Title: Introducing Irony

Author: Adapted from: Ann Gerber & Tericia Summers

Rationale: This lesson will introduce students to the concept of Irony. This lesson can be used
prior to teaching a more complex lesson that contains irony. This will also familiarized ELL students with
the different types of irony so they will not be so confused when they encounter it.
Goal

The goal of this lesson is to introduce students to the concept of irony, and define the three
types of Irony.
Objectives

Students will be able to

identify the types of irony in the text provided by the teacher

write examples of the different types of irony
use appropriate literary terms to explain types of irony to a partner
identify the type of irony after listening to a partner read

Standards:

CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.11-12.6 Analyze a case in which grasping a point of view requires
distinguishing what is directly stated in a text from what is really meant (e.g., satire, sarcasm, irony or
understatement)
Materials and Tools:

Copies of Irony power point.

Irony situation cards

Copies of lyrics to Alanis Morisette Ironic

IPod with speakers

ELL modified chart

ELL Modifications:
1. Pair ELL student with a high-level native speaker in class, so they can explain things while I am
giving the lecture, and while students are in there groups.
2. Provide ELL students with a modified chart breaking down the three types of irony in more
detail.
3. Provide ELL students with the lyrics of Ironic which will be color coded based on the type of
irony.
4. ELL students will not be required to write a paragraph about a personal experience they have
had about irony. They will be required to write a sentence about what type of irony they
experienced, and draw a picture representing there experience. They will explain to me verbally
why they think there experience was that type of irony the following day.
Procedures:

Introduction & Presentation:(10 mins): I will have pictures of real life ironic events displayed on
the whiteboard so the students can see them as they enter the classroom. I will ask the students to think
to themselves what is happening in the pictures. After analyzing the pictures the students will raise their
hand and tell me what makes the picture funny and surprising.

Activities: (55 mins)

1. I will pass out copies of my power point presentation so the children can take notes on what
I am saying.
2. I will use my power point presentation to go over the definition of irony, explain the three
types of irony, and give examples of each type.
3. When the power point is finished, I will pass out the lyrics for the song Ironic. I will play
the song for the students, having them follow along. We will then discuss the different types
of irony in the song as a class. I will get some feedback from the students about what lyrics
they think is ironic and why.
4. At this time I will split the students into groups, and give each group 5 situation cards and
they will discuss which type of irony is depicted on each card.
5. I will allow students to use sentence stems to explain their thinking. Once the groups have
come to a conclusion on the classification of irony, they will record their answers on the
back of the situation card.

6. Each group will discuss with the class what they identified as the irony type for each
situation and the reason they chose this type.
7. I will have each student select a card and explain in writing how that card illustrates that
particular type of irony.

Reflective Assessment and Evaluation:
Students will be assessed and evaluated on their participation during group discussions, and
on their writing illustration at the end of class. They will also be evaluated on their classroom
homework based off their personal experiences.

Homework:(5 mins) Students will be required to talk with their parents and write a
paragraph about a time when they experienced irony in their own life.
