MODULE 1 Learning Journal / Notes

Unit 1
When I started Unit 1, the number of organelles for a cell was quite overwhelming to
me. I have never thought of the power and the function of each cell. Scientists are
amazing to find out such details through research.

The most impressive learning in this unit is making connection between the terms
'DNA,' 'genes,' and 'chromosome.' This explains a lot on human reproduction and
how genes work.

In this unit, mutation, genetic change and cancer interest me the most. A mutation in
a normal body cell (any kind except specialized sex cells) can result in cancer.
Cancer is a term used to describe uncontrolled cell division.
I think this part of learning is the most practical. I can start to relate and understand
who people talk about cancer. Some links

Clones
All of the offspring produced by asexual reproduction are genetically identical to the
parent and to each other. In other words, the offspring are clones.
Advantages:

It saves time and energy.

Mobility is not required.
Numerous offspring can be produced at minimal cost to the parent.
Populations can grow quickly.

Offspring are genetically identical to their parent.
