Development of the small snowmobile

Exterior of a 1970 steel bodied B12

Armand dreamed of developing a fast, lightweight snowmobile that could carry one or two
people. In the early 1950s, Armand set aside his dream to focus on developing his company's
other tracked vehicles. But by the end of the decade, smaller, more efficient engines had been
developed and were starting to come on the market. Armand resumed his efforts to build a
"miniature" snowmobile. He worked alongside his eldest son Germain, who shared his father's
mechanical talents. Armand and Germain developed several prototypes of the lightweight
snowmobile and finally, the first Bombardier snowmobile went on sale in 1959.

Bombardier Recreational Products and Government of Canada funding
C$11.3M project to develop plug-in hybrid Can-Am Spyder roadster with
target of 50% reduction in fuel consumption
31 December 2010
The Centre de technologies avances BRP at the University de
Sherbrook (CTA) is receiving C$11.3 million (US$11.3 million) in
financial support to develop a plug-in hybrid version of BRPs
(Bombardier Recreational Products) Can-Am Spyder roadster. The
governments Automotive Partnership Canada program is contributing
$6.2 million and BRP is contributing $5.1 million over a four-year
period.

Maquette of the CanAm plug-in Hybrid

Spyder. Click to

Target features for the hybrid roadster include a 600 cc internal combustion engine and 20 kW
continuous power electric motor powered by a Li-ion battery pack that delivers similar
acceleration to the Spyder 990 RS roadster. Target range in electric mode is 30 km (20 mi), and
total range is targeted to be 600 km (375 mi).
Launched in 2007, the Can-Am Spyder roadster features a distinctive Y-architecture and is he
only mass-production, on-road vehicle that is entirely designed and manufactured in Canada.
Our goal is to develop completely new electric hybrid technology for a three-wheel vehicle that
uses 50% less fuel and reduces CO2 emissions by 50% while maintaining its speed, power and
performance.
Mihai Rasidescu, president and general manager of the CTA
The projects research team is led by Professor Alain Desrochers from the Universit de
Sherbrookes Mechanical Engineering Department and includes about 30 people from the
University and BRP. The roadsters compact size poses major challenges, they note; rather than
modifying existing hybrid technology, the researchers will design an entirely new propulsion
system.
Creating a three-wheel vehicle as opposed to a hybrid car poses significant design challenges
that require a very high degree of innovation. These challenges include the lack of space to
accommodate hybrid motorization, cooling problems, aerodynamics, vehicle weight, and noise.
Everything must be studied and modified.

29

Professor Desrochers
Over the next four years the CTA will produce three generations of prototypes and their
components. The final product must pass the test in terms of performance, reliability, durability,
and economic mass production. Any technological innovations will be potentially transferable to
other types of vehicles and products.
Bombardier: Green Train Project in Sweden Demonstrates the
Bombardier: Green Train Project in Sweden Demonstrates the Future of High Speed Trains in
Nordic Countries
Grona Taget Designed for Environmentally-friendly and Cost-efficient High Speed Travel
BERLIN, GERMANY -- (MARKET WIRE) -- 08/07/08 -- Banverket, the Swedish Railway
Administration and Bombardier Transportation, together with other partners today presented the
results of their Grona Taget ("Green Train") project at a test ride between Vasteras and
Stockholm.
The Groan Target research, development and demonstration project started in 2005 and is
scheduled to run until 2010/2011. Using a BOMBARDIER REGINA train, the rail vehicle
research program is aimed at developing a new generation of high speed trains that meet the
special technical and traffic requirements in the Nordic Countries. The Groan Target is also
unique in that it is equipped with components of the new BOMBARDIER ECO4 technologies
that maximize total train performance and energy efficient operation.
Per Kyhle, Senior Technical Strategist Banverket, commented: "The main aims of the project are
to achieve 20 to 30 per cent less energy consumption, reduce travel times and achieve fewer
operational costs. We also want to operate as fast and efficiently as possible using the present
infrastructure, which often means sharing single tracks with cargo and regional trains. The tests
have proven that these aims are realistic. We have made significant progress in enhancing the
competitiveness of rail compared to other modes of transportation."
One aspect of enhanced competitiveness is shorter travel times. The high speed concept of Groan
Taget will cut the travel time between Stockholm and Gothenburg by 15 minutes. The REGINA
test train set a new Swedish speed record of 295 km/h on July 23, 2008.

environmental and social perspective.
Bombardier has a global policy that includes both Transportation and Aerospace. The policy is
based on what characterizes Bombardier - that our social commitment shall be centered on what

Bombardier Named Transport Supplier of the Year at UK National Transport Awards
October 18, 2013 London Transportation, Press Release

