Press pause
I recognise that we have all been on different journeys,
which have affected us in different ways. Only you
know how yours has affected you. And so I encourage
you to take your time as you make your way through
this book. Feel free at any point to press pause, and
continue when you feel ready to do so. It is worth
bearing in mind that your journey to personal growth
and change will not happen overnight. So find a pace
that works for you.

Advisory warning!!!
Coach Gladys may show up during the course of this
journey. She means you no harm. Her hearts desire is to
see you move on. Dont worry: you will get notice when
she is about to show up. You then have the option to skip
over the page, whistle a tune, or do whatever you fancy.
Between you and me, I encourage you to listen to what
she has to say, give it some thought, and make your
decision afterwards. Remember, she only has your best
interests at heart.
The Journey
Why does the journey always seem long?
With windstorms that are often strong.
Time after time, Im knocked down hard
By life blows with edges of shard.
Bleeding, weeping, I plead with Thee
To take this yoke away from me.
Oh help me God!
You know my desire is to serve You Father
Yet my woes seem to draw me further.
Its not that I dont want do Your will
But doing so feels like struggling uphill.
How I wish I could fly away to rest
To later bounce back and be my best.
Oh help me God!
Now, Im dosed up with Your love and grace,
At last, I can see myself finishing the race.
Its not that all my storms have gone away,
This time around, Im determined not to sway,
Pressing on with my purpose, I choose to be fervent
To someday hear, Well done thy faithful servant.
Oh help me God!

Introduction
at your door to tell you your loved one, who only popped
out for five minutes, had been hurt (or even killed) in
a road traffic accident. Perhaps you have had to watch a
loved one, such as a child or sibling, suffer as a result of
terrible illness or addiction that is killing them slowly.
Maybe you spent your whole life savings on a business
venture, even remortgaging your house, and today, you
have lost everything. Perhaps you have experienced
the loss of a child, whether in pregnancy, at birth or in
infancy. Maybe you have been involved in one of the
horrific stories we hear on the news.
Scenarios like these are ones we often dont like to think
about and may see as the stuff that happens to other
people. Yet bad things happen to good people. I have
often been so confounded by this, to the point that it is
now on my top 10 list of questions I plan to ask God when
I grab a moment of His time in Heaven, when I get there
(dont laugh, I am serious).
As for now, I have accepted that life happens. Prior to
accepting this, though, I have to admit that I tried another
approach: coaxing God to give me advance warning of
whats ahead. I did this because in my walk with Him,
He often lets me in on His plans for my life. So why not
this aspect of my life? I reasoned. That way, I could try
to dodge any upcoming potholes. Between you and me, I
think we both know what the answer to that was; though
I have to say, there were times Father had been gracious
enough to at least shout, Take the brace position! just as
they do when an aeroplane is about to crash land.
But my search did not end there.

Part I Surviving
Getting to Grips with
the Situation
Chapter One
Bounce Back!
However, on her fourth attempt, after a scary pregnancy, as she put it, Zoe gave birth to a healthy daughter.
As you can imagine, she and Andy were overjoyed. They
loved being parents and wanted to try again for another
child. Thinking the sorrows of miscarriage were behind
them, as they had managed a full term pregnancy, they
tried again. Both the subsequent pregnancy resulted in
a missed miscarriage, meaning she had now miscarried
for the fourth time. Zoe and Andy grieved for the loss
of each child. To them, they were not just a ball of cells,
potential people or retained products of conception.
They were their precious children, and acknowledged
each of them to be so. Zoe said, Every child matters,
however far in pregnancy a person is.
Zoe later went on to have another bundle of joy, a
girl, though the journey was not without its perils. Zoe
developed a number of health problems. To mar their joy,
it was discovered that she was carrying twins, but they
lost one of those children, Isabella, who was their fifth
and final loss.
Today they have two awesome daughters they dote
on. What inspired me about Zoes story was her strength
to pick herself up and keep trying. Time after time she
miscarried, but she kept bouncing back and trying again.
She said:
Life may never be normal again when you have been
to such depths of darkness, but we can move forward,
with as little scar tissue on the soul as possible, and
saying goodbye was the key for me.

Reflective Questions
Revisit the six growth areas of posttraumatic growth.
Which one of these have you experienced, or are
currently experiencing?
Based on how you have handled and/or are handling
your challenges, how do you see yourself victim
or victor?
What do you feel you need to do to help you move
forward and grow as a result of your experiences?
