmit Ken Livingstone
could make things worse.
It is too easy, though, to dismiss the situation
as a lost cause. It will be down to Corbyn, if he
wins the upcoming leadership contest, to implement the report. The current leader cannot be
blamed for every party member who has trotted
out an anti-Semitic trope over the past few years,
but he is fully responsible for ensuring his pledge
of zero-tolerance towards anti-Semitism is
realised in appearance and practice.

Hundreds join tribute to rabbi

Nearly 700 people gathered at Watfords
Colosseum Theatre for a This Is Your Lifestyle tribute to Rabbi Meir Salasnik. The
Bushey United Synagogue minister and
his wife Judy are due to make aliyah later
this year after 37 years service. He said:
Judy and I were so moved by the love,
respect and warmth shown to us by so
many people. The surprises, generous
tributes and to see our family from Israel,
who we were not expecting, capped an
amazing evening.

Unity, Norwoods recreational group for children with disabilities, teamed up with Woodfords ELHAP for a superhero themed activity
day at the ELHAP adventure playground for

to civilisation, worse even than the Jews,

While to some degree he looks back at his
younger years through rose-tinted glasses,
Jacobson believes the Jewish community has
always struggled for acceptance and will
continue to do so.
This theme is one that Jacobson touches
upon in his most recently-published book,
Shylock Is My Name, a reimagination of Shakespeares infamous character from The Merchant
Of Venice.

Nodding in agreement, the author concludes: I dont think Jews can ever relax and
I dont think the world will ever be a safe place
for Jews but this is something that has kept
us very agile and capable of producing marvellous things, because we know we always
have to.

A JOURNEY FROM COMEDY

OVER TO THE DARK SIDE
Author Jonathan Ames has marked a change of direction in
his latest book to delve into the world of violence. Here,
he tells Alex Galbinski why he felt compelled to write it

So when I ask

he cant do, Im reassured when he admits
there is plenty.
There is so much Id like to do
and try, but I dont even know where

to begin. But there are many things

I cant do again, I dont know where

Ames novel, You Were Never
Really Here, has just been published
in the UK and he admits being very
intrigued and pleased that it will be
made into a forthcoming film starring
Joaquin Phoenix.
His latest work is a departure from
his other books which include The
Extra Man, I Love You More Than You
Know and Wake Up, Sir, the last of
which is a comic ode to PG Wodehouse in that it is a dark thriller that
haunts the reader long after the
book is finished.
Its protagonist, former marine and
FBI agent Joe, has seen too much,
leaving him deeply traumatised. This
comes on top of the abuse he suffered by his own father and he wants
to die. He hides away from the
world, but earns a living rescuing
girls who have been kidnapped into
the slave trade. Hired by a high-ranking New York senator to save his
daughter from a Manhattan brothel,
Joe finds himself stumbling into a
web of conspiracy and corruption.
For the past 10 to 15 years, Ames
says he has pretty much stopped
reading what is considered literature and just wanted to read books
that thrilled me ... mysteries... its just
what I came to be drawn to.

Anyone for Venice?

Sharon Feinstein takes a peek at the Italian city where
the worlds first ghetto was established 500 years ago

hen Venices only female gondolier, Alex

Hai, rows through the meandering canals,
she says she feels the buildings are moving away to give her space, everything is fluid and
magic can happen at any moment.
After 30 years of being on the water in her sleek
black gondola, she describes Venice as divided between boat people and walkers, known as Pilgrims.
You are walking over the bridges, I pass under
them, and so often the two never meet, she told
me over plates of tortellini ricotta and spinach at
Da Ivo, George Clooneys restaurant of choice.
You need the right sensibility for Venice, city of
shadows and dreams, as you walk among its secrets.
The light is soft, golden, glinting off the stone
palaces and whispering water. The silence gives it a
hypnotic charm, with just footfalls, the breeze, or the
sound of oars slapping on water.
Venice became walkable only in the 18th century.
It was just 122 little islands with 104 churches, until
the Austrians built most of the bridges and made it
walkable so people didn't need boats anymore.
I like to stay at Baglioni Hotel Luna, regarded as

Venice's first lodging, dating from the 12th century.