Rail technology leader Bombardier Transportation has won a top industry award for Supplier of
the Year at the National Transport Awards 2013.
In an event held in London on October 17, supported by the Department for Transport and
Passenger Focus and attended by the Secretary of State for Transport, Patrick McCloughlin,
Bombardier received the award for its role in the upgrade of London Undergrounds Victoria
Line and its support of train operators during the London 2012 Olympics.
Bombardier has supplied 376 new BOMBARDIER MOVIA metro vehicles for the Victoria Line,
designed and built at its site in Derby, UK. Since the introduction of the new fleet, customer
satisfaction levels have increased and passenger waiting times have been reduced, with trains
running at intervals of less than two minutes. Reliability has also grown at an unprecedented

47

level. The Victoria Line is now the most reliable service on the London Underground network,
with trains running 80,000 km between failures, a distance equivalent to twice around the world.
The award also recognized Bombardiers role in supporting Londons train operators during the
2012 Olympic Games. With a team effort involving more than 650 Bombardier staff,
maintenance teams worked around the clock to ensure that 800 Bombardier trains on nine key
routes serving London were available to meet increased demand during the Games. London
Underground (with new Bombardier trains on the Victoria and Metropolitan lines) transported
more than 60 million passengers and Docklands Light Railway also using Bombardier vehicles
transported more than 6 million passengers. Over the Olympic period, class 378
BOMBARDIER ELECTROSTAR trains operated by London Over ground carried 6.3 million
passengers, 50 per cent more than usual. The maintenance window for the fleets reduced from a
typical eight hour window to just three hours, yet availability and reliability remained
exceptional.
The skills and expertise of Bombardier services provide efficient, competitive and sustainable
rail operations globally. They help Bombardiers customers minimize operational costs and
maximize revenue generation over their assets whole lifetime, while ensuring the highest levels
of passenger safety, dependability and comfort. BOMBARDIER ORBITA diagnostic technology
helped to proactively identify maintenance issues before they impacted service.
Francis Paonessa, President of Rolling Stock and Services for Bombardier in the UK, said:
Receiving the award of National Transport Supplier of the Year is a resounding endorsement of
the excellent partnership that we have with our customers and our spirit of working to a common
goal. We are used to meeting challenging targets to deliver high performance, reliable and safe
trains to improve services for passengers. The Olympics offered a great opportunity to show how,
through teamwork, we can raise the bar even higher.

8. What sort of CSR activities their competitors are performing?

Corporate Social Responsibility is a management concept whereby companies integrate social
and environmental concerns in their business operations and interactions with their stakeholders.
CSR is generally understood as being the way through which a company achieves a balance of
economic, environmental and social imperatives (Triple-Bottom-Line- Approach), while at the
same time addressing the expectations of shareholders and stakeholders. In this sense it is
important to draw a distinction between CSR, which can be a strategic business management
concept, and charity, sponsorships or philanthropy. Even though the latter can also make a
48

valuable contribution to poverty reduction, will directly enhance the reputation of a company and
strengthen its brand, the concept of CSR clearly goes beyond that.
Any person or entity which is a rival against another. In business, a company in the same
industry or a similar industry which offers a similar product or service. The presence of one or
more competitors can reduce the prices of goods and services as the companies attempt to gain a
larger market share. Competition also requires companies to become more efficient in order to
reduce costs

September 12, 2007 Toronto Aerospace, Press Release

Inspection of Q400 aircraft main landing gear having accumulated more than 10,000
cycles highly recommended

A second incident has occurred involving the collapse of a right main landing gear shortly after
touchdown on a Q400 aircraft operated by SAS. The first incident occurred at Aalborg, Denmark
on September 9, 2007. The second incident occurred on September 12, 2007 at Vilnius,
Lithuania. There were no reported injuries amongst the crew of four and 48 passengers on board
the second aircraft.
As a precautionary measure, Bombardier and Goodrich, the landing gear manufacturer,
recommend in an All Operator Message (AOM) that operators of Q400 aircraft having
accumulated more than 10,000 landing gear cycles (a cycle is one take-off and landing), be
grounded until an inspection of the landing gear is carried out.
Bombardier has delivered more than 160 Q400 aircraft to airlines around the world, of these
there are currently about 60 Q400 aircraft with more than 10,000 landing gear cycles.
Transport Canada (TC) has been briefed on these recent events and Bombardier is working with
TC to establish the requirement for further corrective actions, if required.
49

A Bombardier Air Safety representative has been dispatched to the second incident site to
provide assistance to the investigating authorities. Until such time as investigations are
concluded by the relevant aviation authorities, Bombardier cannot speculate or comment as to
the cause of these incidents.
