hats challenging about gardening? Just

about everything. Gardeners have issues
with soil, weather, weeds, critters both big
and small. The good news is that as local
gardeners share tips, labor, resources and the bounty, not
only are the gardens growing, the community is as well.
The Community Garden at UR Hardware is into its
first season with 40 plots set up, each five by 10 feet. Plots
are free to non-profit groups. For individuals, there is a per
plot fee of $35, but UR Hardware & General Store will give
you a $25 gift card with each paid plot, says Kim Tomlin,
store manager. We are not trying to make money off the
garden; we are trying to enforce the commitment to take
care of it. Participating are several non-profit groups,
including the Girl Scouts and MOOD, a girls group.
UR Hardware is sharing the resources of its land. Lori
Minklei, a plot owner, says, I read your article.
[Grapevine, March 2016] I was the first to buy a plot. I live
in a community in which you cant grow a garden. Its too
shady. My plants are doing well [here]. I have seven tomato plants, three eggplants, carrots, lettuce and spinach.
However, even for those who could or do have home
gardens, owning a plot connects them with a community.
I think its going to provide them with a social activity
you just cant have that in your backyard, says Tomlin.
Nicole Scull agrees: I have a plot at UR Hardware on
my own, but it really is a group. She brings her son,
Paxson, who enjoys learning about the plants. Last time
there were some kids, so he immediately joined them,
she says. Scull is growing several varieties of tomatoes,

Jena and her husband, Anthony, purchased a
six-acre property in Buena Vista Township and
put in place a plan to make Jenas dream a reality.
The property, formerly a chicken farm,
already had the basic requirements for housing
animals in place. One of the reasons we chose
this property is because it already had everything we neededbarns, pastures, outdoor electric and outdoor water lines. We had a few
minor repairs to make, but with just a little
sprucing up, we were ready to begin rescuing
animals, Jena says.
The first rescue, a spent laying hen named
Anfisa (Russian for little flower), arrived in
June 2015. Since then, 11 more chickens, six
ducks, three rabbits, two horses, two sheep and
two goats have taken up residence at Ahimsa
Acres Sanctuary.

the important role that a downtown plays in a community and why preserving and revitalizing a downtown is a
major priority. Still, there are those who
feel that the downtown receives too much
attention that should be focused elsewhere. Its worthwhile, then, to repeat
some important reasons why investment in
a downtown is so important.
The downtown is the heart and soul of
a community. When a downtown area of a
city or town deteriorates, that community
loses its core. Yes, suburbs pop up on the
outskirts. Malls, shopping centers, and big
box stores establish themselves in surrounding areas. More often than not, however, these new business centers are like
cookie-cutter copies of each other, with little if any individuality and personality. The
feeling that you are an integral, important
part of that environment is lost.
In the downtowns, you can find the
character, personality, and individuality
that make each community unique. In the
word of the National Main Street Center,
the headquarters of all the Main Street districts throughout the country:
The Main Street movement grew out of
a recognition that a community is only as
strong as its core. In an era when many
people had given up hope about the commercial and cultural viability of downtown,
and when suburbs, shopping malls, and big
box retailers were dominating the
American landscape, this seemed like an
unlikely proposition. But, the practical
frameworks outlined by the Main Street
Approach, as well as the passion of the pro-

fessionals and volunteers who make up the

Main Street network, helping pave the way
for the renaissance of healthy, vibrant
downtowns that were experiencing today.
This trend hasnt been lost on the consultants who are in charge of development.
The JGSC Group, which has helped us
work on projects and has supplied us valuable demographic data, used to supply these
services to the malls. As malls began to
dominate the scene at the expense of our
downtowns, that organization saw that a
change in direction was necessary to restore
the balance and is now working with downtowns in their redevelopment efforts.
Some statistics will serve to show the
tremendous effect that downtown revitalization has had on communities nationwide and Main Streets role in this. Since
1980 to the end of last year, the total reinvestment in physical improvements from
public and private sources amounted to
$65.6 billion; the number of building rehabilitations numbered 260,011; the net gain
in jobs numbered 556,960; and the net gain
in businesses numbered 126,476. These are
impressive figures, indeed, and show the
power of economic development and reinvestment in downtowns within the Main
Street framework. This has a ripple effect
on the economic health of entire community, not just the downtown.
We, in Main Street Vineland, are moving ahead on a variety of projects. Some of
these projects have been mentioned in previous columns, while others are in the
planning and discussion stages. All of them
will have a profound impact on our downtown and on all Vineland. So, in Vineland
and elsewhere, as the downtown goes, so
the community goes. I

