andrespondingtoquestions,Iwouldlikelyconsiderittobeahomeworkorinclassassignment
andthereforenotworthasubstantialamountofpointsthatwouldhaveagreateffectona

IfmostofmystudentsscoredonthisCRIattheindependentlevel(98%100%
accuracy),ImightinferthatIreachedmygoaloftheactivityandmightevenconsidertakinga
lookatthedifficultyleveloftheassignmentandtakingitupanotch,ifIdidnotnoticemany
errorsintheassignmentresponses.(Aspreviouslystated,thiswouldlikelyserveasa
takehomehomeworkassignmentorshortinclassreflectionassignmentafterwelistenedto
somemusicinclass,soIwouldnotwantthecontenttobeextremelydifficultandwouldwant

revisitmyCRIquestions,toseeifthewordingneededtobeadjustedorcouldhavebeen
misconstrued,andwouldalsoreevaluatethecontentdifficultyincomparisontomyindividual
classsproficiencylevels.Inallthreesituations,Iwouldconsiderspeakingtotheclassasa
grouppostassignmentturnin,togathertheirfeedbackontheassignmenttoseeifitwastoo
easy,asmallchallenge,ortoodifficult.IfInoticedanoutlierscore,Imightchoosetospeak
privatelywithastudenttoseeiftheyhadanyquestionsontheassignmentIcouldhelpsupport
themwith,soastoavoidtheirfrustrationbuildingoverthecourseofsubsequentassignments.
Intermsofmotivationandengagement,Iwouldthinkthatbothindependentleveland
instructionallevelwouldindicatehighlevelsofstudentmotivationandengagementforthetext
andmyteachingstrategies,dependingonthespecificclassdynamics.(Idontthinkmotivation
andengagementlevelscanbebasedoffofthescoresof
oneassignment,thoughonehasto
becriticalandcarefulwhendrawingconclusionsormakingassumptions.)Ifstudentsscored
moreatthefrustrationlevel,Iwouldthinkthattheirmotivationandengagementmightbelesser
formychoiceoftextandteachingstrategies.IthinkoneverynecessarycomponentoftheCRI
processwouldbetoprovideopportunityforstudentandteacherfeedbackpostassignmentturn
in,sothatmotivationandengagementlevelscouldbemoreaccuratelyassessedandfutureCRI
designcouldbepositivelyimpacted.Ifmystudentsstruggledespeciallywithinthevocabulary
component,Iwouldgooverthesectionwiththemandtrytoseewhytheydidnotgraspthe
informationaswellitcouldbethatthevocabularywastooadvanced,studentshadlittleprior
topicknowledge,ortherewasamisunderstandingontheassignmentiftheirstrugglewasleft
unaddressed,thiscouldleadtofuturefailurewithcertainvocabularyandcomprehension
componentsofacontentreading.However,ifaddressedbytheteacher,vocabulary
reinforcementandsubsequentlearningcanleadtoabetterabilitytocomprehendcontenttexts
andfurtherbothsemanticandsyntacticknowledge.
Task6:Reflection
TheprocessofdesigningmyCRI,basedonthemusic(video)andlyricsIchoseseemed
quitestraightforward,sinceIwentintotheassignmentwithanideaoftheclassroomlevelI
wouldbecateringtoandthetargetgoaloftheassignment(tohaveabasicunderstandingofthe
songandvocabulary,leadingtotheabilitytoformshort,critical,autobiographicalstatements).
Therefore,developingthe10questionswaseasyforme,sinceIwasabletogobacktothetext
andtrytoputmyselfintothestudentsshoestoseewhattheymightbegathering,inferring,
questioning,etc.Ichosetoincludemultiplechoiceandshortanswerquestionsatthebeginning
oftheassignment,toensurethestudentscomprehendedthemostimportantandbasic
conceptsofthetext,includingvocabularyterms.Then,thestudentscouldtakethosemore
basicquestionsandanswersintoconsiderationwhenansweringthecriticalquestionstowards
theendoftheCRI.Asthesongincludedmuchrepetition,Imadesuretoincludeafew
vocabularytermsintheCRIthatthestudentsmayhavebeenmoreunfamiliarwith.

MypeersperformanceonmyCRIshowedmethatmyunderstandingofdesigningand
implementingtheCRIasatoolwasonanaccuratelevelforthisparticularassignment.(The
GermanspeakerresponsesIreceivedwerewithintheindependentlevel,whereasthe
nonGermanspeakerresponseswerewithintheinstructionallevel,sincetheyattemptedto
answerinGerman.)However,IknowthisisnotstaticandthatImayfailinCRIdesignand
implementationinthefuture/realclassroomsetting,ifIinaccuratelyassesstheabilitiesofa
class,makeassumptions,ordonottakestudentfeedbackintoconsideration.Thisleadsmeto
thinkthatIcouldhaveincludedanadditionalquestion(worthnopointsor0.51point)toaskthe
studentshowtheyfeltaboutthedesignandimplementationoftheCRIanditseffectivenessin
generalortheirfeelingsabouttheirpreandpostCRIcomprehension.Sincetheprocessof
curriculumdesignshouldrevolvearoundtheindividualandspecificstrengths,weaknesses,and
needsofaclassroom,Iwouldtakeresponsesandfeedbackintoconsiderationtoadjustmy
supportforanassignment/CRIand/ortoadjustthecontent/structuringofquestions/strategyin
general,sothelearnersengagingintheCRIwouldhavethebestchanceofsuccessintheir
comprehension.
