DESCRIBE YOUR UNIT

This unit aims to provide students with the opportunity to explore the relationships between
the Earth, the sun and the moon. This unit takes an inquiry-based approach to teaching and
learning through the implementation of the 5Es (Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate and
Evaluate) instructional model. Students acquire authentic and meaningful shared learning
experiences that enable them to develop an understanding of the science concepts involved,
and use a range of science processes and skills.
By

the end of the unit, students will be able to:

describe the shapes and sizes of the Earth, the sun and the moon relative to each other
describe how the Earth, the sun and moon are positioned in the solar system
explain the movements of the Earth, the sun and the moon
explain day and night in terms of the Earth spinning on its axis.

To achieve this, students will work both individually and in groups to:
investigate the differences between night and day from their own experiences and by
looking at paintings
explore the shapes and sizes of the Earth, the sun and the moon using everyday materials
investigate the positions of the Earth, the sun and the moon in the solar system using
everyday materials
investigate the apparent movement of the sun from east to west through role play and by
creating scale models
investigate the movements of the Earth and the moon around the sun through role play
and by creating scale models
explore how the movement of the Earth, the sun and the moon result in night and day