Its steps from St Marks Square, facing a small canal
looking across to San Giorgio Maggiore church.
The hotel is decorated with that classic Venetian
mix of creamy marble and elaborate brocades.
As the mist lifted each morning, I left the side door,
past Hemingways haunt, Harrys Bar, on my daily run
along the Grand Canal, over the bridges to St Elena.
From here, there are clear views to the Lido, setting for Manns haunting novel Death in Venice.
Round every corner of this city is a literary, cinematic
or artistic reference. It has remained a great European outpost, magnificently untouched by the
spread of brutal globalisation.
The lavish Baglioni breakfast is served beneath
pink and gold ceiling frescoes from Tiepolo's school
and serves a spread of delicious Venetian cakes like
Zaletti and focaccia, typical sweet bread, as a starter.
This year is the 500th anniversary of the worlds
first ghetto, when the Doge enforced segregation of
Venetian Jews in 1516. People here believe that
conserving this site, with its five bijou synagogues,
is imperative as a physical reminder of Jewish persecution over centuries.
I found a wonderful public swimming
pool in Sant Alvise near the ghetto, and
pounded the lanes to work up an
appetite for cicchetti, under the arches
of the Rialto.
Often eaten standing up, these are
small Venetian dishes like baccal (cod
puree) on toast, croquettes and fried
artichokes, ideally washed down with a
glass of Barolo.
My choices for lunch and dinner
shifted between Do Forni, favoured by
locals, politicians and Venetian nobles;
Harrys Bar, and Da Ivo.
The elegant Do Forni is steered by

whose wine collection is said to be worth millions.

Its an enchanted place decked with alcoves, hidden
spaces, serenading Peruvian musicians and, of
course, impeccable service. I relished my baked sea
bass with potatoes, cherry tomatoes and black
olives, not to mention the speciality crepes.
Harrys Bar is a meeting place for the intelligentsia,
an in club where you
have to be, the atmosphere vibrant and intriguing. Its drink is the Bellini,
white peach juice and
sparkling Prosecco, and
for me the delicate pasta
with wild mushrooms
reigned supreme.
Ernest Hemingway
was a regular here for a
while from 1949 onwards
and set bar scenes here
in his novel Across the River and Into The Trees.
Ristorante da Ivo is small, intimate and the kind of
neighbourhood eating place to cherish. Its a
relaxed, humming dining room with superb food,
personal service and delectable offerings from the
chef to nibble between courses.
I also discovered Local, a new and imaginative
restaurant in Castello, with an interior built by Venetian artisans and young, idealistic owners who serve
only local produce and organic wines. My tagliatelle
with white truffles was delicious.
I took the boat to Burano, a tiny, peaceful island
in the Venetian lagoon close to the supposedlyhaunted island of Torcello, where buildings are
painted like an array of pastel ice creams.
I was visiting Il Gatto Nero, the famous Black Cat
restaurant. Rupert Everett had just left his corner
table of the past ten years. Now I have mine,
because after that meal I am going to need it each
time I go back to Venice. It is run by a father and
son, with traditional cooking handed down by the

old women of the island and a menu brimming with

fresh fish straight from the lagoon.
Back in Venice, I walked for hours every day, visiting the Accademia, the great Tintorettos, Bellinis in
hidden chapels, buying handmade shoes from
Daniela Ghezzo along with her more regular customers like Woody Allen and Bill Gates, designer
clothes from Empresa,
often lost in the intricately-woven web of
streets and canals.
The last night I dined
with Matteo Corvino,
Venetian designer of Il
Carnivale and grand
weddings, at Piazza San
Marcos only restaurant,
the Quadri, which has
three Michelin stars.
Every detail is exquisite,
with red silk-draped walls, Murano chandeliers,
stately old style service and food with tastes and textures verging on the sublime.
I left by boat with the Grand Canal panorama
becoming more distant and the dreamy elusive city
fading like a trick of light, which is, of course, Venices
enduring fascination.

