Dear Mr Cottrell,
I recently got an email from the Careers and Employability Centre, University of Surrey regarding a
summer placement opportunity with Alexander Dennis Ltd. I am very interested in applying for the
placement to analyse operational range of the vehicles manufactured.
I am a final year MEng Mechanical Engineering student. Since the start of my undergraduate years, I
have always interested in the automotive and manufacturing industry. As I reached my third year, I
have focussed my interest into operational testing. I really enjoyed testing different sets of possible
solutions and analyse the data when I was doing my third year Group Design Project module. I led a
team to test electric bicycles available in the current market in which we have looked into the range,
maximum speed and torque and energy usage. The placement opportunity has highly interest me
because of the job scope provided in the brief. As more issues had been raised about the tests
conducted by large companies especially in automotive industry, I am very keen to be part of the team
to analyse different group of vehicles to get real-world performance of the vehicles manufactured.
I have taken Mechanics of Vehicles and Machine and Modern Vehicle Systems Design in my second
and third year respectively to really understand how vehicles work. I have mastered the working of a
compression-ignition engine, spark-ignition engine and hybrid vehicles. I also took Fluid Mechanics &
Thermodynamics in which I have learned about heat cycles and engine cycles. Doing Group Design
Project in my second and third year, I have been assigned to handle data in excel files in which I
enjoyed very much and have improved my skills in Microsoft Office packages. I am also proficient in
Solid Edge (CAD) and have intermediate skills in MATLAB.
I am very friendly and can adapt to my environment relatively quick. I am also very organized. I am
particular in having things where it should be. This is great when handling with large amount of data,
in which I have multiple experience doing it. Punctuality has always been my best attribute. I will make
sure my work is done before the dateline, without neglecting the quality of my work.
