NUTRITION MONTH
Theme: First 1000 days ni baby, pahalagahan para sa kinabukasan.
MECHANICS FOR ESSAY WRITING CONTEST
1. The contest is open to all elementary pupils on the intermediate level. Each grade level must have
five (5) participants for the said contest.
2. Essays must be in English. The essay must have a minimum of three (3) paragraphs or a maximum
of five (5) paragraphs.
3. All participants must be ready 5 minutes prior to the start of the contest. Each participant is given
sixty (60) minutes to finish their essay.
4. All essays must be written in script, have a one (1) inch margin on all sides; participants must only
use black ink for the said contest and shall be written in a tablet paper.
5. To allow anonymity during judging, references to the entrants own work should be indicated only by
a number that will be given only during the contest proper.
6. The Board of Judges, composed of three (3) members will convene as a group to judge the entries
and determine the winner.

8. The winners shall be judged based on the criteria for this competition.
9. The first, second and third place winners will be awarded based on the average scores computed by
the judges. The Board of Judges decision is considered final and irrevocable. Certificates
will be given to the winners.
CRITERIA FOR JUDGING
1. Originality and Communication (40 points)
The contestants knowledge and depth of understanding about the issues being addressed by the
theme will be demonstrated by the quality of their essays.
a. Does the essay have a creative approach to a topic or story? (20 points)
b. Do vocabulary and word usage enhance the essay? (10 points)
c. Is the reader left with a finished feeling? (10 points)
2. Content (40 points)
One goal of the contest is to encourage the contestants to develop their own perspective on issues
related to the theme. This perspective should be reflected in their analysis of a complex issue and
presentation of clear, concise arguments to support their point of view.
a. Is the main idea supported in the essay? (25 points)
b. Is the essay well organized? (10 points)
c. Is the point of view consistent throughout? (5 points)
3. Writing mechanics (20 points)
The contest is designed to promote good writing as well as serious thinking. The clarity of
presentation and quality of writing will also figure the score.
a. Are spelling, capitalization, and punctuation correct? (5 points)
b. Is the sentence structure correct? (5 points)
c. Does the essay have little to no erasure at all? (5 points)
d. Is the essay
consistent in tense? (5 points)