THE SEDRA of Devarim is always

read on the Shabbat before Tisha
BAv on 9 Av the darkest day in
the Jewish calendar, upon which
both Temples were destroyed and
a catalogue of other national
calamities happened.
In the opening words of this final
book of the Torah, Moses alludes
to the sins of the Jewish people
during their 40-year sojourn in the
desert, including worshipping the
Golden Calf and the spies evil report.
Although his purpose was to rebuke the people and to induce
them to repent for it all, he does it,
as the commentators note, in such
a way that avoids any unnecessary
embarrassment to the people.
Moses was sensitive to the principle that the dignity of every person
is sacred and even constructive criticism has to be given in a way that
avoids shaming someone.
This makes his choice of words
later in the sedra even more shocking. He reminds the nation of their
contentiousness, their quarrels and

slander, how they rebelled, were

wilful and did not listen and he even
goes as far as to refer to them as an
evil generation. Why is there such a
contrast between Moses initial
overview and his later analysis of
this period of their national history?
If we turn to the Haphtarah the
vision of Isaiah following the destruction of the First Temple we
can understand Moses approach.
Rabbi Mendel Hirsch points out
that Isaiah does not bemoan the
fact that the Temple was destroyed.
Instead, the prophet laments the
underlying causes of the destruction. Mourning over the loss is almost futile if it is not a spur to
introspection and soul-searching, in
an attempt to understand the
malaise at its root and to rectify it.
At first, Moses gently reminds
the people of the mistakes they
made in the past, but as a leader
who is preparing them for the future he cannot leave it at that.
He feels compelled to highlight,
in the strongest possible form,
those aspects of our behaviour and
nature that caused the damage. Ignore them at your peril.
It is a salutary lesson for all time.
As we continue to mourn the lack
of the Temple and pray constantly
for it to be rebuilt, we would do
well to heed Moses words on
both a national and individual level
to identify what is wrong and to
fix it.

ploughing the fields with twelve yokes of oxen. Elijah threw his cloak over Elisha. Elisha prepared himself to follow his master.
Thereafter, Elijah and Elisha crossed the Jordan in
the same manner as Joshua and Moses crossed with
their people through water bed, on dry land.
Elijah promised Elisha a double portion of his spirit
if he saw him depart from this world.
Suddenly, a chariot pulled by fiery horses separated them and Elisha cried: My father, my father, the
chariot of Israel and its horsemen! until he saw him
no more.
He took the cloak that Elijah had left behind, rolled
it up, split the Jordan and crossed back. His career
of many miracles thus began. Elisha purified poisoned waters.
Callous young men who cursed Elisha were devoured by grizzly bears. Elisha prophesied the downfall
of Moab. He filled a poor home with wealth by blessing
a jug to constantly pour with olive oil. He revived from
the dead a child born to a woman who had acted charitably towards him. Elisha rescued an evil-tasting broth

for the prophets and fed 100 men with only 20 loaves.
Perhaps most famously, Elisha healed Naaman,
the great Aramean general, of his leprosy. He saved
the iron of an axe lost by a prophet lumberjack, making it rise to the river surface.
In an Aramean attack on Israel, Elisha smote them
with blindness, but asked the King of Israel to keep the
Arameans alive and not kill them in cold blood.
Therefore, the king blamed Elisha for a subsequent
Aramean siege lasting seven years, resulting in famine
and cannibalism. However, Elisha declared the famine
over. There were stampedes in the marketplaces.
The Aramean military disappeared overnight,
frightened by a great noise, leaving their wealth to Israelite plunder.
Finally, Elisha carried out Elijahs original mission to
anoint Hazael as King of Aram and Jehu as future king
of Israel. This brought to an end the evildoing House
of Ahab.
On his deathbed, Elisha handed Joash a bow and
arrows and asked him to shoot towards Aram as an
omen that they would fall into Israels hand.
When Joash failed to shoot more than three times,
Elisha was angry, and told him that had he shot five
or six times, Aram would have been forever vanquished. Instead, Hazael, also anointed by Elisha,
would ultimately subjugate Israel.
Even post-mortem, Elishas corpse miraculously revived another corpse which had occupied his grave;
the dead man stood and left, leaving the grave empty
for its new occupant.

How has the Diaspora helped move

Judaism towards gender equality?

