16 Neighborhoods to

Be the First to Uncover the Next Local Gem: Visit the Top 16 Trending Neighborhoods on Airbnb
in 2016
In 2015, over 40 million people traveled and stayed in homes on Airbnb in 150 countries around the
globe. Wherever they went, these travelers had a chance to have a unique, local travel experience in
communities around the world. They visited local coffee shops and small businesses that havent
benefited from tourism in the past, and they met community members they never would have
encountered if they stayed in traditional accommodations.
As 2016 begins, we took a look at the numbers and analyzed the travel to some of the lesser-known
local communities that took place over the past year. We examined not only which countries and cities
were becoming increasingly popular for travelers, but also which local neighborhoods were surging in
popularity. We looked at which neighborhoods in some of the most popular cities around the globe,
were growing particularly fast in bookings and give people a chance to not just visit a neighborhood but
feel like they live in a neighborhood.
74% of Airbnb properties are located outside of traditional downtown districts, guests who stay in these
properties are looking to become immersed in residential neighborhoods and live like a local. When
guests stay in a home on Airbnb, they have local hosts that can showcase inside knowledge about a
neighborhood and its go-to locations for the best cup of joe or local cuisine, where to take a jog, where
to find local art, artisans, and more. Many hosts share these insights in their listings and in the
Guidebooks product on Airbnb.
As we looked across these neighborhoods, some patterns emerged:
- Art: Creativity is alive across the globe and modern interpretations vary. While museums remain
popular, people are seeking neighborhoods known for street murals, like those found in
Melbournes Richmond area, or interesting mixed galleries/performance spaces/shopping
experiences like Vertigo Galleria in Roma Sur, Mexico City.
- Food: Interest in food from around the world is growing both for upscale restaurants and for
street vendors. From hawker market in Asia to food trucks in the US and street stalls in Latin
America, everyone is clamoring for fast, cheap, and local food. On the flip side, travelers still
love dining at the finest restaurants despite the hefty price tag and are flocking to Molecular
Gastronomy-inspired restaurants in Constitucin, Buenos Aires, or splurging on decadent
French food in Capucins in Bordeaux. But no matter the neighborhood, one thing most people
agree on is the need for coffee, and each Airbnb host has their own favorite cafe they
encourage guests to go to.
- Outdoor Experiences: People are travelling on foot to soak in the local culture, whether its to
leisurely stroll down a secret alleyway or escape for a long hike. From jogging through Katy Trail
in Oak Lawn in Dallas, Texas, to meandering through the alleyways of Ch-ku in Osaka, Japan,
or around the Waterfront of Calle Bettis in Traina, Seville, Spain, people are looking for the best
routes to undiscovered gems in cities.
- Shopping: While traditional malls attract visitors, more and more people are seeking out
neighborhoods where local artisans congregate and sell their unique wares, such as District VII
in Budapest, Hungary, or Poncey Highland in Atlanta, Georgia.
This report summarizes our findings for the top 16 neighborhoods to travel to in 2016, based on growth
over 2015, as well as inside tips from hosts who live in those neighborhoods.

Kisaoo, Vintage House near Khaosan Airbnb listing in Banglampoo

In Banglampoo, chatter and movement flow outward from Khaosan Road, an ever-evolving marketplace
and bar scene for travelers on the Southeast Asia circuit. Although the incandescent path is
Banglampoo's most recognizable landmark, there's more to this north Bangkok neighborhood than fish
spas and henna tattoos. Banglampoo is just as much made from what you don't immediately see
locally famous noodle shops operate from apartment buildings' bottom floors and temples are tucked
into almost-quiet side streets.

Bangkok Dunlop for Airbnb

Hosts recommend that guests visit many beautiful temples on the first day of their trip to pray and
receive the blessing for their good fortune. In the Rattanakosin area or Old Bangkok, guests may visit
Wat Phra Kaew and Grand Palace for the beautiful emerald Buddha that was carved from a single block
of jade. Local food vendors and cafs surround the old Bangkok area. Jaywalk Cafe is a tiny space filled
with locals and visitors, serving homemade food like Spaghetti Tom Yum Kung, Nutella Banana
Pancakes and amazing Thai coffee selections. Once the sun is down, the area comes alive with music.

facade cant be missed.
Indian restaurants are at every turn. While most encourage patrons to eat their hearty curries and rice
by hand, dont be afraid to ask for silverware - they will gladly provide them to you. Banana leaf rice and
Curry Puffs are popular snacks to try for a cheap bite in Brickfields. And dont forget the secret
handshake way of showing how much you enjoyed the meal - simply fold the banana leaf towards
yourself when youre done, and they will get the picture.