Flamingo Flocking Season

Ends August 12
Flamingo Flocking Season is still in evidence locally. The Cumberland Cape
Atlantic YMCA/YMCA of Vineland adopted this unusual fundraiser to benefit the
Ys Annual Campaign. Flocking encourages participants to pay to have the iconic
plastic pink birds anonymously placed on
friends home lawns or at their businesses.
The goal is to net $5,000 with the initiative, and the total is already well over
$4,000. There have been 81 different residences and businesses flocked so far, with
a total of 740 colorful birds placed around
Cumberland County. Flock pricing ranges
from a sprinkling of pink (five flamingos
for $35) to a flourish of feathers (10 for
$60) to a full flock (20 for $100). The last
birds of the season will be released on
August 12, so anyone interested in joining
in the fun is asked to call Jackie Martine
at 856-691-0030, ext. 123.

{ 8 } the grapevine | AUGUST 10, 2016

251 S. Lincoln Ave., Vineland, NJ 08361

{ BY VINCE FARINACCIO }

n early 1891, in the midst of other

varied projects, Vineland founder
Charles K. Landis began working on
plans to establish a new town. It
had been 10 years since he had established
the resort of Sea Isle City and 30 years
since the founding of Vineland. Now, as he
entered his final decade, Landis began to
envision another opportunity to provide a
new settlement that would accommodate
a growing group of immigrants settling in
the region.
He decided to christen the town
Gardenville and was convinced that his
design and its location along the Maurice
River past the western reaches of
Vineland would make it an idyllic setting.
And, similar to the colonies already
formed in nearby Alliance, Rosenhayn and
Carmel, the site would serve as home for
many Jewish immigrants engaged in manufacturing throughout the area.
By late February, work had already
begun on the main thoroughfare, Grand
Avenue, a 100-foot-wide road, one of
many broad and beautiful avenues
envisioned by Landis for this location,
which would consist of one-acre plots and
a park.
During this period, Landis had contacted
the Jewish philanthropist Baron Maurice
de Hirsch, a successful industrialist and
banker whose organization was committed to resettling Jewish immigrants in
rural locations, including many in southern New Jersey. Many Jews had been
driven out of Eastern Europe in the latter
part of the 19th century, the result of
threatening economic conditions and antiSemitic pogroms. Many had settled in
urban centers like New York and
Philadelphia, living in tenement dwellings
and eking out a living. Relocating them to
rural areas improved their living conditions and economic opportunities and
southern New Jersey at the time offered
an ideal location.
While in discussion with the de Hirsch
group, Landis also suggested that de
Hirsch establish a horticultural school in
the nearby Jewish community of Alliance
so that fruit diseases and their possible
remedies could be studied locally. The
suggestion was undoubtedly prompted by
the recent discovery of a cure for the
black rot that had plagued Vinelands
grape crops for nearly 20 years. The

