EXPERIMENT

Analysis of Group II A: Take the ppt. in a beaker, add half a test tube of 1:3 HNO 3, heat gently, filter.

Residue: Black (Hg5) Filtrate: Make alkaline with NH4OH, Filter.

Analysis of IIB:-Transfer the ppt. in a beater, add few ml of conc. HCL, boil for
some time and filter.

confirmed.

1) Make alkaline with NH4OH add 2gm


oxalic acid boil and pass H2S gasorange ppt.- Sb+3 confirmed.
2) 2nd part + NH4OH add a clean
iron/zinc wire and allow reaction to
continue for one minute. Filter into a
test tube containing Hgcl2soln- white
ppt.- confirm Sn+2

Analysis of Group IIIA: -Transfer the ppt. in a beaker add mixture of 5 ml of


NaOH and 5ml of H2O2 Boil gently and filter.

Residue: Divide into two parts:

Filtrate:

Part 1: Dissolve in dil. HCL & divide


into two parts-

Case 1: Colourless Cr+3 is absent. Add


NH2Cl & boil-white ppt. Al+3
confirmed.
Case 2: Yellow in colour-Cr+3 is present
Acidify with CH3COOH and add lead
acetate soln- yellow ppt.- Cr+3
confirmed.

1) Add K4[Fl(CN)6] solna deep blue


ppt.- Fe+3
2) Add NH4SCN or KSCN soln blood red
colour- Mn+2
Part II: Dissolve in 1:1 HnO3 Add two
drops of H2O2-boil, cool well-add a
pinch of Na-bismathate-a pink colourMn+2

Analysis of Group IIIB:


Dissolve the ppt. in 1:10 HCL, warm and filter.

Residue: Black (cosorNiS)

Filtrate: Boil to remove H2S Add excess of

2) 2nd part + (NH4)2SO4soln- warm- white ppt.-confirmed Sr+2
3) 3rd part + ammonium oxalate soln- white colour ppt. confirms Ca+2

Analysis of Group V: The ppt. is dissolved in dil. HCL. Then it is divided into
two parts1) 1st part- 2 drops of Magnusson reagent followed by several drops of NaOH sol n
until alkaline a blue ppt. confirmed Mg+2
2) 2nd part + NaOH soln- with ppt. Mg+2

Special tests for Na+, K+, NH4+:


1) Salt soln + zinc uranyl acetate soln- a yellow crystalline ppt. confirmed Nat.
2) Salt soln + Nesseleras reagent-brown ppt. NH 4+
3) Soln + Na- cobaltinitrite soln- a yellow ppt.- K+
4) Salt soln + Tartaric acid white ppt.- K +
