Prayuktkhyta-majar says this dhtu is also used in the sense of smarthya (to be able). An example of this is seen
in the following passage of Lalita-mdhava: moktu na kamate kadpi yad aya vndav-kandaram (Because he is
unable to leave Vndvana at any time).

The literal meaning of vyaktym vci is in the sense of articulate speech. Here vyakta assumes the feminine form
vyakt because it is modifying the feminine word vc.

These two dhtus are listed together as stana-gad deva-abde in the Dhtu-pha, but according to Siddhnta-kaumud
the -rma just indicates the dual case.

Commenting on this dhtu, Siddhnta-kaumud says upaama ity y-antasya. tena sakarmako yam, na tu ami-vad
akarmaka (The word upaama in dam[u] upaame is made from a y-anta-dhtu. Thus dam[u] is sakarmaka, unlike
am[u] which is akarmaka). The word upaama in dam[u] upaame is made from upa + am[u] + []i + [gh]a[] and
there is no vndra because of stra 397. Thus the sense is to cause to be calm or, in other words, to tame, subdue.
This upaama is different from the upaama in am[u] upaame which is formed from upa + am[u] + [gh]a[] and which
just means to be calm.

In the Pinian Dhtu-pha this dhtu is listed as bhuvo vakalpane and kp[a] avakalpane is listed as kpe ca. In both
cases the sixth case singular is used and, in the case of kpe, i[k] is used. Commenting on the meaning of avakalpana
here, Siddhanta-kaumud says avakalpana mir-karaam ity eke, cintanam ity anye (Some say avakalpana means
mir-karaa (to mix). Others say avakalpana means cintana (to think, consider, meditate)). The meaning of
cintana, however, is the commonly accepted meaning. For example, in Prayuktkyta-majar Rpa Gosvm says dhyne
cintayati dhyyaty m bhvayati trayam (These three, i.e cintayati, dhyyati, and bhvayati, are used in the sense of
dhyna (meditation, consideration)). Similarly, in Vivantha Cakravarts Gurv-aaka we have skd-dharitvena
samasta-strair uktas tath bhvyata eva sadbhi (The guru is said by all the scriptures to be directly Hari, and he is
considered in the same way by the saintly persons).

this dhtu is preceded by an upendra and it
means to reveal 2

Commenting on this dhtu, Siddhnta-kaumud says dantyohydi, pa-vargydir ity anye (the dhtu begins with the
dento-labial vara v. Others say it begins with the labial vara b).
2
In the Pinian Dhtu-pha this dhtu is listed as abd[a] upasargd vikre ca and Siddhnta-kaumud says that the
word ca drags in the word bhae from the previous dhtu bukk[a] bhane (10P, to bark, to speak, to sound in
general) such that abd[a] by itself is used in the sense of bhaa whereas abd[a] that comes after an upasarga is used
in the sense of vikara. However, Siddhnta-kaumud also offers an alternate explanation of the word caanupasargc
ca vikre ity eva (abd[a] is also just used in the sense of vikra, even when it doesnt come after an upasarga).
Thus the word ca is used in the sense of upasargd anupasargc ca. In this way Siddhnta-kaumud establishes that
abd[a] is also used without an upendra. Similarly, Amta explains that the form abdana in vtti 869 is made from the
cur-di-dhtu abd[a] viabdane. Viabdana is basically an equivalent of vikra since Jva Gosvm, commenting on the
cur-di-dhtu ghu[ir] viabdane, explains that viabdana means svbhimatvikaraa (revealing ones opinion). Bla,
however, explains that the form abdana in vtti 869 is made from the cur-di-dhtu abd[a] abda-kriyym where
abda-kriy means to make a sound. But the problem is that neither abd[a] viabdane nor abd[a] abda-kriyym are
listed in the Pinian Dhtu-pha or in Jva Gosvms Dhtu-pha. Thus, to make forms like abdayati he sounds
<acyuta pa. 1.1> and abdana (one who sounds) <1.1>, we either have to resort to Siddhnta-kaumuds first
explanation or we have to understand that such forms are made from the y-anta-dhtu abdi formed by applying []i
after abdam <2.1> in the sense of tat karoti (see stra 617). This y-anta-dhtu abdi, which means to make a sound
would be equivalent in sense to the cur-di-dhtu abd[a] abda-kriyym mentioned by Bla. Another feature of the

dhtu abd[a] is that it takes on the special meaning of called in karmai prayoga. For example, rdhara Svm,
commenting on brahmeti paramtmeti bhagavn iti abdyate (Bhgavatam 1.2.11), glosses abdyate as abhidhyate
(called). Similarly we get sattva viuddha vasudeva-abditam Pure consciousness is called vasudeva (Bhgavatam