recommendation was most likely intended to stave off any future blight that
might arise.
Landis was also hoping to entice the de
Hirsch Foundation into providing funding
for Gardenville but, according to an entry
in Landis journal, a February 25 meeting
with the secretary of the group in New
York City made it apparent that the philanthropist was as yet unprepared to act
in the purchase of land. Still, Landis
reserved hope for his new community and
purchased a zinc statue of Hebe for his
colony before leaving New York. Over the
next month, the statue was placed at
Grand Avenue.
Early in March, Landis writes in his
journal that he has discovered an 18,000acre tract of land de Hirsch might be able
to use. He fails to disclose the location but
mentions presenting a plan for this tract
to one of the de Hirsch Foundations
trustees, Mayer Sulzberger, on March 5
and makes a generous offer to lay it out
for them in a letter sent to Sulzberger the
following day. Landis even took the time
to visit the family who owned it, but
there is no evidence this project ever
materialized.
Gradually, it became obvious that there
was no interest on the part of de Hirsch or
his foundation in funding Landis
Gardenville settlement, and it appears this
was made clear by the middle of March.
Landis journal becomes sporadic after the
March 6 entry, but there is one final mention of his Grand Avenue and the statue of
Hebe on March 26 when he reports that
his sister Matilda and son James visited
the completed road. Landis makes no
mention of Gardenville; instead he refers
to his unrealized project as only a new
Avenue I have opened from Landis

Despite the failure of the de Hirsch
Foundation to fund Gardenville, Landis
did not fret over the decision. In fact, he
managed to put the plan for his failed settlement to good use elsewhere. He redirected his efforts in order to aid the
founding of the new Jewish community of
Woodbine, which would be established in
Cape May County shortly after the
Gardenville project had crumbled. I

GARDENS
Continued from cover
long sweet peppers, collard greens and
pickle-size cucumbers). It teaches you so
much, she adds. I missed the initial kickoff and barbecue, but was told I could call
Harry.
Harry Behrens is the founder and president of Impact Harvest, and he has been
providing support to the community gardens. We talked for an hour on the phone
about the soil and how to fertilize, Scull
says. I told him I thought I had a problem
with my pickles. We found out it was
aphids. Theyre garden ninjas. Were washing them off.
At UR Hardware some of the labor is
shared. In addition to building the frames,
UR Hardware tilled the soil, put up fencing
to keep deer out, and makes gardening
tools available during store hours. The
ongoing workload can also be shared,
either within a group or as individuals help
each other out.
Community is also nurtured when
knowledge is shared. Tomlin is coordinating workshops; one was held on a recent
summer night at Impact Harvest in Buena
where the community gardeners gathered
for hands-on instruction on pruning tomato plants and fertilizing.

Its all about community, says Harry

Behrens, who founded Impact Harvest in
2011. We base it on Mark 12:3: Love your
neighbor as yourself. That verse is their
mission statement to use fresh-grown produce from their farms to show love to the
community. One hundred percent of our
produce is given away, Behrens says. We
are sharing best practices with community
gardens.
Last year 160 families were directly
served, receiving a bag of produce each
month. Impact Harvest also supplies produce to many area food banks. Their
growth quadrupled in four years. God has
been crazy good in a lot of waysits been
that process over and over again.
Fortune Magazine featured Behrens in
2015 as a Fortune 500 Hero for Fighting
Hunger. Comcast, where Behrens works,
partnered with him for Comcast Cares Day.
More than 160 Comcast employees volunteered. We built a big learning garden, he
says. Its an outdoor classroom, 50 feet by
40 feet. Its all vertical; its all grown above
ground. Its all designed to show different
growing methods. We grow tomatoes, lettuce, beet, eggplant, potatoes, onion. They
are in gutters. You are picking chest high.
Theres no weeding. Its controlled. It
shows people how to grow produce in
small spaces.
They have also built a tomato trellis system; the tomatoes grow in containers on
the ground, and wind up around fishing
line attached to an overhead trellis.
Behrens explains that the learning garden and workshops is the direction Impact