IT IS a fact of society that it has been far

harder for a woman to make an impact on
contemporary Britain, due to a perpetuation of male domination. The same can be
said for pretty much every culture around
the world.
And yet if we look at the UK today, we
have a female monarch who has reigned,
does reign, and seems to reign on like no
other oh, perhaps other than Queen Victoria.
And now we have a female prime minister in Theresa May, to match a female First
Minister of Scotland in Nicola Sturgeon.
In Judaism, the Reform and Liberal
movements have key positions held by
women. Rabbi Charley Baginsky is Liberal
Judaisms new director of strategy and
partnerships, while Rabbi Alexandra
Wright is both senior rabbi of The Liberal
Jewish Synagogue and co-chair of LJs Rabbinic Conference.
The Movement for Reform Judaism has
Rabbi Laura Janner-Klausner as its senior
Rabbi and Rabbi Baroness Julia Neuberger
herself a former president of Liberal Judaism as senior rabbi of its flagship West
London Synagogue.
Who knows, maybe Masorti Judaism and
even the United Synagogue will follow us,

certainly if Dina Brawer has any say.

I am delighted for many reasons that
Rabbi Lea Mu h lstein works with me as
rabbi of Northwood & Pinner Liberal Synagogue. Lea stands as a female role model
for all generations.
As well as speaking with gentle authority, the quality that I most appreciate is her
humility.
The ancient rabbis all men of course
legislated harshly against the inheritance
of women.
As Rabbi Pamela Wax writes in The
Womens Torah Commentary, this is despite the compelling reasons to allow
daughters to inherit and despite legal ways
in which they might have liberalised the
law in Numbers to attain this goal.
Men chose to inflict their rulings on their
womenfolk, subjugating their rights.
Where was the humility of these men to
look to a higher authority as Moses had
done?
Of course, this is not the only way in
which women have been subjugated in halacha.
Thank goodness for the primacy of laws
of the land (dina dmalchuta dina) invoked
for the Diaspora that allows for inheritance
and most civil matters to be legislated by
the cultural and legal norms of the land in
which Jews were living.

IN THE BOOK of Samuel, the

Torah gives us the word pazzaz
(derived from lepatsez, to put on
a spectacle, to celebrate with all
your might) to describe dancing.
People dont think of classical
ballet as having any Jewish resonance, but the foundations of
British dance were laid, among
others of Jewish heritage, by
Dame Alicia Markova.
Following a period dancing
with Serge Diaghilevs Ballets
Russes, Alicia Markova with
Anton Dolin danced the length
and breadth of the UK, bringing
classical ballet to pubs, social
clubs, and cinemas, making the
art form accessible to everyone.
Lilian Alice Marks was born in
1910 in Finsbury Park, attending
Hebrew School and later becoming a member of West Lon-

don Synagogue (where her parents married). She was instrumental in the formation of
Rambert Dance Company and of
what is now the Royal Ballet.
She co-founded Festival Ballet in 1951, now known as English National Ballet (ENB), to
open up the art form to the
masses at affordable prices.
ENB has performed The Nutcracker in London every year
since, giving many generations
their first taste of dance.
Markova also became patron
of the Academy of Indian Dance,
becoming one of the first classical
dancers in the UK to collaborate
with classical Indian movement.
She also revived the largely
forgotten romantic ballet Giselle
and made the role her own,
bringing this now much-loved

ballet to the attention of new audiences. This year, English National Ballet has commissioned
the Kathak/Contemporary choreographer, Akram Khan, to create a reimagining of this classic
ballet. The pioneering spirit of
Dame Alicia is still alive.
At her memorial in Westminster Abbey in 2005, a West London Synagogue rabbi recited El
Malei Rachamim, and dance
was performed in the abbey for
the first time ever.
To the most challenging of
proposals, Dame Alicia Markova
would reply, Why Not?, reflecting her courage, energy, and
strength of vision.
During my 30 plus years
working in the dance industry,
this has made Dame Alicia
Markova my Jewish hero.

Must I share my
inheritance?
Dear Rebekah
I recently separated from my wife. I received an inheritance
before we parted. Ive heard I may be required to share it
with my wife. Is this correct?

