Linear Figure Gesture Drawing

Grade: Fifth
Project Length of Time: 4 Art Sessions
NYS Standards:
1. Students will make works of art that explore different kinds of subject matter,
topics, themes, and metaphors. Students will understand and use sensory
elements, organizational principles, and expressive images to communicate their
own ideas in works of art. Students will use a variety of art materials, processes,
mediums, and techniques, and use appropriate technologies for creating and
exhibiting visual art works.
Students:
a. experiment and create art works, in a variety of mediums
(drawing, painting, sculpture, ceramics, printmaking, video, and computer
graphics), based on a range of individual and collective experiences.
b. develop their own ideas and images through the exploration and creation
of art works based on themes, symbols and events.
c. understand and use the elements and principles of art (line, color, texture,
shape) in order to communicate their ideas.
d. reveal through their own art work understanding of how art mediums and
techniques influence their creative decisions.
e. Identify and use, in individual and group experiences, some of the roles and
means for designing, producing and exhibiting art works.
2. Students will know and use a variety of visual arts materials, techniques, and
processes. Students will know about resources and opportunities for
participation in visual arts in the community (exhibitions, libraries, museums,
galleries) and use appropriate materials (art reproductions, slides, print
materials, electronic media). Students will be aware of vocational options
available in the visual arts.
Students:
a. understand the characteristics of various mediums (2dimensional,
3dimensional, electronic images) in order to select those that are appropriate for
their purposes and intent.
b. develop skills with electronic media as a means of expressing visual ideas.

3. Students will reflect on, interpret and evaluate works of art, using the language
of art criticism. Students will analyze the visual characteristics of the natural and
built environment and explain the social, cultural, psychological, and

environment dimensions of the visual arts. Students will compare the ways in
which a variety of ideas, themes, and concepts are expressed through the visual
arts with the ways they are expressed in other disciplines.
Students:
a. explain their reflections about the meanings, purposes, and sources of works of
art; describe their responses to the works and the reasons for those responses.
b. explain the visual and other sensory qualities (surfaces, colors, textures, shape,
sizes, volumes) found in a wide variety of artworks.
c. explain the themes that are found in works of visual art and how the artworks are
related to other forms of art. (dance, music, theatre, etc.)

Learning Objectives:
Students will be able to:
Understand (2) different techniques in creating a Line Figure Gesture Drawing.
Understand the concept of Gesture.
Show mastery at drawing a Silhouette Loopy Figure.
Show mastery at drawing a Stick Figure Figure.
Draw Figures within a grid, alternating between (2) types of drawing techniques.
Recognize Figurative Gestures in Art.
Distinguish between different techniques of representing the Figure in Art.
Compare the effects of using different mediums to create a Figurative Drawing.

Part I:
MotivationDemonstration:
I will illicit from the class:

How many of you are timid in drawing a Figure?


Would it be helpful to be able to draw a Figure if you wanted to?
I will show examples of famous Figurative Artists work, i.e. Edgar Degas, Giocometti,
Keith Karing.

I will ask students to gather around the wood demonstration table.


I will show students the 11 X 17 predrawn grid paper.

In the first box grid on the paper, I will show, using pencil, how to draw a Loopy
person by starting a continuous line with pencil from one point and looping it all
around in the form of a figure until it joins back up to its starting point.
I will show how students should try to fill the box grid well.
In the next box grid, I will show how to draw a Stick Figure.
I will show how you can add detail to the Figures.
I will show how to repeat these techniques to create a Figurative Pattern.
I will show how to go over the pencil lines with a Black Sharpie.
I will show how to give each grid box a tempera cake wash of color.
Materials:
11 X 17 Grid Paper
Pencils
Black Sharpie Markers
Tempera Cakes
Water & Brushes
Prezi Software
Chromebooks
Printed out images of Figurative works by Degas, Alberto Giocometti and Keith Haring
Activity I:
Volunteer passes out gridded paper to each student.
In the first box grid on the paper, students will draw a Loopy person by starting a
continuous line with pencil from one point and looping it all around in the form of a
figure until it joins back up to its starting point.
Students will try to fill the box grid well with their Loopy Figure.
In the next box grid,Students will draw a Stick Figure.
Students will add detail to the Figures.
Students will show how to repeat these techniques to create a Figurative Pattern.
Students will go over their pencil lines with a Black Sharpie.
Students will show how to give each grid box a tempera cake wash of color.
Part II:
Demonstration:
Demonstration of how to use Prezi.
I will show them how to insert pictures from Google Images.
I will show them how to create slides.
I will show them how to arrange their slides.
Activity:
In pairs, the Fifth Graders will plan out a short Prezi Presentation.

The Prezi should show different Figurative Artists work.


The Prezi should show the (2) different Figurative Line Drawing techniques.
The Prezi should show each students Grid Figurative Drawings.
Assessment:
The class will view each groups Prezi Presentations. After each Presentation,
The class can comment on the effectiveness of the presentations.