Harvest is taking to partner with community gardens. They currently have two farms,
the property in Buena and one in
Hammonton on Rich Weatherbys property, where they grow the watermelon.
Behrens now supports the MLK Jr. Center
Community Garden, run by Quentin
McClendon, and also UR Hardware.
I just bought a 30x100 greenhouse
and had gas added to my property,
Behrens says. With the greenhouse, he will
serve his farms, the community gardens,
and use it as a garden center growing
plants like indeterminate tomatoes. They
have lots of variety and will grow until the
plant freezes, he notes. They just need 12
hours of sunlight a day, but the plant can
produce for 12 months.
Behrens best advice to community garden leaders is about the oversight. His
organization has a network of 80 to 90 volunteers. For me and my family, its every
night. I am making a checklist; its oversight. Newer volunteers are paired with
more experienced ones. His wife, Valerie,
oversees the distribution of produce. She
does more than I do, he admits. Also helping out are sons Anthony, 15, and Tyler, 10.
Marie Sullivan-Lopez has been volunteering at Impact Harvest for four years.
We lost our home in a fire. We now live at
Fairview Manor. We use lettuce to meet
more people, she says. There is a neighbor I know and elderly people who could
use more produce.
Behrens also offers hands-on advice.
The group from UR Hardware gathered
around his demonstration table as he
showed his favorite way to grow tomatoes,
using a fabric container grow bag. Why
prune? he asks the group. To get a bigger
and healthier plant. I promise you they will
be tastier. He showed them how to identify and remove the suckers. You have to
have patience, especially at the top of the
tomato plant, he advises. You dont have
to rush. I tell my volunteers all the time, if
you dont know for sure, give it a week.
[To watch Behrens demo, view the XX
video on SNJ.]
In the fields, Behrens pointed out that to
keep out groundhogs and rabbits, its best to
plant greens in the middle, out in the open,
then plant onions and beets on the edges.
They wont go out and get them, he says.
The Master Gardeners set up a butterfly tent at Indian Avenue School in
Bridgeton as a culmination of the years
gardening events. Teacher Maria Canino
heads up the schools community garden.
They also have a pollinator garden and
have held a workshop on rain barrels. One
of the afterschool clubs painted a
Butterfly Mural, which was unveiled to
coordinate with the Butterfly Release.
Onsite was Pam Burton, the Master
Gardener coordinator, who enjoys working with schools and other groups. Our
mission is to provide scientific researchbased information on horticulture and
agriculture to the public, says Burton.
Master Gardeners are a group of trained

volunteers who have completed 20 weeks

of Rutgers courses in plant biology, pest
control and more. In turn, they commit to
volunteering in the community.
Inside the butterfly tent, Master
Gardener Patti Sheppard instructs students as they see monarchs up close.
Pollinator gardens are important because
as land has been developed, pollinators no
longer have food sources. A shortage of
pollinators hurts our gardens and crops.
Burton says simply planting milkweed in
your backyard helps.
When it came time to release the monarchs, the students were thrilled to see
them fly up just to touch down on some of
their plants; they giggled as one alighted
on Principal Carl Dolentes head for a few
minutes before fluttering off. Art teacher
Barbara Cuff tends the Pollinator Garden
and uses the peaceful spot for her students to observe and draw.
At the Cooperative Extension of
Cumberland County, Agricultural Agents
Sal Mangiafico, a water conservation specialist, and Wes Kline, whose concentration is in food, team up with the Master
Gardeners to support gardeners and
farmers. They also host a rain garden,
pollinator garden, and an Asian-influenced garden. Nearby is a research farm,
where the Master Gardeners also volunteer. One of the goals, Kline says, is to
identify plants that are resistant to issues
farmers are facing.
Burton stops to look at a present
dropped off for her; its a bug, some kind
of beetle. The homeowner is worried that
it is a killer. We dont promise answers,
says Burton, but we do promise a
response. The Master Gardeners also
run a helpline for the community.
For local gardeners, there is a network
of support encouraging the community to
get outside, labor together, and eat
healthier. I

The Cumberland County SPCA has

offered Sunday business hours for the past
several years to accord volunteers and visitors a varied assortment of hours to visit.
Unfortunately, because of a mixture of
monetary issues and staffing challenges,
they are now forced restrict their hours.
Starting the first Sunday in August, they
will no longer be open to the public. A
dedicated skeleton crew of caretakers will
be on hand to provide for the needs of the
animals, but the shelter will not be opening to the public. 1244 N Delsea Drive
They hope to revisit the issue in the
near future to determine if reopening for
Sunday hours would be viable.