Dear Daniel
It is not uncommon for one party to a marriage to have
received an inheritance during the marriage. The question then
arises as to whether that inheritance can be ring-fenced, so that
it does not need to be shared on divorce.
The starting point is that all of the assets of a marriage should
be shared equally. However, this is not automatically the case
in respect of inherited assets.
Whether your inheritance will have to be shared will depend on
the circumstances of your particular matter, including the length
of the marriage, how the inheritance has been dealt with in the
marriage, when it was received, the size of the inheritance and
the financial needs of both parties.
If an inheritance is received shortly before the breakdown of a
marriage, has been retained in the sole name of the person receiving it, has been kept separate from other assets of the marriage, has not been used for the benefit of the family, and both
parties needs can be met from other assets, then it is less likely
that the inheritance will have to be shared on divorce.
If the assets of your marriage, excluding your inheritance are
limited, and are not enough to meet the housing needs of both
you and your wife and any children you have, then there may
be no choice but for your inheritance to be shared, and a court
does have the power to order this in appropriate cases.
The issue of inheritance and divorce is very complicated and
you should therefore seek expert legal advice.

Life on my own often

seems overwhelming

Im an 87-year-old widower and have been on my own for
many years. So I sympathise with the growing problems
of loneliness in the community, as reported in last weeks
Jewish News. I used to enjoy my own company and, dare

Vegetarian Italian stuffed red peppers

PREPARATION TIME
15 MINS

Full of wonderful flavours and texture,

these stuffed peppers make a great supper
or dinner party starter.

COOKING TIME
35 MINUTES

2 large red peppers

50g cous cous
100ml vegetable stock

Method

50g cherry tomatoes sliced

1 Preheat the oven to 200C / 400F/ Gas mark 6.

2 Cut the peppers in half through the stalks and

roughly chopped

scoop out the seeds. Transfer to a tray lined

with baking parchment paper.
Bake for 20 minutes or until just tender.
Tip the cous cous in a bowl and pour in the
hot stock. Cover and leave for 5 minutes and
then fluff up with a fork.
Add the cherry tomatoes, olives, hazelnuts,
parsley, and lemon zest and season well. Mix
well and spoon into the pepper halves.
For the topping, mix the breadcrumbs with
the Chevington grated mature cheddar.
Sprinkle on top.
Return to the oven for 15 minutes until the
cheese topping is golden.

Medal hopeful Shatilov suffers early exit as Israeli athletes

GYMNAST ALEX Shatilov, who carried
hopes of winning a medal, saw his dreams
dashed in disappointing style. Failing to
qualify for both the floor and horizontal bars
competitions, he said: Things didnt go as
I planned, but that happens in sport and
theres nothing I can do about it. You need
to know how to cope with disappointments
and life continues.
Not getting drawn on whether he would
retire as a result, he added: I can continue
both physically and mentall because I saw
what Im capable of in my recent competitions and I still have a passion for
the sport.
Israels first athlete in action at the
Games was judoka Shira Rishony,
though she left the mat in tears
after two minutes having being disqualified for illegal use of the
elbow. Competing in the U48kg
weight category, the 25-year-old,
said: Im still in shock, I felt I was
ready and it hurts me that I couldnt
give my all and that it all ended before it
really began. Its hard to put in words how
much you give and how much you sacrifice
and how much you dream of this moment.
You certainly dont imagine it ending like
this.
Sagi Muki has vowed to bounce back
even stronger for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic

said: I felt so fit, I could have done another

title. I thought it was a top performance and that I boxed really well.

YARDEN GERBI became
the first Israeli woman to
win an Olympic medal in 24
years and dedicated her
victory to everyone in Israel.
Beating Japans Miku
Tashiro to win bronze in the
63kg judo event and claim
what is only Israels eighth
ever Olympic medal, she
said: Someone wake me
up, I cant believe it. This is
a dream come true. It was
really hard, but I had all the
support I needed from my

family. I dedicate this medal

to everyone in Israel. I give
my life to judo and it paid
off. Whoever said you cant
succeed in Israel is wrong.
Gerbins win has been a
rare highlight for the Israelis, who overall have had
a disappointing Games to
date. The 27-year-olds win
was met with jubilant
scenes back in Israel, and
she received a congratulatory phone call from Israeli
President Reuven Rivlin.
He told her: All the people here in Israel are excited
together with you. We
all held our breath and
prayed for your success but