5. Koukaki in Athens, Greece - 800% growth

Adjacent to The Acropolis, Koukaki sits at the bottom of the Lofos Filopappou and, like all great

neighborhoods compact cobbled streets come alive with fantastic restaurants and terraces overlooking
the water.

friendly vendors in the stalls are happy to chat with browsing travelers. Another treat is to dine with
locals for lunch at the numerous tapas bars within the Mercado.

Seville Navas for Airbnb

Tired of frilly dresses but want to catch some authentic flamenco? Our hosts suggest a visit to Casa
Anselma, where the hostess, Anselma, can be a bit brusque, but her songs and the band keep the locals
clapping and dancing all night. A nighttime stroll down waterfront Calle Betis is a must-do, especially in
the summer, where it feels like one giant terrace with all tables and chairs from the bars and restaurants
lining the streets.
7. Hammerbrook in Hamburg, Germany - 400% growth
The Hammerbrook neighborhood in Hamburg is a perfect mixture of urban residential, industrial, and

along chestnut tree-lined canal banks.

Hammerbrook train station, which was made to look like a running train. On the other hand, the historic

If the drive through the jungle passage to get to Kaneohe doesnt convince you that you are in paradise,
the lush, green village should do the trick. Hawaii is no stranger to beaches and beautiful hikes, and
Kaneohe has its fair share. Early in 2015, the famed Stairway to Heaven suffered a landslide and closed
permanently; however, you can still go to Friendship Gardens, which is a trail is composed of a few
lower loops that lead up to a ridge. The views are increasingly spectacular the higher you climb.

beach-goers. Our hosts recommend you bring your own kayak, as there are no vendors on this beach.

Aside from beach bliss, Hawaiis Kaneohe is known as a local food mecca. Fat Boys has the best garlic
chicken on the island, and the Kaneohe Pancake House has excellent Loco Moco. Foodies might turn up
their noses at Zippys, but this local chain has terrific Korean Chicken and Macaroni Salad. If youre
lucky enough to be in Kaneohe on a Thursday, stop by the Kaneohe Farmers market to buy fresh
produce, macadamia nuts and, flowers from small local vendors.
9. Meireles in Fortaleza, Brazil - 280% Growth

Luxury 1BR at Beira Mar Airbnb listing in Fortaleza

If gazing out into emerald waters is of interest, look no further than the Meireles neighborhood of
Fortaleza, Brazil. The city stretches 20 kilometers down the coast, and while the beaches of Meireles are

It has a budding reputation for its restaurants and late night spots much like its southern-border
neighborhood, Varjota. Fortaleza is also known for its crop of comedians and the forr music and
dance, all gaining popularity countrywide. Virtually any day of the week you can find a party with live
music and this traditional dance, sometimes in quite modern variations (often referred to as forr

recommend guests head to Redes Santa Luzia to pick up a high-quality hammock to take back home
with them. And while they are in the neighborhood, a lunch at Gheller will fill anyone up with excellent
churrasco-style meat at excellent prices. If you're less worried about cost, turn to Boi Negro for some

History and Szimpla at Synagogue Airbnb listing in District VII

District VII, more commonly known as Erzsebetvaros, is the old Jewish quarter - home to beautiful
synagogues and architecture. It became a central figure in Budapest nightlife when people began
transforming old buildings and derelict public spaces into popular ruin bars, in the early 2000s. As
one host put it, what I like the best in the neighborhood is in whichever direction you start your walk,
within just a few minutes you reach the best cafs, street food places, shops of young Hungarian

designers, or the center of Budapest's nightlife. One great shop to pop into is Printa, part concept
shop, part gallery, and part silkscreen studio.

stalls. It has a growing arts and music scene and is home to some of the famous milonga clubs, including
host-recommended Lo De Celia and Nino Bien.
