Mooresville Graded School District

A Note from the

Mooresville Graded
School District
Hello MGSD community!
We are so excited to welcome back all of our
students for the 2016 - 2017 school year and
feel confident it is going to be a great year in
Mooresville Graded School District!
We want to make sure everyone in our
community knows that we appreciate your
constant support as we work diligently to
make sure every child, every day is receiving
a top-notch education. We are truly blessed
to have great teachers, staff, parents, and
students in Mooresville and it is reflected in
the culture of family within our district.
We hosted our seventh annual Summer
Connection this July. Teachers and
administrators from across the nation came
to MGSD and witnessed first-hand why we
are recognized on a national level. They
all came to learn about technology but left
talking about the culture and love we have for
children. Public education continues to face
challenges from multiple fronts; however, our
teachers and staff never falter in doing right
for all of our children -- they continue to work
hard and be positive every day.

As most of you know, Dr. Edwards retired

from public education after spending nine
years in Mooresville. The district is in a great
place, and we look forward to welcoming a
new superintendent in the near future. We
can promise you that our team is committed
to continuing the vision of being a studentcentered district that understands every
single child matters and has a right to a
solid public education that is delivered with
respect and caring.
We look forward to working with all of the
community in 2016 - 2017, and hope you will
join us once again as we embark on another
journey through another great year!
Warm regards,
The MGSD Executive Team
Todd Black, Terry Haas, Crystal Hill, Tanae
McLean, Ingrid Medlock, Stephen Mauney,
and Scott Smith

Change A Life Mentoring Program

Local School District Promotes Mentoring Program

Mooresville Graded School District

(MGSD) has embarked on a challenging
yet rewarding endeavor to expand
the mentoring assistance provided
to students through the K-12
school district.
Finishing its fifth year, MGSD Change
A Life Mentoring Program currently
maintains 142 mentors. The program
is supported by members of the
community as well as many staff
members who are exemplary role
models and exhibit positive attitudes
and outlooks.
Dr. Mark Edwards, Superintendent of
Mooresville Graded School District
launched the Change A Life
Mentoring Program in the 2009/2010
school year. Enormous progress
has been made with the program.
We received tremendous support,
however we want to increase our
reach and influence our district.
We need additional volunteers to
participate in this worthwhile cause
to help Change A Life.
Mentoring serves as a powerful human
force for our children. It can change
the vision, health and the economic
base of a community. Research has
shown that programs that rely on
volunteer mentors can play a powerful
role and greatly enhance a young
persons prospects for leading a
healthy and productive life.

Mentors can influence mentees

decision-making skills, support the
dreams and encourage them to
succeed in school. The impact of a
mentor is boundless and serves as
a low-cost, low tech strategy to help
youth in challenging situations.
January, 2016 marked the 15th
anniversary of National Mentoring
month. Each year since its
launch in 2002, National Mentoring
Month has enjoyed the strong support
of President Barack Obama and
the United States Congress. Other
prominent individuals who have
participated in the campaign include:
Maya Angelou, former President
George W. Bush, former President Bill
Clinton, Clint Eastwood, Senator John
McCain, Quincy Jones, General Colin L.
Powell, Cal Ripken, Jr., Bill Russell, and
Usher. For more information on
National Mentoring Month,
please visit:
www.NationalMentoringMonth.org.
The mission of the Mooresville
Graded School District is to encourage
and support students to become
successful academically,
personally and socially.
Change A Life, become a mentor, call
us at: 704-658-2530 for information,

A Note From Brady Johnson

Welcome back students and families of Iredell-Statesville Schools. Our

public schools educate all children, contribute to a qualified work force and
help create inquisitive and knowledgeable citizens. Our District continues to
evolve with the pace of our world today and will always strive to provide all
of our parents and children with educational options, a learning environment
that is welcoming and safe, transportation that can be counted on, and
highly qualified staff whose focus is your child.
We want your child to enjoy their school life and create memories that
they will look back on all of their life. I want parents to know that the
employees of this District are sensitive to the many options before you and
we appreciate and take seriously the opportunity to educate your child.
The stronger the partnership between parents and schools, the greater the
success we have forming the citizens we all want our children to be.
I am honored to serve the families of Iredell-Statesville Schools.

Afternoons upon school release until 6pm

Morning programs, if available at your school, begin at 6am. Please check with your

A written Daily/Weekly schedule for each group of students routines and blocks of
time assigned for activities will be posted and followed. Those activities will include:
A balance between self-directed and adult-guided activities.

Safety is our primary concern. Parents,

please use your best judgment. Always err
on the side of safety. Remember to notify
your school if you cannot attend for any
reason.

Connect-ED messages for delays and

closings will be sent between 5:00 and
5:45 a.m. Info will also be posted on the

by 6:00 am.
The most reliable place to check on closings
is our web site: http://www.iss.k12.nc.us

including Facebook and Twitter. Other
sources are WBTV-3. WSOC-9, NBC-6,

of keeping their children at home if they feel
their safety is at risk.
If schools are closed for the day, Prime
Time is closed also. If schools open on a
delayed schedule, Prime Time will operate
as usual.
Frequently Asked Questions
About Snow Closings
1. How is the decision made to
close school?
Student safety is the #1 priority whenever
weather conditions affect school operations.
A team of school employees drive roads
and bridges throughout Iredell County to
determine their safety for our school buses.
(Approximately 6 out of 10 students ride the
bus every day.)
Those employees regularly report in to
the associate superintendent, who is
also in contact with NC Department of
Transportation, the Highway Patrol and the
weather service. A decision is made no later
than 5 a.m. that school will close that day.
If secondary and back roads are still icy at
sunset and temperatures are forecast to
remain below freezing, the decision to delay
or close will be announced that night.
In unpredictable weather, the school system
will always err on the side of safety.
2. What is my most reliable source for
learning about school closings?
We will notify all staff and students via
Connect-ED telephone and email
messaging first.

While we contact all area TV stations and

a large number of radio stations regarding
school closings, we have found some media
outlets more reliable and accurate than
others in broadcasting school closing news.
For the fastest and most accurate
information, we encourage you to monitor
our website: http://www.iss.k12.nc.us.
School closings are posted on our website
and Facebook page immediately as the
decisions are made. If you are visiting
the website frequently, be sure to hit the
refresh or reload button on your
browser to make sure you are viewing
the latest page.
3. The streets are fine where I live.
Why arent we in school today?
Iredell is a large county covering an area
of almost 40 miles from Lake Norman to
the Brushy Mountains above Harmony.
The weather and temperatures can be
very different from one end of the county
to another. Even so, the Iredell-Statesville
Schools functions as a system with many
operations interconnected. After carefully
studying the issue of closing only parts of
the system in unsafe weather, the Board of
Education rejected the proposal as not only
operationally inefficient, but divisive and
counter to system goals of equity.
4. My school is open, but my road is
dangerous. What do I do?
Parents always have the option of keeping
their children at home if conditions are
dangerous where you are. Safety is our
top priority. Make-up for absences will be
arranged by your teacher and principal.
