SECTION1 PRE-INSTALLATION CABLE TEST PROCEDURE

1.0

Pre-Installation Cable Test Procedures

This test will be conducted prior to receipt of the cable from the lay-down yard. This
includes visual inspection of the cable and test using an Optical Time Domain Reflecto meter to check that the fiber optic cable exhibits no abnormal light blocking, scattering or
reflective events that have been induced during transportation.
1.1

Visual Inspection
The purpose of the Visual Inspection is to verify that the cable sustained no damage
during shipment and to verify that the number of fibers and their color coding
complies with the contractual specifications. An evaluation of the quality of cable
spooling onto the delivery drums and their visual appearance shall be conducted.
Cable Specifications shall be verified against the Manufacturers Cable Test Report
supplied with each reel of cable.

1.2

Procedure:
All cables shall be inspected to verify fiber counts, fiber coding, spooling and visual
appearance. Cable marking shall be checked against the Manufacturers Cable Test
Report.

1.3

Acceptance Criteria:
Fiber count and coding shall be as specified on the Manufacturer supplied Cable Test
Report. The cables shall be coiled onto the delivery drum in even layers, allowing
final packaging to prevent the cables from uncoiling and the layers on the drum
tangling during transport. Visual inspection shall confirm that there is no physical
damage to the cable drum and cable.

Pre-Installation Cable Reel Test

This purpose of the OTDR test is to verify that the cable sustained no damage during
shipment.
2.1

Test Equipment:
Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (OTDR)
Elastomeric Splice or Bare Fiber Adapter

2.2

Test Procedure:

2.3

All fibers on the cable reel are to be tested bi-directionally and averaged at
1550/1310 nm by means of an OTDR.
Remove a sufficient portion of the cable sheath and clean it for testing.
Strip and cleave the fiber.
Connect pigtail to the OTDR.
Connect the bare fiber to the pigtail with an Elastomeric Splice or bare
fiber adapter.
Run the OTDR test to check for abnormalities and to measure the cable
length, total loss and average loss per kilometer.
OTDR data will be recorded on a CD for evaluation and printout using a PC
with the OTDR manufacturers software.
Repeat the above steps for each fiber.
The cable will be kept ready for installation if there is no discrepancy during
the reel test.
The cable will be re-sealed after the completion of the test

Acceptance Criteria:
Max 0.25 db/km at 1550 nm and 0.40 db/km at 1310 nm for all fibers.
No peak discontinuities above .1 db at 1550 nm & 1310 nm.

2. 4

The OTDR length of cable is compared with the marked reel length.

SECTION 2 COPPER CABLE PROCEDURE

1. Thoroughly examine the cable drum for any damage during transportation and handling.
2. Cut and remove the portion of cable end if it is nailed to the drum before preparing the cable for
testing.

3. Remove the outer jacket and shield from both ends of cable for a sufficient length to clear/separate
binders and pairs.
4. Separate all pair ends and remove insulation from both ends of each pair to twist the pair for loop
resistance measurement.
5. Twist each pairs separately on one end of the cable and keep the pairs away from shorting each
other.
6. Switch ON the multimeter and set it in resistance measurement position.
7. Hold the test leads on one pair and record the loop resistance in the test acceptance form.
8. Holding the test leads on the same pair cut the shorted end and check the multimeter to make sure
the pair is not shorted inside cable. Repeat this for all pairs.
9. Twist all tip wires together and ring wires together in every binder and test it with multimeter for
any shorting between pairs in any bundle.
10. Hold one test lead to the shield of the cable and touch the other test lead to every bundle to check
for any grounded pairs.
11. Cut and clear the ends of cable after completing the test, replace the end caps and secure the cable
on the reel.
Tools required- One calibrated standard multimeter, splicer's hand tools, jelly cleaning kit,
insulation tape and heat shrink end caps if required.
