Make notes on the basic elements of setting in the novel on the board
through discussion.

The novel is set in the fictionalised town of Corrigan in Western

Australia.
Corrigan is a small town, most residents are working class, they are
employed predominantly by a local mine. The residents of Corrigan
are primarily white.
The climate in Corrigan is hot and dry; the novel is set over the
course of a summer, so this dry heat is particularly important.
The novel is set at the end of 1965. This is the year that Australian
troops have been sent to South Vietnam to fight alongside the
Americans against the communist Viet Cong from North Vietnam.
