Introduction

ThisSpecialInstructionprovidesinstallationinstructionsforconvertinga3500generatorsetfroma480V

sensingVR3regulatortoa240VsensingVR6Bregulator.ThisSpecialInstructionalsoprovides

informationconcerningtheinstallationinstructionsfortherelatedcomponentsthatarerequiredforproper

operationoftheVR6Bregulator.TheVR6Bsystemisdesignedforusedonthe3500generatorset.A

VR6Bregulatorisincludedinthe242­9702VoltageRegulatorGpgroupandisalsoincludedinthe242­

9703VoltageRegulatorGpgroup.

Note:TheVR6Bregulatorisdesignedforonly240Vsensing.

The242­9702VoltageRegulatorGpisthereplacementforthe149­6131Regulatorthatisuseforself­

excitedgenerators.The242­9703VoltageRegulatorGpisthereplacementforthe155­3819Voltage

RegulatorAsthatisuseforpermanentmagnetgenerators.

Forcorrectoperationandmaintenanceinformationofaparticularproduct,theservicetechnicianshould

havetheappropriateOperationandMaintenanceManual(OMM)fortheequipmentthatistobeserviced.

Whenservicingorrepairingelectricpowergenerationequipment,dothefollowing:

Makesurethattheunitis"off­line",thatis,disconnectedfromtheutilityand/orothergeneratorsthat

couldprovidepowerservice.Theunitshouldbelockedoutifpossibleortagged"DONOT

OPERATE".

Makesurethatthegeneratorengineisstopped.

VerifythattheGeneratorsetStartKeyisintheOFFposition.Temporarilyremovethekeytoprevent

inadvertentstartofthemachine.

Makesurethatallbatteriesaredisconnected.

VerifythegeneratormaincircuitbreakerisintheOPENposition.Verifythegeneratormaincircuit

breakerislockedout.

Makesurethatallcapacitorsaredischarged.

Lockoutallswitchgearandautomatictransferswitchesthatareassociatedwiththegenerator.

Makesureresidualvoltageintherotor,stator,andthegeneratorisdischarged.

1. Removethegeneratorleftsideaccesspanelcover.

2. Installthe243­3204PotentialTransformerGpinthelowergeneratortraywhichislocatedbelowthe

voltageregulator.Usematerialssuppliedwiththe243­3204PotentialTransformerGptosecurethe

243­3128Transformertolowergeneratortray.

Note:Drilledandtappedholesareprovidedfortheshockmounts.

DisconnectthewiringtotheVR3voltageregulatorattheregulatorandatthegenerator.

4.

DisconnecttheVR3voltageregulatorfromthemountingbracket.

5.

InstalltheVR6Bvoltageregulator,suppliedwith242­9702VoltageRegulatorGp,inplaceofthe

VR3.Useexistingmountinghardware.

Note:RefertoSpecificationsSystemOperationTroubleshooting,TestingandAdjusting,RENR2480

toverifyallVR6Bjumperconnectionsthatareneededtomeetcustomerrequirements.

ForwiringtheVR6Bsystemforself­excitedgenerators,refertoIllustration1.AsIllustration1

shows,connectthevoltageregulatorsensingleadsfromterminals20,22,and24ofthetransformer

assemblytoeithertheoptionalRadioFrequencyInterference(RFI)filterortoterminals20,22,and

24oftheVR6Bregulator.MakeallotherwiringconnectionsasshowninIllustration1.

7.

VerifyallterminalpointconnectionsonboththetransformerassemblyandtheVR6Bvoltage

regulatoraresecured.

8.

Verifythatfinishedwiringisnotplacedoversharpcornersandisnotstretchedtightly.

9.

Securewiringtoestablishedwiringbundleswithwireties.

10.

Installgeneratorleftsideaccesspanelcover.

11.

Energizethesystemandperformnormalstartingsequence.

12.

Verifygeneratorvoltageandoperation.Ifnecessary,refertotheSpecificationsSystemsOperation

TroubleshootingTestingandAdjusting,RENR2480manualfortroubleshootingand/oradditional

information.

2. Installthe243­3205PotentialTransformerGpinthelowergeneratortraywhichislocatedbelowthe

voltageregulator.Usematerialssuppliedwiththe243­3205PotentialTransformerGptosecurethe

243­3129Transformertolowergeneratortray.

Note:Drilledandtappedholesareprovidedfortheshockmounts.

3. DisconnectthewiringtotheVR3voltageregulatorattheregulatorandatthegenerator.

4. DisconnecttheVR3voltageregulatorfromthemountingbracket.

5. InstalltheVR6Bvoltageregulator,suppliedwith242­9703VoltageRegulatorGp,inplaceofthe

VR3.Useexistingmountinghardware.

Note:RefertoSpecificationsSystemOperationTroubleshooting,TestingandAdjusting,RENR2480

toverifyallVR6Bjumperconnectionsthatareneededtomeetcustomerrequirements.

6. ForwiringtheVR6Bsystemforpermanentmagnetgenerators,refertoIllustration2.AsIllustration

2shows,connectthevoltageregulatorsensingleadsfromterminals20,22,and24ofthetransformer

assembly,toeithertheoptionalRadioFrequencyInterference(RFI)filterortoterminals20,22,and
