Annotation will vary depending on what you are
reading.
Some of the things we will be reading are

Annotation of Nonfiction
Nonfiction is not imaginary stuff. That means speeches,
government documents, essays, pamphlets, and articles.
Please keep in mind that it doesnt make them inherently
true or right.

Basic Annotations
Main idea (Put a circle around it)
Remember to separate the facts (Underline) from opinions (squiggly
underline)
Mark problems with a large P and the solutions with a large S
Mark causes with a large C and effects with a large E
Mark positives with a + sign and mark negatives with a - sign
Mark events that are in time order with numbers (1st, 2nd, 3rd)
Mark rhetorical appeals with a Triangle (
Details/Examples/Descriptions/Definitions/Comparisons used to
support the claim (highlight them and write what it is after)

Paraphrasing
When you paraphrase I have a few warnings and
recommendations.
If you do not know the word, do not just copy it over.
Look it up and maybe ask about the best definition.
Most students have a hard time with this because they assume that the first definition that
shows up on a search is the right one. In reality its probably the one that occurs most
often useage NOW but most of what we are reading is from between two hundred and
four hundred years ago
Sentence by sentence might seem like the best plan, but sometimes its better to look at phrases
or clauses. Alternatively, its better to look at whole paragraphs depending on the idea being
